The straps of the saddle bag didn’t quite fit around the tree, causing it to stick out of the bag at an awkward angle… but at least it seemed secure. She gave it a few good shoves to make sure and sure enough, it stayed put. Fiera glanced over at Desert to make sure he was ok, and found him nipping at lush tufts of grass in front of him, completely ignoring what Fiera was doing. Good- hopefully she’d be able to get him moving soon. She trekked back over to the clump of saplings, ignoring the people that had stopped to look at Desert (the largest thing in the field). A few moments later, she had selected another sapling, as she would take nothing but the best baby trees for her spots. With a bit more effort, she was able to drag that one over to Desert as well.

This time she dragged it around to the other side though, to ensure that the thundergug was evenly balanced during the loading process. Once it was loaded into his right saddle bag, Fiera went back for more, leaving her savannah thundergug to adjust to the weight. He seemed pretty ok with it so far- she was sure that he could handle a few more. She leafed (haha, get it) through the saplings, looking for another ideal specimen. She wanted to grab only the healthiest ones, so that she couldn’t be accused of roughly handling the ones she picked up if they didn’t do so well, or accused of selecting only the lightest (and thus fastest to plant) sapling. Eventually she grabbed the next tree, pulling it out of line (to the chagrin of other planters as the other saplings on either side began to lean inward) and hefting it toward Desert.

This heavy lifting was the hardest part of the tree planting, in Fiera’s opinion. The planting would be hard too, but at least that was helping by Desert doing the actual transportation to the spots they were meant to be planted in. Each tree was about five feet tall already, with a sack full of soil attached, which made them pretty difficult to carry around. Most people (especially the smaller races) would have a bit of trouble transporting them. But Fiera? No problem! She managed to heft the third one into Desert’s back right saddle bag, leaving only one spot open. She’d have to pick a really good one for the coveted final spot. Fiera peered along the line, looking for the perfect tree to plant. Hmm… yeah, this was taking a lot of time, so she just grabbed the closest one instead. She had to get going already, they were losing daylight.

When that one was strapped in, Fiera decided that they were finally ready to go. She scrambled up onto Desert’s back and the savannah thundergug stood up, already understanding what they were going to do. She sat herself down in the saddle, getting comfy (or at least as comfy as she could with the shovels and other digging tools behind her) before picking up the reins. “Ok Desert, let’s go!” She said, flicking them. The thundergug grunted and began to trundle forward, putting one plodding foot in front of the other. She had to gently tug on the reins from time to time to keep him on the right path. The area closest to the sign up was already pretty well planted and the trees weren’t that far apart, so getting Desert between them without knocking any leaves off was a bit like threading a particularly large thread through a small needle.

Fiera liked to think she managed it well enough, though. She barely clipped any of the trees by the time she entered a more open area. Skipping the patches that people were already working on, Fiera gave Desert to speed up a bit so they could select their own little patch of land. Now that he had room to trot, Desert was more than happy to pick up the pace, shaking the earth as he trundled by. Finally Fiera found herself near the opposite end of the would-be forest, surrounded by the little colored flags that the head volunteer had told her about. Red flags first, right? She looked around, shielding her eyes as scanned the surrounding area. The flags were spaced somewhat far apart, but she could see a couple of red flags around here. They were pretty far apart from each other, with the other colors filling in the gaps.
