The main reason he hadn't wanted to take up the guarding position was just so he could spend some time with Boomy, and he didn't think the little fossil guy with the long neck would be able to guard anyone from anything at all. It had been a while since Ashe had gotten a new pet that made him want to do nothing but spend some time with him - he was pretty sure Fafnir was the last one he'd felt so attached to. And here he was, willing to take notes instead of go on daring adventures hunting for anyone trying to disturb them…. He looked at Boomy and smiled as the long neck lazily looked around, eyeing everything as if it was a tasty leaf. But to his credit, he didnt try to eat the telescope.
It wasnt too much longer and Ashe heard the collective gasp erupt around them. He looked up instantly and saw it - the comet had arrived at last!

Boomy didnt have the same interest in the sky that the others did and he continued to nose around with interest. Ashe reached out a hand and gently made contact with him, to make sure he wasn't going to try to run off while Ashe was distracted. He nudged the hand and nibbled on some fingers, but nothing was going to be able to drag Ashe's attention away from the spectacle going on right above him. Okay, so his naked eye version wasn't the best, but even he could see the comet burning brightly as it sailed across the sky. Slowly, but steadily.
"Quick!" Lexi said, snapping Ashe out of it. She was busy scribbling on a note pad of her own. "Look in the scope and see it for yourself! Before I have to start taking notes." This was quite a nice offer coming from her, someone whose job it was to look through the lens. But she let him anyway.

Ashe wasted no time in hurrying over to push his eyeball to the eyepiece. Boomy made a sound of protest as Ashe left him, but he stayed put, thankfully. And Ashe looked through the lens and saw the comet in great detail, following its path. It was beautiful, yet a little freaky in its beauty. If that thing was closer to the planet, what would happen? If it came toward them, instead of shooting by them… was it big enough to kill him?
The thing that snapped him out of his awe was Lexi suddenly thrusting a notepad and pen into his hands. He stepped back, taking the items and allowing her to take over. She was the scientist, after all. She started calling out readings and technical stuff, and he wrote down everything as she said it. He didnt understand most of what she said, but that didn't really matter in the long run as long as he got it down. He did his best.

It felt like a long time of writing and scribbling, but was probablg only minutes passing. Ashe was a flurry of activity, to the point where even Boomy paused in his exploration to try and take a peep at whatever Ashe was doing. The movement had obviously caught his attention, the speedy way the pen moved back and forth, the occasional flash as the metal tip reflected some sort of light. There was an odd hush over the crowd of scientists, as everyone scribbled readings and measurements and observations, with quiet murmurs as they dictated for their assistants what they couldn't do themselves. Lexi asked a few other small tasks of Ashe here and there, which he eagerly obliged her and handled without missing a beat.
For sure an hour had passed now when the flurry settled into steady reporting of readings and other data Ashe didnt understand. The soft scribble of words and numbers, the quiet murmurs of excited voices.

And then, just like that, they were done. Ashe felt almost empty when he had to give up the notepad, handing it back to Lexi to put with the other notes, for her to peruse and officially script at her leisure. The comet was almost clear across the sky now, and Ashe was told this was a decently long time to be able to see such a marvel. He got to look through the scope one last time and see the difference from before to now; it seemed further away, leaving, off to explore a frontier he couldn't fathom ever crossing.
When it was time to leave, Ashe gathered up Boomy and gave his sweet head a gentle pat. He had behaved himself and gotten to see something a lot of people never saw in their lifetimes. And Boomy probably didn't even appreciate it, being the fossil creature he was. Ashe gave a sigh, helped pack up the last few things, and turned to leave.
