Ever since they had stumbled upon the quest board on accident not that long ago, Silver made a habit of checking it for new things every once and a while if they were in the area. They weren't sure they were the best person for a lot of these jobs, but they were sure that they'd find one they liked some day. It was a great way to get out and do something new. Who knows? They might even enjoy it. As soon as they saw the new quest regarding planting saplings, they had no doubts that this was a quest they would absolutely be able to do. They were an excellent gardener! Not such a good hole digger, though. So they bolted back home and all the way back again, this time with a creature named Caffeine at their side. Caffeine had no idea what she had signed up for, of course, but she was an excellent hole digger, which Silver was hoping would come in handy during all of the tree planting business they were about to get up to. "We're here to sign up for the tree planting quest," Silver said with a grin. "Well, I'll sign up for both of us, how about that?" They smiled awkwardly hoping that their joke was actually funny and not just weird.
Once they were done making a fool of themselves, it was time to get together with everyone else and have a quick lesson on planting trees. Silver spent the entire lesson brushing dirt off of Caffeine's scales instead of paying attention to what anyone was saying. They already knew how to plant trees! It was silly that they had to sit through the whole thing instead of getting started right away.
The good news was that Caffeine loved the attention. She pressed her head into their chest and nearly bowled them right over. "Woah there, save it for the digging," they said quietly. They didn't want anyone to overhear them talking to their pets.

Silver hoped that they could get the presentation over soon so they could get started on the actual work part of the quest. When they signed up they hadn't realized that so many other people would also be there! Well, it was a lot of people from their perspective, anyway. They didn't usually hang out in crowds larger than, say... two.
"Good news," Silver whispered again to Caffeine. They couldn't help themselves. "You're the only rainbow Scuta here. That's gotta count for something, right?"
Caffeine didn't look impressed. Maybe she'd rather there was another rainbow Scuta around. At least that wouldn't be boring. She didn't know any other Scuta, actually, and she'd love to meet one. Not that she had any idea what Silver was talking about anyway. She definitely wasn't thinking about making friends. More like what that bug over there might taste like. Actually, she was going to give it a try right now.

"Woah, hold on girl, you can't break the line until the guy's done talking. I know how exciting it is, but you have to hold it together for just another minute, okay?" Silver pushed on Caffeine's chest in order to force her to take a step back and not go charging into the park after who knows what.
It was then that they realized a couple of people nearby were staring at them. Hmm, maybe that was why they didn't bring a rainbow Scuta with them. It would probably have been easier to keep hold of a smaller creature, or one with a leash or something, but that wasn't their style. Besides, everyone would be itching to meet Caffeine once they realized how good she was at digging! They would all line up to pet her and ask her to dig for their trees, too. That part probably wasn't going to happen, but it didn't stop them from imagining it.

Finally! The guy was done talking. He pointed to a pile of shovels they were passing out and explained how to sign off on one, but Silver wasn't listening. They had Caffeine! Forgetting the fact that they had yet to teach her how to dig on command, Silver wandered over to the designated area in a hurry.
Crap. They forgot to grab a tree, too! They would need the sapling if they wanted to, you know, plant it. They shamefully walked back to the area where the saplings were kept and grabbed as many as they could carry, which was a measly two. It looked like most of their time would be spent walking back and forth between this area and the planting area. Couldn't they be a little closer? Caffeine sniffed at the trees and tried to lick a leaf, but Silver pulled it away at the last second not allowing her to get a taste.

"Woah there, not for tasting! These are baby trees. You can't just eat them. They're not strong enough to grow back," they explained. Caffeine was already not interested in what they had to say, so she started following someone who smelled nice. Silver sighed dramatically and waddled after her, still clutching the trees they were holding.
"Oh come on Caffeine, you can't be following strangers around like that!" Silver laughed loud enough for the other person to hear them. "Sorry about her, she likes you! I'm pretty sure that's a compliment."
The stranger looked puzzled and Silver took that as a cue that they should leave. They stepped around Caffeine and attempted to lead her back to the planting area. As much as they'd love to make friends, maybe now wasn't the time for it. Especially not with Caffeine wandering off so often! Maybe they should have picked a more well seasoned creature to accompany them after all.

They eventually made their way to where they needed to be with no more significant issues. Silver gently dropped the saplings onto the ground nearby, being careful not to snap any twigs off while they were doing it. They weren't sure if their new found healing magic worked on saplings, so they were going to be careful. Also it would be pretty awkward to explain to the guy running the place what had happened. It was really for the best if they didn't use any magic around people they didn't know, really.
"Okay Caffeine, you just need to dig over here. Or thereish, you know it doesn't really matter I don't think, as long as it's far enough from those trees over there," Silver explained. Caffeine looked at them when she heard her name, but she didn't do anything else. Right. She didn't know how to dig on command. Well, what better time to learn?

Would they regret not picking up a shovel? At least not yet they didn't. They squatted down in the general area they wanted the tree to go and called Caffeine over. She was still distracted by some bug or another, so they pulled out a bag of treats they brought for the occasion. The treats had a strong smell that enticed Caffeine to give up on her little butterfly and come over.
"That's a good girl," Silver said. They scratched behind her ear and gave her a treat. Earning treats was so easy! Caffeine wanted another one, so she tried to nose the bag out of their hand. Silver was expecting that, of course, and pulled it away before she got the chance. "If you want another one, you'll have to help me out here. That's how this works, got it?" Wow, that sounded like extortion. Was forcing creatures to work for treats manipulative? ... Nah, they didn't think so.

"Okay, one more, then we'll get to the digging part, okay?" Silver tossed another treat to Caffeine, but since she didn't know how to catch them she let it bounce off her nose and then ate it out of the grass. Silver stifled a laugh. As cute as she was, they didn't want to laugh at her. It was a bad habit to have when they came around a pet that could actually understand them, so they tried not to do it if they could resist.
"Here's another one, see it?" Silver held up the treat and Caffeine's eyes were fixated on it. "It's here, get it," Silver tossed it onto the ground they had mentally marked off for the planting of trees. Caffeine grabbed the treat off the ground, some grass included, and ate it quickly. "Ah, good job," they said. They weren't sure how tree planting became a digging lesson, but there they were.

Silver used their own paws to remove some of the top soil and grass included and dropped a treat in the little hole. Then they quickly followed it up by plopping a still-attached clump of grass back on top. "There you go, you'll have to dig for this one!" they said with a laugh. Caffeine licked her nose and looked somewhat offended by their suggestion.
It felt weird to be removing so much grass and other plant life in order to plant trees. That's how people worked, though. Always changing and 'improving' things. They did it themselves in their gardens as well. The tree would have a longer lasting effect on the park than just the grass would, but nature didn't always make the optimum choices for the enjoyment of people. Nature usually didn't come through with lawnmowers and tons of boot prints trampling baby trees, either. In the end, they felt like it was probably fair.

Caffeine genuinely liked to dig, so she had no problem tearing up the earth to look for her treat. In fact, after she found it, she was happy to keep going. After she ate it in all of its dirt-covered glory. Silver considered the fact that maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all, but they were sure that a little dirt wouldn't really hurt her.
"That's a good girl!" Silver cheered. Caffeine didn't seem to notice. Then they went over to where they plopped down the saplings and inspected them. This one should do! They eagerly brought it back and tried to nudge Caffeine away from her new hole. She backed off, but immediately started another one nearby. They were going to have to fill in some holes and explain what happened later. For now, they had a tree to plant! They plunked it into the dirt and covered it back up loosely.
"Perfect," they said, beaming. One down... however many to go. How was everyone else doing, anyway?
