God, look how effortlessly Silver jumped down from those steps. Darn young people, with their. Beautiful legs. Or something. "Yeah, I'm right behind you." She said, even though she definitely wasn't, hobbling after the other humanish. Cepe looked at them both obliviously, as mussimanders were wont to do. The cracks under him had stopped spreading, and it looked like the pressure had distributed evenly. "Hey, I think-" She said, following behind Silver. "I think the cracks have stopped. If you just ease him off, it... it should be fine. Just. Does he even know 'come'? Even if he swims, that water's freezing, and he's not the uh... the kind of critter that makes its own body heat, right?" She started sliding toward the bank- and saw Lincoln push through the reeds on the opposite side. "No. No, no no no. Lincoln, you stay right there. You big dummy." She hissed, trying to reason with the stubborn beast. If he decided to step onto the ice with Cepe...

Silver was conflicted. On one hand, Cepe was surely heavy enough to fall right through the ice. On the other hand, he was pretty close to the shore where it should be shallow, and trying to move him might set off the ice anyway. Silver doubted that he was smart enough to run toward land if the cracks startled him. He would probably run further into the lake where the ice was even thinner. They frowned with general concern and looked back at Fiera as if she had the answer that he didn't.
"Well, sort of," Silver said in response to whether or not Cepe knew the commands. He had no 'formal' training but he did more or less understand what he was being told in a simple sort of way. "I'll try again, he'll be okay, I think," they said it out loud but their tone was shaky as though they didn't really believe it.
"Come here Cepe, come here," they clicked their tongue and tapped their thighs. Cepe looked over at Silver and decided that he might as well move. He went to stand up and his claw crashed through the ice, dipping his paw into the water. He made an undignified squeak and bolted toward the shore, smashing bits of ice the entire way. If he was lucky, he wouldn't fall in before he got back to solid ground...

While Silver tried to 'reason' with Cepe, Fiera rushed around to the other side of the bank. "You work out that on your end! I'm sure you'll be fine!" She said, even as she heard the cracking of ice and the squeal of a surprised Mussimander. Augh, this could go bad fast, but she needed to make sure that Lincoln didn't make it even worse. She skidded to a stop next to the lamadidron, who was plodding in a steadfast manner toward the ice. "That's not! Ground! Lincoln! Not a good place to lay down, come back here!" She stammered, and Lincoln cast a glance back at her before snorting and turning away. "Lincoln. NO." She said, putting her foot down. The lamadidron huffed and squatted down on the pond's bank, refusing to move. Fiera sighed with relief- a lamadidron that was stubbornly staying put was far better than one that was flailing in water. If Cepe was too heavy for the ice, the rock encrusted lamadidron would likely shatter it in an instant. Fiera glanced up, to see how Silver was doing on their end.

At least the garden's harvest was unfazed by the chaos, but serves to make the mussimander cling to it's mushrooms all the more stubbornly.

Cepe's tail hit the water and gave him the last boost he needed to bolt across the ice onto dry land. Thank goodness they made it all the way without crashing completely through. He shivered and pressed his face up against Silver's warm body. It was so cold in that water! Now the cold air was nipping at the parts where he was wet and he was visibly trembling. Though the mushroom part of them grew best during the coldest months, the rest of them didn't fair so well.
"I know, isn't it scary? That's why you shouldn't wander away from me like that! I was worried about you," Silver hugged Cepe's head the best they could, but it was awkward. "Hey, ah, Fiera was it?" man they were bad with names. "Do you have a towel or something we could borrow?" They looked behind them where they were expecting her to be, but she wasn't there any more. She was off chasing her own big dumb creature off of the ice. Silver wanted to laugh, but they held it back lest they bother her. It was actually pretty important that the Lamididron didn't fall through the ice, either.

Fiera slowly backed Lincoln up the bank, stepping in front of him and getting into his comfort zone until he begrudgingly backed up. "That's it, dummy, get outta there." She said, waving her arms at him. Eventually Lincoln honked loudly at her, but turned around fully and retreated back into the trees, from which he glared at her angrily. She sighed with relief, and finally turned back to Silver. Fiera was it? She went through all the effort of giving this person a tour and... ah crap, and their lizard, whatever it was called, had fallen into HER pond. She could get sued for that. Could she get sued for that?
Good god. This clever silver fox, the little... Fiera seethed with a variety of swear words that were on the tip of her tongue. It was the perfect ruse. Go find some dumb shmuck's garden, and claim that you were just 'wandering through'. Bring along a pretty pet that's excusably dumb to help lull them into a false sense of security. Ask them for a tour. Everything's going well, you're making 'friends', when woops! There's an accident involving your cute little pet, one that court juries and judges would 'aw' over more than a person. You sue the owner of the garden for damages. Easy money. Game, set, match. And gods, Fiera had fallen for it like an IDIOT. And to think she had nearly... ugh... opened up to this salaves in the grass.
...Well played. Like a fiddle, in fact. Fiera almost thought that she had made a friend today, but instead she found something that she'd have to keep much closer. A worthy opponent. "...You know?" Fiera said, looking over her shoulder. Her voice was cool, calm, collected. Friendship was something foreign to her, but dangerous dances of law and politics? Now THAT was a game she knew how to play. "I do think I have some towels. Right this way, Silver." She said, walking back down the path and gesturing for the humanish to follow. Hah, even the name was fitting, now that she thought of it. Silver like a clever fox. Silver tongued. Clever, clever.

