Awaken. The command was sharp and came from a place in her mind that Leafy wasn’t entirely certain was her own. The uneasiness of the situation was starting to grow more and more familiar to her. Her instinct was that she was sliding back into old patterns of mental instability. If that happened, there wasn’t much she could do but go along for the ride. “I guess it is daytime. I might as well wake up.” She wiped the sleep from her eyes and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Next to the end of her bed, a cozy nest like construction was placed. A purple and crimson egg lay cradled inside. The egg called to her, almost like a compulsion. She stepped out of bed and carefully picked it up. Carrying an egg around could be a bit cumbersome, but Leafy felt anxious if she left it by itself for too long.

Her move to her own farm had been a recent enough ordeal. She still felt unsettled on the property, disliking the fact that she was a fair distance away from most of her pets. Of course, transporting them here would be an ordeal and she would need a lot more land before she could achieve such a thing. Despite having just woken up, she felt a great deal of fatigue within her body. She couldn’t recall any bad dreams or events that would have led to her sleeping poorly, but it was evident that she had.
“I suppose that doesn’t change the fact that I still have to wake up.”
She pushed herself out the door, feeling an odd sense of detachment from her movements. The morning light was dim, the sun was a scarcity during this time of the year. She didn’t mind the lack of sun, but the snowy weather could be a bit much.

For a moment, she contemplated whether to fix herself up some breakfast. She wasn’t particularly hungry which meant that it made more sense to get started on chores. Despite her farm being rather sizable, there wasn’t all that much that needed to be done. On the other hand, her kennel had many chores attached to it. That would be the next stop on her list. But first, there was a rather difficult Gallor that needed attending to. She’d need to prepare a few things before she made her way over to the barn that he currently resided in. She planned to bring the egg along to, something that a more reasonable person would likely take issue with. The situation was far from typical, however. Axis was to put it quite bluntly, vicious. Leafy could scarcely be around him without being snapped at or threatened. However, that all stopped when she brought the egg along with her.

In order to prepare herself properly, Leafy needed to wear clothing that kept her protected. She made her way over to the kitchen sink, washing her face in a steady stream of warm water. It was difficult to perform her normal routine while clutching onto the egg, but she felt an earth-shattering wave of panic fill her chest at even the mere thought of setting it down.
“I don’t think you’re all that good for me. But I’m sure things will improve once you hatch,” she remarked.
She finished cleaning herself, not bothering with a full shower considering she was going outside strictly to do chores. She headed back into her bedroom, frowning as she observed her closet. Her amount of clothing wasn’t the largest, but it got the job done. She picked out a pair of thick, woolen leggings and a long-sleeved shirt. She’d put a jacket overtop of everything, but that was kept by the front door.

Once she was dressed appropriately for the weather, she headed back down the stairs. Feeling a bit more awake, she grabbed her keys and coat before bounding out the door. The egg was still cradled in her arms. It had little protection, but it seemed to prefer it that way. She didn’t know all that much about the development of eggs, but this one seemed particularly abnormal. Perhaps it had something to do with the odd way she had obtained it. She understood now why there were people that were afraid of the labs. She considered herself to be braver than average, but even she had been frightened by the little she could remember of obtaining her egg.
“It’ll have all been worth it once you hatch! I can’t wait to meet you!” She held the egg up to her face, examining its colour under the dim glow of the morning sun.

The egg was unresponsive. Sometimes she could swear that it was talking to her, but whenever she actually wanted an answer, the egg was strangely quiet. Whenever the egg failed to respond, it made her feel a deep sense of loneliness. Perhaps it was sleeping? She took a deep breath, letting the negative emotions leave her. She needed to have a clear head while dealing with Axis. The Gallor seemed to have a knack for smelling fear and exploiting it.
“Well here goes nothing.”
She set the egg down on a pile of dead leaves. Immediately, a wave of sickness washed over her body. She ignored the feeling. It would be too cumbersome to carry the egg while simultaneously opening the heavy barn doors. It took her a few moments to muster up the strength needed to push the doors open. She opened them just wide enough for her to barely slip through.

She grabbed the egg before heading into the pressing darkness of the barn. She was met with silence which was uncharacteristic of Axis. Was he still sleeping? It didn’t seem like him, but she had to admit she didn’t know the Gallor all that well yet. “Good morning, Axis!” She tried to greet him cheerfully, even if she was still nervous around him. The Gallor was in a stall designed specifically to contain large, vicious beasts. The barn would be a perfect fit for some of her other creatures as well, but for now she wasn’t yet comfortable with bringing them around. She had bought Axis despite knowing the possibility existed for him to eat her other creatures. It wasn’t uncommon for lab created species to consume other species, but Axis didn’t have any filter for what he would consume. She would need to keep an eye on him for a long while.

She peered into Axis’s stall, getting a clear look at him. Despite his silence, it was evident that he wasn’t sleeping. He looked up at her with narrowed eyes. He differed from the common species of Gallor in a variety of ways. The most obvious difference was his canine appearance. Typically, Gallor tended to resemble birds, but the labs were always open to making unusual customized versions of the species. She’d picked up a wide variety of Gallor during her time in the labs.
“Well at least they can call your species versatile,” she muttered.
Axis seemed to be calmer today than he usually was. The presence of the egg seemed to be really doing the trick. She had a box set up outside Axis’s stall that was filled with old blankets. She placed the egg down inside while she went to get the Gallor’s food prepared. This time, the egg didn’t protest.

Axis stood up, pressing himself against the bars of his stall as he got a closer look at the egg. His eyes were fixed on the colourful shape, though he wore a look of intrigue on his face rather than his usual predatory gaze. It might be a bad idea to leave them alone, but the egg was the only thing keeping Axis at bay for the moment. Its presence was making feeding time a lot easier to deal with and she wasn’t ready to remove that source of calmness.
“I trust you to take care of yourself,” she told the egg.
It seemed a little strange talking to an egg, but Leafy had read that the creature inside should be able to hear the sound of her voice. She needed to develop a bond with this creature and this seemed like the most natural way to go about doing it.

Leafy had taken a recent trip to the butcher, allowing her to have plenty of meat on hand to feed the hungry Gallor. Thankfully, he wasn’t a picky eater, allowing her to spend less money on some of the less desirable cuts of meat. In fact, it was easier to buy an entire animal and ration it herself than it was to get the pre-cut meats. Axis seemed to prefer his prey to be as whole as possible. This had resulted in her buying an entire unknown creature for his consumption. Despite the creature being dead, it was difficult to identify. It looked similar to a cow, making her suspect it to be Murp in origin. Its head had been removed, the only thing that had been. She’d heard that brains could fetch a high price on the black market. She’d already portioned out this morning’s meal for Axis. It was simply a matter of transportation now.
