"I know you want to do it on your own, and I won't interfere, but please, let me help you this time, okay?" Silver wasn't sure if their words were getting through to him or not. He was so stubborn and quiet that it was hard to tell what he was thinking. It wasn't like he had a cute Vulticus tail swishing around to help them understand what he was feeling, either. It was a lot harder for them to read the expressions of humanlike creatures, like Harachiu, and, well... humans.
Silver held Sanguis up at about eye level and gently adjusted his wings. They gently moved one up and down with two fingers to get Sanguis used to the motion it made. "If you use them like this, you can catch the wind and glide down safely? Do you understand?" Whether or not he understood, he saw a bug nearby and eagerly jumped off, holding his wings like he thought Silver was telling him to. He grinned, sure that he would get that firefly this time!

With his wings adjusted the way Silver suggested, Sanguis could feel the way the air hit them. It was different this time, if only he could push back on it, maybe he could... fly! He managed to pick himself up high enough to catch the bug, but then he lost altitude. He frantically fluttered his wings so that at least his descent to the ground wouldn't be as tough as it was last time. When his feet hit the ground before the rest of him, he let out a surprised smile and laughed with joy at his own success. He knew he could fly!
He looked back at Silver with mixed feelings. He didn't want to admit that they had helped him, but he also wanted to thank them for doing so. Instead of doing that, he held out the bug proudly and put on a smug smile. Silver would get the hint, maybe. Either way, he had done it, and he deserved to show off!

A loud pop in the background startled Sanguis, and he let go of the firefly. Before he realized he had done so, it had already flown off again. He hung his head in defeat. He was so proud of himself a second ago! Also what was that pop? He looked up into the sky where it seemed to come from. A small rain of sparks glittered through the sky, even though it was daytime. Was that an explosion? Cool!
"Aw, better luck next time," Silver said softly. "Do you want to try again?" they asked, hoping to distract Sanguis from what was going on overhead. The fireworks were dangerous and unpredictable. Maybe it was best that they stay outside where they were less likely to be trapped in a small room with them. Also, they could keep an eye out for any stray ones, just in case Sanguis got any silly ideas about setting some off for himself.

Silver and Sanguis continued the bug hunting and flying lessons in tandem as they made their way through the garden outside the mansion. They might not even go inside, considering how well everything was going outside. It was warm, breezy, and the perfect place to get plenty of flight practice in. They could adjust his wings and throw him from increasing heights until he totally mastered then 'falling with style' part of flying.
"Now for takeoff," Silver said. That was no doubt the hard part, but maybe now that he knew more about how his own wings worked, he could take to it without too much trouble. "Come over here, Sanguis," Silver said. They patted a fallen tree trunk with their palm. It would be a good place for him to get a little hop in before takeoff, just in case he needed it. As much as Sanguis resented being told what to do, he had come to trust Silver's judgement in the ways of flight. How did someone with no wings know so much about how to fly?

While he was willing to take Silver's flight advice, Sanguis wasn't too excited about being carried around. He took extra effort to pull himself onto the log my himself, without any help. Silver waited quietly and patiently for him to finish. They had quickly learned when they should step aside and let him try things for himself. Otherwise they would argue and get nothing done at all.
"Taking off is hard, you have to really beat your wings to get the power you need to remove you from the ground. It's like... like a jump, but instead of your legs, you use your wings!" They still had no idea how much of what they said actually got through to him. Just in case, they wandered over and flexed his wings. They pushed and pulled his wings with both hands at the same time to simulate the movement needed for flying. Combined with instinct (and a long afternoon of gliding lessons behind them), that should be enough to get him off the ground.

Sanguis swatted Silver away as if he was saying 'yea, yea, I got it!'. Silver took a step back and watched to see if he really did have it. He took a determined breath and jumped off the log. He fell toward the ground briefly, but then started coming back up before his feet touched the ground.
"Great, now you just..." but it was too late. Sanguis had forgotten the first lesson in his eagerness to get to the second one. He tumbled to the ground, grumpy but unhurt. He thumped the ground with his fist and without a second of delay ran back to the log. He climbed up and tried again, and again, and again until he got it right. He was absolutely exhausted in every way, but he couldn't let this defeat him. Finally, after too many attempts, he took off, carried himself up, and made it all the way to Silver's head. He plopped down on top of their head and folded one leg over the other. He smirked and sat up tall like a king on his throne. He had done it!
It was exhausting just watching everything, so Silver had to imagine that Sanguis was on the last of his energy by now. They were happy to give him a ride home - he earned it! They decided not to say anything, and to let him keep some of the bugs they would inevitably catch on the way home.

