A bare patch of dirt. That was all that Fiera’s garden consisted of right now. She had been given a broad patch by the labs- apparently all citizens were allowed one- but for what reason, she couldn’t fathom. She had passed many unused spots on the way here, so it would appear that she wasn’t alone in that capacity. She had been here a couple times before, but she didn’t really do much before giving up again. She had never grown anything before, so she had no clue if she had a green thumb or not. There was only one way to find out though, she supposed. “Helping” her in this was a little creature she had come to call Rachei, bouncing along next to her. Apparently plant based pets were supposed to be helpful when gardening. Something about symbiosis with the plants. Whatever. Fiera 1 Rachei 0.1/0.1 1

Rachei was a burnt orange color, with green ear tips, smooth hairless skin, and a leafy tail, which had only gotten a little fuller with the changing seasons. It was quite a unique look in comparison to regular animals, but among lab pets she was one of the crowd. The creature chattered happily, rolling through the dirt. Fiera would have been grossed out, but she supposed it was normal for a plant based creature. Apparently, despite Rachei’s appearance implying a relationship with rodents, she was really closer genetically to certain types of trees and bushes, not that Fiera could tell by looking at her. The creature had insatiable energy, finding every little thing interesting... until it wasn’t and she rushed off to do something else. It would be simple for her to get lost, but luckily Fiera had an idea- and the supplies- to prevent that from happening.

Today, Fiera was going to build a fence. That’s right, a whole entire fence. She had picked up the cut planks today, some nails, and the paint. She brought her shovel with her as well- she might normally use it for mining, but it would work well enough in this situation too. A fence would help keep her more rambunctious pets from escaping the garden as mentioned, but it would keep various ne’er do wells out too. She wasn’t expecting anything worse than a rabbit of course- who would rob somebody’s garden. Well, Fiera probably, if she was hungry enough. But that wasn’t today. She dropped the handles of the wheelbarrow as she reached her patch of land, and moved to untie the string she had Rachei tied to from her belt. She reattached it to the wheelbarrow’s handle. It wasn’t pretty, but it would prevent her escape.

Then, she dumped all of her supplies onto the floor, wincing at how loudly they clattered. Planks and nails, a white paint bucket. She’d sort it out herself, it was fine. Fences were definitely allowed- she had seen plenty on her way here. And if she carved out a few extra feet of land for herself while putting it down, well who could blame her for mismeasuring! Once she had all of her supplies sorted, she grabbed the shovel, ready to start digging. The planks had to be planted deep to get them to stand up, after all. She unrolled a piece of string that she knew was the width of her plot- and then started digging a few feet beyond that. “Don’t y’all anyone, eh Rachei?” She said. “It’ll be our little secret.” She chuckled conspiratorially. Rachei only chattered loudly in response, peering at Fiera curiously.

The critter quickly lost interest however, and skittered away to investigate the tools Fiera dropped. The humanish was pretty sure she wasn’t stupid enough to skewer herself on a nail, and everything else was pretty safe for her to mess with. She didn’t think the leaf scatter could break anything either, with how light she was, so Fiera opted to ignore her. As she worked, the hole got deeper and deeper, with the soil she was removing being layered right back onto her own patch. The more dirt the merrier, right? ISNT that how gardening worked? Soon, the hole was deep enough for... well, a fence post hopefully. She walked over to her pile of supplies, looking over her planks until she found one she approved of. This would do it- the first plank of her fence. She hefted it under her arm, and walked back toward her hole.

