Current Quest
He knows it has been a while since he went out with Dysis, the opportunity for it hasn’t really come along that much, but when he picked up the newest money making mission at Quest Central, he feels like this one is just perfect for the two of them. She is a moth type of Vespa after all. And maybe she can somehow help attract those moths to her? He just needs to make sure she is kept full of treat in order to not even think about eating the moths though. ‘ Which should be easy with the meat I packed for her just incase.’ He smirks while stroking her back carefully, gaining what sounds more like a chirp then her usual trill of contentment from her. He’d fed her some treats twice now while on the way to the public park. He is kind of glad for having chosen to go close to sundown as with them being moths, it stands to reason they are more active at night. And with what he has stored inside his backpack, he’s certain it will help all the more to try and find them at night. He just hopes to not encounter a lot of fireflies as well. That would be kind of a downer. Dysis LV 15.1, LY 37.2 (1)

He frowns slightly at one of the streetlamps they pass, its light keeps flickering compared to the others, its slightly distracting him as he does see insects fluttering around it, but he doesn’t think that those ones are the type he is looking for, none of them seem to glow. “We are almost there Dysis.” He says, pleased at seeing the sign that indicates where the park entrance is. Just five hundred more meters, and then he needs to find a good spot to set things up fast before it gets completely dark, but he has a feeling he might already be too late for that hope to occur. He does have a handheld flashlight with him, but the bigger light in his backpack would be much easier to set up while he still has some light. At least, with how late it is getting, not many people or creatures are on the road. He easily quickens his pace without needing to make wide berths around anyone, though he can tell Dysis is slightly surprised by his walking pace getting faster as she grips on his shoulder a little tighter so that she doesn’t fall of, he can feel it even through his long coat. The curious tone of her trill also gives it somewhat away that she is surprised. But he did say to her already that they are getting close, so he isn’t interested in giving his reasons for it when it should be obvious why he is walking faster.

She should already know it. She’s smart enough in his opinion. Even if she tends to act foolish (and makes her just a little bit dimwitted in his eyes) when it comes to her hunger. The number of times already that she is more interested in acting out, just to get that tiny bit more food in her mouth are numerous enough. Though, even with food constantly plaguing her mind, he is still somewhat surprised by how much she was actually able to eat when she went with him to the mansion, he can somewhat still remember just how much she feasted back then. And he can tell anyone who’s interested, that for one of her size? It was a LOT of food. And that was just the start of him getting drunk on the alcoholic beverages they got there as well in that month. Most of the events happening later are too hazy to remember after he started drinking, but that part of the food and her? He remembered that quite well.
Around three minutes later he sees the entrance of the park. It was really just a very large opening in the gates, with at the sides a sign that indicates the name of the park, and some minimal rules to follow. Like cleaning up after yourself. Not even foreigners should be surprised by the appearance of it being so minimalistic, since it is quite known how large the creatures living in the labs are. And Thundergugs for example, aren’t all that inconspicuous when it comes to their size. Lips quirking up, he finds that while the paths of the public park don’t have as many streetlights to light the way, it is enough that he can easily follow the main road and notice just how very few people are occupying the grounds compared to the morning or middle of the day.
It might even be possible that some of the people here, few as that there may be, are like him, in being that the only reason he is here, is because of the quest with catching moths. He frowns a little as he starts noting just how dark it is becoming when looking for a path away from the main road that seems to be the only one containing some streetlamps to light the way. And with how much darker the environment is getting with the sun going down, that is rapidly increasing by the minute. “Trrr..” Dysis trills softly, creeping closer against his neck to lean on. He wasn’t certain what she was nervous about, they have been to places before that where rather dark as well after all.

Still, feeling her warmth even better against his neck made him start sweating just a bit. The air isn’t as cool as it was previously a month ago. Taking out of his pocket a small meat treat, he fed it to her, and hears her trill in happiness a little too well with how near she is to his ear, but the fluttering of her wings caused the wind to be blown in all directions, which felt nice, but still wasn’t cold enough to combat the warmth she exudes out of her whole body. “This might be a good spot right over there.” He murmurs softly to himself as the main road branches out and he sees just barely a park bench made out of iron and painted a dark green color at one of the paths to the left. Which with it getting so dark he needs to squint with his eyes to see anything past five meters from the streetlights, makes him wish that they had chosen a different color to paint it in.

