Morgan had a ton of stuff going on over the rest of the month, but at the very least Matsuba had gotten quite used to Morgan in the meantime. While Morgan was gone, the work teams worked quite well to get the more building-related tasks done, and Morgan finally got a moment to go back to the gardens for about an hour to see what everything looked like now. It hadn't taken too much money to get a little hutch built for Buttonbuck. They were already going to make a little hutch for Kodama, so they made sure that the two had houses near one another nestled into the roots of a huge tree that was in the garden. The big roots were perfect for making for warm abodes along with the excellently built hutches, and food was provided of course.
"Matsuba, come here!" Morgan called, once they got there.

It did not at all take very long for Matsuba to come as he was called. He was slow, of course, but once Morgan caught sight of him as he moved along leaning on that stick, Morgan could easily keep up with where he was. None of the other creatures were around at the second, or at least not near to where Morgan was. Morgan knew where all the other ones would be; the two pachees would be at the tree, Munnin would be near it in a large hiding spot that was a tree surrounded by mushrooms. Morgan was quiet as Matsuba made for them, and they continued thinking about the critters here. Where was Walnut? Morgan hadn't seen Walnut in a bit, but they were sure that she was around here, lying around in sunbeams or maybe sleeping the way through the winter. Morgan really didn't blame it for that.

As for Matsuba, though, it would seem that he much preferred the winter to other times. There was a fresh layer of snow on the ground and he seemed to absolutely love it. He was making his way across the snow quite a bit more easily than he was with the rocks and grass and stuff from before. The land was quite beautiful, but Morgan disliked the cold quite heavily. Like Walnut, Morgan wished that they were somewhere curled up napping the winter away, and perhaps with some coffee and a good book. However, Morgan did need to check this place out just to make sure that things were taken care of before going back home and warming their cold toes. They had managed to come here on the way back home from work, so they hadn't even had chance to really relax today. It was a new thing to them, and quite exhausting.

Matsuba finally made it to Morgan from where he had been staying in the pine tree copse. Morgan had made sure to have him built a shelter there, and he was taken well care of. Morgan patted him on the shoulder gently (it would feel weird to pet a bipedal creature on the head) and then offered him a treat. "Good job, good job getting h-here fella." Morgan said, even though they were really paying attention to other things. "I-i'm just here to uh, to check out stuff. S-see if there is a-anything to pick up." Morgan was quite cold, with snow all over the ground it was easy to see that it was cold out there. Matsuba seemed to be pretty fine, though. He was built for the cold, wasn't he? Matsuba was a quiet creature. Morgan wondered if he ever got lonely, since he didn't seem to hang out with other critters.

Morgan wasn't sure at first if they wanted to have a garden, because it was a lot of work. However, now that they did actually have one, Morgan wanted to get as many different types of produce as possible from the garden since they could. Plus, they wanted Matsuba to be very used to them before next season. Heck, they wanted to make Walnut used to them when it got warmer in the spring. Morgan thought that she would be quite sweet, but who knew how she would act? Leaf scatters do look super cute, but who knows. They also really needed to work with the greater dragon oak, though Morgan didn't really know what one of their acorns even looked like. They also wanted to teach the dragon-oak to be a mount some day! Morgan wanted to know how to ride every dragon-like creature that the labs had ever created.

Morgan did not have a whole lot more time here this month to check out Matsuba. It had been a while since they had come back after they had worked with the creatures last time; there hadn't been a whole lot of progress then. King of Evergreens were only producing during the first couple of winter months, so Morgan had put back a little bit of time to go back and see if they could not manage to get two more of those berries from him until next year. Morgan thought it would be nice to get an extra few, just in case. However, they were sure that it would be easy to get Matsuba to come over here now that he was properly trained. That had taken quite a bit of work, but it was quite fine in the long run. "Matsuba!" Morgan called out, hoping that he was close by.

It would turn out that Matsuba was not at all close by; and instead was going to have to take a while to get to Morgan. That was fine, Morgan thought, they'd just stay here in this area so that they would be easily found. Besides, Morgan had settled down a mushroom growing log not too far from the front of their garden, so it wouldn't be too bad to go by there and see how the mycelium was growing while they waited for him. Morgan took a stroll over that way and stood there, looking at all of the Hen of the Woods that was beginning to grow. It didn't take too long for Matsuba to get over to where Morgan was near the log. Morgan was pleased to see that he had returned; his training had stuck quite well it would seem! "Matsuba, good boyo." Morgan mumbled at him.

