What an odd creature, Silver thought. They found themselves enchanted by its dark, gem-like eyes. It was beautiful in a strange way. They had first encountered her in the mansion, during the high tide. It was fitting, then, that they brought her to see the river while it was also high. They wondered what she must think of such a strange place, so different from her home. She seemed more than happy to come with them, though, so they tried not to overthink the process. It wouldn't be a trip to the river without a Seryn, and true to form Silver had one in their classic glass bowl. It was a wonder that they had never broken it. Seryn, of course, resented being carried around in bowls, especially the young ones. Aloe swam around in anxious circles, waiting for her moment to break free. Silver sighed. They wished they could properly explain to her that it would all be fine soon, but she was not likely to understand even if they did. Silver finally sat down at the edge of the river and kicked off their boots. They pulled some mud boots on, and waded out into the gentle current. 1[126.5, 0.2, 0.2]

Silver smiled softly as they felt the stream pushing gently against them. They always found the water of the river comforting. Perhaps it had something to do with their deep connection to Kodakai, or perhaps it was the reason they were even able to form such a bond in the first place. With these sorts of things, it was hard to tell what came first. In any case, they certainly couldn't remember.
Aloe strained against the edge of her bowl, wanting to see what was happening in the water below. She wanted to be part of that! She swam in excited circles, then pressed her nose against the glass once more. "Ah, patience now," Silver said softly. They had never seen her so excited before.
Silver leaned toward the water and slowly tipped the glass bowl out. Now that the water was leaving, Aloe didn't want to go after all! She swam back against the bottom of the bowl, trying to avoid being pulled to the surface. Eventually, however, the force of the water pushed her out of the bowl and into the stream with a little splash. It took her a moment to decide whether or not she liked it.

"It'll be alright there little one," Silver said. They leaned down and put their fingers into the water so that she could see that she was not alone. Aloe seemed to appreciate the gesture, since she went from swimming around in confused circles to gently swaying with the current. Now that she was used to it, it wasn't so bad at all. She could get used to this. She slowly swam back and forth, enjoying the way the current felt going with and against her fins.
Now that Aloe was sorted, what of Tessa? Silver didn't know much about the strange creature from the Maredian. It swam, it had three big eyes, and... well that was it, actually. They hadn't managed to figure out anything else about it. That's what they were out for today, though. To get to know her better, and also to give Aloe some time and space to exercise. Surely they could do both without too much trouble, right?
"What do you think, do you like it here?" Silver asked. The river was very different from the creature's home. Or was it? Did creatures they met in the mansion come from there... or were they just travellers and lost souls, looking for friends, just like they were?

In all their time exploring, they had never actually considered that the creatures might be drawn to the magic just like they were. Just like everyone was. Did the magic and pools of Maredian summon the mysterious swimming creature, or did it dwell there, manifested from the twisted magic that changed with the ages? If it was just a facet of the magic itself, where did it go when the tides changed? Was it manifested mere moments before they met? Did it dissolve into magic just like the decorations and trinkets? Thinking about it was making their head hurt, so they decided to change the subject.
"Would you like to meet my friend, Tessa? Come see Aloe. Aloe is a Seryn, and Seryn live in the water, at least when they're young." Silver began. They liked to talk to their creatures, especially the clever ones like Seryn. She was just a baby now, but Aloe would grow up to really understand what they were saying. They always liked that about Seryn. The spark of curiosity in their eyes.
Tessa continued to lay in the water near the bank of the river, as if she were afraid to come out into deeper water. Only her belly touched the water where she was.

The gentle flow of the river washed over Tessa and she continued to look down at the water as if she was unsure about what to do. Silver watched her quietly for a while, in case she made a decision without their help. When she didn't seem to be doing that, they took a careful step toward her. "Heeey there, Tessa," Silver said softly. "Do you want to come play with Aloe and I? We won't harm you, I promise. Especially not Aloe, look at how cute she is."
Silver continued to speak in a low, soothing voice for as long as they could manage. It was all an attempt to make Tessa feel more at ease. When she didn't budge, they knew they had to bring out the big one. The treat bag.
They reached into their bag and rummaged around with their paw. This was something they often did, so they were used to the feeling of everything inside. They were looking for a treat of some kind, but not just any treat, something a creature like Tessa would like. Something... fishy? They would have to try a few things and see what she liked the most. It was difficult to tell with aquatic creatures. Unlike land mammals, they often didn't have distinct teeth.

While Silver was digging in their bag for a fishy treat to give Tessa, a handful of living fish swam around between them. Big, small, grey, colorful, one after another, slowly floating away down stream. Silver didn't notice at first since they weren't really looking, but Tessa was watching them closely. Perhaps that was why she wasn't interested in whatever Silver and Aloe were doing before.
"Ah, here," Silver said. They pulled out a little bag of dried fish flakes. It wasn't the most healthy food they had, but it would have to do since it was all they could find. They smiled and went to offer some to Tessa when they noticed that her eyes, all three of them, were fixated on the water. A very small fish with a neon orange stripe was floating around in the water. How cute! Except Tessa definitely looked like she was about to snatch it up and eat it.
Silver was torn. They didn't want to stop Tessa from doing something that was natural to her, but they also thought the fish was really cute. Well that wasn't really fair to either of them, now was it? They couldn't just save the cute fish.

