Rumi was Fanged’s latest acquisition. The Lerrel had been found causing mischief in a client’s garden. They had thought she’d been a vandal, but she was simply foraging for her own food. A Lerrel’s non-stop chatter was not ideal for all pet owners, but Fanged was growing used to it. She had done some research on gardening before she had gotten here. She hoped that it would prove to be at least somewhat helpful.
“Okay girl! Let’s get ready to do some hard work!” she told Rumi with faux confidence.
The Lerrel answered with chattering enthusiasm. Fanged had brought along some treats for Rumi as well so they could get some training done while they were here. But first, she’d need to take a look around and get the lay of the land so to speak. The gardens were a rather strange setting. From what she could see, the area she could move around in freely stretched endlessly.

Rumi flittered about on the ground, investigating the new sights and smells of the garden. Fanged didn’t actually know how much of this area fell under her ownership, but she had suspicion that she wouldn’t be able to stray into other people’s areas even if she had that intention. Did the gardens have a kind of innate magic to them? She had no clue.
“Okay first things first, I should probably plan out a perimeter for where we’ll be hanging out today. Searching for the best area to train and whatnot,” she muttered out loud to herself.
Rumi didn’t pay attention to her. Instead, the Lerrel opted to tug at a strange clump of weeds that she found. At least she had the work ethic down right. Fanged decided to leave her alone for now. There were a fair amount of fruit trees surrounding them. Fanged found herself drawn to them.

Fanged couldn’t help but feel on edge. A new area always made her cautious and spending time with a new pet was always risky. It would take them a while to figure out their footing with one another. She didn’t quite now how to handle Rumi. Lerrels were a new species to her, though she was certainly eager to learn more about them. Rumi appeared to be the busybody type. As Fanged spent more time with her, she was certain the Lerrel would do her best to help her out around the office or doing chores. Well at least as well as a Lerrel could. Fanged decided to follow her around for a bit, try and figure out what a Lerrel liked to do.
“Okay Rumi, show me what you can do!” she exclaimed with enthusiasm.
Rumi looked up at her, happy to have the attention on her. She certainly liked people.

Fanged reached down and held out a hand to Rumi. The people that Rumi had previously been with saw her as a nuisance. They hadn’t signed up for her and when she had shown up, they were not thrilled with the noise. Rumi eagerly prodded at her hand, entwining their fingers together. At least, Fanged assumed they were fingers. They stood like that for a few moments before Rumi got the urge to run off again.
Fanged took the opportunity to try her hand at some basic gardening. She didn’t quite know where to start, but she felt she could pick it up as she went along. At least she hoped she would. She felt awkward and out of her element. Rumi distracted herself by picking up flowers. Fanged hoped they weren’t anything rare that needed lots of care to grow. She drew closer so she could try and identify what they were.

She wished she had taken some identification guide books with her, but they would have been cumbersome to carry around. She crouched down and did her best to try and figure out what it was. The closest she got was thinking they were a type of weed. At least that meant that it was perfectly fine for Rumi to pick them.
“Glad that you know what you’re doing,” she told Rumi.
Rumi gave a chattering of sounds as a response. The Lerrel certainly wasn’t the quiet type. She thought she ought to try and teach Rumi her name, but she needed to find the perfect area to set up. The area around them was already good enough for training. She shrugged off her backpack that she had recently purchased from Supply and Demand. She had also gotten some treats and she had brought some of her old supplies as well with them.

“Lerrels like fruit, right?” she questioned aloud. From her backpack she pulled out a capsule of fruit treats.
“Rumi!” she called out the Lerrel’s name, trying to get her attention. The Lerrel looked up automatically, pleased to come over and investigate the objects that Fanged had pulled out. With the focus directed onto Fanged, the woman was quick to open the treat capsule and hand one over to Rumi.
“Rumi!” she repeated her name as she handed over the treat.
The Lerrel tilted her head as she observed the treat for a moment. It didn’t take her long to try eating it and to her utter delight, it tasted delightful! She let out a series of excited chattering sounds and clambered back over to Fanged to look for more food. The woman ignored her in favor of standing up and moving back over to the pile of weeds that Rumi had picked.

Rumi immediately grew distracted again. She raced over and gathered up the weeds, holding them up in her hands as though they were a prized possession. Fanged laughed at the sight and quickly grabbed her attention again by calling Rumi’s name and rattling the treat capsule.
“Rumi!” she called out in a clear voice as she continued to shake the treats.
When the Lerrel snapped to attention, Fanged was quick to reinforce the behavior by giving her a treat. Rumi accepted it happily and shoved it into her mouth. The trick disappeared before Fanged could even blink. Immediately, Rumi tried to grab for more, but she lifted the container away from the Lerrel’s grasp.
“You’ll need to finish more training first,” she remarked. She moved away from Rumi, needing to let the Lerrel get distracted again before she continued their name training. Rumi didn’t take long to bury herself in the pile of weeds.

