Current Quest
‘ So with the information I’ve gained from those two brother, there is already one person to suspect.’ He muses to himself. He remembers that quest from long ago with that one person who wanted a deck of cards back, he’d had to work as a server the whole day and two ‘o clock past midnight in a tavern for the man that had the object just to get it back. He remembers vaguely that the person who requested it was called by the tavern owner as Mariko? Or was it that magician? He shrugs the thought away mentally, it didn’t really matter all that much what the strange person was called, he just remembers for the most part that the person was a rather unsavory person right from the beginning, and he has a job to do right now. He figures taking along his small companion would be ideal for this type of quest. The Balgor pup he took with him doesn’t seem to mind getting outside the kennel too much and looks inconspicuous enough that he might be over looked. Temero’s nose twitches madly as he takes in the scents of the area around them, he looks around curiously at the buildings, and in turn, giving him an extra sensory output to work with while walking carefully to make certain he isn’t making a fool of himself by turning into the wrong direction if he focuses a bit too much on what Temero is seeing. The leash in his left hand he uses to make sure that Temero isn’t going to leave his side pulled tightly whenever Temero wants to go to a place to investigate. (1)

He hasn’t had too much practice with this yet when it comes to gaining extra sensory outputs, but the fact that at least compared to Solis, he has an easier time finding the links of Nix and Temero in his mind, and shutting them down makes it a whole lot more pleasant to have him by his side for this quest. Should it become too much, he at least has that option for it, but in the meantime having two pair of eyes instead of one while walking around the warehouses of the docks might make it possible to find this Mariko person again. “It’s kind of ironic that the first time I met that person they had something stolen from them, and now they are doing it.” He says to his companion as they stare inside one of the alleyways that smells terrible like rotten fish and other junk, he’d rather not know what the smell might be from. Feeling like he might need to sneeze from the scent, double so because it’s even more overpowering in Temero’s case, he quickly pulls on the leash to indicate they should move on, hurrying past it to get away from the smell. It’s unlikely that the thief would hide something like books in that place, risking valuable goods to smell like rotten fish would be bad for business should they try to sell them. They need to get to the actually docks, the way those brothers talked about the thief made it sound like they would still be hanging somewhere around there, looking for more stuff to steal. “Mellow?” He hears Temero almost chirp towards him. The little guy ever since he met him seems to have skipped the typical sounds a Balgor makes, and just goes straight for mangling together some human words in a feminine tone he has no idea how that came about.

He raised an eyebrow while looking down at Temero, trying to figure out for just a moment if he wanted something, or was just saying something for the sake of it. Temero merely wagged his tail while looking up for a second, then down and looking in the direction of the alleyway they left. ‘Yeah, no.. Not happening.’ He thinks while shaking his head for a second when Temero looked up again, and tugged gently on the leash to make him walk beside him again, it took a few seconds, but when the pup finally understood that he has no intention of getting in that alleyway, he was able to walk in a slow pace with the pup. Taking in the warehouses that are used to store the goods, and watching the people handle the transportation from said goods to the warehouses or back to the boats that was still much farther away. ‘It should still be a good fifteen minutes’ walk before we get there I think.’ With that in mind, he tried looking for a person to talk to. There may be one or two at least that might have seen this Mariko person hanging out in the docks before, and with them working here, the chance is certainly higher that they may have noticed compared to a passerby going off to train their creature at the docks.

“Excuse me sir?” He pauses for a second, catching up with the human man as he walks away with a sack lifted on his shoulder. Temero runs quickly by his side as stopping would mean getting dragged by the leash. But he seems to enjoy repeating what he is saying, so perhaps Temero doesn’t mind it too much. “Sir?” He calls out for what is likely the ninth attempt in getting someone’s attention in order to ask some questions. He’d been doing this at least for six minutes now when he reached a good spot with quite a few people working in unloading the goods from the carts and having it be brought inside one of the warehouses he passes by. This was, from what he can tell, some type of grain in large sacks that they are working on. “Can’t you see I’m busy? Shoo! Go bother someone else lass!” The rough tone of the man he tried to catch his attention says back. He frowns at the lass comment, he hates being compared to a women, he isn’t one at all. “Sir, sir!” He hears Temero chirp happily in his own tone of voice to the man, swishing his tail and looking the man directly in the face. The man frowns as well when he looks down at Temero, first in confusion but then in understanding why he hears his pup repeat the words again. With a humph, the man who can’t be older than forty-five at his latest, he drops the sack of grain on the ground. “Fine, what it is it you wanted to know? Make it quick!” He snaps.

