Sigma seemed like an intelligent enough creature and a capable explorer. She didn’t need to teach him too much. He mostly mimicked her movements when he wasn’t quite sure where to go next.
“At least we don’t have to worry about things getting too dark.”
Bioluminescence was a major boon within the underground. Flashlights were unreliable and Leafy had many break on her before. With Sigma, they wouldn’t be plunged into complete darkness if it was to break this time.
“You’re lucky you have a natural light source. Carrying around a flashlight can be incredibly annoying.”
It felt nice to get back into the swing of things. She hadn’t mined in a bit and she was falling back into the comforts of old routine. Having a new partner along served to shake things up a bit, but Leafy felt completely at home within the old mineshaft. She allowed herself to pick up the pace a little.

A very fancy looking gemstone seems to be embedded in the wall. Time to go to work!

It had been a while since Leafy had ventured into the mines and she feared that she had gotten rusty. She had chosen Thane and Adder to join her today. The crossbreed was supposed to be quite adept in the mines and Leafy was always happy to spend some time with one of her Felusine hoard. The trio approached the entrance of the mineshaft they had decided to choose to head down today. Leafy carried all her tools in a wagon and her backpack. She also carried Sage in her arms. Thane followed behind them, keeping an eye out for anything that might ambush them from behind. The mines were silent, completely void of any other people. Leafy felt herself relaxing, feeling calm at the prospect of being alone. Thane had his ears pricked forward, ever on alert. Sage was calm as well, curious about their surroundings as Leafy carried her forward. The entrance that they headed down had long been cleared out and she doubted there would be much to find here. First thing to do was to pick a quieter, less travelled path. Thane was quick to alert her to the one that he wanted to head down. (Thane 0 1/5, 5 1/5 | Sage 0 1/5, 5 1/5) 1

Leafy made sure Sage was secure as she led their belongings down the wide tunnel. Thane had made sure to pick one large enough for everything to fit through. It was easy enough for the two of them to follow Thane as he led the way. There also wasn't much in the way of debris, which made it simple to guide the cart through.
It was about half an hour before Thane signaled to Leafy that he wanted to take a break. She felt that they had covered a lot of ground and the crossbreed seemed to think they were close to the end of the first part of the mine. Soon, they would be deep enough to find some areas that hadn't been excavated yet. Soon, they would be deep enough to find some areas that hadn't been excavated yet. Once Thane was adequately rested, the trio continued onwards. The ground underfoot grew damp and soon a trickle of water was visible as it flowed downwards.
Leafy couldn't hear it running as it flowed down the hill so that wasn't yet indication they would come across an underground river. The farther down they went, the more the sound of running water grew.

Sage positioned herself so that she could see better. She was quite curious at the sound of water, not having much experience with the outside world. This was her first time venturing outside and she was quite pleased with the journey so far. Thane was also rather curious about the outside world. He was tuned to the mines, his bones singing with rhythm as he traversed the path ahead of them. He was created for this purpose, and he was happy to be serving the mythical nature that was the mines.
Leafy was enjoying their journey too. She felt so at peace here. It was the only place she truly felt herself. The mine was like a second home to her and she felt glad for the company that Thane and Adder provided her with. The trio descended further into the mine, Leafy taking the rear as the cart proved a bit more difficult to maneuver now that they were descending an incline. After what felt like hours of walking, the trio finally came across their first cavern. The ground had been carpeted by a layer of damp moss, softening the sound of their footsteps. Thane paused for a moment as he scanned the area.

It seemed as if it had once been flooded by a massive amount of water but was now drained. Thane went on ahead to scope out the cavern. He quickly came back and motioned them forward. They approached the cavern slowly. It was difficult to see anything at all, with only a few areas of the cavern lit. The ground here evened out and Leafy picked out a spot where she could leave the cart for a while. Sage squirmed frantically in her arms and the girl plopped the Felusine down onto the ground so that she could explore.
The small Felusine leapt to her feet and padded around the cavern, her eyes glowing with curiosity as she took in everything around her. Thane stayed back, preferring to watch over the little Felusine. Leafy smiled as she watched Sage explore the cavern, feeling relaxed in this place. There were a few objects lying about on the ground and she couldn't tell what they were. They looked like large, round rocks but she knew that they were not. When she approached close enough, they moved! Leafy backed off slowly, confused by what was in front of her. The objects were moving, shifting on their own.

They seemed to be rolling over one another, bumping into each other as they moved about. Leafy felt uneasy. She didn't know what those things were, and they looked dangerous. She didn't want to risk getting hurt or having the creatures hurt her, so she backed off slowly, picking Sage up so that she would be safe. Thane growled low, warning the creatures not to get too close to them. Leafy still couldn't quite make out what they were, but she was fine without knowing as long as they left the trio alone.
Sage squirmed in Leafy's arms, asking to be let down again. She couldn't understand why the girl was holding her, so she started to call out in frustration. Leafy held her tightly, feeling worried about the situation. She walked her away from the creatures and then set her down where Thane could safely watch over her. Thane wasn't sure what to make of these things either. They seemed harmless enough, so he decided that it was probably fine to leave them alone. Before long, the hoard of rock creatures cleared out of the area, leaving them all alone once again. Leafy let out a loud sigh of relief.

