It was just like old times. If there was one thing Silver could count on always being the same, it was fishing with Koda. They hadn't done it in a long time, so they were really eager to get started. The dry season was coming to a close as they entered the canyon and made their way to the usual spot. While they might not remember the way on their own, their connection with their bonded helped them to find it. With them they brought a little bronze fish they had dubbed Blinkie. It was a sweet little Seryn in a large fish bowl that was actually not that easy to carry around. Regardless, they insisted on lugging it down to the river to meet Koda. They thought that he might like to meet the little fish, and that he might enjoy getting out of the small pond where he lived. One day the fish would fly, probably, and that would be really spectacular indeed. Until then, he was just a confused little fishy in a big bowl. 1[94.15 - 0.2]

"I cannot understand why you insist on burdening yourself like this," Koda said through the telepathic connection he shared with Silver. 'Where are you?' was Silver's only reply. 'I can't see you.' He could feel that Silver was worried that they were lost, so he reassured them. "I am just around the bend, I will arrive in a moment." True to his word, Koda swam around the bend and floated gracefully out of the water on a wave of his own creation and... landed straight into the mud. The river at this time of year left a lot to be desired. He shook his claws each time they released from the mud, only to lose them again after each step. This was already delightful. When he reached dry rock, Koda flicked his mighty tail, sending a large splatter of mud into the air. Part of it hit Silver, and more still landed in their ridiculous fish bowl. "My apologies," he said.

"Ah, it's alright," Silver said while wiping the mud from their face. They knew that Koda didn't mean it; he didn't even have to say so.
As for the bowl with Blinkie in it, that was a different matter. The water quickly filled with mud, especially since the Seryn panicked a little and stirred it up. They had no choice now but to get him some fresh water or dump him into the river. Silver figured they were there to say, so they did the later. They shook off their boots, waded through the mud, and tipped the bowl into the river. Despite the muddy conditions, the water ran strangely clearly and with little current where they were. No doubt they picked this particular spot for its especially nice water quality. Koda must know every bend and dip in this entire river by now.
"This is Blinkie," Silver said. Koda probably already knew that, but it felt weird not to introduce him. He wasn't just a fish, after all. He was a Seryn!

"Blinkie," Koda repeated. That didn't sound like a very dignified name, but it also didn't look like a very dignified fish. He would reserve his judgement until the little guy grew up, though. He had known quite a few strange fish that turned into miraculous things in his time. Very rarely did Silver ever bring something out here that was 'just' a fish. It did seem a bit odd, however, to bring a fish to a fishing trip. Ah well, most fish ate other fish anyway, he doubted that it would care that much.
"Blinkie is... a Seryn?" Koda asked. He remembered another one he had met at the river previously, though it had been a long time. She must be fully grown by now! "He looks just like Lotus," he observed. "Except... more muddy." The bronzy brown color of the fish didn't stand out well against the bottom of the river like the bright blue and pink of the other one did.

"That's... that's right," Silver said with a nod. They had forgotten that Koda had met Lotus when she was little as well. Koda had a passing familiarity with many of their pets, but few of them had made their way down to the canyon to meet him. That should all change now that he had agreed to spend more time in the city. They would have to catch him up with all of their creatures, new and old. They were giddy with the idea of showing him everyone and telling him about them.
That was a mission for a different time, however. Today they were there to catch up, and to fish. Silver's paws were already muddy, so they couldn't back out of the deal now. They watched the water where Blinkie should be as it cleared up. They smiled down at him as he blew a few little bubbles and started exploring the new place.

There are so many shells on the beach, but one catches the eye, unbroken. A little fish is caught in a pool in the shore... How sad.

Kodakai liked Seryn. They were an interesting species which began its life in the water and eventually gained the ability to float through the air. In addition to that, they were incredibly smart and fairly magical. They seemed like the perfect companions for someone like him. He pondered whether or not he should try to raise some of his own. He intentionally didn't voice that thought, lest Silver inundate him with an overwhelming amount of tips and offers to get him one.
"I like him." Koda said with a nod. He felt that Silver would want to hear that, so he was happy to say it. "It is nice to meet you, Blinkie. I hope we can become friends." That was as much as he was willing to say for now. He loved Silver, he really did, but now did not feel like the time for a lecture on scale cleaning or whatever other random thing would pop into their head if he even hinted at getting a pet of his own.

