Its funny really. What can be called a suitable pet for the work. For the work of finding and capturing a book shipment thief. Who apparently is at the docks, if the flyer on the board was anything to go by. The docks were for aquatic things. Fishy things. Things like Trevor, who would be a very difficult case of getting out to the docks in the first place. creatures who naturally disquade people or things from being bothersome. If it was anywhere else, the draenix might have done perfectly. However... 'No.' Yes, that problem. The big dragon shaped problem who was blocking her path. "Yes. Its not going to be a tough problem." 'No.' the drake hadn't moved on either his position, or his opinion. "I am not a hatchling Caiman. Let me pass." Ridelys pointed out. She wore her water pendant, and had the idea to take her spear along. 1

'No.' Pointedly, he spread open those impressive wings and blocked her path further. "Do you even know what I'm going to do, Caiman?" Ridelys asked him, trying to duck under the leathery wings, only for him shift his bulk and block her again. Bad choice on making the equipment area so small. Bad choice on design. 'A bad idea.' Okay, yes. going unaccompanied into trying to get someone to cough up some books wasn't the smartest idea that Ridelys had to date, but better then holding onto a wild drake and holding on for dear life. Yes, and those scars still exist. 'I will go with you, or you do not go at all.' the drake growls with finality. Why is it that most of her stronger group of fliers believe she's some sort of hatchling who needs to be constantly babysat? 'because your bad ideas are what could get you killed.' 2

"I've stated it before Caiman, I am a grown up who knows what to do if I get in trouble." she argued. "My instincts aren't that dulled." She understood that he seemed to be quite a bit more concerned on her lack of instinct of protecting herself. A deep growl. The drake raised up one foot, and for a brief second, something they both sensed, she thought he'd hurt her. No, his claws curl inward to his 'hand' and gives her a 'gentle' bump, landing her on her butt. 'Dull' he pointed out, quite literally. Turning around and heading back to where he'd chosen to make his territory on the new area. A letter had come a while back and released Caiman from looking after an empty piece of land. The whole area he claimed as 'his', but 'they' (being the other sarane his partner took pity on and fed), got smaller parts. 3

He wasn't the only creature in her care that seemed to be stupid overprotective. DuneEye seemed to be following her around more then normal, especially when trying to feed or care for the broken basket case that was her youngest grown sarane, Scho. But Caiman put his face in all of their territories and outright made it known to the entire group that if anyone laid a claw on his partner, they would be dead. Not maimed, just plain killed off. Caiman had no patience for the less sane, and would pin the other drake to the floor and hiss the threat in his ear flap. Just because he had antlers and a bit more height didn't equate out to being strong, as the last tournament had proved for them. "Fine fine, then you have to pretend like you want to listen to me." The backwards head cock ... oh things just went his way, didn't it. 4

The general populace had an attraction to the cute, the strong or the dangerous. Some people still acted like it was too dangerous to take a grown sarane outside in the city, Because of how dangeorus they could be. Caiman's reputation of a veteran pit fighter preceded him, and one squinted glower sent most running the other direction. Because of his refusal of taking her on his back to fly places, Ridelys opted for walking, because she had no mounts to do the deed, and flying still kind of spooked her. The quest board stood just outside the kennels, no longer as busy this time because of all the little bits torn off lately for informaiton. Was there still a shipment of books to find? The flyer was still there, so problably. 'Why' he asked pointedly. 'We need more infomration then just word of mouth. I only glanced at the flyer earlier in the onth, and this isn't esactly an easy task.' 5

Patient didn't pertain to the sarane, as he swung his head different directions, staring at people. His partner had warned him repeatedly to behave himself. What, did she not trust him around people too, not just herself or her creatures? But Ridelys took down what she needed from the flyer and returned to him. Patting his shoulder and walking off towards where she believed the docks to be. He wanted to get moving. She'd closed her mind off briefly to her partner, going over her notes. Her partner was a fighter. Being a thinker wasn't his thing. Fight first, think later. So discussing a strategy would be useless, right? It was out on the docks, and she'd been there at least once. Books and ships and what not. "I don't see many folks walkin' around with a brown off leash, what're you out doing." she turned briefly. The juice stand, just closing up for the afternoon, had the stout little woman who ran it. Looking right at her. 6

"Hello, Ms Pomme." Ridelys greeted the dwarven woman with a smile. "How is the business?" "Summer always brings in more customers, dear. Its going to be harvest soon, and I expect a bumper crop of fruit and berries from my shippers here." she responded, a cleaning rag in her hand as she scrubbed down the area. "You look decked out for war. I didn't take you for being part of the local night patrol." They had a night patrol? Huh... "No, we're going to find someone donw on the docks. It might be dangerous, so I wanted to be prepared." Over her head, the drake stared the little dwear woman down. He wasn't impressed by the herbivore smells she had. "Caiman is my best trained fighter, and we've been through a lot." "I see now. He's quite the sight, for little old ladies like me." she smiled up at the drake, whose gaze narrowed. 7

"He's old enough and smart enough not to mess with regular people." patting his shoulder a bit. "Though I think because browns typically are treated like a disposable? pet for the pit. Yes, I have had my own share of browns who have been adopted for the pit tournaments, but-" "Oh dearie, I can see it in how your boy acts. He tries not to show it, but he's grateful. You have a kind heart and a good hand with creatures." Ms Pomme points out. "He's not acting the dominant or being a submissive follower, but willing to walk alongside you like an equal, in dominant terms." "You're really observant of critters... and people." Ridelys replies, a bit surprised. Through the link, Pommes words are an interest to Caiman, who exhales through his nostrils and tries to look haughty. Tries. "Be in the business of feeding the masses long enough, you learn how to read people and their pets." 8

