A new tournament had come around, and this time a previously trained creature could not enter. That wasn't too much of a dilemma for the young man since he didn't have very many battle-ready animals anyway. He wasn't the most experienced with training of that sort...in fact, it still sort of intimidated him. He peered over the list of acceptable species and breeds to choose from to adopt with the intention of training to fight. Most of them weren't his fancy at all - but he knew that was the point of the specialized tourney. The officials wanted to challenge people to work outside of their usual comfort zones. Do something new. Work with a different species. He could have gone down the Mosca route, being similar in form and attitude for the most part to his favorite, the Malii - but that was too obvious. He wanted to participate in the flavor of the season. 1

However....he didn't exactly have everything to give to the idea. Training would be, well, annoying. He didn't even bother training his favorites yet - something new and unfamiliar would be down right offensive to some of his more loyal specimen. And there was a difference between doing something unfamiliar and something he didn't like. One could be fun. The other would just be tedious. Boundaries...he could work this.
Amphadron.....the magic was cool, but the water was not. He didn't feel like needing to anti-growth something and sit in a giant tub with it until it grew back loyal to him. The thought made him shudder. Ghaenelt......too spiky. Murp? Too bulky.
Equillion. Hm.....He had never bonded with anything equine before, but he liked the elegance and elemental affinity of the Equillion Version 2. He knew the original was a very popular species that pumped out of the labs, but he hadn't jumped on that bandwagon.

He studied the breeds available and compared them to the other species and their breeds. He liked the softness of the water-horse variety. And its potential seemed promising as well. The fiery one also seemed nice, but he knew any other water species in the tourney would spam those types of moves, which the blue male could easily shake off.
His decision was made. He sent a letter to one of the officials for the tournament and set his pre-application in motion to work with. The same day he went to the labs and requested one of the creatures he'd chosen, and they suggested a docile boy. He was introduced to the creature, a bit taller than himself, and Riku was notably skittish. He'd studied Equillion and knew they weren't necessarily aggressive unless provoked - and this one was described as friendly and perfect for a beginner....but his instincts were still inflamed.

He made sure to keep a distance from the soft beast, whose eyes were large and wide - a pleasantly green hue when the rest of him a bright blue. He had a long and sharp dark colored horn that was probably about a foot long - Riku immediately imagined himself being impaled with that by accident. He sure hoped the animal was aware of its own body....if it thought it was smaller and weaker than it was, it could be a disaster!
Maybe that was why he didn't have horses? It was that he didn't like them, in fact he'd always quite respected them from a great distance. However, their size and power - and lack of cunning - strongly deterred him. Riku was used to being the large creature in the room - and when he wasn't, he was used to fluffy beasts that would let him hug them if he wanted because he was master (or a respected 'relative' of sorts.)

The creature seemed to be aware of the human's fear, but was considerate. That showed awareness and compassion that allowed the boy to feel less threatened...perhaps they could have a pleasant friendship after all. Maybe this could even start something more along the lines of his equine affinity.
It exhaled in an unexpected burst, naturally, as Riku reached his hand out and too gently slid it down along the front of the equillion's head. Riku's heart was racing, and at the sound he shot his hand back, but then quickly realized it was just breathing.
The labs worker chuckled at the encounter and asked if he was good with the adoption or not. Riku reluctantly nodded and watched as the man walked away for a second. His heart raced. 'Don't leave me alone with it!' he thought, but tried to stay calm. This would be his 'pet' after all...he needed to get used to it.

The man came back with some paperwork, most of it being pre-filled from Riku's account being on file. He simply had to sign. "And what do you think you'll be naming this beaut?" the worker asked before they loaded him onto the trailer to be hauled to Riku's kennel.
He thought for a second, staring at the large and promising beast. Smiling, he proudly said "I think I'll call you....Poseidon."
The man rolled his eyes. "Original." he snirked, but Riku didn't care. It was his creature, and his first ever equillion. So what if the breed was already called Poseidon? It was a great name for him! "Y'know, since you're adopting him for the tournament, I know someone who'd be willing to train him up for you a bit."
"Really...?" he asked, "That would actually be really helpful. I wouldn't even know where to start with this guy...I'd probably be too scared to teach him to use him power around me. What if he got mad, y'know?"
-
For the next three weeks he went out to his kennel daily and fed and looked after the equillion. Always starting off with his name to get him familiar with it, and then going about his equillion chores to bond.

A month after adopting, and the creature had been sent back to his kennel from the person who had been battle training him for the last week. The report said it was successful for both Buck and Horn Strike on command. Goodness, this was exciting! He was so proud of the lil- er....big guy, for having accomplished this. He wondered how much he had bonded with the trainer, and hoped it wouldn't get in the way of their relationship. He felt uncomfortable dominating another creature and preferred a mutual respect based on mutual self-interest and a growing bond over time....but that wasn't exactly an option here.
Equillion were an average animal's cunning, so they couldn't comprehend as much as a Malii could. And they definitely weren't sentient - but that didn't mean they weren't smart. He could tell it had a soul and compassion. He could see that it was aware. It eyes studied him as he approached, and it came to the edge of the fence.

"Hello, Poseidon." he said warmly, his voice a bit higher than he would use with people. He cautiously raised his hand with the wrist limp and the palm open so the animal could see he wasn't holding anything or winding up to harm it. Clearly he still didn't exactly know how to act around an Equillion. It sniffed his hand, and Riku hoped it wouldn't take a nip out of his fingers. "Hi there......You happy to see me, Poseidon?" he asked rhetorically.
He opened the gate and walked into the fenced area of the stable. The creature watched him as Riku gently placed his hand on its front shoulder and slid it across its back as he walked around it carefully. He gave note to the second set of front legs, wondering if the forward-most could be used for a frontward kicking while the middle would keep balance. Perhaps they were exceptional for climbing...?

"Good boy, Poseidon." he said, grateful that the beast was being so calm and gentle with him fragile heart. One overly excited movement, and Riku would be out of there!
The back legs were very strong. Much larger muscles than in the front two sets. He very carefully walked around the back and to the other side, as to avoid being kicked for whatever reason - he was scared and still learning t trust this big guy. For all he knew, he didn't even need a reason to attack. Although, it did seem particularly fond of him already. It was a usual affect with animals around Riku.
"Okay, Poseidon. Let's put your training to use." He brought him over to a stack of hay, putting his hand on the side of his neck to guide him - surprised it actually worked. He angled him so that the hay was behind him and said "Poseidon, Buck!"

To his surprise, the equillion quickly shot its hind legs back and knocked the hay pile over. Much of it flew into the air, and Riku smiled as he stepped back in slight terror. "Good boy, Poseidon!" the creature exhaled sharply and took a few steps in place to calm itself and center its balance as Riku rubbed his head and neck. It seemed to like that, staring into Riku's eyes (who very hesitantly allowed his own to gaze back for more than a second.) His long black lashes flicked now and then.
"Good boy, Poseidon..." Riku said again, leading his to turn around to face the leftover hay that was still standing upright. "Poseidon, Horn Strike!" he commanded, and the equillion took a second to process and then jerked forward with its head down and plunged its long horn half way into the stack of hay.
"Good boy, Poseidon!" he exclaimed. It seemed his investment had paid off very well. And seeing the animal's power, he was excited to see how the tournament would go. "Good boy, Poseidon."
