In general, Rabbit and the half breed had fallen into a schedule of sorts: in the mornings, after his breakfast, they went to the gym, and afterwards there might be a training session in which Rabbit instructed him in some matter of combat, as he had requested some time ago. Then there was the noonday meal, after which the two of them went their separate ways, Rabbit to complete her tasks around the rest of the property, and the creature to do as he liked.
Today, however, she had requested leave from Aster for the day to try something different.
"Have you ever been fishing?" said Rabbit. The creature, who had not been paying her much mind, looked at her and inclined his head. Rabbit paused a moment, then began again. "I thought we might take a break from more serious work. Studies have shown that periods of rest are often conducive to improving the quality of one's mental health."

In truth, her motivations stemmed from concern over the creature's behavior as of late. His behavior had not been problematic, but nevertheless there was a sense that something had gone amiss. He was more prone to distraction lately, and sometimes when she came to see him, she would find him in restless pacing.
And then there had been the time she had flown with the dummy, when they were working on combat training a few days ago. Since then, she had been thinking it over, and this was the best that she could come up with in that time. Their work had always been of a serious nature, at first with his rehabilitation, and then with the learning of useful skills. He had time to himself, but they did not venture off the property except to go to the gym in the city.
"If you do not wish to go, you do not have to," said Rabbit.

Of course, the very idea that she might be able to force him into anything against his will was patently absurd. She did not have the means, nor did she have the power. But in this, she did not mean to press him, or try very much to convince him if he did not like her proposal. After all, the point was for him to enjoy himself.
But the creature merely gave one of his wing flick shrugs, and walked a little ways before turning back to Rabbit. "Very well," said Rabbit, and took the lead. It seemed that they would be going on a fishing trip after all.
The walk down to the river was in fact a shorter trip than the journey they took to the city. It was a testament to just how far Aster lived from the city center... Or maybe how close he lived to the wilderness.

Or maybe both. In the end, they were likely the same thing. Aster did not often come to the river, though sometimes he would take long walks through the back woods off the boundaries of his own property.
Much of the area designated as the river was not in fact the actual river for which it was named, for it encompassed a significant delta and at least some of the run of several tributaries besides. Eventually it ended in the lake waters of the docks, though that was a long way away from where the two of them were now.
They were situated along a bend in the river where it was only beginning to spill out into the lush lowland delta, and as they crested a hill, the whole of it seemed to spill before them, an expanse of green streaked through with ribbons reflecting the pale blue of the sky.

Rabbit was a robot, and therefore not able to truly appreciating things like beauty. Nevertheless, the sight of it arrested her, and for a long moment, she stood there together with the creature, taking in the sight.
What would it look like, she wondered, if she had eyes instead of visual processors, and a mind and heart capable of emotion?
"This is beautiful," she said. It came from a place of knowing that such a thing would have inspired the reaction in a human, if not in herself, but it was still the truth.
The creature glanced at her, then turned back to the vista before them, and a little of the tension--- if it could be called that--- seemed to ebb from him as well. Or perhaps it would have been more accurate to say that he relaxed. It heartened Rabbit to see it, for this was why she had proposed the trip.

The river rolls peacefully today in these smaller inlets. It must be much deeper and broil much more out near the Canyon. A slight breeze rolls by, but the sand is wet enough to stay.

But they would accomplish nothing from where they were currently situated. There were no fish to be caught atop a hill, or at least, none that Rabbit knew of. Granted, her internal databases were generally devoted to information pertaining to the training of creatures rather than an encyclopedic catalogue of fish, but nevertheless, there was information for the care and conditions required of aquatic creatures. And fish, even small fish unrelated to lab-created creatures, did require those things, did they not?
"Come, let us descend," she said, starting off towards a barely visible dirt path in the grass, down to the water's edge. The creature did not immediately follow, but Rabbit set a leisurely pace, and at length he did drift after her, walking with an ambling sort of gait. Together the two of them made their way to a small wooden platform jutting out a little ways into the water.

It must have been built some time ago, and had very clearly fallen into a state of disrepair in the meantime. Rabbit was not surprised to see it, for the location was very much out of the way. In fact, the bigger surprise, or perhaps the bigger mystery, was why anyone had built one here in the first place.
It looked sturdy enough, but nevertheless she tested it before putting her full weight on it. Fortunately it held, and did so without any audible groaning.
The creature eyed it, and then her, and placed a considering claw on the wood.
"Do you wish to come on?" Rabbit said. "I believe I ought to get off. I am unsure as to whether it would hold both of us simultaneously." This was a less blunt way to say that the creature was much heavier than she was, and she was doubtful that the wooden platform had held up that well.
