"My... studies were about botany mostly. But on the side, I studied how to talk to people. How to... get what you want ot know from them without causing any harm. One of the texts I read as a boy had a sentence that I recall... the pen is mighter then the sword. For someone like me, that couldnt' be more true." The chaos creature nods as they head for the harbormasters office. "Its not a complete lie... I am interested in the books, that if they have any written in Tumai. And what that special book is." "I suppose so..." Loki sighed. They entered the harbor's office. The harbormaster was... a pelican avian. His enormous beak pouch draped over a portly self. His wingtips, must be functioning as fingers, laced together as the boy answered. "Ye looking for that book ship, right?" the big bird asked. "Yes, I am." the fish hovered outside of the door, confused. What was this portal? 16 x.20

"Buzzin beast is going to be gray feathers for me." the pelican sighed, his exhale inflating his pouch briefly. "You're not the only kid who's coming down to look fr that ship. The book brothers is been in and out of my office all week. Few flunkies interested in the muscle... my god it's a not fun week." he leaned back in his chair, the flap of his beak flopping over again. "So the ship everyone seems to be trying to get at is in the middle of hte harbor. Don't break things. And don't get anyone killed." He waved them out. "Helpful all aorund, that bird." Loki remarked. Grumbling, Flare just walked up the dock. He had a few problems. Getting out there to investigate the ship... and getting around without being heard or seen. Which would make three problems. Add in an annoying stalking snake-elemental and a smitten fish.... great. 17 x.20

"What's the matter, woodling, can't swim?" Loki teased him. But the look on his face... in his eyes... oh. Uh... desert... gimpy... lizard... not-lizard... oh yeah that added up totally into not swimming. "Heres a hint kid. You're not a gimp and have the power of magic at your hands. Magic's fun. And what's under water?" "...sand? Rocks? dirt?" it clicked. Earth was underwater. Huh... "What are you getting at." "Little trade secret trick that really wows people. Water walkin'. And yes, it can be done if you're not a fish-person. You can draw up the minerals in the water and form disks to hold your weight." "I'm not that light." Flare pointed out. "Draw up pillars of rock and walk from point to point?" "I know you say I'm a novice magic user. I barely figured out how to harden the sand around my feet to brace myself. Or draw flowers up." 18 x.20

"Then play to your strengths, woodling. You are learning of sand, then work with sand. Of dirt, then play with dirt. You understand I'm sure. In your core, you do." Loki pointed out. The elemental sighed. This kid had some major confidence problems. "Make a point of yourself. Try making a sand pillar. The stone sand stuff." He coaxed the drake-child into pulling a few small sand pillars up off the edge of the shore, out of sight of the middle of the ship. To step onto them and see if it held his weight. There were multiple failures, the stone just falling apart on getting weight on it. One the fish brushed against and it broke. The last pillar Flare climbed upon, he gripped tightly on the pillar with his bare feet. The wooden foot seemed to grip a bit better. "Good. good. But you need to work on summoning quietly. It's too loud." 19 x.20

Loud. Loud? How was it loud? Flare found himself getting tired when trying to summon another. Loki could see the fading of energy, and in an impulse of choice, caught the kid before he found the ground with his face. "I keep forgetting that earthbound elementals have a mana limit. Just relax. Let the magic flow around like your blood." There was a bit of trembling in his limbs. The kid had never stretched his mana limits and that would be a problem. The ship was out far enough that the sand pillars would exhaust him before he hit shipboard... oh dear. Hm... but all elementals could tap the hollower element, right? Once Flare's energy had come back to him so he wasn't about to pass out from mana overuse, the elemental walked him through the way of trying to teleport. It was a one time deal because he boosted the distance with some chaos magic. Flare found himself on the boat. There was a scuffle between him and the few that were manning the ship. The fish served as a distraction while a heavy tail smashed into their backs. Not nearly as effective as being a ssashirk, but tails still pack a punch. 20 x.20
