Nadia felt a strange kind of anxiety when turning up to the breeding centre with Mabel in tow. Her match was perfectly lovely, she was mature and ready for this kind of thing... but the woman couldn’t help but fret over her houluh. They were awfully precious to her. Plus, she knew her partner to be a bit... laid back. Obsidion was a sweet guy, but one who made her nervous by default. She wasn’t afraid of him by any stretch of the imagination, but had a degree of fear of the unknown in regard to him. Though, she couldn’t fault him otherwise. Reuniting her with Mabel was enough to get into her good books permanently. While waiting for him to arrive, she started on the paperwork. It was getting awfully familiar by that point - she was sure she could do it in her sleep if need be. [1]

Obsidion sighed a little, Robin had pulled ahead of him, but hey, the Houluh had four legs so he couldn't really be too mad right? Shaking his head, he grinned as they raced to the Breeding Center, he knew better than to be late, but he'd had to uh, acquire... something before this happened, and now it was dangling on Robin's collar, looking pretty dashing honestly. He reached the Center after Robin and gulped down breaths as the Patronne gloated and pranced around him. "Next time... I win," he gasped, out of breath. Shaking his head again, he opened the door and grunted at the Houluh to go in first, he'd won the race after all...
"Hey Nadia! Hey Mabel! We're here!" he announced to the Breeding Center with a wide smile on his face. Only he would be pleased about being late, but at least he was consistent, all things considered. Robin barked and wagged his tail happily as he trotted over to Nadia in greeting.

Nadia was delighted to see the pair when they did turn up, but couldn’t help but give Obsidion a disapproving look. She thought he’d gotten better at timekeeping since they’d been living together! She gave Robin a pat on the head, and then turned to his guardian. “Hello, Obsidion,” She greeted, trying to disguise a smile as she spoke. It wouldn’t do to give the game up by looking playful. “I thought we had worked on your tardiness. Keeping a lady waiting is awfully impolite of you.” Mabel had seen this patronne before! They lived in the same place sometimes, so that was pretty unavoidable. It helped to skip any awkwardness between them - she trotted right over for a greeting sniff and a tail wag. She wasn’t quite as playful as some of the other houluh in Nadia’s collection, but she was soft as butter and sweet. [3]

Robin barked, pleased with himself for having beat the man to the Breeding Center, even though he had no clue as to why he was there in the first place, and wagged his tail a little with a beaming look at the head pat. He then turned and went down on his front paws at Mabel when she came close and sniffed at him, ready to play already. Sure, she wasn't quite as playful as they came, but hey, they still played sometimes, right?
"Ah, yes, well, you see, I had to um... acquire something for the breeding, and I figured you'd appreciate it! Tada!" he took the offering off of the Houluh's collar and presented it to her with a bow. Never mind how he'd come across something like this when he had never entered any Houluh into a Salonne, let alone win, but... sometimes it was better not to ask, he figured with a wink at Nadia when he looked back up.

Nadia looked at the offering, and then back to Obsidion’s face. The woman was no fool - she had used an offering in a breeding before, and had only been able to acquire one as a generous gift from a fellow competitor at a salonne. They were not given out willy nilly. So why - or more importantly, how - has this man gotten one? ”Did you steal this, sir?” She wasn’t screwing around, that was for sure. Her exasperation was written all over her face. “I know how rare these are, Obsidion. What have you done this time?” Maybe it was a little unfair to say such a thing, but it was something she had come to expect from him. His gestures were kind, but the methods he went about with were... questionable. Mabel yipped happily and bounced from side to side, more than ready to play. What was everyone waiting for?! [5]

Obsidion straightened his back and sniffed at the air a little, handing the Offering over to Nadia if she wanted to take it. "In fact, someone gave it to me this time, you can even ask her! I think you know her, curly haired, slightly intimidating?" he tilted his head as he described her, he could never really remember her name, never really wanted to, there wasn't a point in it right? The fact that she had come to help him out from time to time didn't matter, and he smiled a little, "I swear on Robin."
Speaking of, he bounced around and held his tail up high for a moment before barking and racing off down the hallway, looking at Mabel to follow him, but he wasn't the smoothest of operators and ran smack dab into the wall. The thunk his head made seemed to have everyone turn their heads, including Obsidion who winced a little, "Always thought he was more graceful..."

