She rolled her eyes at the Specter. “I need to get clean first!” she exclaimed.
Voxel settled down, resting his head on his front paws as he waited for her to be finished. Fanged grabbed some of the wash cloths that Rusty had been lying on earlier. They might prove to be useful in their quest for good hygiene. She felt a rush of excitement as she approached the sink. There was nothing better than soaking in a hot bath. She didn’t have that luxury now, but this was good enough for her for the moment.
“Get excited, Rusty!” she told him.
The Lazaru let out an enthusiastic meep. She didn’t know how much he would like water, but if she showed enough excitement over it, maybe he would feel more comfortable with it. She turned the tap on, grimacing when frigid water met her hand. It was not ideal, but in a pinch, she couldn’t exactly afford to complain. She already knew there was no way to heat the water. There wasn’t a hot water tank anywhere close to here. She grabbed a cloth and soaked it. Then she rung out the excess water and began to wipe her face clean of grime.

Instantly, she felt better. She soaked the cloth again and washed her face again, trying to get it as clean as possible. When she pulled the cloth away, she shuddered at the state it was in. When she was finished with her face, she stripped down to her underwear and began to wash the rest of her body. She hesitated as she reached her top set of ears. She didn’t like touching them, but she needed them clean all the same. After she had finished, she took one look at her clothes and grimaced. Did she really want to put them back on? Deciding against it, she dumped her clothing in the sink. It would take a while to dry and she would be cold in the meantime, but she couldn’t put it back on at this point.
“I might catch hypothermia, but at least I’ll be clean,” she told herself. “Alright Rusty, it’ll be your turn next.”
The Lazaru meeped again, his tail flicking back and forth. Voxel trotted over, his attention switching to her over the electrical machine. He regarded her with curiosity, not quite understanding how she had managed to remove her fur. Humanoids were certainly strange!

She stuffed cloths into the drain to stop the water from escaping. She then turned the tap on full blast and filled the basin up enough to fully immerse her clothes. Once it was ready, she dumped in her shirt, taking the time to caress the grime and dirt away. It would have been more effective with soap, but she hadn’t found any in the mansion. When her shirt was as clean as it was going to get, she hung it up to dry. She repeated the action with each article of clothing. After she finished, she removed the cloths she had used to block the drain and allowed the water to drain.
“Now it’s time for you to get clean!” she told Rusty.
Voxel looked at the sink with intrigue. He would never truly understand the concept of bathing, but it seemed to make Fanged happy. She lifted Rusty into the sink, making sure to angle him away from the tap. The water was far too cold to immerge him in. She wet one of the cloths she had yet to use and began to wipe him down. The grime cleared away with a little bit of scrubbing and she eventually got him clean.

Rusty had a healthy shine to his coat now that it had been cleaned of any grime. Fanged wished her clothes were that simple to clean, but she knew they would have stains that simply wouldn’t be removed. Even if she managed to get a hold of some detergent.
“I suppose we ought to wait for my clothes to dry now,” she told her pets.
She didn’t exactly want to be running around in her undergarments. It wasn’t very practical and she didn’t want to stray too far away from her clothes. She stepped over to the electrical chair, grateful that it wasn’t connected to anything and took a seat.
Voxel and Rusty settled in beside her. Rusty was quick to fall asleep, but Voxel remained alert, his focus once again shifting towards the electrical machine. Fanged took the chance to close her eyes. She trusted the Specter to alert her if anything was amiss. She fell asleep, though it was more of a doze than any significant amount of rest. When she awoke, a substantial amount of time had passed. Perhaps this meant her clothes were dry. She walked over to check them. They were still a bit damp, but wearable.

She dressed herself, feeling cleaner than she had ever felt before. Rusty awoke as well, shaking his fur out and meeping happily.
“At least you’re feeling better too,” she commented. “Alright Voxel, now we can investigate that machine you’re so interested in.”
She stepped over to it, noting that the power cord she had found earlier could be fit into it. The power cord was long enough to reach the electrical chair. The prospect unnerved her, but she was in a clearer headspace to deal with it now that she’d had a nap. Voxel howled in excitement as she moved to plug in the cord. She then walked it over to the other machine and plugged it in there as well.
“Alright, if I die, I blame you,” she told the Specter.
The Specter brushed up against her. Despite there being no true contact, Fanged felt the affection flowing from his body. She rubbed her palms together, attempting to warm them up. Without prompting, Voxel stood on the platform, prompting the electrical machine to turn on. Electricity began to pour out from the machine and into the power cord. In turn, this lit up the chair that was connected to the electricity and the monitors surrounding it.

