"Stop looking at me like that."
If Louis had the capacity to respond, or even care about what Jewel was saying to him, he would have stated that he wasn't looking at him like anything, thank you very much. He was only doing what any normal creature would do when faced with a lumbering great idiot that they were unfamiliar with. The man seemed to be of the same ilk, with his diminuitive stature and faelike features, but that was where the similarities ended. Jewel was loud, and bright, and clueless.
He didn't have a clue what he was doing with Harachiu. They were nothing like any of the other pets he had ended up saddled with; in fact, he didn't think it was appropriate to use the term at all. They were too human. Too sentient, in the way they observed him (and undoubtedly judged him for his inadequacy). Still, they brought him a modicum of comfort with their visual similarity to his race. Perhaps if they could find a way to become friends, it would work out...?
As it stood, he was at a dead end with them. They'd perched outside a cafe, and were shaded by the enormous floppy canopy drooping over the storefront - its colours had started to fade with age, along with the lettering. Jewel was feeling equally as drab. Louis stood next to the fae's iced latte with a look of pure despondency.
"Well... I don't know what to tell you," Jewel said, resting his chin on his palm. "We're at an impasse, my friend."

It was a totally normal day in which a sparkling person walked through the city with a tail swishing behind them, a tiny glowing dragon on one shoulder and an extremely tiny person on the other. What could possibly be weird about that? If that didn't strike anyone as odd, all they would have to do was keep watching. Something even weirder was bound to happen in no time. Quark idly swung his tail this way and that, occasionally slapping Eddie with it. She eventually became fed up with this nonsense and scrambled across Silver's shoulders to teach him a lesson. She grabbed his tail and pulled on his tendrils to get herself situated on his back between his wings. "Stop!" she shouted in her mightiest voice, right into the back of his head. If Faeron could wink, he would have, and he quickly took off into the air. The weight of his massive (compared to her) wings almost threw Eddie on the ground, and she clung to his neck for dear life. "Stop stop!" she yelled, more pleading than demanding this time. Silver paused their walk to look up at the two of them while they squabbled. They didn't seem the least bit concerned as they pulled higher and higher into the air. This was the sort of thing they did all the time. They imagined it might even be fun to be whisked away into the air like that once she got used to it, which was probably also what Quark was thinking. It was all going pretty well, all things considered, until Quark got a very silly idea in his head. He thought it would be fun to quickly teleport back to where he started, so he did just that. The problem was that Eddie did not teleport with him, a fact he had not yet considered... oh yea, and she couldn't fly. Eddie tumbled through the air, trying to catch the air with her wings but failing. Stupid things! Why don't they work? She screeched as loudly as she could but the wind took her breath away. Silver noticed the weight of Quark back on their shoulder, but it took a second to realize that Eddie was not there with him. A deep panic set in and their heart jumped up into their ears. They had to do something! Thinking of the magic inside them, they concentrated on a solution to their problem. If only they could fly... if only they could.... Fly! Silver sprouted two pairs of sparkly transparent blue wings in a familiar teardrop shape. They shot into the air impossibly fast and reached out their paws. A moment later, Eddie landed softly into them, annoyed but unharmed. They smiled at her and floated effortlessly back to the ground where they landed with a dainty puff of sparkles. It had ceased to be a normal day. [90.6 - 0.2, 0.2] [Silver uses the Wings of Light spell.]

Jewel took hold of his drink and took a long, pensive sip. Aah. Considering the lacklustre appearance of the place, it had managed to give him a half decent coffee. It wouldn't solve his problems, but damn if it didn't make him feel a little better.
Was he caffeine dependent? Potentially, but that was of least concern. He could worry about addiction once he'd gotten his life together. Oblivious to the hilarity of that notion, he was going to turn his attention back to Louis, but found himself... distracted.
There was a person shooting up into the air. On wings. Beneath his shirt, his own gave a sad twitch of longing - he had to pinch the inside of his wrist to distract himself from it. Was this a Fae? A Fae with the ability to fly? He felt his heart flutter at the prospect, against all odds and rationality, and sat forward in his chair, wrapped up in what was going on.
A graceful landing, too. Louis deigned to give the stranger a round of applause for the show, while Jewel sat slack-jawed and fumbling for words.
"That was impressive," He called, unable to disguise the budding smirk on his face, or the sparkle of fascination in his eyes. "Think you could teach me a few tricks?"

