Fiera read the letter with not a small amount of amusement. What a dumb kid. No offer of payment, clearly no clue where they were posting their pathetic cry for help. Fiera snorted just looking at the sloppy handwriting and poorly spelled words. She had come to the quest board today looking for a JOB, not to wipe some snotty kid’s nose for them. What could she do for a dumb dog, anyway? She was no vet. Now if the kid needed to make underhanded dealings with local business groups behind the others’ backs for black market funding, that she could manage. But playing holiday miracle for a sick rakai? Hardly. Fiera didn’t give the little letter another glance after that initial reading, and moved on to lettters that would hopefully make her some money already. She was coming up a little short on rent after all, after that last clothes shopping binge…

Fern snuffled around her heels, peering up at her owner from time to time. The fel rakai was a fully grown specimen, but sometimes Fiera could swear she acted like a shy little puppy. Fiera had brought her out for a walk today, but had decided to check out the quest board on the way. Might as well, Fiera needed the work and it was right there. The rakai was quite patient, but was clearly bored with all this. Fiera gave her a reassuring pat on the head, just in case. “Now let’s see… what else is there.” She skimmed a couple of flyers. ‘Ditch diggers needed ASAP for effort on southern b-’ ugh, no. Never. She’d break a nail! ‘Want to pass out flyers?’ Absolutely not. In THIS weather? ‘Be a girl lady boss! Work from home! Start with just one lump payme-’ Fiera ripped that one right off the board.

She was amazed some of this junk was even allowed on here! Who was filtering this stuff? Still, all of the jobs were either miserable, terribly paid, a scam, or all of the above. Which only left… Fiera took another look at that child’s letter, with the rakai sarane. The pup was one of the fancier breeds- a hainu? A pure? Whichever the white one was. It had a long, velvet ribbon tied around its neck, and it was sitting on a plush, perfectly clean carpet. Fiera allowed herself a reappraisal. Clearly whoever this kids’ parents were, they had some money, if not the good sense to not let their kid slap random notices on the quest board. Rich plus stupid… hm. Fiera leaned back on her heels a bit, mulling over her options. This could work out for her, if she played her cards right… or, you know, swiped some tchotchkes from the house when the owners weren’t looking.

A glance down at her rakai sarane let the plan solidify more in her mind. Not feeling well? Perhaps a playmate would cheer them up. Fern had an excellent personality after all, with other rakai sarane as well as children, to the point where it had proven difficult for Fiera to teach her any fighting moves at all. As a test, Fiera crouched down next to her pet. “Hey Fern? You wanna go play?” She said, her voice sticky sweet. On cue, Fern’s tail started wagging and she seemed to sit up a little straighter. Fiera’s mouth quirked up slightly. “You suuuure you want to go play?” She repeated, and Fern leapt to her feet. Fiera laughing, standing back up. That would do. She took another look at the address on the child’s request for help. “Then let’s go!” Fiera laughed, and walked away from the board fluidly, her plan percolating in her brain.

The walk there was pleasant enough. The weather had finally taken a turn for the worse, as if the warmth of summer and early autumn had finally given up the ghost after monumental effort. The last of autumn’s leaves had lost their color, turning from yellow to orange to their final brown, with only a few still clinging to the branches of the surrounding trees. Fiera had to wear her warmer clothes now, demolishing her lithe and attractive figure in the name of staying warm. The day that they made a fashionable puffer jacket she would be first in line, but until then she would just have to settle for looking like a bright purple potato, making swishy noises as the parts of her outfit rubbed up against each other. At least Fern seemed to be okay, with her thick fur and internal flame keeping her perfectly warm in this weather.

When she reached the address on the poster, Fiera knew that she had definitely made the right decision. The apartment in question was in a nice part of town. Not the ‘extravangantly wealthy, mansions on every block despite this being the middle of town and everything here is dripping in gold and glass’ wealthy, but the wealth that knew what it was. It didn’t feel the need to be flashy or overstated, as it was fully aware that it could buy out any detractors. The street was full of brown stone apartments, expertly maintained over their extistence. Perfectly manicured trees and creeper vines giving the road a more welcoming appearance, no doubt perfectly shaded and pleasantly smelling in the summer. RIght now though, all Fiera could smell was the harsh bite of the cold wind she was eager to get out of. She plodded up the stairs, Fern lurching after her.

Upon ringing the doorbell and hearing it echo through the hallway, Fiera almost immediately heard a thump-thump-thumping noise down the stairs, and before she could even return her hand to its place at her side (or in her pocket), the humanish could hear the sound of a bolt unlocking on the front door of the apartment. The door was flung open, and Fiera was greeted by a young mammalian girl. She resembled a feline, like a saimese cat, with a stick-thin body and seal pointed fur. Wide blue eyes peered up at her from under a mess of hair, having escaped from the ponytails on either side of her head. Then, the young critter’s face split into an ear to ear grin of tiny but sharp teeth as she practically started vibrating with excitement. “You came!” The child cried, bouncing on her heels and pumping her fists in front of her.

“Nanna, you were right! The light sent someone!” The child said, racing away and up the stairs. Fiera looked to either side. Well… that wasn’t STRICTLY an invitation by most peoples’ standards, but the kid didn’t say she COULDN’T come in… Fiera stalked into the house, holding Fern’s leash tight. She closed the door tightly, turning the lock behind her. She didn’t want any unsavories getting in, after all! She looked at the front hall around her- definitely luxurious. Plush carpets lined the real hardwood floors, with delicate wallpaper crawling up toward the ceiling, where a chandelier hung. This was just the entryway! There was even a hand painted portrait of some snooty looking mammalian hanging on the wall of the foyer. Yeah, this was going to be good, she thought with a smirk. Unless this kid’s parents called the cops on sight. Fiera was real good at booking it if that was the case, however.

