Plenty of places were familiar here. Plenty of places also weren't. Kadin was relieved when this one turned out to be more familiar than not. He'd adopted a puppy from an adoption agency and taken it home. He figured that, since the adoption agency did check-ups to make sure the pups were properly cared for, he might as well get started sooner rather than later. And, well, puppies need friends, right? So that was how he ended up here, in a field surrounded by trees, with two puppies nipping at both his and each other's ankles.
The whole point of being out here was to train them, but he wasn't entirely sure where to begin. What he was going to call them would probably be a pretty good place to start. Kadin had brought treats, too, for this very purpose.
"Hey, Dodge." He called out, watching the puppies play with each other. "Dodge? Hey!" Well, that one wasn't responding. "...Miles? Miles!"
The pups weren't paying him any attention, of course. They were two wrapped up in playing with each other! They ran around, frolicking in the grass and wind, happy to be outside and together and playing! Not in a kennel!

This was a great place to be, with lots of time to be outside and run around and get tired and then sleep and then wake up and do it all over again! It would be such a shame to waste a beautiful day doing something as boring as standing around doing nothing! So that was exactly what they were not going to do.
Kadin sighed. And opened up a bag of treats. There were ways to get to stubborn puppies if they didn't understand right away. "Hey! Puppies! Find it!" And threw a handful of treats on the ground, scattering them everywhere.
The effect was instant. The puppies, seeing the treats, raced over and started putting their noses to the ground, looking everywhere for nibbles hidden in the grass. What was funny was that they were both watching each other at the same time, as if waiting to see if the other found something so they could rush in and steal it. Kadin shook his head at their antics and started his plan. He crouched down and held out a treat in front of Miles' face. Once he had the puppy's attention, he hid the treat in his fist and said, "Miles! Hey! Miles!"

The puppy quickly looked at him at the sound of noise, confused where the treat had gone and whining a bit about it. "Good!" Kadin said the moment he had its attention, giving it the treat as a reward. "Good job, Miles."
Next he tried the same thing with the other puppy. He held a treat in front of Dodge and said its name until he got the puppy's attention. The moment its eyes were on him, he praised it well and gave it a treat, too.
Kadin repeated this a few more times with each puppy. There were still plenty of treats scattered around to keep them close to him and sort of competing with each other. The other treats also meant that they were just stuck on him, begging for attention the whole time. It was easy enough for Kadin to go to one puppy to another. "Miles! Good!" And give them a reward. "Dodge! Good!" Once their attention was on him and, more importantly (to them) the treats. He repeated this several more times, at least until they'd found the many treats he'd scattered around his person.
"Good pups." He said happily. Once they found no more treats, of course their attention wandered back to each other and they started to play again.

Now Kadin could see if they actually learned anything or if they'd just been after the treats the whole time.
"Dodge!" He called. The pup's ears twitched, but it was focused on trying to get Miles' ear between its sharp puppy teeth. "Miles, here!" Kadin tried again. This time the puppy glanced over his way, curious, and he immediately marked it with a "good!" and gave it a treat. Miles and Dodge both stuck by him for a bit after that, nosing for more treats. "Dodge!" Once he'd gotten eye contact, "Good!" it was time to dish out the treats and the praise. "Miles!" Wait for eye contact, "Good!" Treats and praise. He kept doing that for a while, before eventually withholding treats and waiting for them to get distracted again, as puppies tend to do.
The was a bird in some trees not far from here and leaves rustling in the wind. Grasshoppers left from blades of grass to better cover, the puppies hot on their heels. Save for the occasional glance at the person who kept calling those words they got treats for looking for!
"Miles!" The puppy stopped digging in the dirt and looked over at Kadin, tail wagging, knowing what to expect next.

"Good!" Kadin praised, giving it a treat. The puppy stuck by him after that, eyes never leaving the treat bag. "Hey, Dodge!" Kadin called while Dodge was prancing around with a stick in its mouth. The puppy took its prancing over to the human and other pup, eyes on the human and the treat it knew it earned! "Good." Kadin said, giving the puppy its treat.
Now they were both a bit glued to him. Kadin grabbed one end of the stick Dodge had and pulled at it playfully. "Dodge!" The puppy looked up from its growing, earning praise and a treat and dropping the stick in the process. Miles went after the stick and Kadin maneuvered it above his head, calling out the puppy's name while its eyes were elsewhere. "Miles!" A look at Kadin instead of the stick had him earning that praise and treat. This was really a great deal for them, after all. All they had to do was look at him to get a treat!
Kadin kept at it for a while longer, distracting the puppies and then calling their names. Doing something over and over again was the only way to get it to stick in their tiny brains, after all, and he wanted to make sure they got it before he moved on.

Now that he felt reasonably sure that he'd be able to get them to look at him on command, Kadin figured it was time to teach them something else. He played with the pups for a bit longer, just letting them enjoy themselves, before he decided to try anything more advanced. Luckily, the next couple of tricks could be taught together.
"Hey, Dodge!" Kadin called out, waiting to get the pup's attention. It was only playing a few feet away from him, so he hoped this would work. He held up a stick, wagging it around so the puppy could see it. Tail wagging furiously, Dodge charged in Kadin's direction. Once the puppy made it to him, he covered the darn thing with praise and giving it a treat, telling it, "Good come, Dodge! Good come!" And so on and so forth. He needed to get the puppy used to the word before he could do much else with it. All of the commotion had alerted Miles, too, and the other puppy came over as well. Kadin praised him, too, since it had come over to him, "good come, Miles! Good come." So that it could also get used to the word.

Now that the pups were right near by, Kadin couldn't exactly tell them to come again. So he got up and moved away, turning around to look at them when he'd only taken a couple steps away. "Come, Miles! Come, Dodge!" He called out, trying to get their attention. Since they could see the treats and noted their names (and were sort of following him anyway since he had the treats), the puppies came charging over to tackle his legs. "Good come!" Kadin tried that a couple more times, just walking a couple steps away and praising the puppies when they came over to him. It wasn't entirely what he'd need them to be able to do, but they were still getting used to the command word and all that.
"Come, Miles!" Once the puppy was closer, it got its praise and treat. "Come Dodge!" rinse and repeat. Kadin kept repeating the same thing, moving across the field and praising the puppies for following him, basically. He wasn't asking them to travel any great distance. He was only asking them to follow him, basically, but hopefully they'd get the concept the more that they became familiar with the word and started to realize what he was actually asking of them.
