“C’mon, guys...!” Riku cooed as he herded the two little pachee into the Breeding Center. He had been fortunate enough to know a seemingly professional breeder who was also an Archmage. Golly, that gal sure did had a lot he could learn from. For a rather humble fee, he was able to borrow Jack’s Female Tan Pachee and Male Common. Both of them cost a good amount of credits, he knew, as he’d seen others in Turner’s shop. He had just gotten back from a rush-order, picked up the little critters, and hurried along to where they were now. He had never interacted with Pachee before...! He figured observing them breed would be a perfect first experience. He tried picking Tari up, but she fussed and pushed his hand away with both arms. He laughed and picked Bing up instead. The tan fellow seemed a lot more mellow...he wondered if it was a general character trait or if he had just had a big lunch. Wait, Pachee eat, right? No...well, yes. Sort of? He had read that they eat with their feet. It was something he now remembered he was very eager to see for himself. “Hi there,” he said to the clerk “We’d like one room, please.”

He set Bing down on the counter in front of him for the woman to see, still holding on but letting his feet rest on the surface. He used his hand to move Bing’s little paw up and down as if he was waving. “Yes please!” he mimicked an attempt at a high-pitched Pachee voice for the creature, who...seemed to just stare off and not even notice. What large eyes they have...! Being approved for the room, he picked up the common Pachee again and gestured with his foot for the tan female, in the direction of the room number they were given. “Let’s go, guys.” he said with a smile. He was really here! He was really doing this! This was really happening! He’d never bread anything before. This would be the beginning of a strong hobby. And he would be the best! He had done his research. As much as he could find in any library and from throughly surveying a few more experienced candidates, he learned all that he could. He knew the ‘system’ and results off different actions - but he still hd many questions. Would he find them out himself for curiosity sake...? Or would he just find a most productive pattern and leave the resource-wasting adventure to the less....efficiency-inclined?

Opening the door to room number thirteen, the three of them saw a lush grassy room. The walls were soft and playful yellows, reds, and blues. There were lines, swirls, and polka dots. It was really rather cute. Riku thought to himself that the contrast between Pachee breedings and Sarane was....hilarious. He tried to imagine a Sarane being bred in that room. Surely, the drake would burn or freeze or shock - or claw - the colors and patterns off the wall before they’d do any deed worth doing. He heard a soft little gasp from beneath him as the female Pachee pushed between his legs and ran into the room, jumping into the grass and soaking her feet into the soil. Was there something special about the grass? Perhaps a sort of pachee-nip strain? Or maybe there was a phytoestrogen that was discretely sprayed into the little green bristles...? The male in his arms began to kick his legs as if he was running, with still a stoic as ever expression on his face. He saw the grass...did he not realize he wasn’t on it? Riku gently put him down before he dropped the little guy from laughing too hard.

Falling into the grass in his stupor, he closed the door behind him to give them some privacy. He thought about if leaving it open might allow some of the Stamen spores to breach into the hallway and potentially infect unsuspecting females walking to their own rooms. The thought of getting a surprisingly common offspring in a breeding between a purple and blue Pachee pair was funny to him. Letting his hands drop to his sides, be could feel how incredibly soft the grass was. “Wow...!” He said, instinctually ripping a handful out of the ground (without the roots) and pressing it up against his own soft lips. “Mmmm....” he murmured, then looking up at his plant creatures who were both staring at him oddly. “Oh, sorry. No offense.” Was this weird? Did they feel that somehow...? To his side was a little ball, about six inches in diameter with two different colors. Green and blue, in separate quarters like a traditional beachball. Seemingly rubber, he picked it up and rolled it over to his two new friends. Bing awkwardly waddled over (Was he okay? Was this how they normally walk...?) and picked it up, studying it for a second before pulling it in for a hug.

“Oh my goodness, how cute!” Riku quietly exclaimed to himself. The female was watching the male intensely, studying his behavior. Riku could tell she wanted the ball, but had let the other grab it first. Was she just being nice? Lazy......? Bing purred softly to himself and spun side to side at his hips, cradling it for a few seconds. He held it up to Tari, who was about three feet away, and she stared, giving him no confirmation. He stepped forward, seeming to ‘unhinge’ his feet first before moving them, and held out his hands again with the ball in between. He made a little sound, and the gal warmed her expression. She reached out and accepted the gift. Her ears twitched, and she threw the ball up and watched it drop in front of her. She watched to see if Bing took it while she wasn’t holding it. His pink irises disappeared a few times behind eyelids as he stared at her, then the ball, then her again. He point to it, and then looked at her again. Picking it up, she held it out to him. He took it and wagged his head side to side as a possible sign of gratitude.

