Ashe opened his mouth to say something, then closed it before he could. He felt a plummeting feeling in his gut, like he'd been dropped from the back of a Sarane at quite a height and wasn't sure how he'd make it to the ground and retain his human shape. It was bad enough, the stuff he was going through with Obs forgetting him and Nox being gone and now Silver was back but with some sort of confusion? Was it a spell? Or was he just so mad that he poker faced his way through this? Ashe sort of hoped it was a spell, they could get rid of a spell with some research surely, but he was willing to accept the latter because he deserved it... Maybe one day the facade would falter and they could get past it. Right now, Silver's face was telling him he didn't know Ashe... Was anyone that good?
But first, before his mind raced ahead any further... to actually find out the real reason behind this.
"Alright, uh... What is the last thing you remember?" Ashe asked. The first question to pop into his head. If he could see what Silv could remember, then maybe he could figure out if Silv manually shut out memories, or if a concussion happened. Or if he was deep in a swamp and found a terrible witch on an adventure... "You remember Zii? Do you remember Maverick at all? Are Gen and Kumoya with you? Sylvie?"
Ashe had the common sense enough to end it there. Bombarding Silver with questions and names wouldn't get them far, and he may have already overdone it.

Silver flinched like they expected Ashe to lash out at them or something. Then they slowly relaxed when it was clear that he wasn't angry. Instead, he looked kind of sad. Which could be expected, of course. Who wouldn't be sad if a close friend forgot them and then came back acting all weird? They weren't sure what to say so they allowed the silence to hang in the air until Ashe finally said something as well.
What was the last thing they remember? Well that wasn't as easy to answer as it seemed. They assumed they meant 'about what happened' and not 'what you at for breakfast' though the latter was still fuzzy, too. They weren't sure if they could tell this relative stranger everything about their life until they heard those names. Those names they did know, and if this guy knew them, then he must be trustworthy, right? It was the only thing they had to go on.
"Zii... yea, she's always been here, right? I think. I think she saved me. Maverick... that's this guy, right?" Silver pointed in the direction he had last been, even if he wasn't still standing there Silver wouldn't have noticed. "I feel like I should know him, but I... don't. I feel... the same way about you."
A long and pointed pause predated the next statement. "The others are at home. They are resting. They were... hurt."

Hurt?
That wasn't what Ashe was expecting to hear. If they had been hurt, then something had happened - maybe it was that, moreso than Silver being mad enough to 'forget' Ashe. But this was, of course, the worse option of the two. Ashe didn't want any of them, his family, hurt... "What happened?" Ashe asked, making a move to step forward. The automatic response to something like this was to comfort, to touch, to reach out. But he stopped himself, because Silv didn't seem to be taking comfort or reassurance at his presence.
'I feel like I should know him... I feel the same way about you...'
Those words would echo through his mind for a while to come. He'd have to get to the bottom of this, it wasn't something he could just shove to the back burner and forget about.
"They're all okay, though? How badly hurt?" It didn't sound like any of them had died, or Silver would have reacted differently, surely. But he didn't want to think about Gen, Sylvie, Kumoya laying there, beaten and bloody, trying to recover...

Maybe they were mad, or more likely just sad, when they left, but that was a long time ago now. A lot had happened since then in both of their lives. Even if Silver could remember, they would still be uncertain how to feel about seeing Ashe again. It was all too much to process. Perhaps they were lucky that they couldn't remember. This could be a fresh start for the two of them, if such a thing was even possible.
What happened? Silver didn't want to remember that, but they did. At least some of it. The images haunted their nightmares and shook them to their very core. They somehow managed to get even paler when they thought about it and their eyes glazed over. They spoke in a flat tone.
"It was... there was... a lot. It all happened. Very fast. They're. Alive, but different. I had to save them. I..." They didn't say anything else. Instead they just rubbed their eyes with their palms and started to softly cry.

