"Such a help," Lethalia sighed at the pup, still with that joyous grin on her face. "Well now, y'ready to conquer this thing now?" Gold yipped excitedly, of course having no idea what her owner was saying but like any dog, very excited that something was being said to her! She raced all around the satyr, bouncing up easily onto the stump she had been using the last few weeks to get onto the wagon. This part was great! Aside from the fact her owner had moved the wagon. Now it was quite too far back to get to from the stump. Gold posed there for a good moment, tail wagging slowly as she stared longingly off the edge... how does this work now... Lethalia was quite pleased she didn't seem to be giving up like she might have a while ago, but she should be able to manage this just fine now! "Come on, kid!"jump up|9

Gold looked up to one of her least favorite sights; her human up on the platform that she couldn't get to! The houluh barked at her to get down from there, but to no avail - just more calling over. What did the satyr expect her to do, just jump up there? Then the satyr patted the wooden floor, just like she would do when she wanted to get Gold up onto a rock or something of the sort, showing the houluh the way up. Something clicked with their familiar command, and the pup gave a quick spin around the stump in her excitement. Gold was capable of managing a tidy hop off a short stump nowadays, thank gods! Now at least Lethalia didn't have to worry about the dismount from a tall place hurting the pup, since crash landings were enough of a lesson to learn to avoid them with enough practice. jump up|10

Gold careened around to where her owner was, not even pausing to think about her jump before launching herself up onto the wooden platform. Her claws found no purchase on the smooth wood and the pup skidded a few feet, coming to a stop at her owner's hooves. "Well now. Good job, Goldie!"It shouldn't have been surprising that it was lackluster at this point. Gold had been out hiking with her in the back of the property, and had likely unknowingly jumped up bigger things than this before. Just that this had been her big 'obstacle', now quite tidily mastered! Well, perhaps not mastered, but they were getting there. At least that was an idea; see if she can get the houluh used to not sliding on the slick material. Not everything she jumped on was going to have the tooth of rock and bark, which doesn't seem to be a lesson she'd been exposed to enough. jump up|11

Now that jumping up there wasn't as much of an issue, Gold didn't grumble all that much when Lethalia hopped off the platform. She waited until she was followed to the ground before stepping right back up, turning around and looking at Gold expectantly. Saying nothing and just patting the stand, it was clear that she was expecting to be joined up there again. It was still a game, so Gold wagged her tail and followed Lethalia back up. Only just remembering how slick the wood was, her hind legs splayed out on either side of her as she sailed her way across the surface. Blunt claws gave her no help here, or she didn't know how to use them as much aid anyway. "Not bad!" Lethalia gave it, bending over to pet and gently box with the pup as a reward. She was getting great at listening where to hop up to by now, at least! jump up|12

It only took stepping off the platform once more before the puppy started grumbling about it, looking around as though there must be something better to do than appeal to whatever this was the satyr wanted her to do. It was a lot of work, and Gold was definitely losing patience with this simple routine. She jumped on lots of stuff in more interesting places, did they have to keep doing this? Gold was a little more heartened when a toy was produced in her owner's hands, ears and tail recovering 'magically' from their tired droop. The cute squeaky cinnamon roll was new enough that seeing it crop up was quite exciting for the pup, especially when the satyr started out squeaking it behind her back! Tossing it on the trailer bed was all it took to get Gold rocketing up there once more, as if she had never run out of energy in the first place. Well, that was one way to get in enough practice bouncing up and down the trailer, and the pup seemed to learn traction a little better in the process. Of her two critters trained as mounts, Vidarr would have been the one slightly too frightening for a tiny pup like this to even be around, let alone dream of jumping atop of. Mavelle was a far better choice, even if she was a bit spooky... she wasn't terrifying like a drake would be. For now, making the leap from a wooden platform or fence to a living creature was going to be a bit too large at first, even for a fiesty lady like Gold. To build up her confidence, Lethalia took an un-mauled brown sarane dummy, and outfitted it with one of the beaten old breaking saddles. The saddle was more than a little over-sized for the dummy, hanging off it's rear and making a canopy over the dragon's 'head'. It would work out though, since it gave them both a place to sit, and the sawhorse the dummy was built upon was sturdy enough. ride on|1