They could think of nothing but the safety of the little Harachiu in their paws. They helped her stand up and gently inspected her for injuries. Once she shook the confusion out of her head from the ordeal, she forcefully shoved their hands away and dusted herself off. It took her a few moments to realize that she was going to be fine. Her heart was still racing and she couldn't really figure out which way was up yet. Silver looked at her with a good deal of concern, but otherwise left her to take a breath and sort things out for herself. There was only so much they could do. Quark was not paying attention to any of it, and instead was trying to lick his own eyeball. There was glitter in it! How rude.
The sound of someone else's voice snapped Silver out of their little bubble. They were in public. All of that had happened where people could see it. They were so used to wandering around in the wilderness that they had completely forgotten that doing weird magical things in front of a ton of people was not at all a good idea. They froze and became stiff. The hair on their tail stood on end in a fruitless attempt to make them look bigger. Everything was now a threat, especially...
It was a small person, about their height, give or take. Silver blinked a few times as if they didn't understand the question. "I actually... have no idea how I did that."

Jewel had no shame in looking the stranger up and down, taking in their appearance in a visibly frank manner. Very silver. Not in an old-looking way, or a bad way, even; it suited them. It was curious, though. He didn't think he'd personally choose to stick to one colour. While he observed, he raised his coffee to take another generous sip, and swirled it in his hand as he listened.
"No idea, huh?" There was amusement evident in his tone. "Is it common in this city, for people to start flying? I've only lived here a few months, I don't know much about the locals."
He wasn't being malicious - being playful was simply his way! Jewel wasn't short of curiosity, either. He could see that the stranger had creatures with him, but couldn't make out what he was holding... could it be...?
Louis wanted a closer look. He tugged at Jewel's sleeve, then pointed over towards the person; the fae had no option but to acquiesce and allow the Haraichu to climb up onto his palm so they could walk over together. The closer he came, the more Jewel began to consider that they were of his species too. The wings, the slight stature, the sparkles? All seemed pretty fae-like to him.
"Wait, where's the wires? This is a prank, right?" He made a show of circling around them in search of a rig. "Am I hallucinating? Caffeine induced?"

Silver did not always read people very well, so they took Jewel's question at face value. They were pretty sure they had not met any people who could fly, at least not in recent memory, though they did know that many people flew on the backs of creatures. They were pretty sure that's not what he was talking about, though.
"Ah, no," they said rather stiffly. Did they explain that they found magic crystals, studied them, turned them into a magical orb, and... no that was all too complicated. "It's a rare magic, I think." That should suffice without giving up too much more info.
Eddie wanted a better look at the stranger, so she stood up in Silver's hands and tilted her head, squinting at him. She was skeptical about his intentions as he walked closer and started circling around them. When she saw that he had a Harachiu with him as well, she straightened herself out, puffed out her chest, and fluttered her wings to make herself look as tough as possible. She probably couldn't take the guy in a fight, but his Harachiu was a different story.
Quark watched Eddie carefully. He hadn't meant to send her falling to her doom, really. He honestly thought that she would have come back with him, or maybe he just didn't think about it at all. Either way he was sorry for what he did, and he did care about her.
"A prank?" Silver repeated, looking genuinely confused. Oh! Was he talking about the Faeron's shenanigans? "I actually don't think he meant it, really, just a bit excitable."

Jewel was rapidly losing grasp of what the conversation was about. A rare magic indeed, but the stranger seemed to take everything... rather literally. The fae halted in front of them once he had circled to the front once again, and looked down at Louis with thinly veined puzzlement.
Louis wasn't paying him the slightest bit of attention. He'd caught sight of the other Harachiu, and had initially been delighted, but upon seeing her posturing, he had changed his mind. Rude! Well, fine, he could behave like that too! He stomped his little feet on Jewel's palm and put his hands on his waist, his own wings fluttering. If that was how it was going to be, he was going to be the winner.
"I... think we're losing grasp of each other here," Jewel said. He looked between the peacocking Harachiu, the Faeron, and the stranger's face, and could get no read on any of them. "So let's just start over. Hi, flying dude. I'm Jewel, and this is Louis."
Louis shot the fae a disgruntled look. He needed no introduction, especially not in front of his newfound nemesis!

Silver's ability to understand people went down significantly when they were stressed. They weren't always this much of an airhead, though Jewel had no way of knowing that. Maybe if he stuck around for a bit and everything calmed down, they could actually have an adult conversation. Maybe.
Harachiu were small compared to a person, sure, but they weren't small compared to just the hands of a person. Silver struggled to hold Eddie upright with her dancing on her toes and flapping her wings. They swiftly moved her to their shoulder, and she was so surprised that she nearly tumbled to the ground, only just barely catching herself on their sleeve. Using her wings to help, she pulled herself up and sat on Silver's shoulder where she made fierce eye contact with Louis now that she was 'taller' than him.
Quark was fascinated by the other Harachiu. He knew a few, of course, but this one was new and different! Did he want a ride, too? He sat on the edge of their other shoulder (it seemed that shoulder real estate was highly prized at the moment) and stretched his long neck out all the way. It was almost as if he was saying, 'I'm not technically leaving!' while still trying to get as close to Jewel and Louis as possible. Silver used a free hand to push his face back which made him squeak grumpily but otherwise rethink whatever shenanigans he was about to get up to.
"Ah, sorry," Silver said shyly. They were quite frazzled with two feisty creatures to care for on a busy street. "I'm Silver, this is Eudora," Eddie shot them a disgruntled glance, "and the glowing one is Quark. They're ah, not so used to meeting new people, you'll have to excuse them." Now who, exactly, were they talking about there? It seemed like the same thing could apply to themselves.