Silver didn't have a great grasp of people's motivations under normal circumstances, so they just took everything Fiera said at her word. What reason did they have not to trust her? Once she had cleared up that situation with her Lamadidron, which was totally not just copying Cepe, nope, they were happy to go along with whatever happened next. She did seem unusually quiet compared to how much she had been talking before, but they didn't overthink that. It probably wasn't important.
Cepe kept shivering and pressing himself as close to Silver as possible, which threatened to knock him over more than once. They kept pushing him back a little bit but otherwise allowed him to almost bowl them over with every step. They would just adapt around it like they always did. "That would be great, thank you," Silver said to Fiera's offer of towels. Maybe they could even go inside and have a nice chat or something! Actually, how far away were them from anything resembling a house? They realized they had no idea how far they wandered before they got here.

Fiera was silent on the walk back, with Lincoln hugging close to her leg for once. She kept glancing back at Silver, and offering smiles to keep them from suspicion. They couldn't know that she was on to her- not yet. Soon they were back on the gravel path leading to the entrance of Fiera's garden. "The towels are right over here." She said, gesturing to the shed right beyond the treeline. "One moment, Silver." She said, and hopped over the divider to the garden shed. She pulled open the door and looked through the shelves, finding a dusty stack of towels in the back. Boy, she never thought she'd need these. Like, ever. But life had its own ways of throwing you little curveballs, such as lawsuit junkies in your garden. "Here you go." She said, shaking one out and handing it to Silver. "It's a little dusty, but still good. After all, it's not every day that someone just! Falls in your pond!" She said, adding in a hollow laugh. "Cepe's looking awfully cold, though. You might want to take him home. Wouldn't want him to get hurt, after all." She said, her eyes glittering.

She sure was smiling a lot. Did she have a crush on them? Silver hoped not. That would be really awkward. Not that it wasn't already a little awkward anyway. They kept glancing back at Cepe to make sure that he was feeling alright. He continued to shiver a little bit, but he wasn't literally dying, so they felt like it was under control for now.
Fiera disappeared into a shed and came back out with towels. Why did she keep towels in there? Oh well there was a lake, maybe they were for swimming or sunbathing in the summer. They accepted the towel and let out a dry laugh. She definitely seemed annoyed. "Thanks, yea, Cepe always manages to surprise me." They idly rubbed the frigid water off of the giant Mussimander while Fiera watched on. "What do you think, boy? Time to go home? I'll make you some tea." They smiled at the idea of tea.
"Ah, thanks again, you have a lovely garden, I'd love to see it in springtime some day." They awkwardly handed the now damp towel back and went on their way to wander into someone else's private space, most likely.

Spring was finally, well... springing in the gardens. Icy patches were still present here and there, but for the most part Fiera was free to start planting. The news hadn't officially said "Hey, it's spring!" yet, but Fiera wasn't about to let that stop her. How much could a little frost hurt her saplings? Not at all, she bet! The humanish had ordered some flowers to be delivered to her garden in advance- which meant that she could spend the rest of the day planting them! Hopefully they'd be there, sitting on the entry path as soon as she walked in. With her today, to 'help', was the newest addition to Fiera's houluh. Bubbles wasn't a first generation houluh, like Opal and Pauline. And he wasn't the offspring of her houluh either, like Fox. Instead, her latest acquisition was from the houluh adoption agency, adding some much needed fresh blood to her lineages. Fiera 1 Bubbles 0.1/0.1 1

Bubbles was a houluh from Witholm and Natural's stock. Fiera knew those breeders well by now, having bred her own houluh, Pauline, to one of Natural's in the past. They were definitely the best known houluh breeders in the lab, and produced excellent stock. Bubbles was no different- she had one of the most beautiful coats that Fiera had ever seen, soft grey fading down to white, with various spots of grey scattered across her fur. Even her eyes were a dark grey, nearly black in color. Overall, she was a gorgeous houluh and Fiera was glad to have her. She'd have to work fast though- the adoption agency was timed, so to speak. If she didn't get the houluh nearly debutante show ready within the month, they'd request her back. This made sense, of course- it was to prevent hoarding of houluh that people weren't going to properly take care of.

Fiera was an excellent caretaker of houluh, though. All of hers were fantastically cared for, and Bubbles would be another to join those ranks. Before she started training Bubbles though, she wanted to get to know her a bit better first. Fiera found that pets that she spent a lot of time with first generally took to training a lot better than those she didn't. Besides, she needed to get this gardening done anyway, before the flowers began to wilt- why not kill two izer with one stone? She wasn't expecting Bubbles to be particularly helpful, mind you. Juvenile houluh generally weren't, if she was being honest. But hopefully the fresh air and space to run would help the young pup to get some much needed exercise while Fiera got some much needed gardening done. For all she knew, maybe the houluh would dig some holes for her, help her out a bit.

The dirt path through the land took them on a winding path between gardens, all in various states of disrepair. Fiera's was the only one for miles that was actually occupied. All residents of the labs got the opportunity to take care of a garden, but not everyone actually took advantage of that. Fiera's had sprung up over the course of a couple months though, going from a dried out scrap of land to a small oasis in the middle of nowhere. It had taken a lot of hard work, but she was quite proud of what had been accomplished. Now, with any luck (and a lot of hard work), she would be able to make it even better than before. All of her tools were already in the garden, along with the plants- all she needed on her was her backpack full of snacks, and her houluh alongside her.

Soon she found herself in front of the picket fence of her garden, and swung it open gently. It's movement was completely silent, just as she had designed it. Perfection. She let Bubbles come in after her, and the houluh was happy to trot on in, sniffing the air as she went. Fiera supposed that Bubbles had never seen anything like this before, having spent her life in a kennel before this. It must all be so new to her, so shiny. She realized that the houluh was probably going to get into a lot of trouble as a result. Well, she'd cross that bridge when she came to it- Bubbles deserved the opportunity to explore a bit, get to know the lay of the land, see nature a bit. Fiera closed the gate again, letting her explore the flower beds. Sure enough, there was something waiting for the humanish just inside.