"there's no need to make reason of how you work with your creatures. They know by seeing you, you are good and will care for them. No matter what species they are." It was an outsider's opinion, true, but she had a good point. "I'm closed up for the day, but come by another time. There's a good drink I've been working on that's got some northern coastal imports." Had she ever told the lady she was from up north? "There were some talks of goings on down on the docks, though." that got her attention. "At first the harbormaster thought it was just strays who were stealing things. Perhaps those stray orbaru or cats. However, larger objects are going missing, and there's an older ship moored at night in the docks. The dockers aren't keen on calling out on the ship because it seems to scare away anhyone who gets close." Oh so this was interesting. 9

"Not even birds land on the masts or the quarters of that ship. Everything seems to keep away. Nobody's willing to try getting close." she paused briefly. "Ask the dockers, they'll probably tell ya." "Thank you, I'll do so." Finally, Ridelys moved awya, and Caiman followed her. Complaining to her through their link of his feet going to sleep from such a conversation. 'Look at it this way, I've got a lead. A lead that might pan out.' she told him. 'Humans talk a lot among themselves, and information passes. So if we talk to someone who actually works there, we could figure out how to get near." 'From the sky', the drake pointed out. It was above water. 'Yes, but we'll be seen. You can't go invisible, last I checked.' Snort. He didn't need to be invisible. His own presence was terrifying, right? 'You aren't as intimidating as you think Caiman.' 10

Nonsense. Of course he was more intimidating then he looked. What other drake had what he had to show for his long line of fights over the years. His burn scars had long ‘healed’ bugt never went away. He’d just scare them away, yes.Or destory them. That could work too. 'You underestimate what humans are initially scared of.' Ridelys told him seriously. It wasn't a stupid idea to figure it out, but whatever she could do to keep from having the docks put together from scratch from a renegade hurricane.... would rather not have that. 'humans are afraid of me.' He wasn't a stupid drake. 'You are afraid.' "Let me make this clear; I am afraid of what can happen to you. Or what you can do. That I'm very grateful I didn't think all sarane needed to breathe fire." Picturing the drake before her, not master of the skies, but cooking his way through life. Literally. 11

'No' Fire and Caiman hadn't gotten along at all, but he got off better then the poor raptor drake she heard still roamed in the deep dark of the pit. He'd been cooked from the inside, and had his face melted partially off. Inner injuries seemed to heal a bit faster, especially of the mouth. Above knows how often one can accidentally chomp down on a cheek or the edge of the tongue while eating something in a hurry. 'I am a flier. and always will be a fighter who flies' 'Glad to know we're on the same page for something.' she said, and they were off to the docks again. Pomme's words bouncind themselves around in her head. Not even birds would land on the masts of that ship moored in the middle huh. That definitely screamed being unworldly. Nimbus wasn't a brave bird either, so she wouldn't be able to test t hat theory. 12

“Darn num it, the amount of tourists here today, we’re not a spectacle, ya hear?!” She’d barely taken a few steps onto the boardwalk when someone of distinctly bear nature lumbered in front of her and started shouting in her direction. “Tryin’ to work and get an honest livin, take your stupid lab rat and get off our dock!” The boardwalk shuddered when Caiman did a ‘small’ pounce forward. His muzzle right in the bear-natured face and showing his teeth with a dark shaded glare. She could hear every threatened hiss plain as Common... “y...you don’t scare me, big ugly mug monster.” The salt caked fur on its head ruffles with the sarane’s hot breath. “Caiman, no. Thats enough.” She said loud and clear, reaching up to take hold of his wing shoulder joint. Grrr... The drake’s good eye gazes back quickly at her before sneering at the bear. 13

“I’m sorry for my partner’s behavior. He’s a good dragon, just a bit of an ass.” ‘Bull****’ the drake hissed in her head. She pretended to not listen to him. ‘Play along.’ She told him shortly. “He’s a good boy. Sit Down Caiman, show the nice bearman you’re a good boy.” The amount of irritation buzzing through their link seemed to double. Slowly,, very slowly, the drake laid down on his haunches, his tail wrapping aorund his back half and giving her a death glare. “Dusn’t make a big difference lady, take your lab rat and get off our dock.” The bear growled, pointing stubby nailed fingers at him. “We’ve got too many passersby, and theres plenyo f space for your ‘pets’-“ he makes quote marks with his stubby fingers “down south. Git going.” “I wouldn’t come down here if I didn’t have a reason to, sir.” 14

Ridelys had no height advantage of note, heck, she hadn’t grown an inch since she had become of age. And probably remained one of the shorter females of her tribe. Groan. So this bearman towered over her. But she wasn’t going to be pushed around by this hulking furry. The heat seemed to be building across her shoulder blades, slowly adding to the heat of the day. The bear seemed to pause at hte sudden increase of heat. Caiman could feel the heat... and his eyes crinkled in a smirk idea. ‘He’s gonna get it...’ “The book keeper twins put out a request to the ENTIRE CITY for finding their lost book shipment. I’m not the only one who is trying to help those nice little ones, so please do us both a favor, and point me to your boss. I want to know about the spooky ship. 15
