Darky tried to carefully flatten out the slightly crumpled note from the pocket, smoothing as they walked. The task this month seemed a fairly easy one, compared to some of the previous assignments (A little mud really had nothing against hunting down a mad wizard’s wayward experiment). But, it had to do with gardening, yet again, which wasn’t exactly her.. Best strength. She had learned a veritable ton about plants and herbology in general since she had come to the Labs, but that only served to kind of equal out to an average understanding, considering the original baseline was so below par as to be ridiculous.
Her thoughts however around the idea of just how much fixing of plants they would need to do, rather than just clean up, so much so that her wayward pondering ended up spilling over.
You tangle those thoughts any tighter and we could use them as chew toys for the sarane cubs, the agate chuckled after a while, snapping her out of it. (1) Mear: 147 (3/5)

The sphinx blinked, looking up to him in surprise, then a resigned sigh as she folded the paper up once more. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything really in my area of expertise. I don’t mind gardening and it’s certainly gotten easier, but sometimes it feels like I’m forgetting the other skills in the process.
There was a thoughtful rumble from the agate’s side, before he smirked, Well, if it helps, you could certainly try to fence the mud into submission? As practise, I mean. The response was a nudge against his side as the sphinx made a face and smirked.
Were that it was that easy.. And don’t tempt me, I haven’t been doing training in months. A thoughtful pause passed as her brow craned, In fact, if anyone should be flexing on the garden, I feel it’s you. Really command those plants into line.
As they rounded the corner, reaching the front of the store, the agate chuckled, echoing back, Were that it was that easy.

With the store front looming, the two paused in front of it. Well, Darky finally said after a pause, For better or for worse, let’s get down to business. She nudged the agate’s side and the two approached the shop. The shopkeeper wasn’t kidding when they had written about being in a hurry, as no sooner did the sphinx knock on the door that it was apparent to have been closed. The agate pointed out a small note under a rock of a nearby crate, with the apt title “To whom it may concern, regards to the job.”
Darky pulled it from under the rock and unfolded, reading it over. After a few moments of eyes darting across the words, she looked up and to the side of the shop.
I’m guessing we’ve been left to our own devices? the agate wagered.
The sphinx nodded, He had to run an errand, so if we were to arrive before he got back, he said to just head out to the back and begin. Also left a few instructions, but otherwise not much. Mostly minding us to be careful with the begonias.

Mmm, fickle things, the agate nodded, then regarded the rather small gate beside the shop and smiled, Ah, it seems I shall see you on the other side. Taking a mock bow, he jumped up and flew over the fence, to land in the yard beyond, leaving the sphinx to only shake her head with a smirk and follow along through the normal people-sized entranced.
Thankfully the mess wasn’t quite as extensive as the note had made it out to be. Certainly there was mud everywhere and a few places had some flooding or standing water, but by and large what seemed to be even vaguely flower-shaped (especially the begonias) were all secured inside the small greenhouse at the side of the plot. All the same, the rains had still done something of a number and there was a bit of damage to correct as well.
With no time like the present, the two got to work.

Prior to reaching the shop the agate had joked that she had, perhaps, picked the wrong affinity to sacrifice to the gods this time, seeing as making the ground a little shaky wasn’t likely to do much except create a dramatic effect with the puddles. Had she gone for water, perhaps the task would have been as simple as a snap of fingers. It wasn’t, of course, and he was likely to know this better than anyone in the kennel, given extensive practise with the arcane powers of his kind, but the parallel had some ironic merit.
So, instead, it was him who had to resort to the somewhat ‘easier’ option in fixing the area - while the sphinx went around and took stock of what went where and how much damage had been truly done, he focused on the ground itself, placing his hands in as dry of a piece of land as he could find before concentrating. As much was true of what he said - he could not command plants, merely summon arcane echoes of them for a brief time, or lend his energies to existing ones in order to feed their growth.

But he could extend that energy outward to sense where things were. Focusing, he let those energies extend out through the ground, bumping into what once had been before the muds covered things and ruined them. Sufficed to say, what he sensed didn’t give much hope of things being returned exactly as they were, as far too many of the plants had perished under the water and soil. Pulling the senses back, he relayed the situation to the mammalian.
Darky was in the process of cleaning up what she could find, whether it be things blow from shelves and tables by the storm winds or just long forgotten and discarded by years of neglect (And some things where it was a little hard to tell which was which). Cleaning them up by wiping them down the best she could, she placed them back onto where she assumed they were. The shopkeeper would likely need to position them back exactly as he preferred, seeing as they could only guestimate.

With the immediate concern sorted, it was time to deal with the thundergug in the room, or rather, the water. The sphinx stood back, mouth twisting to the side in pensive pondering as she considered their options. Regardless of anything, magic was off the table. Like the agate had jabbed, she couldn’t exactly ‘shake’ the water away, nor wind it (Well, she could try, but it would just splatter whichever fence was facing it and leave them even more things to clean).
She picked up the shovel and began to dig a several thin lines across the yard, avoiding the stepping stone where she could. They weren’t all too deep, but enough to let the water pool into as to leave the surface of the dirt dry(-ish). With the yard in a small natural slope, it slowly began to drain away to the back of it, where it initially pooled before draining out and beyond through the fence.

Well, it’s not pretty, but it will do, she remarked, leaning on the shovel. Now to fix.. Everything else.
The heavy rains had left the ground uneven and between that and the trenches, it was something of a walking hazard, sticky mud aside. So, the two got to work in levelling out the surface as evenly as possible, Darky with the shovel, Mear with his tail. When it came to flattening the bumps near the greenhouse he had to take extra caution to avoid bumping the tail into any of the glass panels. It would not have been a strong bump, but his size meant it didn’t necessarily need to be - glass was glass.
Finding an old wicker-broom, the sphinx even dusted off the stepping stones once they were closer to done, having to unearth quite a few of them in the process since they had gotten buried with the rain.

So far, so good. The two stood back and marvelled at the work completed - everything was level so that it actually looked like a garden and not a battlefield of some sort, the water had been drained so it wasn’t a breeding ground for amphibians anymore and the tools and shelves were cleaned up so they weren’t caked in mud and dirt.
Which was kind of still the problem - as clean as things were, aside the plants in the greenhouse, everything else was just that, mud and dirt. Darky looked to the agate, Maybe you can try doing something about that part? It doesn’t have to be much, just enough to be green.
He considered the field, a rumbled hum sounding. Worth a try, in any case. Just, ah, stand back a little, in case it goes the full summon, he indicated towards the entrance gate. The sphinx nodded, wordlessly backing up as to not get caught up. Spirits know, she’s seen first hand how voracious the plants can get if used in full.

The agate closed his eyes, hands planted against the ground and brought forth that focus of energy in his mind. Shapeless, it flowed through him, and gradually he began to shape it into a coil, a rope, a knot, then many. The ground subtly moved and shoots of plants began to dig their way up, grass and the beginnings of vines, before he abruptly stopped to form the shapes. The growth ceased, enough for some green to poke out from below, though not quite the full verdant extent the growth usually does. Slowly releasing his hold, he observed the plants to ensure they stayed nice and static, before moving to the next area and repeating the same process.
A short while later, the garden was now looking more like it’s intended function. True, while greener, much of the original plants would still need to regrow on their own in order to truly be considered ‘back to normal’, but this was as much as they could do for it, short of turning it into a full-fledged jungle.
So, the two went back to the front of the store and the sphinx scribbled a short reply to the back of the note, leaving it under the rock for the shopkeeper to find - All was well, the work is done and a measure of contact with them should he need it.
