Fanged continued working, slowly chipping away sections of the wall until she had the outline to an entrance finished. She stopped for a moment, pausing to wipe the sweat from her brow. This was going to take a while. Harper waited patiently, ger gaze fixed raptly to Fanged’s pick as the woman struck it repeatedly against the wall. She seemed to be watching her carefully, waiting for something specific to happen. Before Fanged could dwell on what the Karzik was possibly waiting for, she felt a rumble. She struck the pick a final time into the wall and then stepped back.
“Is this what you’re waiting for?” she asked Harper as the rumbling grew more prevalent.
Harper stood still her gaze fixed now on the area that Fanged had been working in. After a few more seconds, the dirt began to stream down from the walls. With each passing second, the stream of dirt increased.

Fanged felt apprehensive as the dirt continually increased. Just before she got used to the idea of a tunnel collapse, there was a large thud as the wall in front completely caved in.
“Wow, who knew I could cause something like that to happen!” Fanged exclaimed.
The thought was both scary and exhilarating. It was like she had achieved a high she didn’t even know she was chasing. Harper hopped forward, eager to investigate the rubble. Fanged swapped tools now. The pick wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, the shovel would be used to accomplish the next task. They would need to dig their way through. She didn’t even need a break as she got prepared for more hard work. The prospect of finding more treasure or making some real progress through the tunnel was too enticing for her to resist. Even Harper appeared excited as the Karzik happily jumped up onto the collapsed pile of dirt.

Walking along, everything seems rather normal. That is, until the gravel beneath your feet starts to slip, sending you and your pet tumbling into a deep pit. The fall stings quite a bit, but that isn’t the biggest problem you face. The pit is rather deep, making the trip back up difficult at best.

When Fanged joined Harper up on the collapsed tunnel, her heart lurched as she felt the earth give way beneath her and Harper. She was quick to hang onto all her tools, not wanting to lose them in the impending fall. Harper didn't seem alarmed even as they fell. Fanged grabbed onto her so that they wouldn't get separated in the fall. Surprisingly, the Karzik did not protest her touch. They didn't fall for long, but the woman was still sore when they landed. She had twisted herself so that her rear would take the brunt of the fall. She then had Harper cradled in her lap, protecting her completely from the impact.
"I don't know why I expected any different. What I was doing had it's risks, but I figured that would be more along the lines of tunnel collapsing on top of us rather than beneath us," Fanged spoke softly.

Harper hopped off of her lap and craned her neck upwards. They had fallen quite a distance and it was lucky that neither of them had been badly injured in the fall. Fanged couldn't bring herself to stand just yet. She sat in position, waiting for the sting of impact to settle and for her heartbeat to calm.
"Okay, okay. I am almost ready," she muttered.
Harper was fine to wait for the woman to recover. She was much calmer than Fanged was, simply staring up and watching the hole that they had fallen through. When Fanged followed her gaze, she frowned to see a strange shadow looming ominously overhead. She froze not certain whether her eyes were deceiving her or not. After a few moments, the shadow disappeared, swallowed up by the surrounding darkness. Not wanting to remain in the area they were currently in, Fanged stood up and brushed the dirt off.

Harper inspected her closely as she stood up, searching the woman for any sign of real injury. When she deemed Fanged fine, she hopped back and looked expectantly at her.
“I suppose you want me to set the pace then. It’ll be slow going for a bit, but I should recover soon,” Fanged remarked.
The shadowy figure remained at the forefront of her mind. She couldn’t help but think that is posed a threat to her, despite it not having actually proven itself as such.
“If we move further, I’ll probably feel better,” she commented.
Harper perked up when Fanged started walking through the newfound tunnel. Now that they were here, they might as well make the most of it. She found herself in a bad head space. She found herself sometimes trapped in the negativity of her own mind and this was now one of those times. She didn’t know how to snap out of it.

As they ventured further into the tunnel, their presence alerted a swarm of bats and caused them to rush forward, deeper into the tunnel. Fanged frowned, fully aware of the diseases that bats tended to carry. Their immune systems were strong which ironically made them more likely to infect others as they protected themselves from disease. Harper watched them with interest. The woman wondered if she felt a sense of kinship with the creatures. Both of them utilized echolocation after all. Was Harper aware enough about what a bat was to understand the similarities?
The thought felt a little strange since considering her pet’s intelligence was a rather odd concept. She knew some lab pets had an intelligence that was comparable to humans, but Karziks weren’t one of those species. They were more along the lines of regular animals. There was nothing wrong with that, but the disparity in intelligence could be recognized.