She shuddered as she approached the chair. Her instincts were screaming at her not to sit in it, but the intention was clear. The device needed some sort of biological presence and she wasn’t about to set Rusty down on it. In fact, she made sure the Lazaru stayed far away from her when she sat in the chair. She glanced over at Voxel. He seemed unharmed, but she couldn’t help but worry about him. Steeling herself, she plopped herself down in the chair. She nearly jumped out of her seat when the monitors changed. She wasn’t exactly sure how the machine worked, but it appeared to be showing a scan on her body.
“I better not be getting radiation poisoning,” she muttered.
The scan appeared to be measuring the thermal temperature of her body. From what Fanged could tell, she was still a bit cold from cleaning herself in cold water. She didn’t know exactly what she was meant to be looking for, but after a few minutes her temperature began to warm up. When it did, the monitor revealed a few symbols.
“Those look like the ones I copied down earlier,” she observed.
Rusty watched the monitor with curiosity, though he definitely couldn’t understand it.

Fanged memorized the symbols that popped up. When it became evident that nothing further would happen, she stood from the chair. Voxel stepped off of the platform. She took that to be a good sign that she had accomplished something. Rusty followed the two of them as Fanged headed over to where she had stashed the clipboard with paper. She quickly used the gel pens to copy out the symbols before she could forget them.
“Now I wonder what on earth they could be used for,” she contemplated.
The rest of the room appeared to be rather void of anything else. It looked as if she’d done everything possible in this room. She could only head to the next. She still had the keys in her pocket and presumably, they would unlock something in another room. She made sure that both Voxel and Rusty were following her as she opened the door to the next room. She found herself suddenly having to squint. Rusty and Voxel both seemed more comfortable in the dark than she was. She would need to rely on them to scout for danger. Her ears might be adequate to alert her to dangers, but they couldn’t hear a silent foe.

Now that she and Rusty were clean and they had drunk their thirst away, the next item on the agenda list was to find some food. Eating food found in the mansion was a calculated risk. On the one hand, it might be infected with some sort of strange magic. On the other hand, Fanged couldn’t remember the last time they had eaten and needed food quite urgently. She hoped the new room was a kitchen or a dining room fully stocked with food, but she couldn’t see anything. Rusty and Voxel both seemed quite settled, so at least there didn’t appear to be danger present.
“I just need to find the darned light,” she muttered.
Fanged placed one hand on the wall, searching for a light switch to press. Rusty pressed against her legs, as though trying to lead her around. She doubted they would want to investigate the same things, however. Fanged wanted to find food, Rusty usually wanted to find something to play with. She scanned the area, trying to see if she could make out Voxel in the darkness. She couldn’t see him, but a bark of laughter indicated that he was unharmed. The darkness made things difficult for her.

Voxel seemed to have discovered something that he considered to be of importance. Fanged followed the sound of his voice, Rusty close at her heels. She reached Voxel with little difficult. She couldn’t exactly see what had him so excited, however. She squinted, waiting for her eyes to adjust to the dark. Her vision improved slightly, but it still wasn’t enough to make out much of her surroundings.
“I won’t be of much help, so you too are going to need to be my eyes,” she told them.
Voxel appeared to agree with her. His ability to lead her around would be limited to sound only. Rusty could lead her through touch, but he had little idea of where to go. She reached her hands out in front of her, trying to find the object that had Voxel so thrilled. From touch, she could feel that there was a lamp in front of her. She went to switch it on only to discover that there was no bulb in place.
“I suppose I’ll need to find one first.”
She felt a wave of frustration hit her. She used to be able to see relatively decently in the dark. Now it was like she was fully night blind.

