Fanged left the Houluh Adoption agency with her new puppy cradled in her arms. The puppy was happy to snuggle and didn’t mind being carried. She started to think of names, also keeping in mind that Houluh needed show names as well. The moon on the puppies ear made Fanged think of the night sky. In turn, that made her think of dreaming.
“I think I’ll call you Dream,” she decided. “Now I’m not the best of thinking up fancy names, so we’ll choose your show name later. Sound good?”
The little puppy snuggled closer, leaning up and giving Fanged a quick lick on the chin. The woman’s heart swelled and she moved to give the puppy a scratch behind the ears. The newly anointed Dream, wagged his tail happily, tapping his tail against her arm.
“What should we do now? I want to spend some quality time with you before we go back to the kennel.”
“We could always go to the park, but I think it’s best to associate that place with training. And I want to spend some fun time together first before we have to work on training. Part of the requirements for adopting you is to train you after all,” she commented.
Perhaps taking a walk around the city would be nice. She could show Dream around and get him acquainted with the layout. There were plenty of places to go in the city where the little Houluh pup would be warmly welcomed. She could take the puppy to get some food. It was fairly close to lunch time. There were a couple of places where they could get some street food. There were also places that made sure to sell creature friendly food.
“I wonder what food is your favourite? As a canine, you should like meat, but what will you like the most?”
Fanged carried Dream down the street over towards the street vendors that she knew had the best food. If she recalled right, there was one that created homemade jerky that was specifically friendly for carnivorous creatures to eat. Dream lifted his head as they got closer, eagerly sniffing the air to trace down what the enticing smell was.
“I just know you’ll love this. Andrea makes the best jerky. She imports the animals from far away, making sure that they’re not created from lab creature meat at all!”
Fanged didn’t think she could stomach eating Galabex or the likes. She knew it would be perfectly fine meat for her creatures due to food chains and whatnot, but she didn’t feel comfortable consuming it personally. It was a bit more difficult to track down natural critter meat, but it was still possible.
“Let me introduce you two. She has a fondness for canines.”
Traversing through the city with a tiny Houluh forced Fanged to pay attention to things she might not normally. She had to pay attention to the people walking their dangerous creatures. She didn’t want little Dream to get spooked or accidentally harmed. She had taken on a motherly sense that she didn’t normally possess. Perhaps it was the added responsibility of adoption that had brought it out in her.
“Alright we should be reaching the food stand shortly. I’m excited to share this experience with you!”
Bonding with the puppy was important. Fanged was expected to teach him a bunch of tricks, but they needed to establish the baseline for a bond before she was comfortable achieving that. It didn’t take her long before she recognized the area she was in. The food stands were a little further, but she could already scent the wonderful aroma of various preserved meats.
Andrea’s stand wasn’t too far from where she was. Dream started to squirm in excitement, having already picked up on the scent of food. His tail wagged rapidly as they approached. The Houluh was clearly eager to meet new people.
“Hello there Andrea, we’d like to place an order for your specialty jerky please.”
Andrea greeted her warmly. Fanged appreciated that, having grown tired of people who didn’t quite know how to treat her odd appearance.
“Now who is this little cutie?” Andrea gushed over Fanged’s new puppy.
“This is Dream. I just got him from the adoption agency!”
The Houluh puppy squirmed in her arms to get a better view of the food stand. His eyes widened dramatically at the sight of all the different foods.
“Aren’t you a lucky fella. What can I get you both today?”
Fanged didn’t have the best knowledge of what Houluh ate, so she would play it safe and start with something simple.
“I’ll take some of your specialty jerky and a regular cut of meat. I’m not too sure what Dream prefers, so we’ll keep the order pretty basic for now. And you know I’m always open to any information you want to give me.” Dream was still intensely focused on the treats, eager to try them all.
Andrea was a source of information that Fanged had utilized before. The vendor had been the one to inform her of the ghost sightings that had been seen around town and within the mansion. That tidbit of information had eventually led to her acquisition of Casper, an ethereal Balgor she had recently tamed. If she could get another lead like that, her appetite for cases could be satisfied. She couldn’t be as open about taking cases now, but she always had a need to work. She used to be a workaholic, but that was no longer possible for her in the same sense. Perhaps filling the void by working with her creatures would help her.
“I’ll get your order ready now. Then I have a moment to chat for a bit after.”
Fanged was glad to wait. She made sure to hold Dream securely, not wanting to risk the small puppy breaking free from her arms. After this, she would take Dream to the park for training. She didn’t have any experience with Houluh, but she figured it wouldn’t be too different than training Imogen. She had to get started on the training quickly, it was part of the requirement she had to fulfil to keep Dream. She figured that if she started early enough, she could get through the requirement with plenty of time to spare.
“I’m sure you’ll be a great worker,” she told him.
The puppy leaned up and licked her cheek. He was certainly a friendly sort and Fanged wondered if his temperament would change at all as he got older.
Andrea returned with her order prepared in a paper bag. Fanged accepted the food gratefully. She held it away from Dream, not wanting him to sneak a bite.
“If you work hard today, this will be your reward,” she told him.
Andrea smiled at her and gestured for her to walk around to a more secluded area. Fanged took that as a good sign. It meant that she had information that was more sensitive. Dream was attentive as they walked to a new area, he was endlessly curious and Fanged remembered that he was very recently born.
“You know I would never pressure you to share something that could put you in danger, right?”
Fanged tended to be nicer to the sources that she liked. She wouldn’t exactly call Andrea a friend, but she didn’t want the woman to be harmed. There was at least some affection to be given there on her part.
“I wouldn’t tell you anything if I knew it would come back to bite me. I know you’re capable of keeping your mouth shut,” Andrea said to her with a sudden firmness.
The other woman leaned forward and gave Dream a quick scratch behind the ears with Fanged’s consent. Dream wagged his tail in bliss, pleased with the sudden attention. Fanged realized that Andrea was taking a moment to gather her thoughts.
“I’ve heard word that Zoological Import’s has some stock in that look very similar to your Rusty. Perhaps that’s where your little fellow originated from. It might be worth looking into. Word on the street is that he was purchased by someone though. Don’t know what happened to him after that, but it certainly wasn’t good.”
Fanged felt adrenaline spike through her veins. Having information on Rusty wasn’t something that she had expected to happen.
“Thank you for telling me. Your discretion on this topic would be much appreciated.” Fanged said with a sudden steely professionalism.
Andrea understood enough about the situation to know when to back off. It was clear from Fanged’s body language that she did not wish to discuss this topic further.
“I’ll be on my way now. Thank you for the treats! And it was a pleasure to introduce Dream to you.” Her voice rapidly changed to one of false cheeriness.
She accidentally squeezed Dream a little too tight, causing the Houluh to squeak in protest. Guilt spread through her body and she was quick to reassure the small puppy with a kiss on the top of his head.
“Sorry about that, buddy,” she murmured.
She needed to take her mind of things now. She slipped away discreetly from Andrea’s food stand, heading towards the park. If she could teach Dream some tricks, she could take her mind off of the information she had just heard. She’d head to an area that was nice and secluded, which would serve to hide her from any prying eyes.
