It was... really, really strange to be coming back to the mines now.
Aubrey had been here before. He remembered this; the tunnels, the darkness, the tools, each entrance opening up before you like a maw. It was just that last time he was here, he had been a great deal smaller, and the tools had been someone else's.
... No, that wasn't quite right. He'd ventured into this place a little with Yeo-reum before, but it felt different that time because it was almost more of a stream than a tunnel, and they had mostly stayed near the entrance anyway, with Yeo-reum playing around in the shallow water. It had been shallow to him, anyway. For Aubrey. it had still been uncomfortably deep, but fortunately not so deep that he had to swim in it.
At least this time it was on dry land. This time his companion didn't need water to get around.
Then again, his companion this time was still a stranger to him, and in that sense, Yeo-reum's company might almost have been preferred... Yeo-reum could be troublesome with his jokes sometimes, but at least Aubrey knew he meant well, and had a reasonably good measure of him, compared to Mytho. Mytho had been a completely unexpected novelty.
But Mytho was also well suited to helping with underground explorations... was what his previous household said. He was part gem dragon, or something like that. Aubrey was a little vague on the details, since a lot of what had been mentioned went right over his head.
In truth, he had brought Mytho here in hopes that taking him to this kind of environment would help... something. Help them bond, maybe, or help Aubrey learn a little more about Mytho, and about what made him tick. At the very least, Aubrey hoped he might enjoy it.
Of all the things he had been told, the one thing that Aubrey did retain was that Mytho was intelligent. Like Drui. Which made the situation a little more awkward, but Aubrey told himself that it was just going to be like living with Drui and Yeo-reum, and that, if things went well, they could become a happy little family, more or less.
Still, even the name--- Mytho--- had been a thing Aubrey chose. There hadn't been a name for the household to give him. Aubrey had asked Mytho if he was alright with it, and Mytho had looked at him with wide dark eyes.
... They could always change it later, when they worked out a better system of communication. It would have to do for now. It just didn't lessen the discomfort any, but Aubrey gamely promised himself that he would do his best. It must have been awkward for Mytho too.
The blank staring was something Mytho did a lot, actually; and it was only now, as they entered the tunnels, that Mytho seemed to... not 'come alive', exactly, but maybe focus down a little bit, turning this way and that to inspect his surroundings. There was still light enough to see by here, at the entrance, but already Aubrey could make out more clearly the glowing crystals and markings on Mytho's body.
A light in the dark, as it were... It was a nice thought. "I guess I'll always be able to find you, even when my flashlight goes out, huh?" Aubrey said with a smile.
Mytho turned to look at him as he spoke, but the expression on Mytho's face was the same as it had ever been. After a while, his laughter died away, and he cleared his throat. "Um," he said. "I guess we should go in, huh?"
Not that Mytho needed him to say that. Before Aubrey himself even took a step, Mytho was already venturing in with quick, certain steps. Before long, Aubrey was forced to be glad that Mytho was so easy to spot, since he was now having to run to keep up. Mytho, for his part, had already broken into a full run, his slender legs carrying him quick and light down the stretch of tunnel, his footfalls making not a sound.
Aubrey's own advance was much less graceful. He could hear clearly the sound of his own steps, and the sound of his own breathing in his ears too. He kept those ears pricked forward, straining for a sound from Mytho, though he never did catch one. "Hey, wait up!" he tried, when Mytho began to pull a little too far ahead of him.
