Renathan had sort of skipped taking a quest the month previously. He was busy, VERY busy all things considered, and really hadn't had time between his job and taking care of his creatures to go out and do it. So he was relatively ready to take one the beginning of this month, since he had a little bit of time to work on something now. He wasn't sure what to expect, so he decided to bring Auburn this month. She sat on his shoulder chirruping as he made his way to the questing board. What sort of quest would he take this month? Did he feel like doing something relatively domestic, or something more adventurous? He hadn't been on a lot of adventures lately, so perhaps something more adventurous would be helpful in assisting him out of this 'funk', as he had heard the feeling called previously. Yes, funk it was.

If Auburn noticed his 'funk' of slight depression, she did not show it. She was always happy, cheerful and playful, and perhaps that was why he had subconsciously chosen her and bonded with her so tightly. Auburn was a special creature, one of the most special ones in the russet mammalian's life, though perhaps Shy Guy was closer to him. Shy Guy would never have made a good familiar, though. For one he was too large, and for another there was no real reason to make him small. He was a sweetie to Renathan at least, and as fiery and rough as ever to others. No, he would not have made as good a familiar as Auburn, even if he had been possible.
The questing board was generally covered in people, and needless to say, Renathan was not excited about the possibility of having to deal with that aspect. Perhaps he had come early enough in the month to not have to deal with it?

The questing board was not, in fact, covered with people as Renathan had been sure it would have been. He eyed it from behind his mask with quite a bit of wariness. This was not the typical day. In fact, it seemed like there was only one person anywhere near the questing board. Did he recognize this person? It took him getting a little closer to realize that he did actually recognize the elderly lady that was standing there. The panite lady from last year, and it looked like she was still kicking it, too. Well, that was good at least. It occurred to Renathan that he didn't actually know how long the lifespans of various different pethian races were- perhaps he should ask Jack next time he saw her.
Renathan decided that there wasn't anything to be worried about despite the difference in the board this month, and he gave Auburn a pat before stepping up to the board itself.

Before the mammalian could even get to the board, the panite seemed to realize that he was here, and reached out to grab his arm. He looked really concerned for a moment, not stressed that he was grabbed but not particularly happy about it either. It wasn't uncommon for people to reach out and grab someone they needed to speak with, and of course the elder was blind, so he didn't completely feel nervous about it. Auburn looked pointedly at the elderly individual, however- she didn't understand what was going on other than it wasn't completely usual for this sort of thing to happen. At least she had never seen anything go on quite like this! Renathan quieted the izer with a pat, and then glanced over at the older lady. "Hello ma'am." He greeted wanting to make sure that she knew that he knew that she was there. "How are you?"

And that was when the babbling began. Renathan had recognized that the elderly woman was the individual from the year before, the one with the nyssa issue in the gardens. He remembered that she gave away some bonsai at one point. However, he hadn't thought about it in a long time. He sort of forgot about the entire incident. However, it seemed that the nyssa was back, according to her babbling. Renathan couldn't help but give a sigh, as softly as he could but it was probably still audible. He didn't know if he and Auburn had enough time to really take on a big ole nyssa today. However, the elderly woman looked desperate (if not a little bit like she was purposefully hamming it up for the effect) and Renathan decided to take the job regardless of that fact. "Alright, I'll take a look for you and see what I can do." He finally answers, keeping Auburn calm with a pat on the head.

Auburn was much less stressed whenever Renathan accepted the job and then backed away from the woman after gently guiding her hand off of his arm with a gentle pat. She was still going on, which was understandable. Probably didn't get to talk very much at all with others, if she didn't get out often. Renathan, however, was going to have to quickly and immediately go to the gardens if he was going to have any time at all this month to try to get this done. He wasn't guaranteed another day off this month which to run this errand, but he guessed he could try if he had to. "Alrighty Auburn, let's get going." Renathan said softly to the bird, and of course she trilled back at him. They were just that used to one another, after all. They left the questing board, and made their way out towards the direction of the gardens.

Looks like you finally managed to extricate yourself from the one giving the quest! Hopefully you can complete it- or else you might get another earful!

The mammalian was glad to get away from the elderly woman. It wasn't that he didn't feel comfortable with old people, it just seemed that this one was super lonely, or perhaps had some kind of weird plan going on. This seemed too planned out to be real, but then again, Renathan liked to give people the benefit of the doubt, and if the woman was just lonely or something like that, he suspected that she would follow them soon enough. So he would find out soon. Either way, the prospect of earning some more points for the shop or some other kind of reward was a sweet deal, even if he had to sort of hang out with an older person to keep them from being lonely for today. Renathan gave Auburn a pat, and then turned around to go towards the garden. He knew where it was, after all!