With the Lerrel successfully distracted, Fanged called her name once again. “Rumi!”
The Lerrel revealed herself from the weeds and glanced up at Fanged eagerly. She shook the weeds off and clambered over to the woman. She beamed up at the woman and looked around eagerly for where she kept the treats. Since she responded to her name, Fanged followed up with another of the fruit capsule treats. She accepted the treat happily and gobbled it up. Fanged reached her hand over and ruffled Rumi’s fur. The Lerrel was warming up to her and basked in the attention. When Rumi had enough, she withdrew from Fanged and moved over to a new area within the garden. The Lerrel picked up a stick and began examining it. With her once again perfectly distracted, Fanged called out her name again.
“Rumi!” she called out.
Rumi raised her head and looked over at Fanged eagerly.

Fanged stepped closer to Rumi and once again rewarded her response with a fruit treat. The Lerrel chattered excitedly as she took the treat from her hand. She licked it first before shoving it in her mouth. The sight was a bit gross, but Fanged was glad she liked the treats well enough. When she was finished, Fanged decided to test her to see if she was actually learning her name.
“Waffles!” she called out the name of a popular breakfast food.
Rumi raised her head at the sound of Fanged’s voice, but she didn’t respond further and quickly moved over to a nearby patch of dandelions. Fanged took that to be successful. Now, she would see if calling her name would give her a different response.
“Rumi!”
This time the Lerrel looked up and paid close attention to her. It appeared that she certainly was getting a grasp on what her name was.

“Good girl!” Fanged rewarded her with another treat. Rumi ate quickly, pleased to have been given one. “I think you’ve mostly gotten the hang of this, but I’ll test you a bit more.”
She moved away from Rumi. The Lerrel was quick to run off on her own. When she had her back turned, Fanged called out to her.
“Rumi!”
Rumi responded immediately by turning around and meeting Fanged’s gaze. She held her gaze until Fanged looked away. This time, Fanged rewarded her with pets instead of with treats. Physical touch could help strengthen the bond between them and Rumi appeared to enjoy being pet.
“Well, I think that you’ve properly learned your name,” she remarked.
She felt confident in Rumi’s ability to learn tricks and she was eager to teach her more. But first, she did need to build up more trust with the Lerrel before they tackled anything more complicated.

Fanged decided she ought to try and get some proper work done in her garden. She looked at the supplies that were scattered around the area. It looked like there was enough to get her started with planting some seeds. That seemed like a simple enough task. She would give it a try! She glanced at the various seeds, looking for a type of plant that wouldn’t be too difficult to keep alive. Rumi immediately raced over to help with the task. She grabbed various seed packages in her hands and began to discard the ones that she deemed disinteresting. Finally, she was left with one that she carried over to Fanged quite proudly. The woman accepted the seed package gratefully. Her Lerrel taking an interest in helping was certainly a good sign. Now she would take the next step, finding the best place to plant the seeds. First, she needed to see what it was.

“Tulips. I have no clue what environment works best for tulips, so we’ll need to do a little experimenting,” she commented.
She looked around, deciding that the tulips would need a nice sunny patch that would be cool enough in the night and mornings, but receive a good dose of afternoon sun. With a plan in mind, she headed over to the ideal spot and set the seeds down. Now she needed tools. The side of her plot had a wide variety of tools she could choose from. She picked up a spade that she could use to plant the seeds. There was also an option to pick tulip bulbs and she grabbed some to plant as well in case the seeds didn’t work out. Rumi was waiting back where she had placed the seeds and watched the woman intently as she set everything she had brought over down near the seeds.

Fanged plopped down onto her knees. It would be easier to work the soil from down close to the ground. Rumi clambered onto her feet as she peered closer to watch. Fanged used her finger to dig tiny holes in the soil. She spaced the evenly apart, not wanting them to grow too closely together. She then dropped a tiny seed into each of the holes. She felt a little silly for having brought a spade over. She hadn’t needed it after all. Rumi investigated where she had planted the seeds. When she was satisfied with the result, she waited for Fanged to cover them up. The woman obliged, sweeping her hands over the soil and covering up each seed with care. When they were all filled, she patted the dirt one last time and stood up to admire her work.
“Well, I think that looks alright. Now to water them.”
