When the holes were filled in, with limited success, Flare rewarded the two with hunks of jerky. Now to get the hand motion down of patting the dirt twice where he wanted her...them, to dig. Pat pat on the soil before him. {Dig here} He had to repeat the motion for both, and both Shabh and the puppy started to dig their respective holes. The rakai's more developed muscles and he swore there were slight webs between his toes served as better spades, but the puppy seemed to be going to town with spraying everything with her wild strokes. Flare could tell Shabh to stop, but he had to pull the puppy away until she got hte idea to stop. She mimicked them both with her attempts of digging. It was fun to dig! Until she reached the point of figuring out when to stop by understanding the pair of them. They dug a hole, filled it in, dug in it again... and over and over again until the sun ducked behind the trees. His muscles burned as Shabh stepped back from his hole, whimpering briefly. He was tired of digging, and his alpha brougth water, food, and added some raw meat into their dishes. {Very good} he praised them, giving Shabh a good ear rub and patting the puppy. She fell asleep halfway eating her food. Tired... Dig 5 9/19 Grendel 41/49 Shabh 3.20

Grendel got to play alone today with him. Although he gave his rakai plenty of attention, the sensation of being linked emotionally honestly carved a slight rift between a man and his dog. That, and the young houlou needed to run off some pent up energy before she actually annoyed her older packmate into chasing her. About the size of a moderately small-medium dog, she wiggled some when placed down on the ground in the running part of the property. Flare himself needed some exercise. The wooden limb's connection to his physical body ached with the cold and he needed to warm up some. and what better then some light jogging. Easing from one foot to the other, the humanish abandoned his sandals. This is where he'd appreciate his thicker foot soles. {Come chase me Grendel} he called to the houlou and started away from her. {Come get me} she left a dust cloud from the takeoff to carren into his shins. Start run

Oh right, thats a thing. Brakes. The ending part of the dash always caught up much too fast for her. But runningg was so much fun! Grendel felt the wind in her hair, her long long hair. In her ears, in her nose, in her mouth as she had run. {Good girl Grendel. Come chase me!} her tailed master went away again, calling her forth. And she answered She loved running. It was the stopping that wasn't so easy. She charged down the straight away of the flat area of home after master, just all out going. And then charged right into his legs again once he stopped. Unlike her, he tired fast. He had to use a fence to catch his breath and not fall down. Grendel could feel her legs and her breath working harder the longer distance she ran. He took off shortly after, calling her to come chase him. 11/23 x.20

Flare had to call it after the third or fourth leg for a few minutes, everything hurt. He wasn't used to running. Hell, he'd never done so as a child. Even a light jog took a lot out of him. He could hear his heart and his blood in his ears as he got his breath back. Beside him, Grendel was panting heavily, her tongue out as she sat there, resting with him. Puppy energy or not, she still could tire from extended exercise. He reached down to rub her head briefly, then once he felt sure that bending down to catch hold of Grendel wasn't goign ot put him out on his head from a drop of blood pressure, picked her up too. {Good girl Grendel.} he patted her head and scratched her ears, tilting his face away briefly when she went in to start licking his nose. It still felt slick. Blech. Putting her back down, he called for hre to come with him, but this time idnd't start running or jogging. They'd just start with a lighter going before going faster. Because thsi would work on his own stamina too. Start Endurance x.20

She had her energy back, thankk you youth, not long later and rushed forward to dance before him, barking happily. Rn with me! she seemed to say with her body language and her barks. The garden wasn't a large enough plot really with open space to do much work on training, and this proved true. Getting the traumatized bird out of her grip to toss it over the fence wasn't an easy task previously, but a distraction of Shabh's favorite treats helped garner her attention and head for the other side of the city. The houlou's pent up energy stores burst forth and she raced ahead of her slower master, ready for another adventure. Right now this was more of an exercise in keeping up and the endurance to keep going. However, Flares endurance was bad. Is bad. Will pretty much continue to be bad. Once back to the start of the training plot, they both got water. x.20

It would be time soon to get her attached to understanding a command for this so she could actually run away from him, and come around back. She understood 'coming back', but they never focused on it. Eager to do something, the houlou danced around his ankles, ready for anything. He had a ball in his hand. One of her favorites that he'd pulled from the toy pile. How did he know it was her favorite? the teeth marks. In his language, 'run along' was too long for a puppy to understand. Pulling back the ball to throw, he called out "Kukipa!" and threw the ball as hard as he could across the yard. Grendel rushed after the ball, her paws pounding the dirt as she sent it scattering behind her. The ball bounced twice before she managed to capture it, worrying it with her face. She rushed back to him and got a treat. "Good." x.20