Then he slapped his tail on the floor and a giant waft of his pollen flew up into the air. Riku could see little specks as well as larger bundles float around. Some of ot was so fine that it looked almost like smoke. It was a very interesting sight to behold...the way it naturally moved and twisted in the air of the yellow room. It almost could be mistaken for a form of ether, like the wings of the Malii he had owned most of his life. He studied the female’s reaction. She seemed to be interested in the male, but hadn’t finished ‘testing’ him First. He wondered if all females seemed to test their male applicants, or it it was just the ‘higher’ breeds. Perhaps it was a random personality preference? He knew he would see in time. She stood in the fog of the male Pachee’s pollen, with her Sigma closes shut and a teasing expression on her face. It almost read “You didn’t think I was that easy, did you...?” which made Riku laugh. The fire in this one was awful cute. He looked forward to having his own bundle of Pachee to get to know much better.

As the Pachee-ethereal faded, Tari wiggled her little cheek tuffs and took the ball back from the common male. She wiggled her tail in his face as she ran past him, forcing him to chase her. She tried to catch her tail as his whacked him, but his reflexes were too slow. It was adorable, like a sloth trying to catch a feather! Unhinged his feet roots again and began to run in her direction. Riku sat in the corner of the room, criss-cross, with his elbows on his knees and his chin in his hands. His grin was ear to ear as he watched them play. This was oddly fun! Was it really so enjoyable, or was it just the fresh excitement of a new hobby that got his blood going? Was it the satisfaction of research in use? He had pushed off breedable critters for so many years, thinking less of how available they were. And yet, he had seen so many one of a kind Pachee and Orbaru that were truly very impressive. He was the one who was behind on what was ‘too available’ or not. The two Pachee ran past him, pulling him out of his train of thought.

Tari turned around in the other corner of the room, finally trapped by the male who had been courting her. Had he finally won? Had he proven himself? What would happen next!? Surely he couldn’t impose his victory over her, since she had full control over that ‘third eye’ of hers... She seemed impressed, and she looked over at Riku. He sat up uncomfortably, wondering what the look was for. Did she need his permission? His help...? He stood up, putting his hands in his pockets as a nervous gesture. “Oh...” he said, pulling a berry out of his pocket. He’d almost forgot! It was a good thing that first attempt of Bing’s didn’t ‘go through’. They needed to absorb the berries first before the breeding could go through as he had planned. He reached back in and pulled the pink one gently out of his pocket. It was wrapped in a tissue as to not be destroyed.... Tari stared into the eyes of her captor, teasing and confusing him as usual. He hesitated, but then stepped to the side, allowing her to pass. Was he intimidated? Or just being polite...? Did he somehow know what she secretly wanted? Maybe he wasn’t so simple after all.

“C’mere, guys.” Riku called out, getting their attention and breaking the eye contact. The giant pink and red eyes stared at the human as he held out two berries, one in each hand. One was blue and longer. The shape was like a sort of cone that wasn’t straight. It’s texture was smooth, and its firmness felt ripe...although he didn’t exactly know if firm meant ripe with this type of fruit. He knew some fruits became limp at their peak. He held his left hand out with the blue berry for Bing to take. The browner Pachee looked back at Tari, who seemed not to hold him back, then hesitantly moved forward to examine the berry. He leaned in and sniffed it, then wagged his tail, making a few wisps of pollen shake off and fall immediately to the ground below. At the same time, he held out the other berry to the female. It was bright pink, with many different ‘compartments’ of the nutrient connected by a stringy stem. He figured the stem worked as a sort of umbilical chord for the nutrients to travel across. Tari also stepped forward and sniffed the berry. She seemed to understand, instinctually, that it was a good thing.

Both of them took the berry in their upper paws, while making eye contact with each other. They seemed to be agreeing to take them together, which was precious. Riku knew the species was a rather prolific bunch, and he wondered how ‘sacred’ this process was to them. They could do it much more often than a human, and they didn’t seem to always have specific mates or even notice familiar lineage when pairing up. He had studied that a little and gathered that the Pachee, being plants, almost relied on inbreeding in a way that mammals specifically tried to avoid it. Since many plants almost self-reproduce, it wasn’t all too unfamiliar. They were both mammal and plant. Yet they seemed very, very much more plant in many ways. How interesting. The two dropped the berries underneath them and mashed them with their feet. Riku could see the juices absorbing into the feet, drying up much faster than he’d expected. They both seemed to enjoy the...taste? He wasn’t sure how that sensation worked for them. Bing turned to Tari and reached out and held her hand. Once her eyes met his, he slapped his tail into the ground again and released his Stamen. Her Sigma winked open a few times before staying in a receiving position for a little while. Ooooh....! This was finally that big moment!
