There were probably better things he could be doing with his time rather than wandering the grounds of what amounted to a haunted house with two puppies, but, well. Kadin had sort of made it a point to take time to do useless things every now and then. He'd been walking around the labs and noticed the mansion, figuring that it wouldn't hurt to explore the place at some point. With him were two puppies he'd been trying to train now and then, Dodge and Miles. He'd had the foresight to leash them both since they weren't exactly going to be safely within the public park grounds. But that sure didn't mean they knew how to walk on leashes.
Kadin walked through the gates and onto the grounds, the puppies looking around and sniffing the air. They saw small things scurrying here and there and with some excitable yips they were lunging at the leashes, trying to go after them. That. Was not good leash behavior. So Kadin stopped walking, stopped moving, and waited. The puppies pulled and pulled, but they weren't moving anyway! Their legs were straining, but they couldn't get any purchase! Kadin was obviously stronger. And he just kept waiting.

Eventually, Miles tired out first. With a whine, he stopped pulling and turned around to jump at Kadin's pants leg. He wanted to go chase things but he couldn't if Kadin was holding the leash like this! Little did the puppy know, this was exactly what Kadin was waiting for. Once it came over to him and stopped tugging, he grinned and told Miles he was being good and gave him a treat. Treats! For coming to say hi! This was the best day ever! Miles didn't care so much that he couldn't chase things now.
Dodge pulled a bit longer, but he noticed something going on behind himself and since he couldn't run like he wanted to, he turned to go investigate instead. His treat senses were tingling! Once Dodge was over, too, and no longer tugging, Kadin gave him a treat, too.Good puppies got treats for not tugging on the least. And Kadin wasn't going to spend the whole fucking walk in here with these little guys trying to tug him all over the damned place. Once they were no longer tugging and mostly sticking near him, Kadin started to walk further into the mansion. And, of course, the puppies noticed things to chase again.

So he had to stop again. And wait. Kadin just sort of stood there, watching them, and waiting for them to tire themselves out. It really shouldn't take too long. They were young and couldn't pull that hard on the leashes, anyway. This time it was Dodge who gave up first, rushing over to Kadin with its tail wagging and pawing at his legs to try to get him to GO! Kadin praised him for no longer pulling and gave him a treat, which seemed to be an acceptable substitute for starting to walk again.
Miles, treat sense activated, rushed over to get his, too. He knew this game! He remembered! He need to go over and get a treat! And Kadin gave him a treat for no longer tugging. That was how this worked.
It'd just take a damn long time for it to sink in.
Kadin started walking again. The puppies got excited and started to try to chase after some of the small critters eating apples by the trees. Kadin stopped walking again and waited. Eventually, the puppies came over to him. Treat, and so on. Kadin sighed. This was going to be a very long outing. He was just glad he'd thought to leash them.

Kadin repeated the same thing a couple more times (take a few steps, stop once he felt a tug on the leash) before the puppies really got it. It was starting to sink in to them that tugging meant that they wouldn't be able to walk anymore. And, since they liked walking! They wanted to see all the things! It was time to stop tugging on the leash. PLUS Kadin had TREATS and that was much more interesting than running off and NOT getting treats. So after about half an hour or so the pups were walking on the leashes just find and Kadin wasn't going to dislocate his shoulders today. This was when he decided he should probably step it up a bit.
He watched the pups as they walked along. They were a bit ahead of him and that was ok, but they could learn to be better. Kadin shortened the leash a bit on Dodge, having him walk closer to his side. The puppy resisted at first. He didn't want to walk behind Miles! But the moment Kadin didn't feel tension on the leash he immediately praised Dodge and gave him a treat. "Good heel!" He encouraged, hoping that this would start to sink in.

They kept walking around the yard. Really, it smelled damned good out here and there were plenty of places to walk. Kadin didn't really want to go inside and have to deal with whatever would be in there just yet so he was content to just stay outside for now. He kept the leash a bit short on Dodge and praised him every time he seemed more relaxed walking next to him. "Good heel!" He kept saying, trying to get the word to sink in to his fluffy little head.
Miles was curious what was up, so Kadin figured he'd do the same treatment with him. He shortened the leash a little bit, bribing the pup back with treats and giving him praise when he relaxed into it. "Good heel!" Praise and treats, all that. Kadin kept walking the pups around the yard, leash short, and praising them for walking without pulling. Those same words kept repeating. He was getting a bit tired of saying them, but hey. The dogs needed to hear them to learn them. "Good heel Dodge! Good heel Miles!" He circled the yard about five more times, occasionally stopping to praise the puppies for walking nicely on the leashes.

They really were clever things when he gave them a chance to be. Eventually, he let loose some more slack on the leashes so that they'd be able to walk in front if they wanted to. Dodge did lunge forward a bit at the sight of something small disappearing behind a tree, but Kadin stopped in his tracks and Dodge immediately remembered himself. He moved right back to Kadin's side and got some praise and treats for it! "Good heel!" Yay! And then they could start walking again! Kadin walked them over to the trees. Miles went out in front to sniff at the trees, but he didn't find anything interesting so he came back to Kadin's side and got a treat for that, too. He didn't mind if they didn't follow entirely at his side the whole time, just that they mostly walked there while they were wandering around and always came back. "Good heel!"
They circled the yard a couple more times, weaving between the trees. Kadin let the pups sniff at the tree some more, nibble at some fallen apples, and admire the clear, crisp smell of the yard. He praised them and gave them a treat every time they fell back into heel, pleased at their progress.

