Nadia was the first to admit that the concept of the breeding centre flustered her. The name alone brought a touch of colour to her cheeks; it was a centre... for breeding. The whole purpose of being there was to promote procreation, and that was something unheard of in her communities, at least for young ladies. To be there alone without a chaperone was a single strike on the list of scandal. The City was different, though. No harm would come to her. Plus, she technically wasn't alone - she had two armfuls of pachee to bring with her! One was hers, and one was not. Leif was the fruit of a previous breeding, done by a friend of hers while she had been otherwise occupied. Jewel was... a gem, if you'd forgive her the pun. He had no qualms about the nitty gritty of the process - all in a day's work for that fae - and had handed over the babies with only a slightly pained look. He was more the orbaru type. Nadia enjoyed them, but didn't own any... perhaps she would ask him to choose a kit for her. When she pushed open the door, she was relieved to find few people around. (1)

Phew. No one she recognised was there - Nadia was glad of that, because her embarrassment was palpable. It was important that she got over that hurdle if she was going to make any progress! A lot of things about the City flustered her. People tended to be more open, more casual about relationships and physicality, with far looser tongues... "Hello, good morning," She smiled, timid, at the receptionist. It was a different person from last time. Still, she forced herself to calm her nerves and continue on, setting the carriers at her feet. "I am here for my breeding-- uh, I mean to say, to breed these pachee... I had a slot for ten o'clock..." Despite her stumbling over her words, the receptionist didn't falter, and was quick to pull up the records so the paperwork could be filled out. Marvellous. Furiously scribbling on the paper gave her an opportunity to regain her composure. Inside his carrier, Leif stepped up to the bars. There were strange smells about this place! He looked around, but all he could see was floor, and-- oh. In the carrier across from him, an unfamiliar face, with her paws folded in front of her. Huh. (2)

It was a relief when everything was filled out. Her handwriting was getting sloppy... her typewriter at home was spoiling her penmanship. Nadia made a mental note to write her next draft by hand to practice. The receptionist, as stoic as they had been in the first place, showed no judgement. Instead, they handed over the key to her given room, and politely gestured to the corridor leading to it while saying the usual professional niceties. "Thank you, very much," She gave a brief bow before she leaned down to pick up the pair of carriers. "I shall return... uh, whenever the deed is done, I suppose... bother. Goodbye..." Her jaw was beginning to hurt with the force of her ramming her foot into it! Why could she not speak like a normal human whenever something sensitive was at hand? Her cheeks burned with humiliation in her walk along the hall. Number 205... ah, just to her right. The key clicked in the lock, and she pushed the door open with her hip after a brief struggle - it was heavier than it looked! Probably to prevent any little critters getting too excited and nudging them open to escape. One could only imagine. (3)

Nadia flicked the light on, and let herself observe the setup. The rooms tended to be plain, but this one... felt a little more homely. It was probably something to do with the knit blanket draped over the couch that had been set up for owners to sit on. It added a touch of the cosy to the space, and she very much appreciated it, given her unease with the breeding centre as a whole. "Alright, little ones, let's see..." She closed the door behind them, flipped the lock, and crouched in front of the carriers. Two pairs of curious eyes stared out at her. "Hello. Now, let me get you out of there for a little run around..." The latches were easy enough to undo, and she opened the doors slowly, trying not to startle them with sudden movements. Leif was rather bold, but she didn't know much about Jungle Jam, the pretty girl she'd borrowed. She was a beauty, though. The pretty pink wings were a delight! "Okay. I shall go and sit down, now," She told them as she straightened back up. "I shan't bother you, or even look at you if that causes a problem. I will let you get acquainted." (4)

In an attempt to give both herself and the pachee as much privacy as was possible in the same room, Nadia had brought a book. It was nothing too strenuous; a paperback mystery she'd picked up last time she'd passed a bookstore. It looked promising. Even if it wasn't, criticising the plot would eat up a few hours at worst. Hopefully they wouldn't have to wait that long. Unperturbed by the new environment, Leif had sprung from his carrier to look about. Hmm. Different than home - he didn't recognise anything except the red woman sitting across the way. One familiar item, at least. He scampered over to give her ankle a sniff, wondering what exactly was going on.. and then remembered. The other pachee! The pretty one, who looked at him! His tail flicked as he made his way back. Jungle Jam was less secure, and was loitering at the door to her carrier, little paws tucked close to her chest. Leif's head cocked to one side. What was she afraid of? There was nothing scary outside. Maybe they'd be able to find something to play with! Silent as they were, there was no way to ask directly if she wanted to have fun, but he blinked, inquisitive. (5)

