Adventure #4b - Tiny Dino and the Big Beach
Indoors at the beach. Oh how the concept twisted his mind. He needed to remind himself every so often to not think too hard about the magics of this place. This puzzle was one not inviting itself to be solved. It was to be attempted and enjoyed despite the impossibility. Better to think of enjoying his day indoors at the beach with his little dinosaur friend. Zhyre was busy playing in the sand, burring his face into the grains and popping up back up again when he needed to breathe. Xentus watched on, amused, though trying his best not to get tangled in his mind as he so often did. The room he ended up taking a break in was likely once a bedroom, now converted into a giant terrarium of the beach. It was complete with sand, tidepools, and a bright blue sky looming overhead. Oddly though, there was no sun.

Part of him did wish to feel the warmth of the burning orb's rays upon his fur.. Akin to the standard feline, Xentus did enjoy sunbathing and resting in warm places. Whether he had his feline blood or desert heritage to thank for that was unknown. IT couldn've easily been both. He smirked to himself as the thought passed through his mind. The sand was warm at least. He had dug his toes into the sand and sifted through the grains with his fingers, letting it slip between them freely. It almost reminded him of home. He often did miss playing on the dunes. He did not miss getting sand in his eyes, though. Which was exactly what Zhyre had now accomplished. The small creature started squealing and flailing about, eyes shut tight. Its tiny arms scrubbed against its face, but it seemed to only spread the assaulting sand around. Oh dear...

"Come Zhyre, let Xentus see", the leopard cooed as he dusted off his hands and scooted to the small creature. It didn't seem to care for his words. The poor thing was far too irritated by the sand. It flinched in surprise as the man touched its side and immediately began running off, spooked and blinded. Thankfully because it was small, it wasn't going to get very far. Plus without being able to tell where it was going, it veered from one direction to another, stumbling all the while. It not for the distressed squealing, Xentus would've sat and watched it for a moment longer just out of amusement. He didn't want the thing to suffer for too long though. He made his way after it in a few steps and scooped it up in his hands, where it squirmed and squealed and swatted at him with its tail.
"Let's get you cleaned up, yes?"

It sounded like he was murdering it. The squeals turned to high pitched shrieking as the man dipped the dinosaur into a cool tide pool. The flailing increased, making it harder to hold onto. "Zhyre! Come now, be still!", the man pleaded to the creature over the sound of water splashing. He had to tighten his grip, else the poor thing would go tumbling into the water. There was no good wat to keep his grasp firm on it while trying to wash the sand off. Between the slick scales and the persistent squirming, Xentus had a literal handful to deal with. Soon enough, he gave up and retreated with it from the water and back toward their spot in the sand. On the way, he dried the dinosaur off on his clothes and made sure to clean off its face well. Or tried to, at least. Zhyre bit down will full force on the offending thumb rubbing cloth over its face.

It barely hurt, but it still wasn't very nice. Xentus frowned and tsked. "Oi, calm down Zhyre. Trying to get you cleaned and this is what you do?", the leopard fussed gently, rubbing his thumb. If not for the thick pad on it, the little thing might've been able to draw blood. "There, off you go then" The words came as the dinosaur was released back to the sand with a quiet thump. Now freed from whatever grasped it, the creature seemed to slowly realize that its eyes no longer stung. It opened them and blinked, looking around with what seemed like surprise. Zhyre wiggled its tail and immediately picked up where it left off - playing in the very sand that assaulted him. A sight that was much to the leopard's dismay. No appreciation for his help, just back to whatever it was doing. Hadn't it learned that the sand was rough and coarse and got everywhere?

Adventure #5 - Evergrowth > Xentus, accompanied by...
Spring was beginning to find its way across the land, filling the air and senses in its wake. The temperatures fluttered between cold and mild, the rains began to fall. Plants stirred from their winter slumber to spread green growth once more. This season ran rife with the flourishing of life. As such, Xentus was particularly fond of spring and all that it had to bring. He took in a deep breath of the crisp dewy air, holding it for a moment, then let it out in a slow exhale. ‘Ah, how refreshing’, he thought to himself as he took in the morning. This would be a good day for venturing out and giving in to his ever-present wanderlust. The man’s recent days painted him as a shut-in with how little he dared to leave his property. But times changed, and they changed quickly. With or without those unwilling to keep pace. Not one to be left behind for too long, the decision was made - he’d take a newfound friend to the mansion grounds. A young nyssa, still sprouting its leaves for the season.

Eden was the name he’d decided upon. It was a fabled garden of everlasting life, growth, and creation. A paradise in which there was no foul, a place of eternal bliss. While the young sapling had yet to show any qualities of its namesake, it felt fitting all the same. Xentus imagined that once the nyssa grew to its full breadth that it would make for a fine protector of his garden. Yes, he did have the greater dragon-oak for that very job. There was nothing wrong with having two grand protectors, was there? A soft snort escaped him as he tried to find an argument against additional protection for the precious plants and animals which resided in his garden. All the while, he made slow progress with the nyssa to the mansion proper. It was a slow and steady type of creature, hobbling along on its stubby trunk-legs and occasionally stumbling over its own roots.

