She adjusted herself so that her dress wouldn’t crumple, then plopped down on their shoulder rather awkwardly. It was no bookshelf, but she found it suitable. It was nice to be up high without having to put in the effort to fly. Well ‘high’ from her perspective - Silver wasn’t exactly tall compared to most people..
“Alright, then,” they said. There was a newly found confidence in their voice. It was time for an adventure, and they were never as confident as they were when they were adventuring.
Silver didn’t bother to make small talk on their way to the mansion grounds. They moved through the city in a very practiced pattern, a route they could take in their sleep. Still, they slowed down whenever something Juniper might find interesting was happening. Even if they felt like they had seen everything the city had to offer, she probably hadn’t, and they respected that.

Eventually, they made their way to the gate. Silver often paused outside the gate, and contemplated why they were doing what they were doing. It was almost like a little ritual of sorts. Stop at the gate. Stare. Consider the existence of magic and it’s level of sentience. Continue on regardless. This time, however, something was different.
They simply pushed past the gate and headed inside without thinking of it twice. Did it have something to do with Juniper’s presence, or were they merely bored of the ritual? It was hard to tell, really, and even if asked, Silver was unlikely to give a straight answer to the question.
After a few years of exploring the mansion at different times, Silver was starting to get familiar with the different themes that overtook the place. They didn’t really understand why it happened, but it seemed to change about once a moon. This particular cycle was Inkantana. The time of… time. It was quite beautiful, they thought.

“Welcome,” Silver said, “to the Eccentric’s Mansion.”
They weren’t sure why people called it that, but they did. Who was the Eccentric? Was it a person? Were they still alive? Silver often wondered about the nature of the place, but for all of their exploring, they had never come any closer to unraveling the mystery. It was still as strange as it was the first time they visited. Even though it was always changing, that part of it... never changed. Strange to think about, really.
“Hmm,” Juniper said, looking around. Didn’t they say they were going on an adventure? This just looked like a creepy old building of some kind. Not really adventure worthy. She frowned a bit, and looked at Silver, expecting them to offer more information.
“Well, I know it looks boring,” they said, “but there’s more here than you’d think. It’s, ah, well I guess it’s magic…”

Had they ever said that aloud before? It felt weird to say. While they hadn’t doubted that they came to that conclusion a long time ago, had they ever explained it so plainly? It feels like they must have, but they couldn’t remember. They pushed the discomfort at the thought of forgetting to the back of their mind, and continued their explanation.
“We could explore the gardens, or go inside, and inside… well, it’s not what you might expect. It’s very unusual in there, and … stuff happens. It’s ah, it’s interesting, I promise.”
With that incredibly graceful explanation out of the way, Silver rubbed their face nervously, and quickly blurted out the next bit. “Do you want to go inside, or outside?”
They often let their companions choose the direction of the upcoming adventure. For the most part, it didn't really matter what they did first, and if they chose every time, perhaps their own bias would get in the way of some kind of novel discovery. Or perhaps they just hated being put on the spot and it was simply easier to let fate decide.

Juniper looked around for a moment, trying to decide what she wanted to do. She still wasn’t sure she understood what this was all about, but she liked the look of the crystals poking out of the grass. She pointed at one, then made a motion with her hand, asking Silver to let her touch it.
“Okay then,” they said with a nod. They kneeled down and grabbed a small crystal from out of the grass, then held it up so that she could see it.
There were crystals of many sizes, but this one was manageable. Thankfully, it wasn’t stuck to the ground or anything. Juniper reached out and touched it with her gloved hand. Something about it was very enticing to her.
“Magic,” she said quietly, mimicking the word she had heard them say just a moment before. Silver looked at the crystal, too, and nodded. It wasn’t exactly an elemental crystal, but it did feel magical with the way it faintly glowed.
Had magic made the crystal, or was the crystal made of magic?

There are few beasts who've come to find the essence of the Mansion, and all of its wonder, something worth checking out or exploring. Some smaller ones would make their ways through the vegetations, while others simply carried on their way, following their own trail. An Enileaf rubbed itself along a few feet away, minding it's own as it rubs (with a soft purr) against harder, warmer surfaces available. Farther still, a rather softly-looking pair- feathers a light fluff with every gentle breeze- picking at the available grass and bobbing along. What a peaceful scene..!

