Renathan wanted to bring a different pet out for a walk this go around, one that he hadn't had out before. She was a really cute creature, one that he actually liked a lot, but he had been focusing mainly on his primary three trainees for a while now so he felt that it was time to start on another critter. He needed to go out and do another quest soon, so it was a happy accident when Renathan found his morning free and lead Flaik out on a cheap lead since she was so demure out to the quest board to go check who needed what. He walks right up to the quest board, completely oblivious to the individual standing behind it at this point, though Flaik was being a little more observant than he was today. Truth was, Renathan was pretty tired. He'd been so busy lately that it was hard to catch good rest like he'd have liked... [Renathan is using Sever Bond for the entirety of this thread]

Flaik stood behind Renathan for a good moment or two, dancing on her tiny toes, and then waggled her tail a bit as she realized that there was something behind the... Whatever this was. Of course she wouldn't know what it was. However, she was a little shy, though feeling a little playful (she liked this time of year; she preferred the cold) and she wanted to figure out what was going on behind the strange structure. Flaik glanced beneath the board and caught sight of two legs; which spooked her a bit. She took a couple of steps back, but stood stark, and then moved forward a bit and glanced again. Two legs. The being didn't seem to notice her, she was very still after all, and then she moved a few steps ahead, sniffing. Then she spooked and backed up yet again. Renathan was not paying any attention to her, not really.

Renathan was trying to figure out which of the quests to take. There were quite a few that he was interested in, but the entire board was just covered in requests for help. Folks needing their holiday dinners cooked by someone that actually knows how, folks needing their decorations for the Festival of Light put up, and still yet, folks needing extra help for all sorts of family get togethers. It was something that he wasn't really used to seeing, he didn't really feel comfortable taking on anything like this, so he searched for any kind of a quest that was not related to anything with anyone's family. He already had a difficult enough time dealing with the quest last month that he had taken. He wasn't used to dealing with a whole new group of people all at once. He reaches out to pat Flaik, and his hand meets empty air.

Renathan turned to look for the critter, and noticed that she was not where he had lead her a moment before. Flaik was not normally one to run off, and that was immensely concerning. He had her on a lead, he remembers a second after panicking, and he lifts the lead to see if it would pull a bit, gently though, since he didn't want to hurt her since she was probably on the end of the lead. The lead came away freely, and Renathan could tell that she had gotten off of the lead somehow. Had to be after he had walked up to the board when she got off of the lead, she was just here right away! "Flaik?" He looked away from the board quietly, and turned to find her. "Flaik!" He called again, louder this time. Too bad she did not know her name right now!

This was why Renathan really needed to start training his other beasts that weren't Auburn. She was practically perfect, excellently behaved and trained quite well. In fact, Shy Guy should be pretty done with his training too. Renathan really needed to train at least name, come, and no to all of his creatures. Flaik should be one of the first ones that got that training, but Renathan was clearly thinking a step or two too late. He frantically looked around for a moment, unable to find her, until he saw the fluffy and silky tip of her tail. Oh thank goodness, she was still nearby! She was standing mostly behind the quest board, and Renathan wasn't sure what was behind the quest board that she would want, but he was just glad that she hadn't ran clear all the way off. "There you are, Flaik!" He said, moving forward to look behind the quest board.

Perhaps Renathan should not have come to the quest board that day. He wouldn't think this until long after the entire debacle was over, but hindsight is apparently quite clear and he certainly wasn't considering what was going to happen next when he rounded that quest board to gather Flaik back up and maybe tighten her lead a little bit since it obviously didn't work well. Renathan was about to say something softly to Flaik whenever he suddenly saw something else there with her. Flaik didn't seem scared, and she was typically very nervous for a creature, and she NEVER did well with strangers! There was a humanoid standing there, but it was like Renathan couldn't quite get his eyes to stay on the individual long enough to get a good look at what they looked like or who they were. His gaze kept slipping off of their form, and it was frustrating.

Renathan had no idea why this person, or thing was here behind the quest board. There was nothing behind the quest board, since people were not supposed to put their quest requests behind it on the back, and of course it was quite close to a wall behind it. However, it did have a space enough for a person of medium size to stand sideways, so it wasn't too shocking that someone was behind it. Renathan was more than a little creeped out. "Oh, sorry that Flaik bothered you-" He started to the strange individual, trying to play off the situation as easily as possible. "Come on Flaik, let's put this back on you..." Renathan said. If his mind, which he knew was weak to psychic influence, did not want his eyes to be able to pick up anything about this individual that was concrete, then Renathan would not fight it.

For a moment, all is well. Renathan was able to slip the lead onto Flaik without too much difficulty, though she had always been a little anxious around strangers. She didn't seem too worried about this stranger though, which made Renathan more frightened than put at ease. What kind of a person could there be that Flaik, a nervous creature, liked naturally? Renathan politely nodded to the person, "Alrighty well see you later..." And then he tried to lead the crossbreed away from the individual, but found that Flaik refused to move. In fact, Renathan hadn't really seen her at all move, even when Renathan was trying to get the lead on her. What? She was standing, so she seemed to be fine. Renathan stepped forward and put their hands on the body of the creature. "Come on Flaik, it's time to go!" He said, a little more frantically now.

