"Look at that, Kenru, you've gone and squished everything!" Silver laughed at the adorable way he was rolling around in the grass. Dragon oaks did get itchy around this time of year when their acorns came in. Maybe rolling on the grass like that was a way to remove the acorns and plant them in the ground. For that matter, they had never planted one themselves. They wondered what it would be like if they planted it. Would it grow a tree? A dragon oak? Something different entirely? They weren't sure, and they didn't have one to check.
"Now you're going to have to help me pull all these weeds, too. Shame, I know," they said. They weren't really expecting him to help, but it would be nice if he did. Though his arms were a little short for the job. The delicate work that weeding required wasn't well suited to a huge dragon, really. Silver laughed at the mental image of Kodakai trying to grow flowers. Knowing him, he would probably actually be really good at it, though.

Kenru rolled back onto his feet and waved his tail around, knocking some plants around in the process. Silver wasn't sure that's what they meant by asking him to help, but they couldn't argue with his results. They laughed softly to themselves and let him wander off to do whatever it was he was going to do next. It was pointless to try to keep his attention when he was being so restless. They were better off to focus on what they were doing and checking up on him later.
It was a long, slow process, especially without their secateurs. They would have to pull every out of place branch and leaf with their own claws instead. They found the process soothing, though, so they went ahead with it for a while before deciding to take a break. Their fingertips were stained green with plant matter and they had filled an entire basket full of rejected plant bits. That had to be enough for now!

It was a shame that these varieties of plants made neither good tea, nor good salad. They would have to throw them on the compost pile to eventually enrich their other plants. The cycle of life would flow on through everything in the garden, each piece enriching another until the cycle was somehow broken. As long as Silver was there to tend it, the circle would continue, but they did wonder increasingly often what would happen otherwise. The strange magical garden seemed to have a mind of its own at times, and even their carefully tended plot had unexpected surprises.
Kenru had curled up behind a nearby tree and fallen asleep. There was a bit of smoldering grass at the end of his nose where the occasional flicker of flame came out with a particularly pronounced snore. Silver shook their head and laughed again. He hadn't managed to set the whole place on fire yet, so they weren't worried about that. They did want to get home and fix their tools, though, and perhaps this was as good of a time as any, since they couldn't get any more bonding time in at that moment. "Good afternoon, sleepy head," they said softly on their way out.

There was a secret among the three them that not one of them actually knew. Silver always had their suspicions, but they had no way to confirm them. Other than their best guess based on the resemblance, they couldn't be certain of anything. For that reason, among others, they had chosen not to talk about it. Perhaps some day, if the topic was brought up, they would explain what they knew and let the others draw their own conclusions. For today, they thought it might be nice to go out to the gardens with Kabuki and Lucent to see how they took to it. The gardens always made them calm and happy, so they hoped the good atmosphere would improve everyone's relationships with one another. They were still pretty sure that Lucent hated them, though Kabuki did seem a bit more favorable since their recent adventure together. While they were bonding, Silver didn't want Quin getting in the middle of it all (or getting jealous), so they asked him to stay home with Sylvie for a while. She begrudgingly accepted the responsibility, and they cheerfully hopped off to collect their little friends. Kabuki looked excited at first, perhaps only because last time she was invited out she got to play with some magical trinkets. Her good mood turned a bit cold when she saw that Lucent was also coming along. Whatever that meant, it couldn't be good. 6[110.65, 5.2, 5.2] [Silver casts Sever Bond.]

Kabuki had brief encounters with the little shadow beast before, and from what she could remember, she wasn't fond of him. He scowled like the world owed him something. If he was so angry all the time, he should do something about it. She would tell him as much if they spoke the same language. There was also something about him that made her deeply uncomfortable, but she couldn't put her claws on it. He looked strangely familiar, especially his long ears and ghostly white face. Except for that black patch, which she could only assume he manifested out of sheer spite.
Lucent seemingly agreed to go along with Silver to the garden, but it was apparent once they got there that he didn't really care for the experience. He stood nearby looking at the ground with his hands in his pockets. Whatever he was actually thinking about was a mystery. Silver wasn't too worried about it, since they thought he might open up once there was something to do. Even if that wasn't the case, the fact that he agreed to come along in the first place was a little win for now. They had a feeling that it would take a long time for the two of them to bond. The idea that they might not ever be close hadn't yet crossed their mind.

