Now that she was on a higher branch, she had more access to cherries than she did before. She reached out to a few that looked particularly juicy and beamed when she managed to grab a few. Not wanting to be entirely selfish, she offered some to Rumi as well even though the Lerrel would have an easier time gathering berries than she did. Rumi eagerly accepted a few, glad not to have to put in any effort on her own part. Once they were devoured, Fanged decided to try and climb higher in the tree. She felt rather serene when she was up in the air. If she fell, the distance wasn’t high enough for her to badly damage herself. Unless of course she landed badly, but the same could be said about a fall from any height. She took a moment to just take in the view with Rumi by her side.

Fanged hadn’t tended to her garden in a little while. Her interests had been directed elsewhere. One of them being this strange kitten that had suddenly appeared in her life. The small kitten had been a bit of an enigma. At first, she had walked into Fanged’s house as though she owned the place. That had soon changed when the woman had accepted the intruder into her life and the kitten had gotten settled. After her home was secured, she was eager to drag Fanged out and about into the world. Not one to disappoint, Fanged had decided that their first outing would be to her garden. The garden was not quite as perilous as the mansion and it seemed like a good place to start out. Additionally, they could find some really interesting creatures lurking about. Rumor had it that some unusual species had been sighted around the area lately. Ingrid took to the garden rather quickly. The baby Malii swished her tails back and forth as she took in the new sights and smells of the area. The area they were in was covered in an assortment of autumn leaves. The mixture of reds, yellows, and oranges was certainly atmospheric for the fall season. Ingrid darted about. Her gaze swiftly switched between the fluttering leaves as they floated down to the ground. Picking a single target was difficult, but she soon settled on a bright red maple leaf. She darted forward with a clumsy leap upwards. Her forelegs stretched out as she aimed to grab the leaf before it could hit the ground. The Malii grasped the leaf with pride before stumbling the landing. Landing was expectedly difficult when one’s paws were full. Fanged ensured that the creature was okay before turning to look around her garden. Autumn was in full swing.

Vegetables filled the area in various stages of ripeness. Autumn was known as the harvesting season for good reason. If Fanged was particularly lucky, the additional vegetables would serve her well in her quest for finding creatures. After all, food was a good motivator for creatures to come and explore her garden plot. Ingrid didn’t seem particularly interested in any of the garden vegetables. Fanged didn’t know a lot about Malii. The strange one that had shown up was her first experience with them. It seemed natural to presume that they were strictly carnivorous. And if they weren’t, Ingrid certainly was. Fanged wasn’t one to shy away from meat either. She quickly checked on the Malii to ensure she wasn’t in any trouble before heading off to scout out the area. She had some tracking experience. All detectives should be well versed in identifying the types of tracks creatures made.

After all, food was a good motivator for creatures to come and explore her garden plot. Ingrid didn’t seem particularly interested in any of the garden vegetables. Fanged allowed her to explore with some independence. She would step in and help if actual danger appeared. For now, it was good for the Malii to gain some life experience.
“Alright, if I were a wild creature, what in this garden would be most appealing to me?” Fanged mused out loud.
Ingrid raised her head briefly to check on Fanged as she spoke. When it became clear it wasn’t anything pressing, the Malii turned her attention towards a pile of dead leaves that had collected against an old stump.

Ingrid crouched down. She kept her body low to the ground as she stalked forward carefully. She had the instincts of a predator and they guided each step she took. She wriggled her rear before pouncing forward onto the leaves. They crunched satisfyingly underneath her paws. Ingrid stood still on them for a moment, savoring her successful hunt. Fanged gazed at her fondly for a moment before investigating the area around them. She needed to start by scouting out the best areas that would attract wild creatures. Then she would need to look for signs that there were some present. First, she listened for any signs of running water. If she could find a small stream, that would certainly attract some wild critters. Once Ingrid had finished playing with the leaves, she trotted over to join Fanged on their next adventure. The woman listened intently until she decided that that she might have heard some water nearby.