Xentus didn’t mind the slow pace. It gave him more time to take in the atmosphere. And more time to reconsider this mansion visit at all. The manor was always a strange place to stumble through with its ever-changing rooms and neverending halls. Perhaps one day someone (or even himself) might find the source of madness that twisted its very foundation. That did beg the question though- has anyone ever tried? Word around the city only ever rumored that its owner opened its gates to the public for exploration. The nature of its magics and where it came from were a mystery to him. “Let us do some mystery solving, Eden”, Xentus chimed to the sapling, giving some additional purpose to their trip aside from mindlessly wandering about. The nyssa grated its wooden jaws at the man’s funny noises, seemingly trying to make some of its own such funny noises. That was enough for Xentus to take as agreement.

In addition to wanderlust and fruitless magic-searching, Xentus did have some other motive in exploring the manor. To bond with this young tree and to garner some of those hollowed magic crystals. On the former note, he was glad the knee-high plant-goblin was content hobbling after him on a leash to start with. He planned to have it be a companion of sorts in addition to being a guardian. And on the note of magic, well… He was torn between fostering more magic for himself in the form of nodes and exchanging them for a spiritual companion. There was the option of both, but that meant he’d need quite a few of those crystals and they were by no means easy to come across. If he were more diligent, he could’ve had an assortment of nodes by now. Alas, his search for magic was just about as fleeting as the magic itself.

No matter. Such strife gave him goals to achieve, and he was fairly determined to achieve them. As always, he reminded himself to take this one step at a time. Just as he did now on this walk with the nyssa. It was definitely the ‘slow and steady’ type. On this trek so far, Xentus had taken notice of the struggle it had on the sidewalk. The leash often jittered and tightened, prompting the man to look back at the sapling. Just in time to catch the sight of Eden falling forward into a small sprawled heap.
“Oh dear..”, Xentus muttered gently, turning back to help the nyssa back to its feet. Its tail thumped against the concrete in frustration as it tried to steady itself with the man’s aid. “Careful now, Eden” Despite the man’s soothing tone, the nyssa was fairly irritated. A temper tantrum of rustling leaves and tail thumps ensued.

Eden looked a little roughed up from tripping, much like a child earning scrapes from falling in a similar fashion. “There there, my poor, sweet sapling..”, Xentus cooed, trying to calm it. Looking over the nyssa to check if it was hurt, the leopard did notice something. A rock lodged itself in the sapling’s shoulder. It snapped desperately in an attempt to remove the offending stone, though to no avail. “Allow Xentus” The leopard did his best to avoid the nyssa’s jaws as it nipped toward its shoulder. It cared not for the man’s interference, it just wanted that irritating rock out of there! A few attempts were made to get a grip on the stone, and finally with swift claws, Xentus was able to free the sapling from its burden. “There, that should feel better, yes?”, Xentus said soothingly, still trying to hush the nyssa. Eden did seem to relax, if slightly. Something about its shoulder still bothered it evidently, as it seemed to rub at the area with its neck.

The rock was tossed aside, then the man leaned in once again to examine the bothersome spot. A slight gasp escaped his lips as his eyes peered into a shallow hole in the sapling’s woody skin. Yellow tinted sap oozed around the injury as if it were bleeding. While it didn’t look as gruesome as a gaping wound in an animal, it was likely analogous to one. Except, how does one treat an injury to a tree? Xentus ripped a length of fabric from the bindings around his waist and tied it around the nyssa’s shoulder. Whether or not it needed further care, he wasn’t sure. Covering it and protecting it from the elements seemed like the best thing to do, and it seemed to quell Eden’s irritation. The sapling looked to the man with what he thought was thankfulness in its eyes, but it was honestly difficult to tell what was going on in a plant-creature’s head.

From the short spot of research he did on the species, they were not a verbal creature. They instead communicated by the sound of their leaves and other bodily cues. And he still had yet to learn the nyssa’s body language. Hopefully as he spent time with little Eden, he’d come to gain such knowledge on its kind. “Ready to continue, Eden? We are almost there, Xentus promises”, the man said gently, trying to encourage the small sapling. Its leaves rustled in response, tail thumping against the pavement. Xentus hummed, trying to read it. His eyes looked between the young nyssa, trailing down its leaves, to its back, to its thumping tail, and then to the sidewalk. Something clicked. “Ah, but of course! This unnatural ground is giving you trouble, isn’t it, Eden?”, Xentus asked, realizing the plainly obvious, “Xentus apologizes, Eden, he should’ve known better. Let us continue in the grasses, we are soon to arrive”