There was something about the color of his eyes that made Kabuki wonder. Where had he come from? For that matter.. No. She didn't like to think about such things, so she tried to shut out those thoughts. There was no point in thinking about the past like that; she much preferred to focus on the present. Perhaps one day she would know the answer, but she doubted this would be that day.
Lucent had refused to be carried, so he stayed on the ground, but Kabuki required that Silver carry her to wherever it was they were going. She occasionally stole a glance Lucent's way, and smiled smugly to herself about how she had convinced someone else to do all the work for her, but he was too stubborn and proud to do the same. Life might be a lot easier for him if only he was willing to realize the value of others and what they had to offer. It wasn't a lesson she was about to teach him, though.
"Ah, can you smell that?" Silver asked, pointing their nose at the sky and closing their eyes. It was the smell of summer flowers beginning to bloom in the garden.

They loved summer time and the flowers and fruits that came with it. Silver was excited to get into the garden and see what was around. The bulk of the actual 'work' for the season had already been done, so there was a lot of room for bonding and cute teachable moments about flowers and plants. They could hardly contain their excitement.
Kabuki rather liked flowers. They were beautiful, easy to care for, and didn't expect anything.. or judge anyone. Though she might not ever realize it, she and Silver had that in common. They liked caring for something with such quick and dramatic response to their efforts, and they liked that plants (generally) had no expectations of them.
As for Lucent, he didn't really care about plants at all. Why were they all here, again? He didn't seem impressed. He didn't necessarily hate flowers or anything, but he didn't really see the point, either. Flowers were pleasant enough, but they were so fleeting. The idea of putting so much work into something that would just die really didn't catch him. It was, perhaps, just one of those things that nobody could really explain. The fact that flowers were only temporary made them that much more precious to some people. Lucent was not one of those people.

Lucent had been expecting something more when he agreed to come along. He stood there impatiently waiting for something to happen when he started to realize that this was it. They were just going to hang out with some plants or something. Last time they went to this weird magical palace, which was at least interesting.
"What do you think?" Silver asked, noticing that Lucent seemed uneasy about something. "Isn't it lovely?" They were biased, of course. It was one of their favorite places to be. Even if they didn't have much work to do, they just liked to spend time there. It was the perfect backdrop for their plans, not too busy yet interesting enough to give them something to do if they needed it.
Kabuki was curious about one of the flowers she could see, so she launched off of Silver's shoulder and used her wings to let her glide to the ground. Last time they had gone out together they had showed her how to do that, but they were still very surprised when she did it so suddenly. They were worried about her safety until she awkwardly landed on the ground then gracefully folded her wings back into place to save face.

It was that time of year again. It was time to prepare the garden for the end of winter and the start of a new cycle. Mussimander were scratching off spare mushrooms to be collected, and the mythical healing berries were falling off of the Evergreens. Silver definitely didn't want to miss that. A handful of those berries had saved their life, after all. The least they could do was spend some time with Conifer to thank her for what she had done. She had no idea what was going on, but she liked the attention anyhow. This wasn't the first time that Silver had brought Lucent out to the garden for some bonding. It was such a nice and peaceful place that made them happy, so they wanted to bring Lucent around to see if it would spark anything in him as well. Taking care of something, like a plant or a sweet little creature like Conifer, would help them to get along as well since it gave them a goal the two of them could achieve together. At least, that was Silver's plan. Whether or not Lucent was willing to go along with it was another matter entirely. He was one of the few creatures that Silver wasn't able to bond with easily, so they were trying extra hard. King of Evergreen - 1[Silver casts Sever Bond.] [114.35; 1.2, 6.3]