With a quick nod in agreement, he explains who he is looking for, and especially why he is looking for that person. The face of the man he is conversing with slowly starting to darken. “I might know this person your talking about.” He almost growls out. “Never did I thought they could actually be a thief, but they do have certain habits that make it troublesome to even associate with them if I don’t want to lose my job. The boss hates gambling on both his property, and outside it if his employees are involved in it.” The last bit certainly explains enough to him, Mariko had already been kicked out of certain taverns for it. “Right, but where can I find them?” He asks, while fishing out a treat from his pocket with his right hand for Temero, the little pup has finally settled somewhat while they talked, only looking curiously around at the people around them. Giving him the chance (without it even being Temero’s intention) to see if anyone is spying on their conversation, or if he is lucky, get the chance to see Mariko in the crowd without making it look like he is looking for them. “Mellow!” Temero says cheerfully, pawing at the treat in his hand till it falls on the ground and can gobble it up. “Well..” The man says while scratching at his brown beard, dark blue eyes staring thoughtfully away from him. “I think I might know something..” The man trails of, almost suspiciously as he grins at him. ‘What?’ Seeing the confusion on his face might have clued the man in that he really doesn’t know what he is hinting at. “If you give me some credits..” The man grins. “I might be willing to tell you what I know.” There seems to be greed shining in his eyes.

Right, this type of people exists as well. Musing on the amount that would be reasonable, he fishes out some coins from his pocket without showing just how much he carries. Twenty credits should be enough. Handing them over the man only looks at it for a second before saying. “Well, for this amount I could give you the general direction, but if you want something better..” That guy.. Didn’t he say that he doesn’t have time for this type of thing? Sighing he fishes out of his pocket another thirty. “Ten extra to keep your mouth shut about this after we are done.” He grumbles while handing it over. “Right, right. Wouldn’t dream of it.” This could very well be a month’s pay with how the man is looking at the coins in his hand. Coughing for a second, get’s the man’s attention back on track. “Right, well, I’ve heard the fellow has a boat in the harbor with the name Mystique in black. Some silver stars are painted near the name. The boat looks like most of the others in appearance. Rather inconspicuous really if not for the name. They usually park their boat at the end of the left side from the harbor, there is usually less patrol on that part since the boats are smaller, and usually doesn’t have any illegal goods that could be found there.” At least that is some pretty good information, and from what he can tell through looking from Temero’s eyes as the pup keeps looking around at anything of interest, no one really paid all that much attention to their conversation. Good.

After bidding the man a quick farewell, and giving Temero another treat for helping him out, they slowly make their way towards the docks, passing people and creatures alike. For the moment he had shut down the three links of Temero’s senses while they walked in a faster pace, had he left it on, it would make walking for him slightly disorientating because of the height different they have when they look at something. Temero only looked slightly puzzled by having the links go out, and not being able to see from his eye sight, but it only took a few minutes for him to be adjusted to one sight again, and cheerfully following him along. Only if his nose picked up something especially interesting did Temero try to stop and investigate, but with a couple of gentle tugs on the leash, and a meat treat, did Temero follow along quickly enough again.
At a certain point he had to stop Temero with walking further when he noticed a rather familiar individual walking towards them, and while they weren’t paying attention to them, he didn’t quite like to take his chances in being found out. Surely that person still remembers him from that one quest he needed to bring back a deck of cards that always brought them a winning streak? As unconcernedly as he could look, he made his way to the side of the docks, farthest away from the water, and hopefully more out of side as he nears a couple tall crates. “Look little?” He hears Temero say, not paying much too much attention to the tension his owner is feeling when he exclaimed those words in a feminine tone. “Hmm?” Looking at Temero he sees him sitting down, looking curiously up at him, tail wagging slightly.

