Another day, another quest. Frankly, last month's quest had taken a lot out of Fiera. She and her rakai sarane had had to run rampant all over some old lady's garden trying to get a nyssa out of it, and had made it out by the skin of their teeth. Fiera's plan to get it out had WORKED of course- her plans always worked!- but it hadn't been the most fun she'd ever had in the execution. Frankly, she hadn't been planning on taking on a quest this month, but her walk had taken her near the quest board anyway. It was hard NOT to look, all things considered. Fiera had gone on a walk today to TRY and bond with the latest addition to her harachiu flock, Langley. They were an acquisition that wasn't a stray for once. Instead, she had snatched the young brownie up from Zoological Imports. Fiera 1 Langley 0.1/0.1 1

For once though, she managed to acquire a harachiu that didn't have some sort of trauma attached to it. Langley certainly seemed BORED at Zoological Imports, but it didn't look like they had been there long enough to have any sort of long-lasting effects from it. Instead, they seemed perfectly curious and inquisitive, exploring the world that they hadn't had the opportunity to before in their life. Fiera was happy to accommodate that and had been buying them plenty of picture books, paper, and pencil for them to play around with. Their attempts were... crude, but it appeared that they were becoming quite the little artist. Well, Fiera decided that today would be the day she'd take them out to get a bit more hands-on experience with the world. She'd write it off as giving Langley some inspiration, but really she just wanted to get the little scrap out of the house for a bit.

The walk to the quest board was pleasant, but Fiera was sincerely hoping that she didn't get roped into another hare-brained scheme. She didn't need to get nearly killed TWO months in a row, especially not while she was trying to show Langley the wonders of the world. As she approached the quest board however she didn't see any particularly upset people standing around it. That was a good sign- it gave her the opportunity to say no for once. She looked through the various papers, but none of them were particularly eye-catching so she just selected one and read it. Meanwhile, Langley attempted to climb her pant leg so they could get a good look as well. The attempt was a rousing success, to Fiera's discomfort. Still, at least this quest she was looking at seemed to be easy enough. Some sort of conservation society was asking for a favor...

She couldn't care less about 'insect conservation' or whatever this thing was asking for, but the lure of quest points and a 'special prize' made this quest all the more appealing for her. Not to mention she already owned a net (albeit for fishing). How hard could catching some glowbugs- glowmoths? Possible be? She plucked the flyer off of the quest board which probably wasn't what you were supposed to do, but Fiera didn't want anyone else getting in on this. This would be her prize and her prize alone. "Come on Langley!" She said, scooping the harachiu up from their position clinging to her shirt. "We've got a quest to fulfill!" She said, laughing and bouncing the harachiu in her arm. They smiled back shyly, clearly not knowing what was going on but not wanting to dispel the good vibes that Fiera was putting out. Surely something good was happening, right?

The quest board wasn't too far from the public park, and to Fiera's delight the sun was setting as they started walking up. That was good- the darker it was, the easier it would be to see these glowing creatures. She glanced at the flyer again to get another look at what these critters were supposed to look like. Augh, that was a terrible picture. She couldn't make heads nor tails of it. Oh well. How different could a creature called a 'glowmoth' look from a regular moth? Fiera stuffed the paper back in her pocket. They were starting to enter the treeline now, with the boughs blocking out what little light was left. Langley pressed themself closer to Fiera, whimpering slightly. "Oh, don't worry." Fiera said congenially. "We'll be fine. A little darkness never hurt anyone, now did it?" She said, just as she stubbed her toe on a root she didn't see.

Fiera hissed as she stopped to rub her pulsing foot, which was made a little more difficult by the fact that Langley was still clinging to her pant leg fearfully. "Let's!" She said, still hissing. "Let's just... keep going, ok? Everything is fine." Fiera said with a chuckle even though her ears were still pinned tight against her skull. She kept walking down the path, but glanced at the flyer again. Unfortunately, it only said that the glowmoths were spotted 'in the public park', with no indicator of where they were specifically or what they looked like. Fiera sighed. Depending on how big these critters were, they would be here for a while. Well, at least Fiera had pleasant (if somewhat spooked) company to search with. Besides, maybe Langley had some sort of sixth sense for these critters that Fiera wasn't aware about and could help her find them faster.

They kept walking, and soon Fiera could hear the faint sound of flowing water. She turned onto a path flowing in that direction and found a bridge standing over a large stream (or was it a small river?) with the water flowing beneath it. It was quite a pretty structure consisting of a cobblestone arch over water with a lamp every couple of feet. She figured that they must have been solar-powered, and were bright and beautiful right now due to the fact that the sun had only just slipped past the horizon. It was quite a soothing sight and Fiera could feel Langley finally, FINALLY releasing their grip on Fiera's leg. "Oh, you like that, huh?" Fiera said, amused. "It's awful pretty, isn't it." She turned to the harachiu who was now looking up at her. "You wanna go look? She said, taking a few more steps toward the bridge.