"I'm glad," Silver nodded. They were always happy to have Koda's approval, even if they didn't feel like they needed it. The two of them got along so well that they could predict one another's responses, yet hearing it out loud still made them feel better than just knowing it did.
Now that they were able to just spend some time together, Silver was really wrapped up in thoughts about whether or not they appreciated Koda enough. He did so much for them, both explicitly and implicitly, and just hearing him voice a thought they both knew he had made them really think about that. They stared blankly down at the clear pool of water where Blinkie was swimming in circles and blowing an occasional bubble. Though they were seeing him, they definitely weren't thinking about him. Their thoughts raced from one topic to the next, most of them revolving around their relationship with Koda and whether or not they had been literally the worst bonded in the history of the ritual.

There was always a bit of mystery when it came to Silver. No matter how well they knew each other, he could never learn to predict when their mood would suddenly shift like that, probably because they themselves had never learned how to either. He could, however, feel it coming and do what he could to mitigate it. Sometimes, all it took was a gentle nod in a different direction.
"Now tell me," Koda said. "How big do you think he'll be by the time he learns to fly. He can do that, right, learn to fly?" Koda was reasonably confident that he knew the answer to that question, but he wasn't asking for his own sake. The easiest way to sidetrack them was to ask them about their creatures. They simply couldn't resist talking about it, and Koda understood why. It was practically their whole life. They hardly did anything that didn't involve their creatures, including coming here to visit him.

"Ah, yea, I think so," Silver said. They blinked a few timed and the little Seryn came into focus. He swam in tidy little circles without a care in the world. He was too young to worry about much. Other than food, of course.
"Seryn usually learn to fly by the time they reach this size," they explained, holding their paws apart to demonstrate. It was clear that they had fallen for Koda's little trick to calm them down. Whether or not they realized it, they continued on. "There are some wild varieties of Seryn which have lost the ability to fly, but I've never met any and I don't think this guy is related to one." It was so strange to think of such a little fish as being capable of flying around and casting magic, but that was the sort of weird thing they had long since gotten used to around here.

Well, how about that. Koda had learned something after all. There were wild versions of the species which were decidedly less magical. That was worthwhile information, he supposed. He sometimes wondered what the world outside of the Canyon was like, and though he was willing to travel to the city from time to time to investigate, he wasn't so sure about going that far from home. Especially not after how Silver had gone the last time...
"Interesting," he said, watching the little brown fish swim about. It did make a lot of sense why they liked to bring Seryn with them when they went fishing together. For one thing, it was easiest to bond with an aquatic creature around water, but Koda also got the feeling that Silver thought he would like them. If it weren't for the nature of their creation, he could see the Clan of Thalassa and Seryn being good friends. Unfortunately with the state of things, he was sure that was never going to b e a reality.

That has to be the teeniest, tiniest fish in the entire world, but you caught it!

Blinkie floated around in the shallow water. He looked at all of the rocks and plants around him and took a nibble of one. He liked the taste so he continued to idly chew on it as he let the water push him around. It was a nice life, being a baby fish without a care in the world.
Silver went back to watching Blinkie, even though he wasn't doing anything interesting. They were thinking about Seryn and what they could remember about some other Seryn they knew. Ashul was the first one, of course, and though they knew they had a long history, they couldn't recall what he was like as a baby.
"Sometimes," they continued as if they hadn't just paused for a long time to chase an empty train of thought. "Ah... Ashul, Ashul is really big, you know? Ah, like as big as me, even bigger if you count the, ah, tail."

Kodakai too watched Blinkie swim around and chomp on some stray leaves. It made him smile to watch the little guy. He could clearly see why Silver liked him so much. It was rather soothing to watch the free way he floated about.
He was somewhat familiar with Ashul. Ashul had been friends with Silver for a very long time, perhaps even longer than Koda had. Koda thought about the fact that he used to be tiny, just like the tiny fish swimming around in front of them. He did not think that he had ever been that tiny, but he could be wrong. It was difficult to recall that far back and what the world was really like without his biases to distort the perspective.
"You will have to introduce us some day," Kodakai said. "I would like to see how he has grown." He was genuinely curious about a fully grown Seryn's abilities. He had never seen them for himself before.