Kneeling down, and hopefully looking even more inconspicuous, as he hadn’t done anything to cover up his white hair. He fetches from his pocket two treats, giving them one after another to Temero and stroking his head while the pup munches on the treats. Activating the link that is used for sight, he sees Temero tense for a second in surprise, but then act completely normal again in his behavior, as he is used to having the links on and off, he doesn’t know any better since he’s only a month or so old. “Good boy.” He murmurs while looking through the eyes of Temero, his focus at first on the ground because of the last treat that had one half dropped on the ground as he chewed, but after that one was gone, Temero started looking around again, and luckily for his sake Temero was able to glance in the direction he wanted for two seconds. Just long enough to see that the person they should avoid is moving further away from them, none the wiser on what they are doing here. “Great job Temero!” He says softly, petting him gentle on the head and gaining a cheerful, “Merrow!” back from Temero.

He really should figure out at some point what exactly that word is supposed to mean to Temero, as it didn’t sound like word that exists, nor quite like the mewling of a cat. “That’s nice Temero.” He murmers, slowly standing up and turning around. Closing the link once more, its not needed right now luckily. Not when he can see with his own eyes that Mariko is heading somewhere that is away from the direction their ship is located. “C’mon Temero, no time to waste.” He says, gently tugging on the leash so that Temero at least understands with his actions what he wants to do, since the little one has hardly been trained to follow orders. “Good, good boy!” Temero says excitedly, wagging his tail as he starts walking behind him, looking at his hands now and then to see if he would be fishing out more treats for him to eat, but not looking too disappointed whenever he seemed to come to the conclusion that it wouldn’t happen right away. It took longer then he hoped it would to find the right boat with the name Mystique painted on one side, but when he did, he made certain to check behind him to see if the owner of the boat is going to come back anytime soon. If they are, then he could make it look like he is lost, and try again some other time, but if they weren’t, then he’d have a chance to look around.

Nothing. Good. He didn’t see the slightly familiar cloak, and considering how much they tried to cover themselves in the winter season to be unrecognizable, he finds it doubtful that they would suddenly appear without a cloak that isn’t in their own personal quarters. “Let’s do this Temero.” He says softly, walking closer to the boat. At least the neighboring boats looked like they weren’t in use right now, no person working above deck and possible seeing him. Sure, there are people on the walkway that are moving about, but they seem to mind their own business mostly, or looked like they were heading to a certain spot on the docks where they could train their creature. Taking the gangway plank to the ship, and actually seeing what it looked like in better detail on what is inside.. he wasn’t all that impressed. Sure, when he and Temero looked for any hidden cache’s on the outside, it looked nice and clean. But opening the cockpit to see what might be there (and honestly feeling surprised that they hadn’t locked it), it is in one word. A mess. Closing the door behind them and letting go of Temero’s leash, he lets the little pup go wild with his curiosity, only opening the link of sight so that he could keep track of what Temero might be seeing.

Five minutes later, he is sure of one thing. While this place is a mess, it’s a mess made on purpose to make finding things for those who do not know where everything is a lot harder. But, since he did got to find a large chest that is bolted on the floor with a very thick lock to prevent it from being opened, and the chest itself can’t be moved, no matter how hard he tries to push. He is reasonable sure that there at least might be some elicit wares in it. “Temero!” He calls out while taking out a treat from his pocket, showing it to Temero as the pup has his leash drag on the ground while coming closer. His eyes are completely on the treat while he whines for the treat in a cute manner. Good. Hopefully he would be willing to work for it. “Watch this Temero.” He says softly, using one hand to hold the lock and prevent too much movement while pushing with the other the treat in the keyhole of the lock, smearing the remaining crumbs on it. He knows Temero is capable or pushing out some acid residue from his teeth, its one of the reasons he is actually wearing the right type of gloves to prevent himself from getting injured with it. “Go get it Temero, you can do it.” He says while holding the lock in one hand. “Merrow?” The little pup squeaks out in confusion, not sure why the treat is being stuffed inside something else. “C’mon little Temero. You can do it.” Hopefully this encourages him as he still looks hesitant about it.