From there, all she had to do was follow the sounds of an exciteable child. It wasn’t difficult, even with how much this building muffled sound. Fern followed loyally, but couldn’t seem to keep herself from sniffing everything. At first Fiera was a little concerned, but then she remembered that there was another rakai sarane in here somewhere. Of course she’d be interested- she only ever rarely got to meet a member of her species other than her siblings. She gave a gentle tug on the leash, encouraging her up the stairs. She’d meet this ‘Poppy’ soon enough. Once she reached the top of the stairs, it was a short distance from there down the hall to a warm room to her left. From there, she saw a nice, toasty scene- a fireplace blazing away, plush surroundings, a bookcase and tall chairs. And, of course, the child and her ‘nanna’.

The child was cheerily chattering to the old woman, a positively ancient looking mammalian who was busy sleeping in the chair. Despite the kid’s best efforts, the old woman didn’t seem to be close to waking up in the slightest. That didn’t slow the child down at all though, and she continued talking as if she didn’t notice. “And THEN I heard the doorbell ring-” She babbled, filling her in, before turning to Fiera as if on cue. “And there she was!” She said excitedly, holding her hands out. Fiera opened her mouth to introduce herself, or to say anything at all, but the young mammalian didn’t seem to want to let her get a word in edgewise. “So now I’m gonna bring her to Poppy and we’re gonna play and Poppy’s gonna feel all better and it’s gonna be great!” She said in one long rush, and grabbed Fiera’s hand.

Still silent, Fiera found herself being dragged out of the reading room, with only Nanna’s snores and her rakai sarane following her out. The pair tumbled further down the hall, with Fern bringing up the rear. “She’s in here!” The kid chirped, and pushed open a door labelled ‘Misty’s room’. “...You’re Misty, I’m guessing?” Fiera said, finally managing to break her silence. The kid only chuckled. “Well yeah! Didn’t the light tell you that?” Fiera bit her tongue against mentioning that the gods weren’t real, and instead managed to say “Actually, I only got Poppy’s name I’m afraid. Awfully vague, that Light.”. “Oh!” Misty said, giving no indicator that she noticed Fiera’s dry tone of voice. “That makes sense! Thank you for coming! Poppy’s been awful sad!”. Fiera looked around. The room was a classic kid’s bedroom, that was for sure. If the classic kid was richer than god, that is.

The bed was covered in the finest silks and blankets, with a star pattern. Similarly, glow in the dark stars were pasted onto the carefully painted ceiling. A globe sat on Misty’s desk, but with a starmap instead of the continents. A large yumenokei plushie took up half the bed. Everything in here was of the highest quality, but most things were edited, scribbled over, or broken in a way that made them more fitting of this specific child and her interest’s. For example, Fiera found herself glancing at a massive map on the wall, no doubt an expensive antique, but with childish labels of ‘gud starwatching’ spots scribbled onto it. “...I’d get the switch if I pulled that as a kid.” Fiera muttered under her breath, curling a lip. “What was that?” Misty said, fiddling with something under the bed. “I said you sure like the stars, huh?” She replied.

“Yeah!” Misty said, her tail lashing across the floor excitedly. “I’m gonna land on one someday! I hear they got a whole rocket into space a couple months ago! I love living here- my daddy says that the labs ‘represent the height of scientific… uh… somethin.’ I just know that means they got a lot of cool stuff though!” She said, pulling herself out from under the bed. “Here we go!” She chuckled, not letting Fiera replied. “Poppy!” Sure enough, she had dragged out from under the bed a wiggly sarane puppy, squeaking quietly as it extricated itself from the kitten’s arms. It plopped to the floor, all round shapes and high pitched voices. “Isn’t she cute! Daddy got her for me last month! She’s got wingies!” Indeed she did, with tiny bird wings flapping against her back. Fern’s tail immediately started wagging at the sight of her, her ears sticking straight up from her head.

Immediately, Fern approached the puppy, sniffing loudly. “Looks like they like each other.” Fiera said, more to herself than anything. It did seem to be the case though. Right away, Fern flattened herself to the ground to avoid scaring the pup, crawling forward on her belly. The puppy seemed interested too, galumphing over to Fern, propping her paws up on the sarane’s snout. Then Poppy barked as loudly as her tiny body could manage, and ran to the other end of the room. Fern gave another wag, and then got up and ran after her. When she reached the pup, she gently placed a paw on her head, trying multiple times before giving her the gentlest of taps. Still, it was enough to knock the hainu puppy right over. That hardly seemed to discourage it however, and soon it was up and chasing Fern again, chewing at the larger beast’s ankles.

Fiera watched them go at it like that for a while, back and forth, tumbling over each other. THe older rakai was always gentle, but wasn’t afraid to gently reprimand the pup for stepping out of line. Soon, Fern let herself be ‘defeated’, rolling onto her back and lolling her tongue out of her mouth. Misty giggled at the sight, patting Fern’s fuzzy belly as she allowed herself to be savaged by the puppy. Poppy chewed on her ear as if trying to rip it off. Not that it did anything to Fern. The sight was adorable, although… wasn’t this puppy supposed to be sick or something? That was what the poster had said, right? Fiera was sure there weren’t any ulterior motives going on here- this kid seemed as open as a book, with just as much going on in her head as a blank journal. Still, it couldn’t hurt to get more information. “So… Poppy doesn’t LOOK too sad, huh?” She said, testing the waters.
