Fiera hustled down the paved path to the breeding center, panting heavily. The carriers she was holding were heavy in her arms, and also prevented her from checking her phone to make sure she was on time… or not. She was trying her best to get one more breeding done this month, to max out her number of them that she could have for free. Unfortunately, she had left this one a little late, and had to hustle to get her reservation in. Frankly, she only got it to start with because someone else cancelled. This whole breeding was very much being done by the skin of her teeth, and for all she knew it might not even happen. There had been some ISSUES leaving the house, and now she was running frantically late. She didn’t even stop to check the quest board like she usually did, and instead only saw a faint brown blur as she power walked down the street. She couldn’t run after all, or she’d risk damaging the precious cargo she was holding in each hand- or at least risk annoying them more than she already had with her eagerness to get ready for the day.

She knew that for all of the breeding center’s usual friendliness, they were very firm about their time slots. Breeding was a popular hobby, and as a result breeding rooms were in high demand. As Fiera had thought already, she only got this slot as a cancellation- if she couldn’t get there on time, it would end up being given to someone else who was equally as lucky, leaving Fiera as the unlucky schmuck with two armfuls of thoroughly bothered pachee. She breathed heavily as she kept walking, hoping that the sun’s height overhead was just her being paranoid, and it wasn’t actually that late in the day. She could hear the pachee shifting uneasily in their carriers, perhaps picking up on her own stress. “It’s okay, babies!” Fiera said, in the most reassuring tone she could summon in her current emotional state. “We’ll be there soon!” She said, as a half statement, half wish. Of course this was the day when the carriers decided to feel twice as heavy as usual and the breeding center decided to feel twice as far. If she got out of this alive, she was moving closer to this place, damn this long walk.

The first pachee she had with her was Veros Vindication, one of her bat winged pachee. She had proved a fantastic mother so far, and had given her two bat winged babies. The father was Song from the Sky, an ‘angelic’ themed pachee. It was his first breeding and ironically all of his offspring came out demonic looking due to their mother’s influence. Fiera was completely amused by it, and couldn’t wait to see what other offspring the female would produce. She was certainly stunning to look at, with a slick black coat and tan points similar to some forms of houluh that Fiera had seen before. She had a rather air headed personality, but that hadn’t caused Fiera too many problems so far. Breedings were usually short enough that she could pay the requisite attention despite her short attention span. Her most stunning feature though was of course the leather wings upon her back, fully functional and allowing her to fly if she wished. She hadn’t learned how to use them yet, but Fiera had the feeling that that was a good thing. The last thing she needed was more escape attempts from her breeding stock. Managing her pachee was like herding cats.

The other pachee was a new one she had gotten. A gift from Silver, an individual that… well. She hardly considered that sneak a friend, but she had to admit that they were probably the person she had gotten to know best since coming to the labs. Her love of pachee had become quite well known to them, and as a result she had found a custom one delivered to her doorstep one day as an act of kindness. She doubted it at first, but once she took the pachee to the vet and found that it was perfectly fertile and healthy, Fiera was inclined to add it to her breeding stock. As a result, she had dubbed the creature ‘Sunshine State of Mind’ due to his sunny personality. Part of the reason she suspected there might have been something wrong with the pachee to start with was that hardly anything seemed to faze him. No matter what she did, he took it in stride, hardly even noticing bad things. As a result, she had had to rescue him from a couple of bad situations, such as when he tried to stick his face in the toaster. That hadn’t been fun to explain to the vet.

Still, it never put a damper on his spirits, and he was always as bright and chirpy as could be- minus the actual chirping, seeing as pachee were silent. His looks weren’t anything to sneeze at either, being a custom. He had a stunning, glittery body, like scales on a reptile, though his body was otherwise similar to a regular pachee. His belly was pale and white in a classic countershade, and he had brightly colored insect wings on his back instead of the tufts of leaves that pachee normally had. Oh, those wings. They were truly stunning, bright pink with delicate and tiny markings, On top of that, they were just. Covered. In glitter. Honestly, Fiera couldn’t imagine a prettier, more fitting set of wings if she tried. They were amazing and perfect and beautiful and she was going to try and breed them onto as many pachee as she could. Frankly, Sunshine’s wings alone were what was motivating her to complete this breeding. Though… she couldn’t help but think that something was off here. Like she was forgetting something. The berries? No… she touched her hand to her satchel instinctively. They were there, same as always. She would never forget to bring her breeding berries.