Jungle Jam didn't seem to want to come out. She watched him, blinking slowly, but made no movement to emerge from the safety of her carrier. Huh. Leif was at a loss - he wasn't sure how to convince someone to play if they didn't want to! He supposed he'd have to make his own entertainment and wait to see if she wanted to join. What to do, what to do... there was a little pet bed nearby, and that looked soft. Leif scurried over to investigate further, and kneaded his front paws into the cushy material. Aaah. Maybe he'd take a minute to rest... Nadia wasn't exactly thrilled to see Leif asleep when she next looked up, but what could be done? She couldn't see Jungle Jam - a bolt of fear ran through her until she realised the door was still shut and locked. Okay. Still in the carrier. That was fine. If it had to be a waiting game, or even if they didn't take to each other at all, that was fine. It was a learning experience. She flipped the page and scanned along, humming under her breath. The novel wasn't as promising as she had been led to believe. (6)

The quiet and stillness lasted maybe ten minutes before a green, speckled head peered from inside the carrier. Jungle Jam must have been bolstered by the silence - knowing that there was nothing out to get her, she could come and take a look around. Plus, the male wasn't bothering her at all. She didn't know how she felt about him yet. She padded out and stood up on her back legs. The strange human, and... there was the male, laying on something very soft looking. He wasn't as intimidating while he was asleep. Encouraged by that thought, she sidled closer until she was practically on top of him, staring down at his sleeping face. Nadia didn't approve of such a thing. Imagine waking up and seeing someone looming over you in that manner? It was enough to scare you into your grave! Still, she said nothing, but exhaled a thin stream of air through her teeth as she flipped a few more pages. The protagonist was beginning to get on her nerves. Suddenly, Leif's eyes shot open. Startled, Jungle Jam stumbled backwards and cowered; rather than being upset, the male seemed excited that she had finally come out to play! (7)

Leif was quick to shake off his sleepiness, both figuratively and literally! When he shook, his mane flopped around his face. Jungle Jam thought it interesting; when she brought her paws up to her head, she couldn't feel that long fur on herself. He was different, and that was new and cool. Happy to be proactive and take the rains, the male bounded over to the small mound of toys left nearby. Some of them didn't have the right smell - he was particular about these things! - and some were the wrong shape, and felt weird in his paws. What did fascinate him was a ball that made a little jingle when he batted it with a paw. Ah! He stared for a moment, then scooted it over to her. Nadia peered over the top of her book as they began to play, cat-like, with the little belled ball. They were rather feline! Though Leif was obviously the initiator and the confident one, she was happy to see their visiting friend coming out of her shell. The more passes of the ball were made to her, the looser and more comfortable she seemed to be. It wasn't so bad being there after all! (8)

In fact, Jungle Jam was beginning to think it was good, being in the room with Leif. He was handsome, there was no doubt... and he was interested in her! He hadn't run away once since they'd discovered the toy. She liked that about him. The human in their space was forgotten about in favour of their own interaction. Nadia had less shame in watching pachee and their rituals. They were hardly... animalistic; though the opening of the slit in the female's forehead was alarming when one was unprepared to see such, it was a very proper way of creating offspring. None of the carnal behaviours of humans or other species. Orbaru were apparently much the same, with a muted display. She appreciated not having to stew in her own shame. Orbaru were Jewel's speciality, though. She adored them, but found they suited him better - she was more drawn to pachee, their quietness and their connection to earth. Watching Leif sidle closer and bat the ball aside, forgetting their game, had Nadia surpressing a little giggle. Very forward of him to assume! Jungle Jam was receptive, though. She had stopped looking at their toy a long time ago in favour of staring at Leif. (9)

Nadia would give them the privacy to go the extra mile. Though not enthralled by her book, she pointedly turned her attention back to it - they weren't acknowledging her existence regardless, but it made her feel better to know she was putting in the effort. Like a child, she waited with barely disguised excitement to see if there would be success. It would seem luck was in her favour, because before long, she heard the 'thump-thump' of Leif's tail against the floor. Unable to keep from peeping, she took a look in time to see Jungle Jam's forehead slit open. Gosh, it was unnverving. Even as thrilled as she was to be witnessing a successful partnering, it still weirded her out slightly to see it open and close. Oh well. It would become normal to her over time if she continued pursuing pachee. All done, and with little ceremony! The two pachee curled together, Leif's chin resting on the top of Jungle Jam's head. How sweet. Sooner or later she would have to usher them back into their separate carriers to go home, but she left them for the moment to enjoy each other's company. They had just created a life or two, after all. (10)