Goldie was giving it quite the strange look, though. In spite of thorough cleanings and oilings, it was likely hard to disguise the smell of drake from a nose so keen. Gold approached with stiff legs, every moment closer taking a stuttering step closer. The pup's tail was held stiff and upright, and every moment she paused her tail flagged and one leg tucked up, 'pointing' at the big dumb 'dragon' she was stalking up to. Form was still a far cry from that of an adult, but one could see why these guys could be working dogs. If 'pointing' at things was in their blood, so was some kind of instinct for hunting or herding. Lethalia's hoof scuffing against the dirt sent the pup skittering away, and she had to tamp down hard on the impulse to giggle. Poor baby. "You're okay, Goldie," she reassured her, walking up to the scary dummy herself and laying an arm over the saddle. "See? Nothin' t'be afraid of!"ride on|2

Not so easily fooled, the houluh made a wary circle around the huge creature her owner was acting so casually around, watching it closely for any kind of movement. Scouting completed, she rounded back to where the satyr waited at the thing's head. Starting with her little growl, she lunged forward and barked in the dummy's face a few times before hurriedly backing off - kicking up a little dirt once she was a safe distance away. "Y'got him good, I think it's fine now, yeah?" Lethalia encouraged, patting her thighs. "C'mere." To Gold's credit, she didn't do 'drama' for as long as other dogs might - she had given the dummy enough of a piece of her mind, so she was completely at ease coming up to it now. Dealt with, done with it. That was quite nice compared to a more cautious critter, but naturally it meant Goldie was going to find her own kind of trouble no problem. ride on|3

Throwing a leg over the saddle, Lethalia had to brace her hooves on either side of the dummy to keep from sliding off with the entire kit. It shouldn't have come as any surprise that the dummy didn't have enough of a girth to hold the saddle in place. "Well? Come on!" Lethalia encouraged, patting the space between her lap and the swell of the horn. Though Gold cocked her head strangely at the request, she had popped up onto their dummy mount in a flash. That little nose was quite curious about all the interesting smells on the drake saddle, so at least that was a kind of reward. This was the real reason the satyr had decided to first teach the pup to jump onto things when prompted; the height and platform shouldn't be any problem for her! What would be interesting was when another living creature was part of it. It really wasn't much of a problem for her to get up there, but how would she do when their mount was moving? ride on|4

This was the part Gold hated; getting her to repeat the same trick a few different ways. Lethalia had been able to sneak some jerky bits into her pocket to renew the puppy's interest, luring the pup back into the saddle alone a few times. Right now she seemed to be impressed enough that she got a whole piece of jerky, rather than being rationed to a few tiny morsels! Just to make sure she'd covered her bases, and because it was likely how she'd have to ride Mavelle, Lethalia nudges the oversized saddle off the drake dummy. The sawhorse was a little 'spiny' to straddle with just the blanket, but it wouldn't take long. To save her legs from little claws, Lethalia draped a blanket over her thighs and called the pup up. She should have expected it would be no problem, the pup settling in her lap without a thought. Gold took to things pretty easily; variations didn't confuse her much once she had them down. Hopefully the trend would continue! Gold lv|11 ly|22 ride on|5

Mavelle was thankfully one of her more forgiving creatures, in spite of also being the most sensitive. The mare was still eager to please, and over the years had put up with hauling plenty of unruly sarane hatchlings around - and she abhorred the little beasts. Apparently things were different with the houluh pup. Mavelle tucked herself close to Lethalia's shoulder, more concerned about the lanky puppy than Gold was of the giant equine. Like usual, Lethalia had both the mare's halter and bridle on, the lead rope trailing on the ground and the Satyr lightly holding the mare's halter under her chin. Mav watched the pup prancing all over with unfailingly pricked ears, which didn't twitch but to track the houluh. Though having grown pretty tolerant of things at this point, having to hold still with one of the puppies running around her was agony! Lethalia stood by and reassured her with apple sections, but even that only went so far. Gold had moved on long ago, especially since she had 'met' this equillion plenty of times in the paddock; old news! The equillion raised a long sigh when Lethalia called the puppy back over. This was going to happen regardless, wasn't it? Well, at least the puppy wasn't as bad as the less domestic predators their owner liked. Mavelle lv|24.1 ly|53.1 Gold lv|11.1 ly|22.1 ride on|6