She stumbled around the room, trying her best to follow Rusty as he walked around. She placed one hand on his body, allowing him to navigate for her. She was led over towards a series of countertops. She discovered this by bumping harshly into them. She rubbed her side, frustration once again filling her. She reached up with one of her hands, her hands meeting a series of cupboards.
“Well maybe one of these cupboards will have a lightbulb in it.”
It was worth a shot. She reached up, hooking her fingertips into the edge of the cupboard and then yanking it open. From touch, she could tell that the cupboard was filled to the brim with junk. She wrapped her fingers around the first object she could find and pulled it out. It was a sealed box, likely filled with some other knickknack or such. She ripped the tape off and opened the box. She tilted it over and poured the content into her hands.
“Well this was utterly pointless,” she commented as her fingers were met with a tennis ball. “At least it’s something for you to play with, Rusty.”
She tossed the ball, hearing Rusty’s paws chase after it. A playful howl indicated that Voxel was joining in.

She laughed when she heard the sound of Rusty thud as he slammed into something. The resounding meep assured her that he was thankfully unharmed. The kitten creature was rather uncoordinated, but with a little training, perhaps his coordination could improve. She continued to dig through the cupboard, trying to find herself a lightbulb. Maybe then she’d be able to explore the room properly. Her fingers met with various utensils. Voxel leaped up onto the counter, presumably to help her searching. She removed another boxed object and began to inspect it. Voxel nipped at her fingertips, the action having no impact on her physically.
“I suppose that means you don’t like this box,” she speculated.
She put it back and grabbed another one instead. This time Voxel watched her without interference. She opened the box, a yelp of alarm escaping her as she activated a mousetrap. She managed to avoid injury, but Voxel’s laughing bark filled the room.
“That was rude,” she told him.
The tennis ball bounced against her shoes as Rusty chased it towards her. She leaned down and scratched him behind the ears.
“At least you’re on my side,” she told him.
Rusty let out an affectionate meep before returning to his game.

She checked the cupboards some more, managing to find a few more of those odd leaves and a few odds and ends. She stashed away the items she deemed good, but none of them were what she needed at the current moment. Rusty pawed at the things she discarded. Admittedly, tossing things to floor might not be the most respectful thing to do. She figured they would at least serve to help keep Rusty amused. She searched through another cupboard, feeling around for anything that might contain a lightbulb. She glanced at Voxel, making sure that he wasn’t planning more tricks to play on her.
“Be nice,” she warned him.
She then turned back to the next cupboard, searching through it as she had done the others. It was a time-consuming process, but absolutely necessary at this point. She pulled out a variety of small boxes, intending to open them in an area that was easier for her to work in. Voxel regarded her haul with curiosity. He moved closer, intending to investigate the objects once Fanged had released them from the boxes. The first object she removed was a pair of pliers. Potentially useful, but not what she was looking for.

She searched for a great deal longer until she finally found a lightbulb. Now she could only hope that it wasn’t broken. Rusty meeped happily as the girl patted his head as she stepped past him. She was gradually getting him more used to touch and it seemed to be helping a great deal. She moved back to the lamp she had found earlier. It was a little tall for her to reach easily, but she was successful when she stood on her tip-toes. She placed the lightbulb into the empty base and screwed it in. The room remained unlit, however.
“I suppose I’ll need to find a switch to turn it on now. Unless of course it’s broken. But we might as well look for a switch first,” she commented.
Voxel pricked his ears forward, picking up on the fact that she needed to search for something. He trotted over to her, focused on the mission. Fanged pressed her hands against the wall at around chest height. That would be the most likely area for the light switch to be. Rusty joined in on the search, pressing against her legs, almost as though he was acting as a buffer between her and anything she might bump into.

The three walked around the length of the room. When they were back near the door they had entered, Fanged’s finger brushed against a switch.
“Of course, it’s always in the last place you look,” she grumbled.
Once she hit the switch, light flooded out of the lightbulb she had installed. She blinked at the sudden brightness. Her eyes watered at the sudden intrusion of light. Once she had adjusted, she took the time to investigate the room once again. Rusty squinted up at her, almost upset that she had turned the lights on.
“Not all of us can see very well in the dark, buddy,” she told him.
Voxel jumped back onto the counter as the girl began to open more cupboards. Fanged had switched objectives and was now looking for food.
“Canned food should be safe to eat, but we’ll need to find something that Rusty is able to eat. Then we’ll need to find some way to open it,” she told him. “I presume you don’t need to eat conventional foods to sustain yourself.”
Rusty meeped as he approached her. He must have been hungry by now, Fanged knew she was absolutely starving.
“I promise I’ll find you something.”