The king of evergreen was standing nearby, leaning on his stick and looking into the log. The Log was absolute huge; one that Morgan had bought that was very hollow, it was specifically for growing the hen of the woods mushrooms that they liked to eat often times in meals. Morgan was standing inside of the log, which was more than tall enough that Morgan did not at all have to stoop to stand in the log. Light streamed in from either side of the mushroom-covered log. The king of evergreen peered in curiously; perhaps he had not seen the log before or yet rather, and was just now getting a good look at it. Morgan motioned for him to come in, and he nervously waddled in, nearly tripping over the bark as he did so. Though bipedal, it did not seem that he was the best at walking on hind legs.

It made sense, of course. It didn't really look like the king of evergreen was really built to actually stand on their hind legs and walk really well. One would think that the Labs would be much better at working with them than this, but then again; the quest for the 'best ever creature' was really subjective, Morgan guessed. That was really shocking Morgan thought though, they would think that something like this wouldn't be done simply because it made sense to make the 'best ever' ... Elf... Plant thing that walks on hind legs to actually, you know, walk on the hind legs correctly. Still, Morgan was more interested in seeing what was at the tip of his tail than anything else; did he actually have berries right now? Morgan hoped that he had at least two more; that was their goal for the month and they were running out of time for it.

Morgan was caught between standing there and removing some of the hen of the woods that was ready to be collected from the inner 'walls' of the log, or actually just go back and check out Matsuba first. Eventually, they sighed, and moved over to Matsuba instead. It was obvious that he didn't really feel comfortable getting inside of the log right now and felt like standing right outside of it was good enough for a 'come' command. Morgan patted him on the shoulder as they stepped out of the log and then glanced down. "So you got any berries for me right n-now, boyo?" Morgan asked, mostly rhetorically of course. No need to talk to Matsuba, he wasn't sentient or anything and wouldn't ever really understand what Morgan was saying. Morgan shivered; it was really cold outside, as they leaned down to check to see if they could harvest any...

There were definitely berries there, but the king of evergreen was having none of it for the moment. Morgan sighed; surely they wouldn't have to bribe him with food every single time they went to get any berries from him. "C-come on boyo, you're killin' me. You gotta give me something." Morgan said, making conversation with the air moreso than the creature of course. "Ya only have t-two months a year in season. What're ya gonna do with t-them?" They mumbled, turning around. They would try again later. Morgan moved over to the log again where the hen of the woods was growing in thick. "W-well, since you're being a little bit stingy, I'll gather my f-food." Morgan said. They wanted to get some of the hen of the woods since they were currently doing well (where it was fairly hot and damp in this log, surrounded by snow on the outside.

The particular species of hen of the woods that Morgan had selected to grow here exclusively had a bright yellow spore surface and a dark ruddy top on them, all frilled and excellent looking. These specimens were especially perfect, Morgan knew that plenty of them would be good enough to eat. Morgan pulled out a small knife, and selected a particular hen of the woods mushroom that was perfect for gathering before removing it carefully with the knife. They placed the hen of the woods piece in their wicker basket, and then glanced over at Matsuba. The king of evergreen was still refusing to go into the log, but he wasn't really leaving either, which was good. Morgan wanted him to be around just in case he lost those berries, after all. "Good boyo." Morgan said to him, and then they turned around to look out at the wall of the log yet again.

Morgan quietly continued to gather a few of the hen of the woods. The wicker basket would be good because they would continue to release more spores and those would propagate more in the area. Morgan left all of the overripe and underripe ones to make sure that they would still be able to produce more, and only took the ones ready to eat at the time that they came down. There were several chicken dishes that could be cooked with these excellent mushrooms. They were a good replacement for meat, and though Morgan had no qualms about eating meat, sometimes it was nice to change it up. Morgan did love cooking, after all. Matsuba continued to watch them from outside of the log until Morgan was completely done gathering the mushrooms. It was a very good yield today, they thought; this would be enough for several dishes, though Morgan would have to cook them quick for peak freshness.
