She lifted the plank up, trying to keep it straight. It was difficult to do so, and it wasn’t like she brought a leveler or anything like that. All she had was her trusty hammer, some wood, and some nails. Whatever though, she’d still make something that looked nice. She placed the mail against it, scoring the wood, holding the plank in place with one knee. Then, she raised her hammer and gently tapped in the nail. She had never done anything like this before, but it was a lot easier than she thought it would be. It slid through the wood like butter into bread, and soon Fiera had a plank nailed to another plank- albeit free swinging. From there, she was supposed to mail it from the other side too... right? It probably wouldn’t hurt, and she walked around to the other side of the fence.

Another couple of quick taps, and that side was nailed down too. As a result, the connecting board was no longer free swinging, but loosely held to the fence... and would probably be dragging it over onto the ground if not for Fiera quickly running around again to hold it down securely. Rachei chattered again with concern, and Fiera waved her hand over the side of the fence. “It’s fine dear, I’m right here!” She said cheerily, and heard the leafscatter go back to digging around in the dirt. Meanwhile, Fiera held the other end of the board up, leaning back to look at it awkwardly. It certainly seemed straight. That would do then, she supposed, and picked up another nail from the divot. She held it and the hammer up, and a few taps later it was embedded in the wood with the rest of the nails.

From there, it was just a matter of making sure the board was secure. Fiera put a couple more nails in one end of the board, then the other. Then she repeated the process for every board through the middle, making sure the connector board was nailed to every post it overlapped. She didn’t need just one falling over because she forgot to nail it down. Then, she sat back to admire her work. Lovely... now she just had to do it like, five more times. With a groan and some crackling from old, uncooperative joints, Fiera hauled herself up and over to the pile of planks again. She might as well dig the rest of those connectors out now. Rachei skittered up to her as she approached, and Fiera gave the leafscatter a reassuring pat on the head. Despite appearances the creature had no fur and instead had smooth, warm skin.

January was trickling away before her, but Fiera thought that maybe she could still get some gardening done. Not that she really wanted to, but she knew it was the last month that she could get some of the mysterious magical berries from her king of the evergreen, Michael. They had a variety of uses as far as she knew, but the most prominent was in the creation of nodes. Those nodes would allow Fiera to use magic- something that she didn't even think existed before she came to the labs. Needless to say, she knew she'd have to investigate herself. And the only way to do that? Make a node. So here she was, getting ready to dig around in the dirt all day with a weird... cat, elf, plant thing to see what sort of fruits and veggies she could dig up. Would it work? Only time could tell.
Post by Fiera Ferella on Jan 28, 2020 9:19:57 GMT -6
She already had most of the other ingredients for the node, of course. Granted, she'd love to find more magic crystals to make a stronger node, but she had at least a couple to tide her over, not to mention the mind gems or whatever they were called. The weird, hot pink ones. That meant that the berries were the only ingredient she still needed. Well, that and a piece of her soul. She wasn't really sure what the node making instructions meant by that, but she was sure that it was like. A metaphorical piece, or a special ritual or prayer or something. You couldn't literally take out a piece of one's soul, right? There was no way of telling if souls even existed! Although... she didn't think magic existed before, either. Hm. She tried to push the thought from her mind, and focus on her current task instead.

As she made her way to her garden, she glanced back over her shoulder at Michael, her king of the evergreen. She attempted to put a leash on him to make sure he didn't run off on the way there, but something about that combined with his humanoid stance made it feel... weird, and she decide to go without. To his credit, he was behaving very nicely despite the fact that they didn't know each other well at all. He seemed to be a placid creature, following behind her calmly and looking at his surroundings with a calm, neutral expression. She supposed it fit well for what was supposed to be a very kingly, noble creature. She had seen baby pictures of them though- she knew better than most what he must have looked like at some time. A tiny, ridiculous looking puff of pine needles and wood, with big, watery eyes.

As hilarious as the mental image of Michael as a baby was, he had grown into quite a fine creature. She could see why they were called Kings of the Evergreen- he wasn't too tall, but he had a regal air to him, with a literal crown of thorns and antlers. His body was a rich brown, and his pine needles made it look like he was wearing a fine fur cloak, leading up to an elegant ruff around his neck. He only had three fingers per hand, but they were as precise and dexterous as Fiera's own (another fact that made her slightly uncomfortable), and she watched as he carefully ran his fingers along fence posts and through bushes as they walked, gently sniffing at particularly fragrant herbs and blinking at beautiful flowers. His actions had a sense of intent and understanding behind them that a lot of creatures didn't possess.