Nadia’s eyes narrowed. Was he talking about Jack...? She did know Jack as a kind and generous soul, especially since she hadn’t blown up over Obsidion handing over one of her hatchlings to Nadia. Why would he lie when she could just go and ask her friend if it was true? ”I... alright. I will accept this for now, but goodness help you if it turns out you were misbehaving,” She said with a light tease. The longer they’d stayed together, the more comfortable she had gotten with speaking informally to him. It felt nice. “We need to fill in some paperwork for this breeding.” Mabel was concerned about Robin instantly! With a mournful whine, she paced over and licked at his forehead. Was he okay? Did he need to lay down? She would sit with him if that was what he needed! Oh, dear, how sad. [7]

A smirk crossed his face, was she... teasing him a little? Now that was a bit new, and he figured he liked it. But uh oh, paperwork. Should he let it loose that he wasn't the... best... at writing? Or should he just try and muddle his way through? Chewing his lip, he nodded and looked over the paperwork and then picked up a pen. Obsidion stared at it and then looked over the paperwork, this was hard, he hated admitting he couldn't read all that well, it seemed like something that should be easy enough for him, but it wasn't. Finally sighing, he looked over at Nadia with soulful eyes, "Can you help me out?"
Robin did lay down and winced a little, licking at Mabel when she got close enough. That had hurt, but luckily he had a hard head! At least that's what the man had said a few times, whatever that meant. He panted happily at the attention, however, and nuzzled close to Mabel, if she allowed it.

Nadia hadn’t expected that answer from him. She paused, quiet, and wondered what it was he needed assistance with. It was simple, wasn’t it? She’d done it a few times, admittedly, but— Oh. Perhaps... he wasn’t able to understand it at all. If you couldn’t read, there would be no hope in filling it out. She did her best to lock up her impulsive sympathy, and nodded with a smile, taking the pen from him. “Of course. You just tell me your details, and we can fill it out together,” She replied. “Not a problem.” Mabel was glad to notice that Robin smelled okay, and didn’t have any obvious injuries. Phew! She nuzzled into him in response, showing that the attention was welcome. It was nice, to be physical with another houluh! Different from what it was like to tussle with Hael and Gelert. [9]

Lowering his head a bit, he felt a little ashamed, asking her to help him out, but what else could he do? It was a miracle he'd done the Houluh adoption paperwork on his own, really, and he'd halfway muddled through that. They'd had to track him down for better answers both times, which made his shoulders slump a little. However, he nodded and started to talk, "Well, I guess... wait, what details do we need?" The man peered at the paperwork and thought he at least read the word 'name', but wasn't entirely certain about that as of yet. He supposed it would be good to wait for Nadia to explain it though.
Moving into a bit of a lounge in the middle of the hallway, the Houluh yawned and then settled his head on his paws with a woof. He was happy to be with her again, this time one on one. It was nice!

Nadia didn’t want him to feel like she was pitying him. It would make him uncomfortable, she thought - it was best to act as normal as she could and work on it quickly. Her pen was moving before he’d finished talking to fill in the bits that she knew. “So, they ask for your kennel name and address... I put mine down for you, as a placeholder at least,” She explained, and then gestured further down on the sheet. “Here they ask for your houluh’s name and information regarding their genetic makeup. Do you know those things?” Mabel looked back at Nadia, only to see her still in conversation with Obsidion. Boring! Why weren’t they moving? She plopped down next to Robin with a little sigh, leaning her head close to his. This was a strange place and she wasn’t sure why they were there. [11]

Listening carefully, he gave her the information he could, "Mine's Black Stone Kennel, if you need it. Robin's show name, do they need that? It's Black Stone's Steal from the Rich." He gave her a guilty little look when he said that, "He was named from a folk story I somewhat remember, it's the only thing that I've kept, it seems. Oh! Genetics, that's that slip of paper they give you when they grow, right? I have it here..." As he dug around in his pocket, he smiled a little and finally got it out, handing it over to her and pointing at some of the letters, "I know the letters, but when they make more than one or two letter words they kind of... jumble together." The admission hurt, but it was worth knowing.
Robin finally sat up again and trotted off toward where Obsidion was, eyeing the human for a moment before standing up on his hind legs and tugging at his arm lightly with his teeth. Come on, they were waiting for... whatever!

Nadia felt a twang of sadness. It was a shame, that Obsidion couldn’t understand. She’d never asked about it before, out of ignorance - she’d made the assumption that everyone could read, when that was certainly not the case. The redeeming factor was that it was never too late to learn! ”Wonderful, thank you,” She said as she took the slip of paper from him, copying the letters down on the form. That seemed like everything! As she handed the completed papers back to the receptionist, she offered him an encouraging smile. “That is quite alright. I can help you learn a few things, if you would like.” Mabel watched as Robin went, but did not follow herself. These humans were so boring! There was no point chasing them if they were set in their conversation. She’d wait in the hall until some action was going on. [13]

A smile bloomed across his face at that and he eagerly nodded, "Yeah! You've already taught me how to cook, might as well struggle through reading too, right?" Smile turned to a grin as he went to nudge her on the shoulder, "Besides, you're a great teacher, I'm sure you can figure out how to get through to me." He wouldn't admit that he had the slightest hint of memory of reading before, but couldn't remember what had been read and how to do the reading itself. Oh well, if she was willing, then so be it. "So that's it? We just need to grab a room now? Robin! Stop it!" he growled at the Houluh and stepped back so the Patronne would drop back down on all fours, "We're coming..."
Pleased with himself, Robin turned and barked at Mabel for a moment and then trotted back over to her with a goofy look on his face. As long as he was happy, apparently.
