"Do you feel it, Scarlet?" Riku asked as he shot upright in bed first thing that morning. The sun had only just risen, but so had he - and he hadn't felt that energized so early in a long time! It was an awkward stage of life for him...He was set out to be a powerful mage, and yet he felt like the last wanna-be-sorcerer in the city to still not have a node. Even a local gardener now had more magic than him. He had also been removed from the Malii Mantra, which he had called home for some time, by the city due to it apparently not being meant for humans to stay in. He had finally moved out at twenty-four...and now he was back home living with his adoptive parents again. They didn't mind! They were rather well off and wanted what was best for him. As such, they were happy to take care of him for the rest of his life.....

...But he was an adult now. He not only wanted independence like a teenager, but wanted to be independent. Meaning not relying on someone else like he had for so long. It was part of the reason he was even in this town rather than back home in his own country. He was spoiled...and it got the better of him. He had to learn the hard way to appreciate things and how to work for rewards - or even that any sort of treat was earned. Otherwise it wasn't a treat, it was just normal.
Scarlet twitched her ear at his much too early, much too energetic question. She didn't bother to open her eyes and simply grunted as an informal version of an irritated "What?". She lay beside the bed, a bit too large to share it with him - not that she hadn't tried. However, it was only a twin mattress since he wouldn't let his parents buy him a bigger one.

In a way, he was glad that he had left the Mantra. It was a bit cramped, and the staircase right at the entrance led straight to his studio apartment upstairs.....which was because it was meant to be the public upstairs of the business. And this way the building would have room for twice as many Malii to stay. Of course, there was still a lot of work to be done. The people of the city still mostly hadn't heard of the place, so they hadn't been doing enough business for him to be given the funds to hire any help. Thankfully there were a few automated systems, like alarms and water/feed stations, but he still had to show up every day to make sure the Malii were doing fine. There were few days off.
"You don't feel it, girl...?" he continued "Spring is coming!" he swung his legs out from under the covers and then stood up and ran to the bathroom to get ready.

"Where are we going?" Scarlet asked as he locked the front door behind them. She stretched out her wings and looked back at them to make sure they were feathered right. Sometimes she slept on them wrong and then would have to difficultly fix them - but they were fine.
He started walking towards the edge of the property with his friend at his side. "I figured we could either go to the gardens or the quest board today since it is so nice out. What do you think?" he asked, reaching down the slide his hand down her back as they went. Fortunately her back was above his hip, so it wasn't much of a reach at all.
She shuddered at the idea of getting dirty. "Definitely the quest board." she snarked "Maybe someone will want us to do something quick outside so you can have your fix of the sun and I can go back to sleep later."

Reaching the quest shop, they were relieved to see that no one was around the board. Neither of them were very looking forward to being social - whether that meant talking to strangers or simply avoiding eye-contact with them. Scarlet, for one, just didn't like being touched by most people..but she was so beautiful and soft that most people simply couldn't help themselves. If only they could hear her reactions that only Riku could.
"Get an easy one, please..." Scarlet insisted, with 'please' added to seem a bit softer - even though it was much more of a command than an plea. Riku knew that if he didn't 'obey' she would punish him with difficulty and complaints the entire time.
He looked over the board, walking around it a few times to see what caught his eye. Happily, there were plenty to choose from - although he wondered how many of them were simply repeats.

On the flip side, there were times when the board had only one or even no quests available. He supposed no one needing help could never really be a bad thing, though. On his second lap he finally saw that a beautiful rose decoration, an origami it seemed, that had something attached to it. Upon closer inspection, it seemed to be a packet of wildflower seeds. "Oh, this is nice." he said aloud and through the ribbon "I've been studying plants lately so I can properly grow my own potion ingredients. These can be a pleasant addition to my garden."
"What garden?" Scarlet teased, knowing he was often just as lazy as she had become in his absence. They hadn't set a part of his parent's land to till anything, and they didn't have a house of their own yet. She knew there was no garden.
"Well...the one we'll make. Eventually." he awkwardly answered.

Tugging on the packet of seeds to get it loose, he struggled a bit since it appeared to be stapled to the decoration - which was weird. Being on the board like that must have meant they were free, right? He had seem other samples or freebies set up like that before. At least....he hoped those were all free, too. Goodness, what if he was an accidental thief and would find himself on the board! He supposed if that happened it would be pretty easy quest points to catch himself. He smiled, and his Malii caught thought of what he was picturing. Amused, but not letting him know.
While trying to rip the seeds away, he accidentally pulled off the entire flower. It was about the size of his first and fit perfectly in his palm. "Wait a second..." he said, noticing some wording on the inside of one of the now-open folds.

"What is it...?" Scarlet asked, moving closer and lifting her head to get a look. He bent over slightly so that she could see while he unfolded it - which felt like blasphemy since the creation was so beautiful in its undisturbed state. "I think...it's a quest." he said. He held it out, once unfolded, and read it aloud (and through the ribbon) to her: "Nature Month! We are in need of people willing to go out and plant trees to celebrate the springtime. We will supply all of the saplings, and there will be others working at your side. Please come along- the Questing Association has offered to give out QP to those that help out the most. There will also be a prize given out to the top assistants!" "So....gardening?" the Malii sighed. She turned away, feeling betrayed by her curiosity. It seemed Riku got his wish, even though he gave her the option to choose what they'd do that day. He smiled a bit devilishly "Yeup." he teased. "Looks like we're getting down and dirty after all!" he laughed. "I don't do dirty. That's why I don't go with you to the mines." She looked around "Where do we get the trees...?""Good question..." he said, looking around the place as well. "Let's check with Jolyne."

He opened the door for his girl and allowed her to walk in first. Cringing, she stuck close to Riku. "Ew, no, Riku, what? No! Let's go. Please just no." she whined.
"Hey, be nice...I know she's got..something about her, but she won't hurt you. I'll be quick." he comforted. Reaching the counter where the woman was chewing her gum and not even acknowledging that anyone had entered (even though they weren't at all silent or graceful about it, especially with a Malii making audible noises of extreme discomfort), he greeted the Mammalian. "Hi there, Jolyne."
She looked up at his and asked "What can I help you with?" in a sort of ungrateful and not entirely genuine way. He chose not to mind - he knew how public service jobs could be.
"We were wondering if you knew where the saplings would be for this tree job?" he help up the unfolded origami.

She raised an eyebrow at him once she saw the dark pink card stock. "You're removing decorations...?" was all she said. She grabbed it out of his hand to give it a read so she would know which quest he was referring to.
He took a slight step back in shock and embarrassment. Maybe he was an accidental thief...! He chuckled nervously "I, ugh..sorry. It sorta fell off when I was-" catching himself, he didn't want to let on that he was removing seed packets as well, in case that was also not wanted. "Er, when I was trying to remove a stray staple. Y'know, sharp end sticking out and all."
"That's it, Riku. Lie to her." Scarlet approved. Goodness, what a little rebel the baby angel had grown into. She whipped her tails to one side as she forced herself to make eye contact with her fear, who's existence she did not approve of.