Renathan made approximately sixteen steps before he heard the elderly woman call out 'WAit for Meee!' In perhaps the most obnoxious elderly way possible, and Renathan couldn't help but grit his teeth between the mask and stop to give her a wave. He was aware that she was blind, but she seemed to be able to get around well enough, following after him even after he had stopped until she caught up. Auburn looked at Renathan as if to ask 'are we really bringing her along too?' and of course the lady said 'I have to show you the way!' After that. Renathan thought about answering her, telling her that he knew how to get there on his own, but he knew at this point that the elderly lady was really just super lonely, and wanted attention. "Sure ma'am, show me the way." He said, giving a friendly chuckle. It was the best he could do.

The lady seemed to want to take the longest way possible to the garden, and Renathan did the best he could to listen to all of her stories. Since when was he impatient with elderly people? Respect to Elders was taught from a young age where he came from, and he had no issues listening to an elder's wisdom. Perhaps it was because he didn't know the woman well, or perhaps he had just been in the Labs City for too long. Pethia tended to treat it's elderly differently depending on which culture the person was from, but a lot of them tended to have a distinct lack of elderly, or treat elderly somewhat poorly. Renathan was sad to notice that. Had it been rubbing off on him? He hadn't meant to allow it to do so, it was a true mess! Auburn cuddled into Renathan's neck braids for comfort, much like she used to when she was smaller.

The mammalian just hoped that the izer wouldn't try to hang off of his braids like she used to back when she was a jibiji! That would be a huge mess, she was much too heavy now and would probably pull a few hairs out at best. Renathan tried not to focus on this and instead focus on the babbling of the older woman. He gave polite nods at all the right places, reading the situation the best that he could, and gave 'uh-huh's interspersed the best that he could. She didn't seem to mind, and just seemed to be glad to have someone to talk at, so Renathan was relieved that he probably wouldn't be caught. Then again, he had his mask to hide his face and she was blind, so either way she wouldn't be able to tell that he was a little bit unconcerned with her stories. How terrible.

Auburn began singing soon enough, about halfway through the walk to the gardens, and Renathan gave her a soft, gentle 'hush', hoping that she was shush so that it wouldn't seem too rude to the elderly lady. Luckily for Renathan, the elderly woman didn't seem to hear, or perhaps didn't care, so he was fine. Auburn did hush up, though, so that was a big plus. The walk wasn't too bad, other than the incessant talking from this individual that he barely knew. The sun was shining softly, and the wind was gently blowing across the street. The street was busy today; loaded with the last of the winter-harvest headed to the market in buggies pulled by equillion, baakir, and even one by a murp. Renathan didn't see murp-drawn carts often, so he watched it as it went down the road. Wasn't that a dairy murp? He had been wanting to buy one of those, for a long while.

So this was how Renathan made the trip- hardly listening, but being polite to, the elderly quest giving woman, and trying desperately to keep Auburn from giving his disinterest away. He was doing that by making observations on the trip, which gave the illusion of Renathan being interested about something at least through the emotional link that he apparently had with his beloved Auburn. The day was long, but thankfully even though it seemed like the hours would stretch on forever at this rate, there was only a limited amount of time at the rest of the day. However, of course, it didn't even take a single hour to get to the gardens. Of course, the elderly woman's garden was at the far end of the stretch of gardens, so they had some time yet. Thank goodness that it was just about over though, Renathan wasn't sure if he could take any more of the stories.

Gracious, this walk is taking longer than you thought, huh? Hopefully you can find that nyssa soon!

The mammalian hoped that he wasn't going to be given a pop quiz at the end of this interaction in an attempt to test if he could remember everything the woman had talked about after. Needless to say, he hadn't been listening to the best of his ability up to this point. Perhaps she was going to tell him where this big nyssa was? He remembered it being really huge, and well, he wasn't really hearing any of the loud ground-shakes at this time. Auburn didn't seem to be either, and she had much better senses than even he did, to say the least. The mammalian turned to regard the elderly woman with a bit of curiosity, unsure as to what kind of game she was playing. He had clearly heard the giant nyssa the last time that he had to do this job, before he even got to the woman's garden. She had seemed sort of rehearsed earlier... too?
