She was still holding the jar he had given her, with the second moth he had caught trapped within. The glow it emitted was weaker now, maybe dampened by the revelation that it had been trapped. She stared at it for a moment, then followed in San's wake.
He watched the trajectory of her flight, but she caught him at it, and blinked questioningly at him. "Is it heavy for you?" he said, eyeing the jar. It was glass, after all, and Rei was small enough to begin with. But Rei shook her head and flew onward, so San let her be. If she wanted to hold onto it, there was no harm in it; and if she got tired, he would carry her home. He could do that now, without having to worry about how it would look, or if someone else would become concerned that Rei wasn't able to pull her own weight.

That sort of thing shouldn't have felt like the luxury it did, but... When he thought about how most of the Harachiu there had probably never known anything like that, it hurt, a little. At least, he hoped they didn't. The two they had met had seemed more or less like ordinary people at the time. Maybe in time, Rei would be like that too. Or maybe she wouldn't.
The two of them arrived home, and San deposited the jars on their tiny windowsill, before preparing to go to bed. It felt like a token effort at this point, since he didn't know if he would be able to fall asleep, but Rei would be concerned if he stopped even trying to sleep at a reasonable hour. He could sense rather than see her watching him as he brushed his teeth and washed his face, though the presence disappeared as he changed into his nightclothes.

They would go to the conservation society in the morning... There had been an address on the note. San ran over it in his mind mechanically as he laid in bed, out of habit. It was what he had done with mission details and gathered information when he had still been working for the Watchful Ones, a litany of changing details that were learned, remembered, and then forgotten again.
Overhead, he heard the ever so faint rustle of wings as Rei settled into her own sleeping arrangements, and breathed a little easier. Roku hadn't been home when they had gotten back, but that was hardly unusual. The cat kept to his own schedule, and San was content to leave him to it.
And despite everything, San found himself drifting off after all, lulled by the scent of summer night drifting in through the window, and the soft and distant chirping of the crickets outside.
