I always capitalize pet species names, like Orbaru, Wiurn, Vulticus, etc. Do you? Are they proper nouns to you? Why or why not?
Bonus question: Are items with specific names like Ribbon of Telepathy proper nouns? I always capitalize those, too!

I capitalize species names as well. Tbh it's prob cause of Pokemon. I think I capitalize item names as well, but I haven't really paid attention to that.

Oh you're totally right, I probably do it because of Pokemon!
I think for item names I just do it so they stand out? But I don't think I do it on purpose.

I capitalize the species name usually. Probably because of Pokemon, I never thought about it that way before! I also usually capitalize Ribbon of Telepathy, which is silly because I don't capitalize Milk or Chicken Noodle Soup, but I often shorten it to RoT OOCly. ICly, I often refer to it as a ribbon, which doesn't get capitalized usually. That got me thinking. I don't capitalize "Dog" but dog breeds are often capitalized. I found this which gives a reason to capitalize some (named after places or people), and therefore all (because dogs are significant even if named for lowly things). As scientific creations, Labs pets would be pretty significant, and a capital letter kind of adds some weight to the word.

I always thought (as a kid) that species were capitalized due to Taxonomic Nomenclature (and I never thought about it again after that), but then again, Species names aren't normally capitalized in taxonomy. It's probably Pokemon, or maybe the way dog breeds typically are stressed, that influenced a lot of us like y'all mentioned. :3
I also capitalize them though.
