'Never' was a little harsh, but Nadia was feeling disgruntled. Just as she would get in range of her rod, it would bob a bit further downstream, leading her off further into the mud with her bare feet. Hoisting Mabel while she went was a solid workout, too. There would be soreness in the morning. "Easy, easy-- ah!" The dirt crumbled under her feet. As she reached for the rod, she lost her footing, and tumbled into the water, Houluh and all. "Oh no! Ow!" She was grateful it was just the shallows, and even more grateful that Mabel wasn't hurt. Quite on the contrary; the puppy had begun lapping at the water, fascinated by the new taste. It tasted like outside! "... Hang this day. Hang it, hang it-- oh, the rod..." It lay hooked on a rock next to her. The woman scowled as she picked it up. "I hate you." [13]

Well, at least it hadn't gotten away from her. When Nadia looked back through the strands of hair that had gotten stuck to her face in the run, she realised they hadn't gone far at all. Good grief. She needed to work out more often if such a short stint had gotten her out of breath. "Alright. Back over there for us. Immediately," She said, and even though neither the houluh nor the rod would respond, she left no space for argument. "So wet... thank goodness it's a nice day. I hope I'll dry out..." Getting up with an armful of Mabel was an additional exercise. Her clothes dripped as she waded her way back up onto the bank - at least her previously muddy feet were clean by the time they hit the grass. The puppy's tail was still wagging, thrilled by the chase they'd experienced. What a great day! [14]

The picnic blanket looked like the softest thing in the world. Nadia sagged down on it with a sigh - she tossed the line back into the water haphazardly as an afterthought, just in case anything should think to bite. It was unlikely, considering the utter rumpus they'd caused. Fish for miles around had likely fled in terror. Perhaps the net would be more lucrative. At least she'd have full control over it, and was less likely to lose it to her puppy's whims. Mabel was happy to sniff around in the vicinity for the time being, but who knew when her young impulses would lead her astray? Oh, it was her own fault, for bringing a baby to an area such as this. "What do you think, Mabel? Hm? A little longer and we shall call it a day," She said, glancing sadly down at her damp clothes. "I have had enough adventure." [15]

Who had written that fishing was meant to be relaxing? Nadia disagreed. Or, rather, there should've been an addendum - it was perfectly relaxing if you knew what you were doing and hadn't been short sighted enough to bring a puppy along. All Mabel wanted to do was play, but that wasn't conducive to the activity. Speaking of which, she had gotten thoroughly interested in Nadia's bag. There was a small pouch of treats inside that hadn't yet been utilised, and she was hungry. Napping and being carried worked wonders on her appetite! The houluh pulled them out and shook them, rustling the pellets inside. "You know what you want, don't you?" The woman teased. Her hands were gentle when she went to take the pack from Mabel's mouth, but she wasn't going to give up on retrieving them without success. "Let me have this. Mabel-- the sooner you release it, the sooner you can have some." [16]

Puppy teeth were awfully needle-like. Nadia winced as one caught against her finger, but was pleased to finally prise the packet of treats from Mabel's mouth, even if the houluh growled in childish protest. "Yes, a terrible life, I know," She nodded as she tore the packet open. Mabel was immediately fascinated, pressing her snout into the plastic; the woman had to turn her face away as carefully as possible to prevent her eating the whole bag. "Wait for a second. Patience and virtues and all the like." Her motivational speeches were lowering in quality. It was due to being soaked through, she was certain. At last, she relinquished a treat to the houluh and watched as she chewed it up. It was fascinating, how quickly houluh could do away with food if they were so inclined. Maybe she should attach one to her fishing rod and see if that brought in the fish. [17]

The day was starting to heat up, and Nadia was starting to dry - and tire - out. It seemed a shame to give up on her attempts so early, but she felt like cutting her losses was the best idea, especially if things were going to continue to spiral out of control. At least she'd had a little bit of bonding time with Mabel, gotten familiar with the area, and picked up a few shells for her trouble! "Another? Another," She said, picking out another treat for Mabel to chew up. The puppy did not hesitate, and munched away with vigour. "Very good. I suppose your training will be simple, if you are as food orientated as my other pups." A tug on the rod had her head shooting up. Nothing to note, by the looks of it; just being snagged by a rock or seaweed or... something. Not seaweed in the river. [18]

Or did it grow in the river? Damn, Nadia didn't have a clue. It was those kind of questions that kept her on her toes and ready to learn more! There'd be books on it somewhere-- Ah. Or, she could stick her head under the water and find out herself. But that was a tad too adventurous after a chaotic day. She'd leave the rod for a few moments while she got herself ready to retire. Her feet had to be washed in the river once more and dried against the blanket before she pulled her socks back on, and she shivered by the time they were clean again, chilled by the water. Gosh. Her foot spa at home was a far preferential method of cleansing. The boots came on afterwards, while she took another cautionary look at the rod, ensuring that it didn't get lost downstream again. What a nightmare. Mabel, on the other hand, was still in great spirits. [19]

She hadn't used the net! Nadia stared at it with dismay. How could she have brought it all the way down here and then left it on the side like an idiot? Mabel had found better use for it and had started chewing on the wooden pole. "Oh, darling, please," She tried to coax the puppy away lightly while she began folding up the blanket. "You will get splinters. Come away, now. Here." Another treat as bribery. She was able to snap the rod up with Mabel's back turned, and hoisted it over her shoulder, along with the rod after she'd reeled it in. It hadn't been greatly successful, but it had been... an experience, to be sure. Her clothes were still damp. When she began the walk back, she felt them sticking to her skin, and grimaced. Oh well. "Next time will be better, Mabel, I swear. I will learn. Somehow." [20 - End]

Something's on the line! It tugs and tugs and tugs. It feels like it's going to pull the pole right into the water with it. The water ripples ferociously with movement, stirring up mud and making it impossible to see the catch.
That is, until there was a sudden snap. One end of the line swims away and the other dangles miserably from the end of the pole. Well, that was unfortunate. Now the pole has to be restrung, ugh.