It seemed like they were safe for now.
The trio approached the center of the cavern where a large pile of rubble was situated, blocking the area behind it. There was a small opening that they would be able to enter through. Leafy gathered the cart with all their belongings and led it forward. She felt nervous about this area but knew that she would be able to handle whatever came their way. She wasn't going to let anything harm her or her two companions. To her surprise, sitting right in reach within the rubble pile were two gems. She hastily scooped them up and added them to her belongings. The cart would be too difficult to bring through with them so Leafy was going to have to leave it behind while she scouted out what was ahead.
She picked up Sage again and carried her within her arms and Thane followed close behind. The opening was wide enough that all three of them should be able to fit through quite comfortably. The opening led to a dead end. There wasn't much within the area, but it was dark, which made it hard for the trio to see what was ahead.

Leafy scanned the area for any signs of additional gemstones, but it didn't seem worth it to linger here for very long. She let Thane and Sage explore for a while, but they grew bored quickly and wanted to leave. She grabbed Sage and brought her back out of the opening with Thane following. The halfbreed shook himself once they were back out in the open and Sage demanded to be put down once again.
Leafy obliged and then they began making their way back the way they came.
As the trio was walking back, Leafy thought about the new gems she had found. She hadn't gotten a very good look at them, but she was fairly certain one was a mind crystal, which could prove very useful. She made a mental note to herself to research it further when she got back to the surface. She knew that they could be used to crafted small creatures, except she had never attempted it for herself. With the one way blocked and uninteresting, Leafy turned her attention to the other direction. This area seemed to be more interesting, as it had a much larger collection of rocks and boulders without blocking their way.

As the trio walked ahead, Leafy noticed that the rock formations around her were becoming even more dense. She heard a loud cracking noise and suddenly, a massive boulder came hurtling their way, leaving the three to scramble out of the way to safety. The boulder smashed into the ground right in front of where the cart had been parked. Sage noticeably jumped and Thane let out a low warning growl. All three of them were quite relieved that none of them had gotten hurt. Leafy let out a low groan. The pathway for the cart was now blocked and it looked like it was going to be a hassle to move it around the boulder.
Thane went on ahead to scout the area while Leafy examined the boulder. She wanted to see how she could move it so that she could bring the cart back here. The boulder was massive, but it didn't with some finesse it looked like it would be possible to move. She would need to find some sort of lever that could lift it and allow it to be rolled. If she couldn't find anything, then she would need to figure out some other way to transport the cart.

After a bit of searching, Leafy found a discarded plank of wood that looked rather promising. She picked it up and carried it back over to the boulder. Sage immediately darted forward to investigate the plank of wood. She sniffed it carefully, using her front paws to feel the surface. She drew back once she was confident that it would work to lift the boulder. Thane returned as well, though he didn't give any indication what he had seen in the area beyond the boulder. With a bit of finagling, Leafy finally managed to wedge the plank of wood underneath the boulder. She took a step back and examined the whole thing to ensure that it was in the correct position. Once she was satisfied, she moved to the end of the plank and stepped on it with her body weight.
The boulder lifted up a slight bit, which was enough to get it moving. Leafy rocked forward, moving the boulder just enough so that it slid out of the way of the cart. It would be a tight fit for the cart, but Leafy felt that there was enough room for it to be doable. She stepped off the plank and checked to see that the boulder was stabilized again.

She decided to give it a go. She picked up the cart, feeling a little uneasy as it began to wobble around on the uneven ground. She didn't feel confident enough to move it all at once, so she had to take it slow. Sage climbed up onto the cart, deciding that she would help Leafy guide it from above. Thane jumped to the path in front, ready to protect them from any danger that might appear. With a bit of maneuvering, Leafy guided the cart forward and it began to inch its way forward. The ground here was very damp, and it was difficult to move the cart around the muddy ground.
After a few minutes, Leafy finally managed to get the cart back onto free ground. The boulder was behind them, and the cart didn't even have a scratch on it. Sage leaped back into Leafy's arms in celebration and even Thane swished his tail enthusiastically. Now with enough room to explore, Leafy took in their new surroundings. This area was much bigger than the previous one and seemed to stretch on forever. The only light came from a lone torch that was burning in the center of the cavern. Leafy and her two companions moved forward slowly.

Leafy was quite surprised to see a few gems scattered about the area. Thane took the lead to investigate them, quickly gathering them up and carefully carrying them back over to her in his mouth. Leafy beamed at him and allowed Sage to sniff at the gems before she put them away in her bag. She put her bag on the cart so she didn't have to lug it around on her shoulders. As it filled with gems, it would become too heavy to carry soon enough.
Sage was quick to spot an area she wished to explore and Leafy complied by placing her down on the ground. She could keep an eye on the Felusine if she needed to after all. Sage was quick to dart away and Leafy moved to follow. With her cart and Thane accompanying her, Leafy headed off in the direction Sage had run to. The halfbreed's ears twitched with every sound and his tail swished back and forth as he walked.
Sage suddenly stopped running. She stood still in front of the cart, staring at a cluster of insects that swarmed in front of her. Leafy and Thane were quick to catch up, puzzled as to what she was so enthralled with.
