It felt more tense and uncomfortable, but she had to push through it. If she couldn't trust Jack with her secret, who could she trust? This was the first time Nina had ever had the urge to tell her story, and she was going to do it. She had to trust her friend.
"Okay, allow me to explain." Was this it? She felt tense, but she focused on the story and how to tell it. "I was created. By... well, you know." He eyes flicked briefly in the direction of the labs. They were far from the actual building, but they both knew where it was.
"I was made to be different. From the other droids. I was made to be more, more like a person. Except, the experiment, it wasn't... quite right." Nina kept pausing while speaking, as if she was trying to phrase things carefully. It was a difficult story to tell, even if she felt ready to tell it.

Listening as closely as she could while having a hand on Alexei's head, she scratched an itchy spot on his head while Nina talked. She saw her eyes briefly move toward the main Labs area and she nodded with a frown. The Labs were great, at least at first, now she wasn't so sure. They were old and decrepit now it seemed, falling apart. Nina must have felt ashamed of her origins.
Reaching out, she patted one of Nina's hands and then squeezed reassuringly, though didn't know if Nina would feel it. "I'm sorry you were an experiment, Nina. You deserve more than that you know..."
While she wasn't sure if Nina was finished with her story or not, she figured she wasn't and silenced herself, promising to interject only every now and then if she felt her friend needed the encouragement. Maybe she was horrible at this, but she hoped she could at least be there for her.

Nina wanted to say something about how people don't always get what they deserve, but she wanted to stay on topic. Instead, she said, "I think I am more than that. You see, the experiment, it was not what... they expected."
"I do not know what... they," another glance in the direction of the run down old labs. "What they wanted. Whatever it was, I am not that. Someone... saved me, from them. They gave me life. A person. I do not know what happened, exactly, but I think I have a piece of them, and a piece that is... me."
"At least, I want to hope that there is some me in there. I can't know for certain..."
Nina often struggled with the idea of who she was, and this conversation was a difficult one to have. If Jack wasn't so supportive, she might not have been able to open up like this. It was a lot to share, and it was a secret she had kept to herself for many years.

Jack found herself scratching her chin as Alexei glanced over at her, unsure as to what the two of them were talking about. Two of the three who had bested him... it was a daunting thing, but one he was interested in seeing, no matter what the occasion was.
She thought about it for a moment or two, smiling a little as she thought about it, her friend was... her, right? "You're you! Just because someone helped you start... You know. People who have children, they're part of their kids, but their kids are their own people. That's the same as you, you know? Just because someone gave you a piece of themselves... doesn't mean you're less you," the woman said gently, putting her hand on her friend's shoulder.
Nina was a TROD. She was also a person. Jack didn't think any less of her for being something different, she saw beyond it, saw...
"Nina. You have a soul, don't you?"

Nina felt pacified by Jack's words. She had never thought of it that way before. Was it as if she was Silver's child? That was strange to think about, but in a way it could be true.
"Thank you," she said quietly. It was clear from the way she was quiet for a moment that she was considering what Jack had said carefully. While she did think that the two of them would have to have this conversation eventually, it still felt very strange to say all of these things.
Does she have a soul? Was that a question anyone else has ever had to answer? Did humans also wonder what a soul was, and what it was like to be 'them'? Nina was overwhelmed with the possibilities, so she just blurted out the first thoughts that came to mind.
"I cannot know for sure, but I think so. I do not know what it is like to be... not me, but I also think that... there is something... a soul inside of me."

"Well, you've lived with a soul for so long I bet it's hard to imagine life without it!" Jack told her friend with a smile as she reached out to pat her on the shoulder, "If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you're different or weird. You're you! That's what I like about you, you're you and you're wonderful." The woman smiled happily and reached out to pat her leg this time, pleased with the way things had worked out today. The little hatchling had a new home, Alexei was calm about the whole thing, and she was pleased with how things had happened.
Jack scratched the back of her head a little bit as she wondered what to do with things. Well, she was happy enough to be with her friend, she knew with a smile, and she thought about it for awhile, "You know, we should do more together, it never feels like I get enough time with you." She turned her head and beamed at her friend, trying to cheer her up a little after such intense questions.