There was an odd feeling in the air, more so than usual around here. It was the feeling of being watched. Silver's sense for when something was hunting them was pretty good, so they were at high alert. They didn't want to upset Sanguis after his great victory flight, though, so they tried to play it off like it was nothing.
That is, until they saw the piercing gold eyes of a catterfly. It was a rare creature that they had only heard of before but had never seen. It looked so soft, so cute, yet regal. They wanted to stare at its amber wings forever. "Ah, hey," they said very softly, finally cluing Sanguis in to what was happening. Silver squatted down so that they were more on the creature's level, and let their hands fall down between their knees so that they hung there non threateningly. "Do you want to come play, kitty kitty? Do you want a scratch?" They spoke slowly and deliberately using a mild tone as not to upset the creature before they had a chance to get a closer look at it.

Tilting it's head, the Caterfly meowed a little as it stared at the person and their Harachiu. It was interesting, seeing someone up close, but it wasn't sure what to do right now. Taking a small step forward, it sniffed in the direction of the person and tilted it's head the other way, hoping that things wouldn't blow up in it's face right now. Another step closer, it was intrigued by the sound, at least.

Silver glared sternly at Sanguis, silently suggesting that he should not interfere. The Harachiu was far too tired to really cause any mayhem anyway, so he just yawned and stayed put. He'd have plenty of time to chase cats around later. Boy was he an expert at it.
"That's right, I'll give you some scratches if you come over," they said in that same gentle tone. They wondered if they could get some treats for the creature without scaring it away. They slowly reached into the bag at their side while keeping their other hand low and in scratching position in case it wanted to come over and check it out. It felt like a long time to be fiddling around with their stuff, but it was probably only a few seconds in real time.
Finally, they managed to get their paw around something that felt useful. It was a little bag of jerky treats with a few pieces left. They pulled one out and tossed it on the ground between themselves and the catterfly. "Treat?"

Hmm, food? The caterfly tilted it's head and sniffed the air when the treat was offered. Slowly, gingerly, stepping forward, it sniffed some more and then lapped the treat into it's mouth and carefully chewed before perking up. That was good! Meowing again, it started to creep forward a little to see if there were any more.

Oh, good! The creature did eat jerky. For all they knew, it only ate... fireworks or something. That was the kind of weird thing that made sense around here. Nonetheless, most of the creatures they had seen here were relatively normal, if 'relatively' was compared to the standards of the city. Whatever the case may be, they wanted to get closer to it, maybe give it some scratches and head rubs. That seemed nice.
Sanguis rolled his eyes as they leaned forward and clicked their tongue. When would they be done so he could show off his new flying skills to his mates back home? "Kitty kitty," they said softly. "Are you going to come over for some pats, maybe? I can give you more treats." They pulled another treat from the bag at their side and tossed it on the ground, closer to them than last time. Hopefully the catterfly would wander over to eat it and they could prove how amazing head pats were.

Well... it didn't have much to lose at this point, and the caterfly leaned forward to sniff at the person's fingertips. Evidently it liked what it smelled, because it rubbed it's head up against their hand and purred loosely, wings fluttering a little on it's back. It could learn to like this person, if they gave it more food.

Silver couldn't resist letting out a smile when they felt the creature's fur for the first time. It was every bit as soft as they had expected. What a cute, sweet little thing. They really hoped that it might want to come home with them. They would give it a good life with lots of food and pats and maybe even some really strange flight training, if today's activities were any indication. Sanguis yawned loudly as if to tell them to hurry up, and Silver shot him a glare.
"There you go, I got one little bit left," they said dropping another treat on the ground. Even if it didn't want to come home with them, they wanted a better look at its beautiful wings and markings. It was uniquely beautiful, even if it was more or less just a cat. They wanted to know how its wings worked and if it could do anything interesting, like breathe fire or something. It seemed like anything was possible around here.

Leaning on the person and purring, the caterfly seemed rather excited to be with them for the moment, and possibly for much longer as well! It purred deeper and rubbed harder up against the person's legs and hand as it ate the treat and then licked their hand as well. Yes, this would work.