The two companions headed forward with a mission. The month was new and with that, Fanged was hopeful that there were new, exciting things to be discovered. Ingrid seemed content enough to go along with her plans. The garden path stretched in front of them. Fanged decided to follow it. If there was a water to be found, she suspected this would lead her to it. Ingrid followed with light footsteps. She was adapting quickly to the garden terrain and was attention to each leaf that crunched underfoot or twig that snapped when she stepped on it. The Malii preferred stealth and would do her best to achieve it. Along the way to their chosen destination, they came across a few random fruits and mushrooms that looked interesting enough to take. Fanged quickly placed them in her bag. It was the season of harvesting and she would do her best to collect things.

Down the path, they were quick to find the source of water they were trying to locate. A small stream cut across the path. It seemed a rather odd location for a stream, but nature wasn’t one to follow the rules of people. Where it wanted water to be, water would be there. Ingrid hesitated as the stream flowed through the area they had been walking through. Fanged was not entirely sure if Ingrid resembled a cat or fox. She supposed neither was particularly inclined towards water. The woman gave the Malii an encouraging smile. She didn’t need the Malii to get her paws wet necessarily, but she did want the creature to be more comfortable around water. Fanged decided to approach the water first. If she showed Ingrid there was nothing to be afraid of, perhaps she would approach as well. She crouched down and skimmed her fingers across the surface.

The water was cool to her touch. As they approached winter, the weather would only grow colder from here on out. She removed her hand and shook water drops free from her fingertips. Now that they had found water, they would see what sorts of creatures had made their home nearby. When Fanged looked for track, she saw that there many different kinds within the vicinity. She decided to pick a pair of consistent tracks to follow. She chose a pair that looked rather feline in appearance. Tracks could be deceiving, but she thought these looked somewhat fresh. Ingrid watched with intrigue as the woman stepped around the area, trying to map out the path that their mystery creature had taken. It took her a few moments, but she had soon had decided which direction they would head in.
“Alright Ingrid, there seems to be a cluster of footprints over towards the right.”

Ingrid narrowed her eyes as she absorbed the new information. They might not have exact communication, but the Malii could see the footprint cluster for herself. Ingrid approached them and lowered her head as she sniffed at the ground. She considered for a few moments, catching the hint of a scent that was interesting and moved to follow it. Ingrid might not be trained to track, but she was certainly intent on following the scent she had discovered. The only problem with that was that Fanged wasn’t sure that she had properly caught the scent of the creature they wanted to track. However, she wanted to encourage the Malii and in order to do that, she would need to trust Ingrid on this one. The Malii twitched her ears and veered to the right of the path. Fanged decided to leave the path as well in order to follow Ingrid.

Now that Ingrid had chosen the direction they were following, Fanged was pretty sure that they were heading away from the creature Fanged had wanted to track and instead towards something else entirely. If she wanted to, they could always return to this area to follow the initial tracks. As such, Fanged could follow Ingrid without risking losing much on her end. The Malii stepped forward with confidence. She glanced back to ensure that Fanged was following her before pushing onwards. Fanged watched her for a moment with a feeling of fondness before moving quickly to follow. Even if the Malii found nothing, she was developing her skills. They moved deeper into garden terrain. Now that Ingrid was more aware of the sounds her footsteps made, she made an effort to avoid the dead leaves underfoot. Fanged was pleased that Ingrid had an inclination towards stealth. It certainly fit with her line of work.

A steady crunching of leaves announced the presence of another being nearby. Jaws clicking gently as it munches on a leaf here & and a leaf there, it steps ( surprisingly delicately) around rocks, smaller plants, and any water that winds across its path. Maybe because it moved in slow, a docile manner, or because its patterns help camouflage it with the gradual decaying state of nature all around; whichever the reason, the massive bug has almost inexplicably appeared within arms-reach, trundling slowly along its own self-determined path- incredible!
