Fiera had never touched a single fishing pole in her life before. The whole idea of fishing was completely foreign to her, to the point where she would have even known what end of the fishing pole to throw at the water. After a bit of research, it turned out that you didn't throw the pole at the water, just a part of it. You could have fooled her. Instead, you were supposed to put a hook and some bait on it, and then throw THAT into the water with a string. That made more sense to her- though she still had to figure out how to get the string on the pole. Luckily she had Bubbles here to "help". And by help, Fiera of course meant that Bubbles kept wandering off, causing Fiera to break her focus to make sure that she didn't fall off of a cliff somewhere.

She loved Bubbles of course, but the creature really did have the attention span of a gnat. She sighed as Bubbles came trekking back for the third time as Fiera called her. Once the houluh was settled next to her, Fiera examined her environment. She was at a low, sandy slope right next to the river, bordered by higher, rockier walls on either side. Above her was a large tree, it's boughs spreading far out over the stream. It was a pretty well-secluded spot, so Fiera had the feeling that no one would bother them and they wouldn't have much competition for fish here. In addition, the shade from the tree would hopefully lure some aquatic creatures over who were trying to get out of the sun. The water was bright and clear here, not murky at all, so the sun was definitely something they had to worry about today.

The humanish couldn't see any fish in there right now, but perhaps she just didn't know what to look for. It was fine if there was nothing there right now anyway- she still had to figure out this whole "Fishing pole" business. The device was currently disassembled in her lap, and she was busy trying to figure out how to unspool the fishing line through the... the, uh. The little loop hole things along the pole. Those thingies. She had no idea what they were actually called. Once she managed to reel it through though, she closed up the mechanism again and tried to not lose track of the translucent thread. Then she went through a big metal box she had brought along- dubbed a 'tackle box' by locals, though she couldn't imagine why it would be called that- for a lure or hook or bait or SOMETHING to tie to the end of it.

Finally she pulled out a lure- a rubbery thing with sharp hooks on the end of it. She was quick to immediately snap the box shut after that though, as Bubbles was already trying to shove her nose in it. "No, Bubbles." She said, an exhausted tone in her voice. The last thing she needed was an emergency trip to the veterinarian to dig hooks out of Bubbles's nose. She appreciated the houluh's curiosity, but not when it came to things that could get her hurt. "Alright." She said, standing up and brushing herself off. "Let's see how this works." She said, and drew the pole over her shoulder, holding it by the reel. She flicked it forward, and the hook whipped around and nearly hit her in the face. Fiera yelped and dropped the pole suddenly, and Bubbles leapt back several feet, hiding behind a nearby bush for cover.

There was no way that that was how that was supposed to work, Fiera realized slowly. It had nearly taken a chunk of her ear off! She had seen videos on how fishing was supposed to work- the lure was supposed to fly gracefully out across the water and land right smack in the center of the stream, not just whip around the end of the fishing pole and injure everyone in the vicinity. What had she done wrong? She examined the pole, looking it up and down. It didn't APPEAR broken, and she HAD just bought it. She gave the reel a few spins experimentally- it released the thread just fine. So what had... oh. She had been holding onto the reel when casting it. As a result, the line couldn't unspool and instead it just flailed wildly into Fiera's face instead. Well, color her embarrassed. Time to try again.

Now that she was sure that she was just grabbing the handle and not the reel, Fiera wound up for another cast. She heard a rustle as Bubbles retreated into the bushes again, and couldn't really blame her. "Okay, and... go!" She shouted, whipping the rod forward. She saw the lure fly out, down, and landed just a few feet away from her in the stream. Hm. She had hoped it would have gone further, but at least it was more successful then her last try. "So now I just... wait, right?" She mused to herself, and then looked around. She had her bag, she had Bubbles... and she didn't have much else to do. Suddenly, she was regretting skipping to this so quickly. She'd probably get pretty bored before the day was out, seeing as she wasn't expecting to catch much today. She was no expert fisherwoman, after all.

What else could she do right now...? Oh! That's right! If she DID catch anything, she'd need a place to put the fish! She walked over to her bag, and pulled out a bucket she had bought for just this reason. She jammed her pole in a crack between two nearby rocks to keep it at the right angle (and realized she'd really need to find a better place to put it), and backed away slowly. When it was clear that it wasn't going to fall out, she took the bucket and brought it down to the water's edge. Realizing that it was safe now, Bubbles crept out from her hiding place and walked up alongside Fiera. She gave the water a brief sniff to make sure it was safe, and then knelt down and took some sips from the clear water. Fiera shrugged- she probably needed the drink, considering how long they'd been walking to get here.