The firefly festival was a strange and beautiful time at the mansion. If they could remember in time, Silver always made it a point to spend some time there to see what was new. The chaotic nature of the event made it so they never felt like they had seen everything worth seeing. Did it constantly change, or were they just going through the rabbit warren in a different pattern each time? Whatever the case, they were getting the urge to explore again. One of their favorite parts about going on a mini adventure was that they could bring a companion with them, who they could get to know better by testing out new experiences in a… reasonably safe environment. Silver had been to the eccentric’s mansion plenty of times during their life in the city, but they still felt like there were many mysteries that were yet to be revealed. 1[141.35; 2.2]

There were many questions to be had regarding the strange old building. It was still a mystery to them. Chaotic yet consistent. The only thing that stayed the same was that something was always different. There did appear to be rules of some kind, but it would take a lifetime to figure them out. For now, at least, they could explore with the confidence that came with experience. Whatever that meant.
Despite their persistent unease about the uniquely magical place, Silver thought it was unwise to bring large, powerful creatures with them. One of the main problems being that the old house had a plethora of doors to contend with. It was also easier to keep a smaller companion close by, just in case it was necessary to do so.
For the firefly festival, they decided to convince Eddie to come with them. It wasn’t difficult to get her to agree to an adventure, so they were ready to get going in no time at all.

“Are you ready?” Silver asked idly as they approached the gate. They weren’t really asking Eddie to hear her answer, but more of a formality. Perhaps they were checking with themselves as to how they felt. For some reason, the gate that led to the mansion grounds always made them hesitate. It was as if crossing the threshold into the mansion’s magical aura was an active decision for them, and they always had to take a bit of time to psych themselves up to it.
Eddie was staring at something beyond the gate that she couldn’t quite make out. It was glowing and dancing. Probably a firefly, though she didn’t actually know what a firefly was. To her it was just a mysterious orb of light bouncing around in the distance. She wanted to see what it was, so she tugged on Silver’s shirt and pointed to it.

“What is it?” they asked, turning to look in the direction she pointed. They couldn’t see anything, as their eyes hadn’t focused on the same thing that hers had. “You may have to show me,” they said, stepping through the gate without a second thought.
The feeling of unease went away almost instantly as they began to focus on what Eddie was doing. As long as they were attentive to her concerns, they could ignore their own worries. No wonder they often brought curious creatures with them while exploring. It was nice to have something else to think about for a bit.
Eddie shrugged as she lost sight of the bouncing light. Whatever it was, it probably wasn’t important. Onto the next thing! She used her hand to shield her eyes from the sun and looked around. Was it this bright before? She couldn’t be sure, but she felt like something had changed once they walked inside. Her perception was different from Silver’s, of course, but she could feel it too, even if she wasn’t actively aware of why.

Silver took note of the way Eddie was squinting into the light and took that as a hint that they should go inside. Perhaps the weather would be different there. Not that there was any guarantee, of course. One of the strange things about the mansion was the blurring of what ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ even meant. There was no guarantee that they wouldn’t open the door and step into a replica of the deep ocean. Though that had only happened once, and never during the time of the fireflies.
“Stay close,” Silver cautioned as they approached the front door. They had her in the crook of their arm for now, but they knew that she could get excited and fly off after something with no notice at any time. Not that their warning would really do anything to combat that. She would do whatver she wanted, regardless of what they said. All they could do was try to help her.

They pushed the front door open and took a step inside. So far so good. It was warm. The first thing they noticed was the warmth, and the way the light flickered. They took a quick look around the room to find that it was absolutely full of candles. There were candles on the floor, in a chandelier, in candelabras, and floating in thin air. There were hundreds of candles in every direction, filling the entirety of the foyer in a twiting maze of fire and wax.
The multitude of candles made the light in the room flicker constantly, and it was a bit overwhelming. Eddie turned her face away into Silver’s arm so she didn’t have to look directly into the flickering. It was as if they were underwater with everything waving around so much. It made Eddie kind of nauseated, so she eventually just closed her eyes and swallowed to get rid of the feeling.

“Ah, see what, what I mean?” Silver said. Suddenly they felt justified in being cautious, even though nothing bad had actually happened. It was just a weird trick of the light. There was no actual harm being done.
They carefully stepped through the room, looking for the gaps in between the candles to get through to the other side of the room where there was another door. They were focused on the ground so that they didn’t step on anything, but they had forgotten that there were also candles in the air until one hit them on the head. It tipped over and dribbled hot wax onto their forehead.
“Aah!” Silver squeaked, jumping with their tail puffed up wide. They quickly tried to brush the wax off of their head only to find that it was cool to the touch. It wasn’t hot at all. They had expected to be burned, but once they calmed down and saw the situation for what it actually was, they noticed that there was no actual harm.

“I’m… I’m fine,” they said aloud, It sounded half like a statement and half like a question. As if they weren’t really sure, but they wanted to reassure themselves by saying it. They had been doing that a lot lately.
Eddie looked up when Silver squeaked and had a concerned look on her face. Were they hurt? Once they said they were fine, she relaxed a little bit, but she was still confused about what had happened in the first place. Now that her eyes were open, she was starting to get used to the flickering wavering light a bit, and she no longer felt quite so sick.
“Here,” she said, pointing in the direction she thought they should go. She could look out from above, and they could look out at the floor level. Between them they should be able to navigate the maze of candles all around them.