Luckily for Silver, their decision was made for them. Aloe had been floating around following one interesting thing after another, and her next interesting thing was the fish that Tessa and Silver were both staring at. Not that she knew they were doing that. She bumbled along, eventually lightly bumping the fish with her nose, sending it flying off in a different direction. Aloe looked briefly sad, then quickly got over it. Some things just weren't meant to be.
"Well, I guess there's that," Silver said. At least they didn't have to think about what to do any more. Did Aloe know what she was doing? Probably not. She was just a baby after all. No matter how clever Seryn were, she was just a little one.
"Sorry, Tessa," Silver said. "Do you still want a treat? I have the fishies," they said. The little flakes were thickly cut into chunks shaped vaguely like fish. Like a fishy biscuit. Silver thought they were gross, but that's what fish eaters liked, they supposed.
"Here you go then," they said. They tossed the treat into the water where it quickly began to swell and soften. The biscuit would be hard on its own, but the water made it palatable.

Silver swished their hand around in the river to get rid of the fishy smell. Now it smelled like fishy... water, which was better marginally than it was before. They would deal with it.
Tessa looked at the biscuit and swayed her head back and forth a bit. She wasn't sure how to feel about it. It smelled strongly of food. She liked food, so she was willing to give it a try. She gave it a cautious nibble, then a more fierce one once she realized it probably wouldn't hurt her. Silver beamed. This was exactly what they had intended to happen. She had done something other than sit in the shallow water looking around nervously. She was starting to open up, if only a little.
Aloe, of course, was still just floating about with no particular purpose in mind. She loved this new river place. There were so many cool things to see all around her. Very different from her home! Or perhaps not that different, depending on how she looked at it. There was no time for philosophy, though. She was here to learn about all the new things. There were just so many to choose from, she didn't know which one to inspect first.

Aloe found a small curled shell at the bottom of the river. It was very pretty. She wanted to know more about it, so she swam up very close to it. The rush of water around her fins flipped the light shell over to reveal that it was, indeed, empty. Devoid of the life that created it. That made her sad. She did not make a new friend after all. Ah well, on to the next thing. There was a pebble over there in a color she had never seen in a pebble before. How exciting!
Tessa finished her fish biscuit and looked up at Silver. She didn't mind them, but she also didn't know nearly anything about them. Who were they? Why were they generously showering her with gifts every time they saw her? She was eager to figure that out, lest there be more treats on offer if she did. Either way, she was not that afraid of them, even if they were kinda big and weird looking.
Tessa eased her head into the water and let herself sink down a bit so that about half of her body was covered. It felt nice and she let the cool water wash over her moist skin.

"Good idea," Silver said softly. They slowly adjusted themselves so that they could sit in the water, too. Their tail instantly became smaller as it touched the water, and conversely heavier as well. They hardly noticed, though, as that was common. They flinched as the cool water touched parts of their skin that had been dry until then. Even through their clothing, the water felt strange compared to the air. They had to take a second to get used to it.
"There!" they declared excitedly as their butt hit the rock that was submerged in the silty riverbed. With their bum on the rock and legs in the water, most of their torso was still dry. Their shorts and singlet were totally soaked, though. There was no going back from that. Quin squeaked and floated off to a nearby tree branch where he could resettle. Silver was being too noisy for his nap.
"Well, what do you think, do you want me to, ah, teach you how to catch a fish or something?" they asked. They really weren't sure what to do now other than to wait for Tessa to come around. Baby Seryn were very easy to entertain, but Tessa was proving to be more of a mystery.

Silver's head snapped to one side as they noticed a fish drawing near. That would be perfect for what they wanted to show Tessa. They quickly made a plan in their head to teach her how to catch it. Never mind the fact that she almost certainly knew how to catch her own food.
"Ah, Tessa look," they said. They pointed at the fish in the water, but Tessa just watched their outstretched hand. They sighed. Somehow they always forgot that creatures without hands tended to do that. They would have to come up with something else to show her where the fish was.
If they put their hand in the water, the fish would surely swim away. That would be the opposite of what they wanted. What to do then? While they were thinking about it, the fish happily nibbled at some leaves, then swam away. Dammit.
Meanwhile, Aloe floated nearby, watching the fish curiously. What was it? She had never met one of those before. She wanted to get to know it better. Perhaps they could be friends.
It was actually Aloe that caused the fish to dart away in a hurry, but she didn't think Silver had noticed that. As she approached it to make friends, it swam away as quickly as possible, thinking she was a predator.

Aloe looked disappointed. All she wanted to do was meet the new fishy. Ah well, can’t be friends with everyone. Just as soon as the disappointment came, it left again. She was not one to hold a grudge, after all.
The little Seryn decided instead that it would be a good time to see if she could find another fish. Surely there was a fish in here that wanted to be friends with her! She swam toward a rock, then around the rock, then toward a plant, and around the plant. Why were there no fish here? She was very confused.
From their position above her, Silver could see everything that Aloe was doing. Because she was a bit of a clumsy swimmer, the waves coming off of her fins and tail were enough to send all of the wildlife away before she could even hope to get close. Poor thing.
Nonetheless, she was determined to find something interesting. She would not be trapped with this boredom any longer! She continued peeking behind every rock, stick, and branch until she eventually found something.
It was a snail. It hardly moved, but it was alive! Aloe stared at it in wide-eyed wonder.