Once Bubbles was done and had backed off some, Fiera leaned down to put the bucket in the water. Once she had some water in there, she set it back down on the shore. There. That was one task done. Now she just needed... oh, right, her chair. Fiera once again retreated to her bag. It wasn't small to say the least- in fact, it was one of the biggest duffel bags she had ever seen before. Still, it got the job done and held everything she needed for trips like this, so she couldn't complain. Unless it was complaining about her back- she could always find something to whine about with regards to that. After a bit of digging around (and realizing that some of these things she could have left at home- why did she bring a traffic cone?), she managed to find the folded up chair at the bottom.

It was a clever thing, this chair. They didn't have anything like this back in her home town, even though it was technically so simple. A bit of folding metal, a bit of canvas, and you had a chair that could be bundled up and stored easily. Quite convenient, if you asked her. She dragged the odd mechanism over to the bucket and set it up next to it, pulling on the edges until it was safely unfolded and placed on the ground. She flopped down in it, but realized she was forgetting something and got up again right away, groaning. "Can't fish without the dang pole..." She said to herself, and went over to where she had jammed it in between the rocks of the cliff face surrounding this sandy slope. As she did, she glanced back out at the water. The line was still sitting right where she had left it, if perhaps swept downstream a bit.

Perfect- just how she wanted it. Without further ado, Fiera went back to her chair and flopped down in it. She held the pole for a moment but decided that it was too annoying to actually hold it, and instead tucked it beneath the left armrest, letting it flop across her lap. Bubbles approached her curiously now that she had stopped moving around so much, and the humanish gave her some head scritches as she came close. "Hey girl. Enjoying the nice weather?" She asked rhetorically. The houluh wagged her tail and flopped down next to the chair, leaning up against Fiera's legs with a pleased sigh. Fiera was feeling pretty comfy herself, now that she thought of it. Even if she didn't catch anything, it was nice just sitting in the shade next to a burbling stream. As she sat there, she could feel her eyelids involuntarily growing heavier and heavier...

What a cool looking fish! It is easily caught, but the peril of walking back the way one came seems to be a purpley spikey... thing?

Fiera heard something... splashing? She was on the sea. She couldn't swim. The splashing was getting louder. She... she... Fiera awoke to barking. "Huh? What?" She mumbled, realizing that she had completely fallen asleep while waiting for her rod to catch something. "Oh." She said as she looked at the water, where there was a lot of splashes breaking up the otherwise placid water. Bubbles was barking up a storm at it, though whether it was because she wanted Fiera to wake up or because she wanted to investigate herself was up in the air. "It's okay Bubbles, I can get it, it's fine." She said, getting up. Wait, no. She was supposed to use the rod for this. Fiera picked up the fishing rod, which was quickly unspooling all its thread. She grabbed onto the reel and pulled back as hard as she could, causing the unspooling to stop in its tracks.

So far so good. Fiera approached the shore as she tried reeling in the fish- or at least she hoped it was a fish. She supposed that it could be a bit of seaweed (riverweed?) or garbage, but hopefully her luck wasn't quite that bad. She watched as the splashes grew closer and closer as she agonizingly reeled in the fish, inch by inch. Bubbles's barking only increased in intensity as she pulled it in, until Fiera could finally see the shape of the actual animal in the water. Sure enough, it was indeed a fish. It was murky grey in color and about the size of her hand, though she couldn't make out any other details as of that moment. Still, it was enough to encourage her to keep going, and she pulled on the rod with renewed enthusiasm. "We've almost got it, Bubbles!" She remarked to her houluh, who seemed equally as excited.

Fiera kept fighting the fish, excited to see what her very first catch would be. With one last heave, she managed to drag it out of the water, reeling it in tighter to the pole. It flopped around madly, but soon seemed to exhaust itself and just hung there, panting, on the end of the fishing pole. By Fiera's estimate, it was... a tiny shark, pretty much. It definitely wasn't the massive predator of the waves that Fiera was familiar with. In fact, it was kind of pathetic, if not a little cute. Feeling bad for the odd little creature, Fiera dipped it in her catch bucket and gently removed the hook from its mouth. The fish immediately dove into the bucket, thrashing around indignantly before settling down at the bottom. "Well, that's one down, eh Bubbles?" She said to her spotty houluh, who was now trotting over to her.