A small, shy smile spread across Langley's face and they took a couple more hesitant steps toward the bridge. "Come on! It's fine." Fiera said with a smile, only for Langley to bolt past her. "Oh wow! Uh, ok." Fiera said, trotting to catch up. Instead of running onto the bridge though, Langley veered off to the side and began running down the hill toward the water. "Woah, be careful there!" Fiera said worriedly. She didn't think the harachiu was dumb enough to throw themself into a stream, but she could never be sure. Fiera began half running, half sliding down the hill as Langley disappeared around the side of the base of the bridge, running alongside the shoreline. "Langley, slow down! Wait for Fiera!" The humanish called, but she knew that the harachiu likely didn't understand a word she was saying. She didn't hear any response either, which made her nervous.

Finally she got down to the shoreline and looked to her right, hoping to see Langley. To her relief she could still see the harachiu ahead of her, though they were rapidly disappearing into the grass. Ahead of that however, was... some sort of glowing lights in the foliage. Fiera's face lit up with glee. Just as she had thought- Langley had found the glowmoths! She picked up the pace, plowing ahead after her harachiu. Soon she managed to catch up, overtaking the little fairy and skidding to a stop next to the stream when they did. "Okay! Now let's catch... these... moths?" Fiera said as the smile slowly dripped off of her face. There was definitely glowing spots in the grass around them, but based on how still they were... Fiera didn't think that these were moths. Langley still seemed plenty excited about them, making tiny oohs and ahs.

Fiera crouched down next to Langley to see what these glowing things that they were so entranced by even were. They cupped their little hands around them and leaned in close, and Fiera now saw that they were tiny blue flowers that- somehow- glowed in the dark. She glanced back up at the bridge and its solar-powered lanterns and supposed that these were some sort of biological equivalent. They were pretty for sure, but not what Fiera and Langley were looking for. When the humanish tried to get her harachiu to get up to leave though, they refused, planting themself on the ground and not moving unless Fiera went and picked them up. Fiera sighed loudly and sat next to Langley to wait for them to get bored. It had to happen sometime, and when they were done here they could get back to looking for the glowmoths that they were being paid to find.

As it turned out however, waiting for Langley to get bored wasn't a viable option. Langley sat there watching the glowing flowers for ages, and Fiera couldn't convince the harachiu to come away from them, no matter how hard she tried. Every time she tried to give the old "Time to go!" and tried to tug on the back of Langley's shirt, the harachiu would wave their hand at Fiera as if to say "five more minutes!" without even dragging their eyes away from the glowing plants. Fiera sat there with them, but grew increasingly impatient. They were wasting... well, not daylight. Starlight? Moonlight? Something like that. The point was they still had some glowmoths to catch and Langley wasn't helping. After twenty minutes, Fiera had had enough. It was just a plant, and it wasn't even doing anything interesting. It was time to go. Fiera stretched and stood up.

"Alright Langley, we're going now." She said, only for the harachiu to wave at her absent-mindedly again. "Ah yeah, I don't think you understood." Fiera said, looming over the fairy, who was only just now turning around. "We're definitely leaving." Then she reached down and picked Langley up, scooping them into her arms. They didn't like it at all and began wiggling furiously, but Fiera refused to let go. "Nope! We still have glowmoths to find!" She said and began marching toward the bridge again. Langley sighed and after several seconds stopped wiggling. Fiera went ahead and adjusted them into a better position as a reward for their good behavior. They walked over the bridge together, leaving the flowers behind. It was a wonderful night and a nice walk, but they still had the business of their quest to attend to, so they had to let those pretty blossoms fade into the night.

After a few minutes, Langley tugged on Fiera's shirt and pointed at the ground. "What, you want to go down now?" She said, not expecting the harachiu to respond. She knelt down gently and opened her arms, allowing Langley to spill out. From there they walked in pleasant silence- it looked like there was no hard feeling between them and if anything, Langley was a little chagrinned or embarrassed that they had pushed the issue so hard. Still, there were just as many glowing things around them now. The street lamps that lined the larger paths winding through the public park had finally clicked on, illuminating the path that the humanish and her companion now walked on. It was just a beaten dirt path, but its width and the complete lack of grass (not to mention the fact that the engineers had considered it worth lining with street lamps) implied that it was quite popular during the day.

Langley watched the lamps as they watched by them as if in awe, but it was clear that they didn't draw their attention as much as the flowers did. Perhaps the harachiu had more of an affinity for the natural world. Well, if it helped them find the glowmoths Fiera would encourage that affinity as much as they wanted. She didn't see anything yet, but Langley kept lagging further and further behind. Finally she stopped and turned around before walking back over to them. "What is it now? See another flower you like?" She sighed, half annoyed and half amused. As she approached though, Langley grew steadily more frantic and began pointing off the path and into the distance while looking at Fiera. She quirked an eyebrow. "What? What is it? Did Timmy fall in the w-" she said as she followed the line of Langley's finger out into the gloom.