She planted it in the hole, and it almost immediately fell back over again. Oh right. Needed to fill in some dirt, there. Fiera ran back to her dirt pile and heaped some scoops closer to her first fence post. Wait, was she supposed to paint the fence before or after she put it in the ground? She paused for a moment, but waves the thought away. She’d paint it after, whatever. How bad could it be. Then, she levied the fence post upward again, leaning it on one leg. With her arms, she used the shovel to scrape the thick, dark soil back toward her. Slowly, she managed to maneuver it into the hole around the fence post, filling it up. After every layer, she packed it down as tightly as possible, to reduce the chance of a wobble. Finally, the ground seemed flat, and she carefully let go of thd post,

It stayed up! Fiera chuckled slyly at her craftsmanship- all ten minutes of it. She decided to maybe not poke at it too much though, just to be sure, she turned back to her wheelbarrow, finding Rachei sitting on top of it, standing at attention. Next to her were some... objects. “Whatcha got there, Rachei?” Fiera asked curiously, approaching the leafscatter. It looked like she had been busy while Fiera was messing with the fence post, and had found some things. Fiera picked one up, turning it over in her hand curiously. The critter had found some pomegranates! Three of them, in fact, all plump and ripe. In addition to that, there were a couple of delicately striped mushrooms. Fiera glanced around. Rachei was still tied to the wheelbarrow- where had she gotten all these from? Perhaps plant pets were better to have in the garden than she had thought...

Regardless of their source, she wasn’t going to look a delicious gift horse in the mouth. She threw the fruits in her personal backpack, A must have on all of her adventures, in a plastic bag reserved just for the fruits of her labor- or Rachei’s, as it were. The leaf scatter didn’t seem to mind Fiera taking the fruits. Instead, she seemed to take it as permission to go look for more, jumping off of the barrow and rooting around in the dirt some more. Fiera left her to it, and grabbed another plank while she was at the pile. One fence post down, many more to go. It would take her a while to finish, but with any luck it would be all worth it for a fancy looking fence. Oh, and to keep thieving critters out of her garden. That would be nice too.

Fiera threw the new plank down next to her initial fence post, cringing as the mis-aimed toss sent it clattering against its fellow. A quick check revealed that nothing bad had happened though, and the first plank remained standing straight. The humanish breathed a sigh of relief and scootched the new plank over, ready to start digging the new hole. The shovel dug swiftly through the soft soil, the sound mirrored by Rachei’s digging behind her. Is that where she was getting the fruits? The mushrooms she understood, but who would bury entire ripe pomegranates in the middle of someone else’s plot? Oh well. Probably best not to question it- the labs were definitely an inscrutable place. Instead, she decided to focus on the small but deep hole she was digging in front of her, plunging downward. She checked every couple of scoops to make sure she wasn’t making her first post list over.

After confirming the security of her existing work, Fiera prepared to plant her next post. She had placed the dirt pile a little closer this time, ensuring that she didn’t have to scramble to bring it over. Instead, she could just hold the post in place with one hand while scooping dirt into the hole with the shovel in the other. After every layer, she was sure to tamp down the soft dirt. Overall, the whole process took her about fifteen minutes. She hoped this rate kept up, and she didn’t meet any harder patches of soil. At this rate, she could have the fence done by the end of the day, and they could all go home. If not, well... she could leave, but it would be awfully weird to leave a half-dond fence on someone else- er, on her property. Yes, definitely hers and not quietly stealing a foot or two off of someone else.

A few hours later, the sun was high in the sky. That was less an indicator of a great deal of time passing however, and more a note of how short the days were now. Fiera had arrived at the gardens early because of this, as she knew that she would have limited time to work. In that time however, she had made a great deal of progress. She now had a long line of fence posts standing in a long line, the first side of her square. Now it just needed a few finishing touches- specifically, some bars at the top and bottom to keep all of the fence posts linked together. Thankfully, she had some extra planks cut out just for that. She just... had to find them first. The humanish dug through the pile of planks, cursing herself for mixing them all together like that. Real smart.

She dug through the pile, looking for a plank that didn’t have the spiky top to it. There wouldn’t be a lot of them in here, so it was a bit like looking for a splinter inducing needle in a haystack. Finally, she dragged out an appropriate looking plank and sighed in relief. Rachei chattered with excitement as Fiera victoriously held it aloft. “About time...” She grumbled, and made her way back to the fence. She dropped the plank, and grabbed some nails from the divot in the ground she had made for them. She didn’t want to step on one and end her garden session with a trip to the hospital, after all. Then, she measured the distance from the ground to the point she wanted the connector plank at, putting a little scratch in the wood where she wanted it to be before setting aside the ruler.