She's a smart dog, thats a good thing. "Kukipa!" the ball sails from his hand and bounces across the yard. And off she goes. PRobably not understanding the idea of what she was hearing to run around, but he'd get to that. She just had to run for it so far. Right? Wasn't that how training worked? She looked to be getting tired though, and had to be called back with a treat and a calling. With less speed, she came up to him, panting and dropping the ball instead of trying ot keep it from him like previously. "Good girl." she got a treat after laying down for some water. After so many runs, she's got to be hurting about as much as he felt today. Time to go back to the yard and rest the rest of the day away. Which had to be done, for as soon as Flare hit the pillow he didn't remember after that. x.20

A good meal and plenty of rest later helped Grendel recover her boundless energy, whereas Flare believed fully he must have a rock somewhere in the recesses of his barrel bed, because he woke up about as sore as ever before. Thats called lactic acid buildup dear. Back on the ohter side of the fence, he threw the ball with a quick "Kukipa!" and off she went again. Get ball, come back, and get treat. It wasn't fetching becuse he didn't actually want it back, she just brought it back. This time would be a bit of a trick. "Kukipa!" and threw his arm, but no ball. Grendel ran after the nonexistent toss, searching for it, still racing about for it. Where, where did it go? After a good five minutes of searching, Flare walked his way oveer to where his houlou desperately believed there was a ball. "I tricked you" he says wiht a sing song tone. The puppy looks up at him with big sad puppy eyes; she can't find the ball... sad... 12/25 x.20

But where there was a sad, there was a treat not far behind. And an unusual object when Grendel came back to master. A giant ring, nestled in a hunk of wood, wide enough for a small animal to walk comfortably in. He carefully leads her in with the treat, and gives it to her, with head pats and ear rubs. "Kukipa!" he responds as he starts the ring to roll. At first a bit nervous about something moving her without her feet going forward first, the houlou starts walking forward with the gentle happy noises master makes. He's not making the big ring move with his big paws anymore, and Grendel keeps walking. He makes the happy noises and she gets happy too, starting to walk a bit faster. The ring moves faster under her feet, but she's not going anywhere? The ring moves and moves until he catches the ring with a paw and eases it to a stop, rewarding her, and leadnig the slightly dizzy houlou over to water. SPinning in place is no mean feat. x.20

He'd heard of other creatures being able to exercise in one place while in the library, and someone mentioning something about a 'dog sized hamster wheel'. Turns out the object initially had been built for cats. A giant wheel large enough for plenty of running space, and lined with grippiness so the cat didn't fall or slide while running, and could build up a good speed. He suspended a treat just outside the wheel the next time before leading Grendel into the ring for another run around. Her stamina appeared to be improving, but it wouldn't support her when she got bigger. "Kukipa!" The ring starts to roll in place, rattling along in the wooden cradle as the houlou pup ran, snapping at the treat. Out of reach! Just out of reach. Each time she got closer, Grendel leaned out briefly to snap at it, before the wheel forced her attention back inside. x.20

"Good girl Grendel. Easy now." Flare stopped the wheel after a good five minutes of running in place. Grendel tottered out of the wheel after the world stopped moving under her feet, her body still running inside her equilibrium. He held her still, one hand on her chest and just supporting under the front legs as he stroked her back and her head, praising her. Making soft sounds of happiness as he let her regain her proper speed. The little pup looked at him with big eyes and bumped upwards to catch the edge of his chin with a headbutting lick. The running wheel had a splatters of drool on a good portion of the grippiness, and he decided to give it a break. Once Grendel seemed able to not stumble on a few steps, he found her attachment, being the extra portion of Shabh's puppy harness and took her for a short walk. His knees were getting sore, even the wooden one sent up 'ouch'. x.20

Even with a few short jogs, the puppy kept up with her long legged, even if not matched, master. He could do short jogs without finding himself a victim of his clumsy mismatched limbs. The proof was in her stamina increase over the next few days. He tested how long she could endure the wheel. Five minutes, once at seven, but she had to lay down afterwards to regain her 'righted world'. Once, he'd even dropped a pachee onto it, out of curiosity. The poor thing didn't take to the object at all, and fled after the world moved underfoot. Not for everyone huh. Fine. Or just ot introduce it slowly. Between a few sessions during sun up on the wheel and then a good long time of playing fetch with "Kukipa!" for the race forward at breakneck speed, it wasn't really fetch, but Grendel brought back the object anyway, tossing it down at his feet. x.20

"What an interesting choice of running your dog." the Warden commented on one of his weekly passing throughs of the gardens. Since Flare's garden, home and patch were practically connected out here, he knew this was very visible to others. "Does it work?" "Well enough." the humanish commented offhandedly as he pinched off the blossoms on a plant he wasn't quite ready to go to seed yet. Dandilions are pretty but spread their seeds much too quickly for his choice. "Short times." He could hear her harsh breathing as the houlou ran and ran, before getting up and letting the wheel's exterior scrape his hands to come to a slow stop. "Good Kukipa Grendel." the houlou woofed once as she stayed put on the wheel until the feet stopped going forward, and finally hopped down on her own, shaking out her long silky hair before bouncing up on her master's knee, seeking praise. Treats. All of it! /end run, endurance? 13/27 x.20