She decided that ultimately, she would accept Harper for who she was. There was nothing wrong with a having a creature’s level of intelligence.
“It kind of sucks that we ended up here. This place is narrow,” she grumbled. Of course, she didn’t want to dwell on the negatives too much, but she’d allow herself a small stretch of time dedicated to bitching about her bad luck.
She brushed more dirt of her clothing, lamenting that her shirt was likely too ruined to bother salvaging. There was a tear in the sleeve and another hole by her waist. She shrugged and moved further on, trying to take her mind off of things. Harper hopped along with a sense of ambivalence that Fanged wished she could possess as well. She was a bit too much of an overthinker to be able to simply let things go. Thankfully, Harper was more present than she was.

She decided that ultimately, she would accept Harper for who she was. There was nothing wrong with having a creature’s level of intelligence. The only issue she could see with the Karzik was the injured wing, but she wasn’t quite sure how that could be fixed.
“I don’t think the healer’s temple really works in that capacity. This injury wasn’t received in the pit or anything like that. Am I even sure it’s an injury? Her wing could be deformed. I’m not sure what Karziks wings are supposed to look like,” she rambled on.
Harper appeared content to listen to her words. There was no possibility of response, but the fact that the creature still listened meant a lot to the woman. If Fanged could, she would do everything in her power to get the Karzik’s wing fixed.
“Alright time to focus on the mission once again. Let’s find some gems!”

Fanged felt herself steadily calming the longer she walked through the tunnel without incident. She didn’t like being in an unplanned area, but she had to accept her fate at this point. Harper appeared a bit nervous and Fanged vowed to keep her emotions steady in order to help comfort her pet.
“Okay if we head as far away from whatever that mysterious figure was, we should be completely fine,” she muttered.
Harper was fine with Fanged taking the lead for a little while. The woman couldn’t move particularly fast seeing as she was still slightly injured from her fall. For now, she took comfort in the fact that they were in this situation together.
“Please, please let us find some gems. I think I need a little something to make me feel better at this point.”
The mood in the tunnels was still tense, as though they were waiting to be attacked.

For a moment, she considered stopping and actively searching for gems with her tools. However, she also wanted to keep moving and that sense of fear won out over her desire to find treasure. The tunnel was spooky when her nerves were on edge. She wanted desperately to have better control over her emotions, but that was easier said than done. She tried breathing deeply, but that only accomplished so much. She needed to remove herself from the threat.
“Harper, let’s watch each other’s backs, okay?” she spoke aloud to her companion.
Harper stuck close to her, as though sticking together could keep them safe. Fanged assumed it was a safe bet. Harper might not be a menacing creature, but her skills in battle would be more useful than Fanged’s alone. Even if she hadn’t been formally trained yet. For now, natural instinct in battle would be what they had to rely on.

The ground ahead of her began to slope, making the area marginally more difficult to traverse. She liked to think she was more graceful than the average person, but even this was difficult for her.
“Watch your footing Harper. It might be tricky for you with your injured wing as well,” she remarked.
Harper responded by slowing down her pace alongside the woman. The two of them continued on in silence. Fanged found herself trying to figure the Karzik out. While she was a little lost in thought, she snapped to attention as she realized the path in front suddenly ended in a steep drop.
“How on earth are we meant to get down there?” she questioned aloud.
This would take a bit of consideration and planning to get through. She rubbed at her top set of ears as she became lost in thought once again as different scenarios poured over her mind.

“Maybe we can jump down there. The drop doesn’t look too far and we already have experience with falling,” she mused aloud.
Harper appeared hesitant as she observed the drop in front of them. Fanged would need to figure out a way to get them both down with minimal risk of injury. She wondered if the Karzik would allow herself to be held for a little while. The Karzik should be able to be held. Her size wasn’t too large. It was simply a matter of whether Harper would allow herself to be carried for a brief period or not.
“Alright we’re going to test something out here,” she remarked.
She stepped closer to Harper and crouched down. When Harper remained relaxed, Fanged picked hers up. The Karzik remained steady in her grip long enough for her to maneuver the both of them down the steep drop. It wasn’t very far, but jumping down was the only way.

Her legs ached from the shock of impact as she hit the ground. She immediately placed Harper down on the ground and she relaxed when she was now free to move around independently from her. She didn’t mind being carried, but she much preferred having full control over her movements. At the bottom of the drop, there was some ore that she could collect. She grabbed them quickly and placed the treasure inside her bag. Fanged grasped her flashlight comfortably in her hands, slightly unnerved by the darkness in the area she found herself in. Harper moved closer to her, making sure that the woman was okay after the drop.
“Nothing more than a bruise if there even is a mark,” she reassured her.
The sudden light from her flashlight acted as a calming agent as it illuminated the shadows around them. Nothing could hide from them for long with the tool.
