Sevyrn had never touched a fishing pole in her life, so what in the world had she been thinking when she walked straight in to the bait shop like she knew what she was doing and walked out with a fishing pole, net and some worms as bait? She had to wonder as she walked down the rocky shoreline of the river, seeking a comfortable place to stop and take her first shot at fishing with a familiar face at her side - that of her beloved steel ghaenelt, Bez. After leaving the store she had been hit with a moment of buyer's remorse, but it was too late to turn around - there was no like the present to learn a new skill anyways. She had been busy for the couple days right after buying the equipment but she had nothing to do today, which meant that she had no excuse not to take the plunge.

With her hands in her pockets, she continued to make her way down the shoreline, casually kicking a rock out of her way once in a while as Bez dashed around - never travelling far from the girl that he was most bonded to. The pair were tight as thieves - Sevyrn remembered the day that she took his egg home from the labs, to the fun that they had together when he had been but a baby, to that time she'd tried to take him in to a tournament (and prompty lost... in her defense it had been a first for both her and Bez). Sevyrn had been there with Bez more than she even had her equillion, and it was hard to beat how close she was to those guys. In a way he felt like the perfect companion for a new adventure and hey - maybe he liked water. There was no way to know until she tried.

Seyvrn eventually settled down at a spot about ten minutes from the beaten road, leaving her backpack on the ground where grass faded in to rocky shores. First thing first she needed to make sure that Bez would be taken care of - a water bowl and water bottle would solve that problem. She hadn't worried about bringing food along because being outside meant that Bez would have access to all of the bugs and critters that he could ever dream of. As an insectaphobe.... well, having a ghaenelt wasn't the easiest thing. She did what she needed to make sure that he had food, though, and it was more the big creepy-crawlies that got to her. (Sevyrn would never be seen owning a weaver or formica, for example.)
After that... Well, step one was to grab the fishing rod out of her backpack, right? She barely even knew how to hold it, but hopefully that would eventually come to her.

That thing... felt so awkward in her hands that it didn't even make sense. How was she supposed to hold it properly? How was she supposed to work the reel? As Bez ran around the immediate area, never running off, Sevyrn spent several minutes figuring out how exactly to work the equipment in her hands. Eventually she felt like she could at least work with it, though rather awkwardly if anything at all. Bracing herself against the rocks beneath her, she flipped the lock on the reel so that she would be able to cast, held the rod in what seemed to be an appropriate casting position, then swing forward and let it go. To say the least it did not go very well at all - the hook fell just a couple feet out. Sevyrn couldn't let that bug her, though - all she could do now was pull the line back in and try again... and again, and again, and again until she was finally able to get a semi-decent cast in.

It took a good few attempts at casting before the line finally fell more than a few feet away from her - and Sevyrn wanted to pump her fist in excitement at that little piece of progress. From here on it was just a waiting game - it would make for a quiet, peaceful afternoon and hopefully a good one. Bez was happy to be getting out, Sevyrn was happy (although nervous) to be learning a new skill. It was just... good. She had no idea how she was supposed to reel in, though - fast or slow, smoothly or jolting? Each method probably had its own way of attracting potential fishies. For a while she experimented - if she caught something then great. If not at least her hopes weren't up just yet. If she caught something at all today she would be impressed with herself - if she was going session after session without catching anything then she would be disappointed in herself.

Plip. Plip. Plip.
Was that rain? Oh great. It didn't seem that cloudy this morning, but the sky is full of dark clouds swollen with precipitation. Slowly the drops fall at first, but they quickly pick up speed. Before too long, it's a full on downpour, and there aren't many places to hide in the canyons.
If that wasn't bad enough, the ground around the river turns into a sludgy muck. It's hard to navigate, sucking at the feet of all those who try to step in it.

Sevyrn had been hard at work when the rain started - at first it was nothing worth batting an eye over, but that changed quickly. Before either her nor Bez had time to realize what was happening - and with that have time to back away from the shoreline - the river had flooded on to land and muddied as well, sticking to Sevyrn's shoes and with that sinking her feet in to the muck. Great... Sevyrn had been feeling so good about today right until now. If she was real lucky then the rain would let up soon and they at least wouldn't be getting any wetter, but that didn't change that the shore was soaked and she was kind of screwed if she wanted to be able to get close to the water when it was good to get fishing again. Maybe she should come back later on in the day, or perhaps tomorrow once it had time to dry up?