"See, Lucent, this is Confier. Confier, meet Lucent," Silver waved their hands toward the individuals as they said their names, the same way they would if they were introducing two people. They thought that Lucent would think it was funny, but he just continued to scowl as usual. "Al.. right then, anyway, we're going to be spending some time with Conifer today, because she grows special berries through the middle of winter and they're pretty useful to have. If we spend lots of time with her, we can hopefully catch some just as they become ripe. Otherwise, if get overripe they fall to the ground, they probably won't be good any more. Got it?"
Lucent could not be less interested in botany or weird little walking trees, so he just huffed an acknowledgement and hoped that would make Silver shut up. They talked so much, and he only really understood a little bit of it. It was infuriating and confusing, so he would rather avoid it. That's what he did: avoided things that made him feel uncomfortable or inadequate. Unfortunately for him, that was far from the last thing Silver was going to say today. He didn't know it yet, but they were planning on practising his common the whole time they were there.

Conifer was curious about this odd new friend. She sniffed the ground in front of him, her large eyes fixated on him the entire time. She wanted to know more about him, but she was also afraid. He looked pretty scary, even if he was smaller than her. Conifer didn't really like things that weren't also plants. She was always afraid that they would try to eat her, whether they were tiny or not. Without Silver there, her fears may be well placed, but they would never let anything happen to her.
"Don't worry, he's just grumpy," Silver said. Lucent didn't even dignify that with a response.
Silver squatted down to Conifer's level and ran their paw down her back to feel her odd needly fur. It was like petting a pine tree. They always liked that about her. The existence of the half-plant creatures was always fascinating to them. Conifer had a leafy tail, woody skin, but huge mammal-like eyes and a four-legged body plan common in the animal kingdom. It was truly a mystery. They supposed it might have something to do with the odd magic that permitted the place, but thinking about that stressed them out, so they decided to just enjoy it instead.

Nestled in against the leaves in her tail were the beginnings of new healing berries. If they were lucky, some of them would be ripe and ready to fall off soon. They were looking forward to it. "Hey Lucent," Silver said, waving him over. "Look at this, can you see?" they pointed to the little flashes of pink and purple in Conifer's tail. "Those are magical berries, and they're gonna be ripe soon." Lucent, as usual, didn't look that impressed. He just wasn't interested in this gardening nonsense. Though the word 'magic' did perk up his ears. He was curious about magic and the power it held, though he knew little about it.
As they were looking at Conifer's tail, an idea came to them. They could use Conifer to help with Lucent's vocabulary. Silver beamed at their own good idea, which only served to make Lucent even more uncomfortable. Whatever Silver was smiling about, he didn't like the look of it.
"Lucent! Look here, do you know what this part is called?" They pushed Conifer's tail with their hand so that it swished back and forth. The question was met with tense silence. "What is the word for this?" They asked in a different way, in case that sparked any memories.

"Okay, this is a tail, right Lucent? Tail. You have one too," they said, pointing at it. "And so do I!" They swished their tail around, sending an array of little sparkles onto the ground. "Okay you're going to have to say something, or I'm not ever going to stop," they said. "Tail. Taaaaail."
"Tail," Lucent said, so quietly that it could barely be heard. He was still shy about his language skills, and he didn't want to be heard saying things wrong, not even around Silver and the stupid tree creature.
"That's great. I'm glad you got it," they said with a nod. It was almost instinct to try to give him a treat at this point, but they didn't want to push it and make him feel insulted.
Conifer wondered why someone was playing with her tail. She turned around in a sweeping motion and looked up at Silver. What were they doing? She blinked cutely up at them, causing them to smile softly back at her. "Thank you for being such a good model," they said. They put one hand under her chin, and used the other to rub her back.
"Okay Lucent, do you know what this is, too?" they pointed to her nose, and she stretched up to make contact with their finger.