But then what was it? Her outfit? She couldn’t help but glance down at herself. Pristine as usual. Hm. She was sure she’d figure it out sometime. She was already rounding the corner to the breeding center, after all. Fiera trotted across the parking lot as quickly as she dared, practically skidding to a stop in front of the doors as she set down the carriers briefly to yank them open. The breeding center looked the same as usual, bright and colorful, but Fiera was hardly in the mood to sightsee or read the new deals pasted up in the windows. She made her way to the front of the reception desk, shoving past several people who had been there longer. “Move, I’m late!” She cried, and was met with several pointedly ignored rolled eyes. Finally she dropped her carriers in front of the desk, pushing a man who had just been about to speak out of the way. “Fiera Ferella, here for my 2:30 appointment! I’m not late, am I? Oh, I know it’s close to the end of the month, but-” “...Close to the end?” said the chagrined receptionist, giving her a strange look. “It’s May 15th.”

Fiera gawped for a moment before checking her phone. Sure enough, the date on it said May 15th. She wasn’t late, and it certainly wasn’t near the end of the month. How could she have been so frazzled? “Oh…” She said lamely, before snapping back to her assertive entitlement. “Well, check me in anyway. My arms are killing me.” She finished, snapping her fingers. The receptionist gave her a withering glare, but tapped in the order on her computer anyway, not wanting Fiera to cause even more of a scene, no doubt. “Here.” The said sharply, handing the humanish her receipt. You’ll be called up in a few minutes. Room eight on the left.” Fiera, to her credit, accepted it graciously. “Room eight, got it. Thank you!” She said cheerily, as if she had never been a problem customer, and dragged her carriers away from the desk so she could settle down in one of the waiting room seats. It looked like she was a bit early even, then! How convenient. She leaned down to speak to her pachee a bit. “Looks like everything’s looking up for us then, eh guys?” She said cheerily, her sour and desperate mood forgotten completely.

She sank into boredom quickly enough though, flipping through the magazines in the front room. Honestly, the labs NEVER had any good gossip. The politicians weren’t scandalous, there were no celebrities to speak of. Really, where was a girl meant to get her daily dose of drama from? She sighed as she set the magazine back down. Fiera was often a dramatic person, but really she was doing society a favor- nobody else here was causing problems on purpose, now were they? Even now, her patience was wearing a bit thin. She had been waiting for- she checked her phone again- fifteen minutes! How barbaric! She leaned down to check on her pachee again, drumming her fingers absentmindedly on her jaw. They looked like they were in pretty good shape. The hustle and bustle had faded, and now they were sitting prettily in their carriers, though Sunshine perked up at the sight of her. She stuck her finger through the bars so the winged pachee could rub against his face against it, which he did with gusto. It was good that they were in a nice mood- hopefully that meant that they’d be comfortable enough to get right to breeding.

But they could only do that once they got into the room, Fiera thought as she gave the reception desk another withering glare. As if on cue though, the receptionist spoke up again, having gotten through the line of people that had been there before Fiera. “Miss Ferella, with Sunshine State of Mind and Veros Vindication? Your room is open.” Fiera was practically up and out of her chair before they could even finish speaking, her carriers scooped up under each arm. “Thank you!” She said in a sing song tone before pushing the swinging double doors open with one foot. Finally! Now they could get started properly. Fiera walked through the sterile, well lit halls, looking for her room. Breeding could be a messy process, after all- it was good that they kept this place so clean. She counted up the room numbers until she finally found room eight. Perfect. She set the carriers down briefly to open it up, shoving each carrier through with her foot. The room looked the same as all the other pachee breeding rooms she had been in, filled with fake plants and rocks surrounded with soil, to give the pachee as familiar an environment as possible.

Fiera nodded her approval and got out the breeding berries. She had a set of three with her as usual, though she wondered if she’d have to restock soon. She had been using a lot lately, after all. Then she got out Veros and carried the wiggly female over to the rock she had set the breeding berries on. “Come on, cooperate.” She said with a sigh, and set her next to them. Veros immediately began splashing through the berries, getting more of them on her coat then she did her feet. Fiera had the feeling that it would still work, but didn’t appreciate how hard it would likely be to get that out afterward. As Veros played with her food however, Fiera went over to Sunshine State of Mind’s carrier and popped that one open as well. Out tumbled the bright green pachee, who immediately made a beeline toward Veros, to Fiera’s relief. The pair seemed to hit it off immediately, pawing at each other playfully and chasing each other around the room. Fiera sat back patiently as they became closer, until Sunshine finally started slapping the ground with his tail. Pollen flew up and Fiera covered her mouth and nose with her shirt as it flooded the air. Instinctually, Veros’s slit opened up in response, completing the breeding. Fiera sighed with relief- another success.