Either way... it was time to either seek shelter or head back home. Sevyrn didn't want to ditch the plans for the day so she elected for the former, grabbing her bag off of the ground and dipping beyond the treeline to hopefully find a small bit of reprieve in the shelter of the canopies. Unsurprisingly it didn't help too much, but it was something - until Sevyrn realized that she had left her backpack by the shore and her backpack had one of her sketchbooks in it and that was classified as an emergency to the woman. "Stay here," she said to Bez, though she knew that he wouldn't wander far, as she dashed back out in to the downpour to sweep her bag up off the ground. While the surface was wet, a quick check of the insides let her know that the book of her art was still dry. Thank the gods.

Waiting in the semi-safety of the treetops, Sevyrn figured there was nothing to do now but just play with Bez for a while. Her sketchbook was safe for now, and she wasn't going to change that taking it out and exposing it to the elements - not today. Staying as close to where she had ditched her fishing rod as possible, she found as dry of a spot as possible to keep her backpack safe, and then turned her attention towards the ghaenelt. Bez was oddly fond of the downpour, playing in puddles and even attempting to swat at the raindrops as they fell. It left her wondering how well he might take to swimming - it would be an interesting thing to teach him, that was for sure. Sevyrn herself couldn't even swim, though, so that was something that she would want to do first before hopping in to the water with one of her creatures and trying to teach them.

Given that the downpour didn't seem to want to stop, Sevyrn ended up electing to take Bez back in to the town - she didn't stop without first grabbing her fishing pole from the riverside, though. It meant getting her shoes and her pants all muddy, but it's not like she was going to just leave expensive brand new equipment behind! Okay, sure, it was a little dirty now... but a quick clean would have it good as new, and maybe the rain would have let up and the mud would have had time to dry before the time that she got back home and finished cleaning up. A girl could dream, at least. She really wanted to get the hang of this fishing thing, as much as the torrential downpour just shortly after she started trying had put a wrench in her plans and left her feeling like she had wasted her time.

She didn't mind the walk home in the rain - but she spent the entire time worried about her art supplies. When she got back to her place the first thing that she did was take everything out and make sure that nothing had been sullied. Luckily, all of her art was still intact. She used this as a chance to have a snack while Bez played out back with her hybrid, Al, in the garden. The two hadn't met before but perhaps it was time - Sevyrn was looking to move more pets from her kennel in to her home as she expanded and Bez would be one of her first picks. After finishing up her snack she cleaned her supplies off, and by the time that was done the sun had returned. Perhaps by the time she reached the river, things may have dried up a bit. It was worth the shot.

Luck had turned in her favour - as she walked over the wooden bridge that marked where she had turned on to the river before, the shoreline was already drying up. Once again it would make for a suitable place to settled in and get to work, and Sevyrn's mood surged from dejected to pleased once again. It was a whirlwind how fast her moods could change sometimes - not just to the people around her, but to herself as well. All it took was one little thing and she would end up feeling so defeated that she didn't even want to try any more, yet the moment something turned in her favour it was like she had never been unhappy in the first place, and there was no chance that anything would be able to keep her from what she wished to achieve. Today would be the day that she maybe not mastered, but at least learned how to fish.

Sevyrn ended up settling in to a spot rather close to where she had been before, just another minute or two down the shoreline. The spot that she had started at was still flooded beyond what she had thought was possible from what ended up being about half an hour of rain, but... oh well. It wasn't like there weren't more spots to settle down in, and the one she had found had a rocky outcrop on it that would keep her out of the mud if the rain were to come back down. She'd even thought about the possibility when she was back at home and grabbed an umbrella to hide her and Bez from the downpour in such an instance. As Sevyrn pulled her fishing pole out of the side-strap on her backpack, Bez was wandering within her site and checking out the new surroundings. Oh yeah, and the puddles. Always the puddles with that boy.

Alright, back to work. The clouds had cleared like they had never been there in the first place, the water was relatively calm, and Sevyrn was determined to figure this stuff out - it was going to happen. She was still awkward and fumbly with the rod, still figuring out how to handle it properly, but... she had the basics. Anyone who even looked at her would know that she was pretty much useless and assuredly a beginner, but everyone had to start from scratch. Hoping to work on her aim, she put more focus in to the first cast of her return trip, even pushing her glasses further up the bridge of her nose so that she would be able to see just that touch better. Once she felt more confident in her actions, she swung the rod forward and released the line, letting it fly in to the water and then land with a plunk.