Holding his arm left arm to his right shoulder where Dysis is on, he fetched with his right a small treat, and holds it just far enough out of her reach that she crawls on to his arm willingly. “Good girl.” He compliments her, as he knows if she wants to be difficult with moving of him, her legs are strong enough to make it difficult for him to get her loose without injuring her in the progress. “Trrr!” She says the moment the meat treat is close to her mouth, nibbling on it so quickly that it is gone within seconds, and begging for more with the trills she makes. “Soon Dysis, just let me set things up first.” ‘I wonder at what point she won’t mind not getting food for the smallest of things I want her to do. This feels like it is getting ridiculous.’ Walking to the park bench, he deposits her on it, laying another treat near her much to her joy, and starts the progress of taking off his backpack and taking out the medium sized flashlight first from the second smallest pocket, clicking it on and putting the end part in his mouth so he can better aim it at the inside of his backpack. Opening the largest pocket, he zips it open all the way in order to take out a modified bug zapper that would have just enough electricity in it to stun insects, but not enough to injure them. The Labs City Insect Conservation Society wanted live specimens, not death ones after all.

Turning it on, he has to squint his eyes when looking at the sudden bright blue light coming from it, the humming noise also indicates the electricity is working thankfully. He’s got another packet of batteries should the ones he has inside of the machine stop working, and hopefully he’ll only need to do it once should that occur. The shape of the bug zapper is elongated with a handle on top that he could let it hang anywhere he wants. He muses that while it is not the biggest bug zapper around, this one should still work perfectly fine in getting the attention of the Glowmoths and hopefully catching them. He takes out a transparent plastic jam jar, with a lid he could remove by unscrewing it to open, or clicking open the small door in the middle of the lid. Tiny holes or perforated on the sides of the jar for air. He had been busy making something like this in the middle of the day after grabbing this mission, thinking it would be perfect for insects. And with it all cleaned up, he certainly hopes it will. “Bzzp!” “Trrriiii!!” He flinched at the sudden noise from Dysis, turning his head, and thus the flashlight still in his mouth at her, combating the unnatural blue light with the warm yellow of the torch. “Hmm?!” He says questioningly as he sees her tending to one of her front paws and crawling away from the bug zapper. It didn’t even take a second for him to figure out what happened.

‘Well.. At least I know it works.’ He thinks without feeling much humor in Dysis attempt of getting closer to the light. Taking out the flashlight from his mouth, he puts it down on the bench, and grabs the bug zapper, deciding to hang it on the low branch of a tree on the opposite side of the bench but still pretty close to the path. Not many insects where swarming against it yet, and hardly any that he would consider moths, but that should change soon. Going back to the bench he calmly strokes Dysis on her back for a little ibt, hoping she would find comfort in it. ‘Food?’ He rolls his eyes when he hears her asking for that, taking his hand off Dysis, not surprised in the least. Rather, he’s more wondering why she hasn’t been asking for it much earlier on the trip, even with the treats. ‘You’ll get fat Dysis.’ Though he has yet to see her size increase in that way, it can still happen. ”Triii!” She doesn’t even sound offended at the notion in the least. “In a moment then.” He decides as he moves his backpack closer to him, and grabs the flash light, aiming at the backpack so he can see what he needs to grab from it. He takes out three of the last items he brought along for this trip. Two thin but large white sheets, and next a small bug net to capture the insects that fly against the sheets instead of the zapper itself. Laying them both on the bench for a bit, he then takes out a plastic wrapped package, opening it and laying it near Dysis body and away from the sheets. ‘Food, food!’ He hears her in his head yell to him in excitement. It was just a small hunk of raw meat, but apparently she likes to eat it that way. Somehow finding the meat juices even more delightful from it, then just plain old meat treats,

With Dysis cheerful noises of eating the meat, and trilling in delight, he grabs the white sheets and hangs it on the branches around the bug zapper. It makes things look a bit too earie for his taste, but he knows this method should work in catching the attention of many different types of bugs. Next, he grabs the jar and clicks it open, dropping it in his coat pocket that is barely large enough to fit it in. Taking the flashlight for just a moment, he turns it off so the only light one can see with, comes from the bug zapper and the earie blue white sheets and places the torch back on the bench. Grabbing the small bug net by the handle he walks back to the sheets, glancing only once or twice at Dysis direction while she continuous to feed from the hunk of meat that is slowly starting to become smaller. If he’d ever go to the vet with her to figure out just how quick she is with digesting things, he wouldn’t be surprised at all if she is noted to have a fast working metabolism. Still, feeling like he is getting a bit too distracted with the sight of her eating meat, he starts to focus on the sheets. Lips quirking upwards whenever he sees a moth, he can catch in his net, and put in the jar, or study the ground for the insects that got stunned by the bug zapper. Taking only those off the ground that looked anything remotely like a moth or butterfly in shape. The grainy picture of them really wasn’t all that clear for what he is looking for, so hopefully he’d be able to get at least a few of the right ones amidst the rejected types.

