“Huh? Yeah she is! She’s real sad!” Misty insisted, not turning to Fiera or taking her eyes off of the playing pets. “...You sure?” Fiera said. “They seem to be playing quite nicely. Why’s she sad?” Misty paused for a moment, fiddling with her tail. Fiera recognized that motion- she had done it a lot as a child herself, after a scolding. Suddenly, she very much regretted asking. “Poppy’s sad cuz.. Mommy’s in the hospital again.” Oh. Yeah, there it was. Fiera resisted the urge to groan- she didn’t want to get dragged into this. It wasn’t any of her business! As usual however, that wasn’t enough to keep Misty from talking. “Daddy said he can do his business anywhere so… he brought me and Mommy here. Said that cuz they’re all uhm… scientific, they can fix her! And then she’ll be all better and she can tell me about the stars again.”

“She was going good for a while, but she got sick after my birthday, and now she’s been in the hospital for so long. She said… she said that if Poppy got sad, then I could ask The Light she’s always telling me about to send something to help her out! I asked The Light a lot for Mommy to get better, but that’s not working… so I decided to ask for uhm. Poppy to get some help instead. Cuz Poppy’s sad and misses Mommy. And Daddy’s always working. You know?” Misty said, turning slightly toward Fiera. Crap. This was awkward. Fiera wasn’t this kid’s mother, and she sure as hell wasn’t going to act like one for her. Still, she needed to say SOMETHING- the only thing worse than an annoyingly happy kid was one that was bawling lke a brat. “...Yeah.” She said lamely. Fantastic. That’d work. A+ job, Ferella.

“Look, kid.” She started up again, trying to salvage herself from the miserable expression on the child’s face. “Sometimes… life doesn’t turn out how you want it. Uh, how Poppy wanted it. Whatever.” She glanced at the hainu rakai, still gnawing at one of Fern’s horns. “But the more you try, the more likely it is to turn out alright. Or the richer you are. Both work pretty well. And let’s be real, you guys have a lot of money.”. She said, but Misty only looked even more confused, holding her ears flat against her head. “...So like, your Dad brought you here because of that. Your mom probably has the best chance here, more than anywhere else. So just uh… keep trying, yeah? Keep asking that light. And everything’ll turn out fine.” She finished, giving what she hoped was an encouraging smile and a thumbs up. She was so bad at this.

Misty gave her a weak smile, but still seemed dejected. “...Thanks, lady. Though uh… The Light didn’t send you, did it.” “Oh gods no.” Fiera said with a barking laugh. “I just saw your poster on the quest board.” Even though the jig was up, Misty still seemed pretty happy about it. “Well, thank you for coming to help! Poppy seems a lot better now!” She said, looking over to where the puppy was now curled up against Fern, with both of them sleeping lightly. “Yeah, she sure does.” Fiera said, standing up. “You think you’ll be good too?” She asked, and Misty nodded. “I think… I think I can take it from here. Thank you, lady.” She said. Fiera nodded, and whistled at Fern. Her eye creaked open, and the rakai stretched and stood up, leaving the hainu puppy slumbering on the floor. “Come on girl, you’ve had a long day. Let’s go home.” Fiera said, gesturing over her shoulder.

Fiera trekked down the stairs, with Misty in tow, babbling something about stars or astronomy or her dad’s job or something like that. The humanish didn’t mind it as much now, not so long as she could relegate it to background noise. She even had a short conversation back, telling the girl some… fun and interesting words. As she reached the front door, she heard a rustling from upstairs. “...Misty? Is that you dear?” Called the voice of an older lady. “Yeah, Nanna! I’m just showing out the lady The Light sent!” “...The what?” Fiera heard, followed by a shuffling down the stairs. “That’s my cue to leave!” Fiera said quietly, but before she turned to leave… “By the way, when your dad gets home- make sure you tell him all of those cool new words, ok?” “Ok!” Misty giggled, waving goodbye. As Fiera walked down the street, she felt… a little warmer than when she went in. Then, the feeling shriveled up and died in her chest as she realized something, patting her pockets. “Oh come on.” She groaned. “All that effort, and I forgot to steal something!”