"I... ah, thank you," she said. This was why she liked Jack so much. She always made her feel a little more... normal. It seemed like no matter what insane thing was happening in her life, Jack was able to just roll with it. It made her wonder what Jack's life must be like when they are apart. She had to be doing something. She always seemed to have a lot of creatures around, but Nina didn't know how many that could possibly be.
"Ah, well, actually, I was just saying..." With that comment, Nina remembered why she started this conversation in the first place. She wanted to tell Jack all about the changes in her life recently that might make it so they could spend more time together. "I've recently moved, ah, to be out on my own. I used to live with someone, but, ah, we've gone our separate ways now, and..."
Nina paused, because she really didn't like talking about it. She also felt guilty about 'abandoning' her old friend. "Well, I think I'll start raising Sarane now, anyway."

Nina had paused as she was talking, which wasn't necessarily unusual in and of itself, but Jack had a feeling that was because a nerve had been hit, she figured with a frown. Hmm, well she would do her best to be sensitive about it. "Well... if you ever need someone to live with, let me know," she told her with a wink, "I just live in the Kennel anyway."
As she listened to Nina's plans, she tapped her chin and smiled, reaching out to scratch Alexei behind his horns for a moment. "Yeah? That's great! If you need any help let me know, or if you need anyone to breed with I guess?" the woman chuckled as she shook her head a little. She was impossible sometimes, she loved the species and she loved getting offspring, but... it wasn't like she really needed more at this point right? "Anyway, let me know how this little one grows," Jack said, reaching out to pat the whelp on her head, "She'll either be feisty or a sweetheart I think."

Nina made a squeaking sound that wasn't really a word, and her antennae shot straight up. That offer Jack made about staying with her was very forward, and Nina didn't know how to take it. Instead, she was just relieved when Jack changed the subject. She really didn't know what to think some times.
"Yes I will," Nina said with a nod. She definitely thought that Jack would be a great ally on her journey to raise Sarane, considering how many Jack already had herself. Though wouldn't that mean they were competition? That would be stressful. She tried not to worry about it right then.
Nina looked down at the little Sarane again. That's right, that's why they were there in the first place. Why they were talking about everything that happened. Nina's antennae relaxed and she considered what the hatchling might grow up like. Jack knew a lot more about Sarane than her, so she took her word for it.
"I hope she is feisty," she said idly. "Just like her dad," Nina looked back at Alexei.

Giving a small smile, the woman nodded and then stood up again, scratching her arm a little and stretching out. She was sure Nina would be fine with the hatchling, this was great, and the little one had a wonderful chance at life with her. "Well, honestly we better get going, I have a lot to do at the Kennel," Jack told Nina with a wink as Alexei stood up and stretched out as well, giving a groan as he did so. This was great she knew, and Alexei nosed the little whelp one last time before trotting out again.
Jack moved in for a small side hug with Nina and then waved with a bigger smile on her face, "Let me know how she turns out for you! If you need anything, let me know, and remember about the house thing as well okay?" Stretching out her back once more, she turned and started off down the sidewalk.

"Yes of course," Nina nodded. She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but it made sense that Jack would need to go and take care of her creatures. She did have a lot of them, apparently. One day Nina would find out just how many.
"Come little one, we should get going too. Do you want to see your new home?" she asked in her 'puppy voice'. Nina really did love creatures and she was a natural with them. It was totally different from how she interacted with people.
"See ya big guy," Nina said. She briefly touched Alexei's side as he walked away, which was the most courage she could muster in the moment.
"You'll have to come over for tea some time!" Nina called out as Jack began to walk away. For some reason she just didn't want to watch her leave without saying... something. Now she would have to go buy a tea set, just in case Jack ever called her up on that offer.