Confident enough with Mavelle to know she shouldn't spook at the pup jumping up, she left the mare ground tied to haul herself up onto her back. Taking the blanket draped over the mare's backside, Lethalia draped it over her lap to save her thighs from unaware blunt-sharp puppy claws. The renewed activity reeled Gold back in to see what her human was up to, growling to find how high up the satyr managed to get herself. Gold whined and gave a small bark, seeing if she could tell the woman down this time. "No, you come up here," Lethalia told her, as though they were having a real conversation over it. At that request, Gold's mind clearly hit an internal error. Lethalia had patted her lap just like she knew was the ask to jump up there, but... asking her to get on a bigger creature? Her human must be a little crazy. "C'mon baby girl, you can do it," she tried again, sowing off the galabex-shapes clasped in a fist. "Know y'want to! C'mon!" As usual, Gold whined and grumbled her share as she walked all around (and even under, making the satyr cringe and thank her patient mare), deciding how to approach this. Mavelle was tall, but Lethalia didn't really think she was far off from the largest thing the pup had jumped up onto. ride on|7

Did they have to back up a step? Lethalia slid off Mavelle's back, smoothing the blanket alone over her instead. She turned to a curious Gold, right at her feet since returning to the ground, and scooped the puppy up. "Up here, see?" she informed the pup, patting the mare's back before setting the houluh on her. Both hands held the pup steady as she froze atop the equillion, legs straight and stiff as she regained her bearings; okay, so this may be a little different than just jumping onto a saddled sawhorse! "Good girl!" Tense as she was, those words were a pretty surefire way to get that tail going. Getting her wagging seemed to make the rest of her loosen up, sniffing all around and seeming to figure out the scope of being on top of another, much bigger animal. "Kinda' cool, huh?" Lethalia continued to encourage, offering the pup a few scraps of jerky from her fingers to reinforce that it was neat up there. At least she was pretty easy about it all; she was just getting her balance, but even this strange occurrence didn't really seem to stress Gold out all that much! "Yeah, Gold's m'brave girl," she praised as she lifted the pup off Mavelle's back. "You're lovely too, Mav," she was certain to throw in there, patting the mare's neck even if she was mostly asleep. The mare really didn't mind a puppy all that much! ride on|8

As was the usual with Goldie, she only needed a repeat of the same before she was quite bored of simply being set on top of the mare. The second time the pup was already finding her footing to sit neatly along the mare's wide spine, and seemed to be getting quite annoyed with her owner's hands restricting her movements while she tried to 'help' hold the pup up. Apparently that was her sign to move on! Setting the puppy down, Lethalia took her spot and replaced the blanket on her lap, as much for her protection as for Mavelle. Gold pinned her ears back and looked all around when her owner called her up, this being a little different than being set up there. "Is it different? C'mon!" Lethalia soothed, patting her thighs in encouragement to see if she could get Gold up so easily! It looked as though she could. As though watching a windup toy, Gold hunkered down into a position to leap up and then just wavered there as she thought out how to do this jump... Soon enough Lethalia was catching a houluh into her lap, cheering her on and passing off a piece of jerky. Mavelle sighed at them, shuffling her weight around on her hooves, making Leth aware her lap was suddenly empty. Gold had hit the floor the very moment their stand started to move! ride on|9

"Hey! Y'did good, wanna try again?" Lethalia asked brightly of the pup; she looked a little startled by it still, but was willing to come back up for more jerky. "What d'ya think about movin' a little?" the satyr asked, wrapping an arm around the pup to make her feel a little more secure, and squeezed Mavelle's sides into an easy walk. Gold made an attempt at flailing out of her owner's arms for a few moments, but calmed as her grip didn't let up and... nothing as bad as she was expecting happened at all, even as scary as the big creature moving had originally been. Huh. "Great job, Gold!" was crowed as she handed Gold a treat. Holding her reward in her mouth, she seemed to debate whether or not it was safe enough up here to eat with the mare walking around and all... It didn't take her long to lay down with her special prize of a full piece of jerk. Over the next day, Lethalia worked with the pup on walking and trotting around the ring with her atop Mavelle. Expectedly, after the first time Gold decided riding on a moving target was fine, she accepted everything else just like she'd been doing it for her entire life. Not half bad, and Leth was quite smitten with the silly trick! It may or may not work out when the pup was full grown, but maybe there would also be some bigger mounts around someday.