Ashe grew more and more concerned as Silver went through visible changes at the mental recall. Paling, the eyes glazing. Ashe watched closely to make sure his former friend wasn't going to just tip over and pass out - he would have to be there to catch Silv if that was the case. So far, so good...
Too soon. That thought came too soon. The flat voice, coming out of someone quiet but vibrant with life, that was very unlike Silv. Ashe chewed on his lip, listening, straining to hear details, but it was all very vague and he still didn't know what it was that had happened. And on top of all of that, Silver began to cry. Ashe couldn't remember ever seeing Silver cry before, even after all Ashe had done to him.
At the sight of the tears, Ashe couldn't hold himself back and he stepped forward, his intent to envelope his friend in his arms, to rub their back until they felt a little better. If Silv backed off or didn't let him, he'd stop, but right now it was instinct to try.

Silver let the warm tears slowly run down their face without any attempt to wipe them away. Zii moved to comfort them, but she backed off when they dropped their hands to their side and allowed Ashe to embrace them. Normally, they were shy about allowing others to touch them, but they were too overwhelmed to protest. Besides that, there was something about this particular person that made them feel... safe.
This was the first time since they returned to the city that they had encountered someone who knew them. It made their head spin even trying to think about it. This guy must know more about them than they knew about themselves. It was a lot to take in. Did they dare to ask questions that they were probably not ready to hear the answer to? Perhaps not. Instead, they just said in a meek little voice, "I... I'm sorry." Followed by a little sniffle.

Ashe relaxed a little when Silver allowed him to embrace them. He tightened his arms as much as he thought would be safe, before Silver would jerk away or suffocate, and moved just his hands to rub their back gently. Ashe wasn't the best at comforting people, tears made him back off usually. He was a man of action. Someone hurt a person he loved? He'd hunt that asshole down and vengeance would be swift. The trouble here was, he still didn't know what was going on with Silver. What had happened to them, what had happened to their pets. Ashe wondered if maybe something had happened to Sylvie - He'd always thought of that little fox as a part of Silver themself. But Gen was their protector. Zii seemed alright. Of course, who or what could harm a shijin, they were floating wisps.
With his mind racing still, trying to figure out the past, present, and future steps of this event, his hands kept moving. Gently pressing, rubbing, reassuring. "It's okay. It's alright now, I got you," He murmured to his oldest friend. He would hold him as long as it would take, until Silver was ready.

Silver's mind was foggy as they tried to piece together what was happening. The emotions they were feeling were arriving far ahead of the thoughts associated with them, making it confusing and overwhelming to navigate. It was nice to have a friend with them, to keep them safe and reassure them. That made them feel better, at least a little bit. Though that in and of itself was confusing as well. They had no idea who this person was, and why he was so willing to help them. It hurt to know that they lost touch with other who might care for them like this.
"Th-thanks," Silver said quietly. They brushed some tears off of their cheeks with their shirt sleeve, and looked up at Ashe with bleary eyes.
Something was bothering them. Something more than just being overwhelmed. Why were they even there? There had to be a reason why they came here, whether they knew what it was or not. Actually...
"... do you know why I'm here?" they asked.

Ashe kept a gentle back rub going, just enough to ensure contact. This might be how Ashe would comfort a woman, an instinct I his brain to make sure the woman felt secure. But he felt the same instinct with Silver, from the time they'd spent together. Even if he couldn't remember..doing this before. Silv was one of those people who seemed cuddly, but when Ashe tried to think, had they ever been cuddly as a couple? Ashe was always off doing stuff. Silv a constant presence that gave Ashe much needed security. He was trying to be that security for them now.
He couldn't meet the gaze for long. Seeing Silver cry was heartbreaking. So eventually his gaze drifted to Silver's ears, or down to their mouth.
The question caught him off guard. Ashe blinked, his eyes darting back to Silv's. Was this a trick question? The wording sounded like a typical 'do you know why I pulled you over today?' But Silv's expression and tone sounded genuine. They were hoping Ashe knew something.
"No, I don't," Ashe admitted. "I assume... whatever happened, you knew you'd be safe here. With me. You could hide. Or recover. Whatever you need. So you came here."
It was, of course, a good idea. If Silv needed to hide, Ashe would make sure they weren't found. If Silv needed to rest and heal, Ashe would get to work. If Silv needed to plot revenge when they remembered... Ashe was ready to suit up.