Now that they'd wandered around outside for a while, Kadin figured it'd be a good idea to head inside. There were some other things he'd like to eventually work on with the pups, but there were too many distractions outside and he didn't want to let them off leash when they could easily wander off. So, he told them to heel and started walking towards the house. Since the command was still pretty new, he kept up with what he was doing before and praising them when they walked correctly by his side, all the way up until they got to the door and went inside.
Once inside, Kadin wasn't so sure that he should close the door. It was warm and homey and he could smell some delicious smells coming from... somewhere. But something about the inside of this place just made him want to make sure that he had an escape route available. Shaking the feeling from himself, he told the pups to heel and walked a bit further into the house, pausing to praise them every now and then for a job well done. They hadn't gotten far at all when they got to a large room with a feast laid out.

Kadin mistrusted it immediately. It was one thing to see a bunch of apples out in the yard, but an entire feast? Laid out on the table like this? He wasn't sure if he should lead his charges immediately from the room or walk in and investigate it. What if it was some sort of trap?
Or maybe he was just being a bit paranoid.
A shadow danced at the edge of his vision, he could feel a breeze brushing across the back of his arm, shoving playfully, teasing. Neither of the puppies reacted to it, but Kadin still shuddered, knowing that it he was just seeing things. And if he ignored it? Then he wouldn't be going crazy. Because nothing was there.
Taking in a deep breath, Kadin walked further into the room, looking over the food, tables, and chairs. There was no way he was going to eat any of it. Luckily, all the the food seemed to be off the floor, too, so while the smells would be tempted, he'd probably still be able to keep the pups' attention despite it. He had some of his best treats, after all, having expected there to be distractions in the place like this.

Still wary and with more than a few misgivings about their current location, Kadin unhooked the leashes on the pups to let them explore the room. At least while they were in the house there was less chance of them wandering off the property and into the city. Kadin watched them run off, sniffing for smells and looking for any snacks or cool things on the grounds. Luckily, they weren't the first ones to discover a... oh shit. Was that a pocket pet with a flail?
Kadin watched the little guy hopping up and down on one of the tables, waving its flail here and there, probably trying to threaten the puppies or something. He reached out a hand to it, offering it one of the dog treats on the off chance it would want one.
"Hey there little guy, we aren't going to hurt anything. You're safe." The pocket pet looked at him like he was crazy. Upon second thought, Kadin realized he'd just offered it a dog treat when it was standing in the middle of a feast. He felt a little bit stupid about that and withdrew his treat, sheepish. "Guess you don't want that. I don't blame you."

"Still, if you want, you can come along with us. The puppies won't be able to get to you if I carry you and I'll take care of your... er. Flail? Is it made of leaves?" Kadin reached out again, poking at the flail when the pocket pet dropped it and hopped back, away from it. Yeah, it seemed like it was just made of leaves, vines, and a stick. Not all that threatening when he looked at it closer. He picketed the "weapon" and looked at the pocket pet next. "What do you say? Friends?"
This time he held out his hand, palm facing up, as an offering. It took the pocket pet a while of deliberating before it seemed to come to a decision. It carefully climbed onto his hand and, the moment it was steady, ran up his arm and onto his shoulder, clinging to his hair. Kadin winced a bit at the tugging, but he wasn't about to complain. Especially because around then something shiny caught his eye. "Huh," he said, grabbing a glowing orb off the table. "I wonder if this'll come in handy."
Now it was time to look around for those puppies and see what kind of trouble they were getting themselves into.

Kadin spotted the puppies at the other end of the table and sighed. He was about to go after them and maybe try to get them to focus on learning a new trick or something when yet something else strange caught his eye. First, it was the fire. Somehow had put a small lit torch on the table. Near it was... another stick? With something that looked like a green pine cone on it? What wAS that? There was another of those gems, too, gleaming in the light, still looking like an eye. Creepy. He was also seriously worried about how close a straw little toy was next to the fire. Seriously, it was leaving shit like this out that made houses burn down. Who the hell DID it?
He was so distracted with everything else he saw, he spotted the crystal last. He felt a tug under his breast at the sight of it. It glowed, faintly, and as he picked it up he could just tell somehow that it was magic. Taking a deep breath, Kadin put out the torch and collected the rest of the items, too. He wouldn't know when this stuff might come in handy, might as well grab it.

Having gathered up the items, Kadin quickly made his way over to where the puppies were up to no good (he just knew it). He spotted them trying to jump up onto some chairs and, hah, not having the best time of it. Once they saw he was nearby, however, they abandoned what they were doing and bounded over to him, tails wagging. He decided to take advantage of their sudden attention.
"Hey, good puppies! Good Come! Good come, good job." He praised them a bunch, offering them treats, too, which delighted them (even though they could smell MUCH more tasty things nearby. Really, Kadin, who was he trying to kid?) Anyway. That done, Kadin walked a few feet away to see if he'd be able to get them to do it on command. "Miles, come! Dodge, come!" He called out where they'd started wrestling with each other. The pups looked over at the sound of their names and noticed (of course) that he still had treats! Since they were really rather simple to convince that way, they bound over to accept the treats for a job well done. "Good job guys! Good come." Kadin said, pleased that bribery continued to be the currency of the realm.