Flaik was not at all convinced to move, and it didn't take long for Renathan to realize that she was entranced by something. Renathan looked up at the strange individual, trying to force his eyes to stick to his form so that he could just SEE, and finally Renathan was able to catch the barest glimpse of the individual. They were not at all normal, and Renathan was not one of those individuals that thought any different about any race of individual humanoids. No, this was something completely different. It was like they were mimicking being a humanoid, but didn't quite know how to do it yet. He squinted behind his mask, trying his hardest to get another look at them. Yeah, the face wasn't quite right. It was more like a strange impressionistic half-painting of a face, not at all anything like any real face he'd ever seen before or since.

Instead of horrifying Renathan like it probably should have, seeing this individual instead forced a bit of a nervous shiver down his spine (uncharacteristically) and then he had this cold, strong sense of what he needed to do next. This individual wanted to speak to him. Then, he would probably have Flaik released, so that he didn't have to worry about her being stuck like this. Her golden eyes were creepy, full wide open. Renathan did shudder thinking about those eyes staring unblinkingly and unseeingly into the infinite forever. Renathan hated it, it made him feel more than a little sick to his stomach. He needed to have a moment, take a moment to calm down. But he didn't feel like he had that time at all. Then, the being, the person, the thing, started to talk at Renathan. He didn't really feel like he was being talked 'to' at all, just 'at'.

A... Deal? Renathan was admittedly having a difficult time understanding what this person was trying to tell them. Did they mean deal, or was this a whole new world? Renathan was not a native common speaker, and sometimes it showed. Thankfully, his confusion would not be easily be detected by the individual thanks to his mask. Renathan has always been thankful for his mask; it was incredibly useful out here away from his homeland in fact. "Sounds like I'm gonna have to hear you out, right?" Renathan 'asked', rhetorically. He didn't think he had much of a choice here, since the individual had done something or another with his poor Flaik. Renathan frowned behind the mask as he continued to listen. The person was speaking to him as if he hadn't just spoken so he guessed that it wouldn't help really to keep blabbing at the individual and just let them talk.

Renathan couldn't help but sigh when the individual began actually half-way explaining what they wanted. They'd really dragged this out forever, and he was not pleased with it at all. This was another of those 'go find my whatever' quests and Renathan really didn't have time for it. He really had to go to work at some point, and he was planning on just going to pick up a quest slip and then plan to do it when the time came around, but he could already tell that this annoying person was not going to let him just go and pick out a real quest for the month. However, Renathan really did not like going on these 'go get my whatever thing' quests without knowing just what he was going to have to be looking for. If it weren't for the individual keeping Flaik from moving, Renathan wouldn't even bother with this quest...

However, it was quite obvious to Renathan that he was going to have to actually take this quest, no matter how vague it was, and then of course he asked. "Just lost it, huh?" It vaguely reminded him of that one individual that had gotten something lost in a sarane nest a long while back earlier on in the year, only with a lot more sleaze. Renathan did not trust this individual even remotely. The mammalian does not trust people normally, anyway. He's never been given a reason to trust every single person they met of course, there was really only one person he absolutely trusted, and that trust had been hard earned. In fact, it was not normal for people to trust people that do some kind of psychic something or another to one of your creatures to strong-arm one into doing what they wanted. Renathan was not at all happy.

Renathan had no doubt in his mind that this individual hadn't 'just lost' anything, and that he was probably trying to con Renathan into finding some kind of item to steal for him. Renathan was not at all happy about that, either. It wasn't something Renathan aligned to his own personal moral code, and no amount of payment was worth that. However, it wasn't like he could just say no and there be a good outcome to this either. It was quite obvious that whatever this person was, it was not something normal or powerless, and of course Flaik's fate was hanging in the balance as well. Renathan found himself wondering if this was even normal for the quest board; why was this allowed, anyway? Why was no one watching for this kind of thing? Renathan couldn't imagine the Quest Board Caretaker allowing anything illegal to go by beneath her nose...

So surely this wasn't so bad, even if the person lacked interpersonal skills enough that they thought that people needed to be threatened to do a simple job. "Alright, alright, I'll go and get your... Thing." Renathan said, scowling beneath the mask and being absolutely prickly all over. If this intimidated the individual, they did not at all show it. Instead, Renathan watched for a second as the strange individual snapped what was probably their fingers (what was all of this anyway? Renathan just couldn't understand it completely...) and then everything went completely dark. Renathan panicked for a moment before realizing that they were... Somewhere. Somewhere dusty actually. Like the... Mines? It couldn't be the mines, it was way too cold and not quite damp enough. But he did completely feel like he was underground. He turned, and could see Flaik standing there in the low light, looking at him curiously.