Jewel made a noise of discomfort, his arm beginning to flag beneath Louis' angry tippy-tapping. He'd never seen this much spirit in him before! Usually, he was restrained to grumpy looks and insulted huffing. Taking a cue from Silver, the fae shuffled Louis up onto his shoulder, where he sat with a smug look. Ha-ha. Now they were on the same level again!
"No, no, that's fine. We kinda sprang ourselves on you," He said with an easygoing shrug, offering Silver a smile. "What kind of creature is that little guy? He's pretty cute."
Yes, he had never seen a Faeron before. There were still many species he hadn't encountered in person; he may have heard whisperings, but wouldn't know them to recognise them. They were pretty, though! Those elegant wings and markings...
Louis was also interested in the Faeron, and it was distracting him from Eddie's antics. Woah... it looked like it would make a good friend. He was jealous! Though, he would have to hide that from the other Harachiu.
"I'm sorry I flustered you. Just... that whole wings thing was kinda awesome."

Eddie settled in to her new roost and put a smug smile on her face. She deliberately looked away from Louis as if she were saying he wasn't worth paying attention to any more. She did, however, continue to glance back at him to make sure he was watching her. She was still interested in what he was doing, even if she wanted to pretend like she wasn't.
When they heard him ask about Quark, Silver's ears perked up and their face softened into a smile. There were few things in the world they liked more than talking about their amazing creatures. Faeron happened to be a favorite of theirs, as well, so they would no doubt have plenty to say. Now the only issue was - where to start?
"Quark is a Faeron," Silver explained. "Normally they have wings like a dragonfly, but he inherited his feathered ones from his mother." Silver used his fingers to gently spread out Quark's feathers, showing them off with their bright blue markings against iridescent black. "They're clever, tough, and mischievous. You definitely have to keep an eye on them."
It was interesting that this particular Faeron was the first one Jewel had ever met. His dramatic glowing markings, feathered wings, and dark color were unique and not a very good representation of the species as a whole. Though he was every bit as curious, tricky, and playful as any Faeron out there. The look in his eyes as he watched Jewel gave the impression that he was smarter than he looked. They were more like parrots than house cats in that they needed constant stimulation to keep themselves entertained.
"Oh, right," Silver said. They glanced back at their own sparkling wings, still laying against their back from the effects of the spell. "It's alright, and ah, thank you? I think."

Jewel could see the look in Quark's eyes. Indeed, quite different from what he saw from a pet like Rosie, his Chiryma - there was something more loaded there, more switched on. Cute and smart? He usually found that you would need to be one or the other, so a creature that could manage both was a source of interest for him. The mention of dragonfly wings was curious, too. They would be fitting companions to a fae.
Speaking of which, he was still puzzling over Silver. Fae, or not fae? He didn't want to place any bets. They ticked the boxes, and had the magic that even he lacked, but he wasn't willing to wager anything quite yet.
"Sounds like fun," He replied. "I like a challenge. Do you have many of them?"
Louis was watching Eddie, but was trying to be discrete about it. His attention drifted from Quark to Jewel's dangling earrings and back again, but it was peppered with furtive glances at the Haraichu. Was it a crime to want to get to know her a little? Sure, they'd already set off on the wrong foot and got shirty at each other, but the innate curiosity was getting the best of him.
Jewel wasn't disaffected by the topic either. He hadn't seen anyone aside from him with a Haraichu since he'd moved in, and felt it was too good an opportunity to learn more about them to pass up. As long as he could propose it delicately and without scaring Silver any more...
"This is kinda presumptuous of me, but do you wanna get a coffee or something? I... already have one, but," He raised the cup he was holding sheepishly. "I, um... I don't know what I'm doing with this little guy, so if you know anything that would help me..."