Eventually through more coaxing, Temero slowly starts to chew on the lock to get the treat. Acid eats away at the metal lock, too slow to feel comfortable with the time they may have left while Mariko is gone from this ship, but he knows letting Temero hurry with it wouldn’t help out all that much either. Finally! Finally, after more then a several minutes watching the acid Temero uses to chew on the lock start to break the lock, he is able to open the chest. Fishing out a treat for Temero’s effort (as it is rather unlikely that the pup will be able to eat the other treat in case there is still some acid left on it, or it melted away) from his pocket, it is quickly chewed on with a satisfied expression filling Temero’s face. Lips pulling upwards in the corners of his mouth, he opens the chest. The first look he gets from what is inside it, he can tell that it is a lot of valuables. Gems of all sorts that are known to be expensive. Jewelry that looks like they contain silver and gold. Some unknown trinkets he can’t quite figure out what they are meant to do. And taking each one out of the chest, he places them carefully on the ground, shooing Temero away from them when the little pup came a little too close them for comfort. He only came for one thing right now. And only that. No need to destroy or take more than needed. It is only when the chest is almost cleared from all other valuables, he finds what he came for. The set of books that where stolen from the pair of brothers. ‘Good. Now I just need to clean up as quickly as possible after taking it out of the chest, and get out of here with Temero as soon as possible. It wouldn’t do to be found out by Mariko.’ He really didn’t want to know what they would do in retaliation, if there comes a retaliation. For now, he’s just glad to have found what he came here for.

There wasn’t anything he could do with the lock to make it look like he hadn’t broken in the boat, but there was a way for him to at least hide somewhat the evidence of what was used to break it. Still, before that… Taking a couple steps away from the vault, he gently drops his backpack on the ground, rotating his shoulders for a few secs now that it was off, then kneels down to open the zipper and place all the books in his bag. Closing it quickly with the zippers again, and using the straps to have it lie on his back once more. “Temero?” He calls out softly as the little pup as he had gone back to explore this room, luckily not rubbing himself against any objects or displacing something too badly, but it might still give him some more work in cleaning up if he isn’t careful. “Tem!” The pup says in a bark like voice, for once not imitating him as exactly as he is able to do. Wagging his tail, he comes closer, definitely looking like he is eagerly looking forward for some treats.

Which he doesn’t mind giving to Temero all that much, the little pup did come when he spoke his name. Taking out a treat from his pocket, he hands it over to Temero who is quick to gobble it up, and not leave one stray crumb behind if part of it even had fallen out of his mouth. Grabbing the leash now that it is in range while Temero looks up in a hopeful way, he ties it around a loop in his jeans, tugging on it to make certain it won’t suddenly become loose. He’ll have his hands full already with what he needs to do as he walks closer to the vault again and kneels carefully down. Since he actually has his acid resistant gloves on, he picks the small parts up carefully with one hand to lay it for the moment in the other, and tries to wipe away some of the acid drops that had fallen on the wooden floor. Grimacing when he noticed he was too late with that, and the floor did show signs of holes in them.

Right, in that case. Standing back up, he pushes Temero away from the mess with his feet. He isn’t certain how resistant the pup actually is when it comes to his own acid. To him, with offspring you can at a certain point make an estimation on the best traits that a parent could pass on to their children as far as genetics go. And so far with his sister Nix, she doesn’t seem to posses the terrible acidity that Temero has. Quickly walking towards the door, he peeks out of the windows in as subtly a manner as possible. He didn’t see anyone from the boat directly across them being above deck or looking out of the window. And just hopefully, the same will be for the people at the walkway still minding their own business. “Now or never.” He mutters to himself as he carefully opens the door of the cockpit to get outside with his arm as he still carries the acid and remains of the lock.