When he is able to fill the jar to about a quarter, he stops collecting more from the ground and sheets with his bug net, instead, he walks back to the bench just as Dysis is finishing up with eating the hunk of meat he had provided for her. “Trrii?” She trills in a questioning as she tilts her head just a little to the side, her antennae twitching as she sees him come back with the bug net and jar of insects. He didn’t doubt for one minute her attention is mostly focused on the jar with insects, it is just as much a food source to her as meat and fruit is, just in second or third place when it comes to a preference. “Hmm?” He hums at her as he settles down on the bench, away from the remaining package where she ate the meat, setting the bug net down he grabs the flashlight and clicks it on.

The blue light doesn’t exactly give a clear view on what their coloring is like, but the warm white light of the torch is perfect for this. He ignores the scurrying noise Dysis makes as she comes closer while he is studying the inside of the jar. Those caught with the bug net are fluttering quite a bit inside it, but the ones from the bug zapper are still merely twitching. He just needs at least one or two of them to glow up in someway to make sure he actually got the ones he wanted to grab. Than he can release most of them again, and those more dead then alive.. They could perhaps become food for their bigger pseudo cousin. He eyes Dysis for a moment in curiosity as he feels her climbing on his side, and then moving on top of his left arm closer to the jar. Her presence on his arm feeling warm from the constant low level of heat she emits.

“They aren’t going to be your new food source Dysis.” He lies, well, sort of. He is not certain yet if any of them are the ones he is looking for, and the lively ones will just be set free in the end. “Trii!” ‘Food! Mine!’ He would have snorted at hearing her thought about it if he didn’t find that there are other ways to show his annoyance with her presumption about it. ‘Just for that, I think not giving you any of them is the best. You don’t demand Dysis.’ He didn’t mind if she tried cajoling or begging for it, although the latter if she somehow makes it sounds demanding she can forget all about getting anything of the sort from him either. Though he is not certain if she gets what he is hinting at, he knows at some point she would learn it in some way. She is smart enough, it is just her obsession with food that can get in the way sometimes.

She didn’t say anything in his mind for the next few minutes, mostly just twitching her antennae in the direction of the jar, still curious or more likely, hungrily looking at the moths. He does eventually start to see at least two of the insects in the jar seem more unusual then the rest, and slowly recovering from being stunned by the bug zapper. Turning off the flashlight, he blinks his eyes to adjust again more to the blue glow from the white sheets in the dark of night where many different insects are fluttering against, and if he ignores the constant zapping that happens when one of the insects hits the bug zapper just to be closer to the light source, well, he could say it is almost a peaceful night with a different buzzing going around. Two tiny, no it is three tiny glows from the jar makes him feel satisfied with the night activities he did. Turning on the flashlight when he memorized where the glows in the jar come from, he finally sees which ones he needs to keep.

He did noted before that two of them looked unusual, though it is mostly that the back part looked strange compared to the rest, but now that it is confirmed to be some kind of glow moth, he finds that having more insects be zapped even after having come what he came for is rather distasteful. So with a heavy sigh, he sets down the flashlight on the bench, carefully picks off Dysis from his arm, and settling her next to the torch much to her dissatisfaction if the shrill trills she emits is anything to go about it. He stands up and drops the jar carefully in his pocket to keep it safe from Dysis and her obsession with all kinds of foods, he sets about taking off the white sheets from the branches, shaking each one a couple of times to get rid of most of the insects, and then folding it to be placed on the bench, any insects still on it are being preyed on by the little miss who can’t stop eating.

Squinting at the bright blue when all the sheets are taken off the branches he does the same to the bug zapper, being careful to not step on the twitching bodies down below. Its not his fault if those tiny brains of theirs can’t understand that a light source can be dangerous too. Coming closer to the bench again, he can even more easily see what Dysis is doing. Almost like a jumping spider she used a weird white substance on her front legs to quickly snatch any remaining insects close to her on it, and weirdly enough they stay stuck on it as she continues to make grabbing motions, not stopping with doing it until she has quite a bit of them stuck to her and starts chewing on them. Wrinkling his nose, he shoos Dysis off the sheets as he sets the bug zapper on the ground. Last thing he wants is for her to get zapped again because she might feel ‘compelled’ to get closer to the pretty light. Though, he hopes she learned the first time how bad of an idea that is.