Whatever Silver was, it had to be interesting. If they were indeed a magical fae... where did the fox tail come from, and if they weren't, why did they have access to magical fairy wings and ... why were they so short, anyway? It was a mystery that even they barely knew the answer to, even if they wanted to explain, which they probably didn't.
"Ah, yea," Silver said, sounding sheepish. They had more then just 'a few,' actually. "They multiply pretty quickly, or at least mine do! They don't eat that much, though, so I don't mind." Even if Faeron ate a ton, they still wouldn't mind, but they hoped that the little anecdote would amuse their newly found friend.
While Eddie made an attempt to make it look like she wasn't looking at Louis, Quark put up no such charade. He carefully watched the Harachiu and his owner with his inquisitive bright blue eyes. While he may be small, he was still bigger than Eddie and that made him a little protective of her. When he wasn't busy randomly dropping her out of the sky, that was. He was a creature with many motivations, apparently.
Silver was taken aback by Jewel's request. Their ears perked up and their head tilted to one side slightly, almost like a puppy that's been asked 'Where's the ball?'. It seemed like Jewel was curious about their creatures, which was something that Silver could probably talk about forever. Therefore, they decided that they would accept the request, strange as it might be.
"Sure," they said with a little nod. "That sounds nice. If you have any questions, maybe I could answer them?" Any questions about the Harachiu, preferably, not about the magical sparkling wings or weird nature of their race, they hoped.

Woah. Jewel tried to picture what it would be like to have a couple of Faeron, and wake up a few weeks later with a whole bunch of them. The image of the little dragon-birds fluttering around the place in great numbers was amusing; it made him laugh, and he shook his head. Maybe one would be fine to start off with. He was already in a precarious situation with money without having any more mouths to feed.
"That's crazy," He said. "Not you, I mean-- you must've been surprised by that. I'm still shocked when I go in and look at the pets I'm aware I have..."
Painfully shocked, in fact. Dealing with the pastel armoured bear was the worst of it, at that moment - she hadn't accepted Jewel as a friend, and would cause a fuss whenever he came by to drop off some food. The fae was surprised he was still in possession of all his limbs.
"Great. That's great, thank you," Jewel was visibly relieved that Silver had agreed to his proposition, and started to walk towards the nearest cafe, keeping in step with his new acquaintance. "I really don't have a clue, and they deserve better, you know? I wanna do my best by them."
Louis could concur with the guy's clumsiness. Though he was only young himself and wasn't particularly aware, it didn't take much cunning to recognise when someone was out of their depth.
"So, uh... they're pretty smart, right?"

They had been around so many creatures for so long now that the thought of a dozen or more Faeron flying around didn't even strike them as strange. It was just one of those things that happened to them that they had long since accepted. Silver briefly thought about what kinds of creatures this guy might have and what they might be like. Were there just a few or many different kinds? There wasn't much time to hang on the thought, since they had to entertain a conversation as well.
"I guess you get used to it," they offered with a dismissive wave of their hand. Was everyone who lived here destined to 'get used to' a horde of crazy creatures? They weren't sure, but they didn't want to overthink it.
Quark's attention was now fixed on someone wandering out of the cafe with a pastry. He could smell the sugary sweetness of it and he visibly licked his lips, then his nose. He really wanted to take it, but he knew he had to stay put or he would really get in trouble. He let out a disgruntled little squeak which caused Eddie to finally stop staring at Louis to see what he was doing. He was clearly staring at something, so she squinted in the direction he was looking. Oh! That guy had snacks.
"Snack!" Eddie said, pointing at the person leaving the cafe.
Silver blushed like a parent who's child had just shouted a naughty word in the market. "You can have a snack if you agree to be nice," Silver muttered quickly to her. Then they turned to Jewel and said, "They really are, aren't they?"

Jewel was stopped in his tracks. They could talk...? He tried not to stare at Eddie in fear of intimidating her (though there didn't seem to be much of a concern with that!), but couldn't mask all of his shock. He'd had no idea. Why didn't Louis speak to him? The little dude frowned, huffed, and turned his back, but never once uttered a thing. Unless...
... he didn't know how. A sinking sense of both sadness and shame washed over the fae, and had him blushing up to the tips of his pointy ears.
"She's hungry, huh..." Saying anything to distract from his own embarrassment. Once they'd arrived at the door to the cafe, he pulled it open and allowed his acquaintence and their entourage to step inside first. "I think I've got a lot to learn..."
It was a homely place on the interior, but not terribly busy. Jewel practically sprinted to the counter to put in his order for a coffee - mocha frappuccino with a pastry on the side to share with Louis - and claimed a table before anything else went down. Though he'd only had his harachiu for a short period of time, and had no way of completely understanding what it was they needed to thrive, he still felt ashamed of his ignorance.
The only way to get better was to learn. Maybe Silver could help him out with that.
"Can you... can you tell me everything you know, about these guys?" Once everyone was settled, Jewel asked the question, lifting Louis down to perch on the table edge. "Anything you think would help me. Please."