Fiera had her reservations about some of the labs actions, especially in the creation of sapient critters, though she couldn't actually tell if that applied to this particular pet. Still, if there was any place where Michael belonged, it would be her garden. She had finally finished the fence that she had started a while ago, and now had a neat white picket row around the entirety of her garden. And thanks to the fact that the plots on all sides were abandoned, nobody had bothered her about the fact that she had made the fence perimeter a bit wider than it should have been, giving her a bit more space to garden at the price of stealing a bit of her neighbors' land. Whatever- it wasn't like any of them ever came out to the gardens anyway. They would never even know what she'd done, let alone protest her actions.

Finally, Fiera’s garden came into view, its freshly painted white picket fence standing in stark contrast to the dull browns and greens of the surrounding gardens. They were wild and untended, so Fiera usually had a great deal of privacy when working on her own. She had no particular plans today other than spending time with Michael, so she only brought the basic array of gardening tools with her. Still, that was probably all she needed. It was still winter so most of her plants were in stasis, and weeds were slow to grow in the frozen soil and sunless sky. She’d probably end up spending her time uprooting those weedy stragglers and preparing the rest of her garden for spring. Who knew, maybe she’d make some adjustments or expansions to it once the weather warmed up enough. She tended to have better ideas once she could feel her ears.

She undid the front latch and gently pushed open the gate, smugly revelling in the fact that it didn’t squeak at all. Fiera Ferella: installer of perfect hinges. She’d add it to her list of glamorous titles. She walked through and turned around, gesturing for Michael to enter as well. He looked at her blankly for a moment, his face shoved in some dead flowers, before getting up and walking over to her, allowing the humanish to close the gate behind him. He snuggled gently at it, and scratched at the paint. Fiera wondered if he had ever seen anything like this before. Well, he’d have time to get used to it, no matter how unattractive it looked to him now. Fiera decided to leave him to it and start work on the entrance pathway. Might as well, seeing as the pair of them didn’t have much to do otherwise.

As Michael investigated this new concept of “fence”, Fiera examines the path. It was mostly white and grey pieces of gravel, which crunched nicely under her feet, bordered by mini metal loops, like a tiny fence, to mark the path’s edges. Just beyond that were flower beds (beautifully colored in the spring and summer but dead now), and beyond THOSE were trees. Right now, the trees were skinny affairs. They were tied down to the ground to keep them standing with colorful ropes. She decorated them with little streamers to blow in the wind, but overall they did look pretty pathetic. With any luck though, someday they’d grow into huge, stately trees. She could imagine it now, their boughs stretching over the path, gently shading passers by and creating a beautiful dappled tunnel for people to go through. It would be beautiful... she just had to wait a couple decades first.

The trees hadn’t grown as much as Fiera had been hoping this year, but she did plant them rather late in the growing season. Maybe she could help them out- she was pretty sure she still had some bags of mulch lying around. Fiera hopped over the path’s edge, among the trees. She cast a quick glance back at Michael, who was stll sniffing around the fence. Yeah, he wasn’t going anywhere. She could afford to leave him alone for a minute or so. Then, she quickly darted between the trees over to her garden shed. It was surrounded by bushes, which were also still small and spindly looking. She was hoping that, like the trees, they’d someday grow into huge and thick hedges that, when combined with the other undergrowth, would hide the garden shed from prying eyes. Unless you were looking for it, of course.

The shed itself was a pretty standard affair. Metal walls, plastic roof, dull, small windows. Fiera always figured that she could afford to upgrade it later. This would do for now. She pushed open the door- which DID creak, to her dismay- and threw her bag of gardening tools in. They could stay there for now, considering that she didn’t need them at the moment. Then, she glanced around. She kept the shed well stocked which was great... except for when she needed something in particular. Thankfully, the bags of mulch were pretty large and thus easy to spot, with their plastic sheen and weird mascot drawn on the packaging. She sighed with satisfaction and grabbed one, grunting with effort as she heaved it out of the shed. Well that explained why she hadn’t mulched the trees sooner- these bags were stupidly heavy. No wonder she had done everything else first.

Still, it only took her a minute or so to drag the bags of mulch over to the trees, dogging a furrow in the ground behind her. She finally stopped a few feet away from one tree and dropped it, panting. “Ok, lets see...” She said to herself. “Small tree so like... two feet of mulch on either side? That sounds about right.” She nodded, and went to crack open the bag, when she noticed Michael. “Hey... what are you doing.” She said in the same tone of voice that she used on her rakai when she saw them chewing on something she couldn’t see. Sure enough, Michael was being equally suspicious, crouched down in an odd position with fresh dirt dug up on either side of him. Fiera immediately left her trees and mulch alone, forgetting about them entirely. She pushed forward toward a Michael, her ears pricked for any indication of what he was doing.
